my sister in law is 7 weeks pregnant and would like to know what the sex of her unborn child is? she already has 3 children.she is 30. (link)
A baby's sex can often be determined by an ultrasound at 18-20 weeks. This depends on the baby, to a large extent; if the baby cooperates by moving into a position that shows his or her crotch during the ultrasound, the technician can usually make a pretty good guess. It's still possible for the technician to guess *wrong*, of coure.

Here's a link with some information.

http://www.babycenter.com/expert/pregnancy/prenatalhealth/2200.html

It was reported a few years ago that a urine test was being developed which could determine the sex of a fetus earlier. However, as far as I know that test is not yet available to the public.

There are a lot of "old wives tales" about home tests and other ways to determine gender - the "urine in Drano" test, for example - but those really don't work. I'm afraid your sister-in-law will just have to wait another 11-13 weeks.

By the way, our ultrasound technician correctly determined the sex of our baby at our 20-week ultrasound. We weren't sure if we wanted to know, so we asked her to write it down and seal it in an envelope for us. If we wanted to know, we'd open the envelope later.

We opened it on the way home; my wife just couldn't wait. :D

I can't tell you what it feels like to suddenly KNOW that you're having a little boy or girl. It changes everything. But either way, it's wonderful!

the yellow part of the egg, I know, is the fattest part of the egg. What about the white part? That's suppose to be the healthiest, right? (link)
The yellow part is the yolk. It's the part from which a chicken embryo would grow if the egg was fertilized, and it contains a lot of cholesterol - so yes, that's the relatively unhealthy part.

The white part is the "white". It nourishes the growing embryo, and it's the healthier part of the egg for a human being to eat.

Whenever I eat a large amount of dairy products of any kind, particularly milk, I get this awful painful feeling internally right below my back...and then I get diarrhea. Could I be lactose intolerant? (link)
It's certainly a strong possibility. But you should check with your doctor to be sure.

hi i was eating a jawbreaker today and since i licked it a lot i have cuts on my tongue, and they hurt a lot. does any1 know how to help it heal faster? cuz it feels like its nvr gunna heal.
ill rate 5's (link)
Just chiming in; most people here are right on the money. Rinsing with salt water will help, by killing bacteria in your mouth (which slow down the healing process). Hydrogen peroxide is extremely useful, too; it reacts to infection and bubbles it out. By the way, hydrogen peroxide is what your own white cells use to kill infection in your body. In tiny, tiny amounts, of course.

Hydrogen peroxide is EXTREMELY cheap; you can pick up a bottle of the generic stuff in any drugustore. Make sure that the bottle specifically says that it can be used orally, or as a mouthwash.

Now, peroxide does have a drawback: it doesn't have a strong flavor, but it has a really nasty aftertaste. So I recommend mixing it with an equal amount of mouthwash.

Apart from that, make sure to stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water. Rinse your mouth with the peroxide/mouthwash combo just before going to bed. You'll probably be *amazed* by how much better your mouth feels the next morning.

Good luck!

I was thinking about joining Drama Club this year and I was wondering if any of you liked it?? I'm kind of shy and I’m hoping this will help me to become more outgoing. In Drama Club you don't have to act at all right?? You can just do "behind the scene" stuff right?? Well tell me what you think about Drama Club. Thanks alot. I rate 5's!

I've done all sorts of stuff related to acting (not professionally, though), and I have to say, it's definitely fun and should help you deal with the shyness a bit.

You can certainly do behind the scenes stuff like makeup, scenery, props, lighting, costume, sound, or prompting; most theatrical groups and clubs desperately need people to do that sort of thing (usually many of those jobs are handled by the same person). You might even want to try doing a little acting; it's fun, and kind of addictive.

Acting, of course, would help you more with the shyness than anything else. But even behind the scenes stuff is fun and will give you some social interaction.

Good luck!

13/M

I'm a really late developer, so I'm still the shortest one in my grade; my voice is very soprano; and it just doesn't seem like I've been going through puberty yet. But I have, because I love this one girl. School starts in under a week, how can I make it look like I've been going through changes, like I'm taller, stronger, and have a deeper voice? Thanks! (link)
There are limits to what you can do, but you can make the most of what you've got.

To look taller, practice good posture. That doesn't mean trying to stretch yourself. But stand straight, keep your shoulders back, and don't ever slouch or hang your head; be aware of the position of your spine and shoulders. Military men generally have that sort of posture, and even if you're short, it makes you look bigger and better.

There's no easy way to look stronger, other than to BE stronger. If you're that concerned about it, you should probably do some working out. I realize that you have less than a week, and you're not going to get much if anything in that little time, but a month or two down the road you should start to see a change in your appearance.

As for voice...did you know that before he became famous, Jack Nickolson's speaking voice was about an octave higher? An acting coach told him to lower it, and after that, of course, he became a huge star.

I'm not a voice coach, but as far as I know you should be able to get SOME positive results by making a conscious effort to relax your throat and chest muscles. Try to speak a little more softly, and slowly. Never push the "deep voice" thing - it'll sound fake. Voice pitch is affected by stress and tightness in your throat, so try to breathe and talk from deeper down in your chest.

And in general, try not to worry. You'll probably get bigger soon, but if not, there are lots of women who like shorter men. Personality is MUCH more important to most women than height or other physicial qualities. So relax, and be yourself.

Self-confidence is the key. Good luck!

Hello I am an 18 year old female with a rather embarrassing question. My vagina has this weird..... almost like a hanging flap of skin on one side. And only one side. It is pretty long, over two inches when pulled up. I am afriad to date or anything because I dont want him to think I am freaking looking down there. I havn't seen barly any vaginas in my life- is this normal?? PLease help! (link)
Totally normal. Every vagina is different, like every snowflake and every flower, and that's fine. Yours sounds well within normal variability.

And just so you know, there isn't a man in the world who'd turn down a girl that he was otherwise interested in because of the look of her vagina. It would never cross ANY man's mind to even THINK that a vagina was unattractive. That's just not possible. We don't think that way.

In other words, don't worry! You're fine.

Hey im the one who asked you about the whole greek-latin thing..well, can I have your e-mail? (i dont have aim..and i really cant ask it just like that, im afraid someone will know it's me..)So yeah, thx btw. (link)
Just FYI, my email address is in my profile; it's pmaranci@gmail.com.

I don't have AIM either, by the way. :D

i am very religious but i want to masturbate and idk what to do because i know its a sin so i was wondering if its a mortal sin or a venial sin (link)
I presume that you're Catholic.

I'm not, but I did a little research.

http://www.catholicqanda.org/FAQ_Library/Sexual_Morality/Masturbation.htm

http://www.catholicqanda.org/FAQ_Library/Sexual_Morality/Masturbation2.htm

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00CIZn

My understanding is that it's considered a "grave" sin, but not necessarily a mortal one. But you should talk to your priest about this issue, if you feel comfortable with that.

Having said that, I'll note that the Church's position on masturbation (and abortion, and contraception) has changed over time. They were not always considered sins, I believe.

Human beings are sexual creatures with desires like all other living things. I must admit that as an atheist, I have trouble understanding why something as completely natural as masturbation is considered so harmful. It's not as if any of the the sperm that you lose (presuming that you're male) would otherwise have become children; you're far too young for that.

Not to mention the whole issue of wet dreams. Those are entirely out of your control, and yet they result in the loss of sperm. Are they sins? How can something you have *absolutely no control over* be a sin?

Sorry, I don't mean to question your faith. These are just questions which have always puzzled me.

Good luck!

i really need someones help!!! ok so i am 17 and over the last 3 days i have been so hungry i have just wanted to eat and thats it. Today i ate a whole bowl of rice all to myself and i did not even feel full up i think i am Ill. I went to the doctors the other day cus my neck was swollen they looked at my tounge and ears and said it was fine. but seriously i can't stop eating... what shall i do. (link)
The problem is that we're not doctors, so there's not a lot we can do for you. This isn't really an "advice" question.

There are a lot of possible explanations for your unusual hunger. You might be going through a growth spurt, unlikely as it might seem. It might be a reflection of an emotional problem that you haven't mentioned. It could be caused by a physical problem of some sort, a disease or illness.

We just don't know. We CAN'T know.

But your doctor should. From your question, it's not clear whether you told him or her about your hunger. If not, you should. If you did, call them back and tell them that the problem is still there and you are worried about it.

Sorry, but all we can do here is tell you to use your willpower to try to stop...which will only help if you're just being greedy. It doesn't sound as if that's the case, though.

Good luck!

my [ex] boyfriend just got back from vacation. he broke up with me while he was there. and now that he's back -- he's confusing me. we did talk about what happened, and why he broke up with me and he says it was for the best. but then he acts like he doesn't even want to give me a chance to get over him. it's like, he doesn't want to be with me -- but then he doesn't want anyone else to be with me either. so what do i do ? i already waited for him to decide if he even still wanted to be with me for almost four weeks. i'm tired of waiting . what message am i getting here ? i'm really confused.
thanks.
(link)
The message is that human beings are jealous and petty. Even after they've broken up with someone, they don't want to see that person end up with anyone else.

That's not particularly admirable, but it's very human. All you can do is try to ignore him and move on. If he decides that he wants to be with you again, he can TELL you so - no games, no BS. But I'd suggest thinking twice about taking him back if he DOES want to make up, because after one breakup, the odds are really good that it will happen again and again whenever it's convenient for him.

It's time to lead your own life.

Good luck!

OK. my mom just recently told me to come into the bathroom and showed me that her " female front area" around the you no what was swollen. She hasent been able to poop and she says the swollenness is hurting real bad! Does anyone no whats wrong! (link)
She needs to see her doctor or OB/GYN as soon as possible.

what do u do to get rid of hiccups?? (link)
Different things work for different people, so you may need to experiment.

Hiccups happen when your diaphragm (a muscle at the bottom of your chest that helps you breath) gets temporarily out of whack and starts spasming.

So you need to find some way to reset it, basically. Most of the things that people have described here have a good chance of working for you; the goal is to stop or slow down your breathing, safely, in order to allow your diaphragm to get back in rhythm.

For myself, taking a few deep breaths, expelling all air from my lungs, and then drinking a large glass of water usually does the trick. I don't try to drink it non-stop, but try to be drinking at least little sips as often as I can; when you're swallowing, the diaphragm usually doesn't spasm.

Good luck!

Ok, I'm homesick of my home away from home ( cape cod Mass.) the problem is I live in las vegas :-(
Any ideas of how to get over this? (link)
I live pretty near the Cape, and I went there a lot as I was growing up (we used to stay in a cottage next to a lighthouse), so I can sympathize.

There's no easy cure for homesickness. I can tell you that my family moved away from Massachusetts when I was in second grade, and when I finally graduated from college I moved to Boston. Presumably you don't want to wait that long.

All I can suggest is to decorate your room Cape Cod-style. There are lots of Cape Cod souvenirs; maybe you have some. Or maybe you could make stuff, or buy it over the web. Even computer wallpaper of the Cape might help. You can get THAT easily enough by doing a Google image search for Cape Cod!

You could also easily make a Cape Cod screensaver using your own photos or ones from the web.

There are sound generator programs that make ocean surf noises, and I think relaxation CDs are sold with ocean sounds. That might help, too.

Or it might make the homesickness worse. You never know. In that case, you should just try to keep yourself active, and look forward to the times when you can actually get to the Cape, or move there.

But you'll need a lot of money if you plan to get a house there some day. Houses are INSANELY expensive in Massachusetts!

Good luck!

My boyfriend came over the other night and he was impliying that he wanted to have sex But i said no Now he won't answer my calls and Hes always with this girl named sarah and shes a slut Do u think hes cheating on me?

*Nikki 14 (link)
My guess would be yes. If not, he's probably heading that way.

But he's being a jerk. Pressuring you for sex at 14 is ridiculous! Don't give in. He's actually MORE likely to leave you, sooner, if you have sex with him. And of course there are a lot of other good reasons to wait.

Never have sex until you feel TOTALLY READY. It needs to be what YOU want, when YOU are ready.

When or if you break up with him, you'll need some time off to recover. But after that, I hope you find a boy who'll value you for YOU, and not just for sex.

They're a little rare, but they're out there. And I think you'll be much happier with a boy who respects you.

Best of luck!

My boyfriend and I have been dating since July 4th and he really liked me before then we've dated in the past and now lately he's been acting like he doesnt care and he says he'll call me back and never does and he says he wants to hang out but in order to hang out he has to call me! how can i get my boyfriend to like me more?!! and i need something really smart and please dont say break up with him because i dont want to..

THanks in advance**
i'll rate high

(link)
I'm sorry. You can't *make* him like you more. And it wouldn't be healthy for you to try.

If you suck up to him and beg him to like you, you'll accomplish two things:

1. He'll despise you, and will probably leave you before too long, and,

2. You'll lose your self-respect. People without self-respect aren't attractive or appealing; they're pathetic. Without self-respect, you're nothing.

And that's no way to live.

So you need to get the whole IDEA of getting him to like you out of your head. Try to live more for yourself. Do your own thing. Let HIM think about ways to get you to like HIM more - you could even play a little hard-to-get!

It might not win him back - to be honest, it sounds like he's heading towards a break-up with you no matter what you do - but it couldn't hurt.

I'm awfully sorry to tell you all this, because I'm sure it isn't pleasant to hear. But it's the truth. You need to live more for yourself, because, paradoxically, it will make you more attractive to others.

Good luck!

ok, my school is starting in about a week, and i jus got my braces off. how do i make them look sparkly white in just 5 full days straight? i want them to look as white as they can get. please help me? how can I do it, wut are sum ways? thank-you (link)
Home kits aren't very effective, and take a while to give any result; five days won't be enough to make much of a difference.

If you (or you parents) have the money, go to your dentist for professional whitening. That's by far the most effective and quick method. It's not terribly cheap, though.

If you can't do that, you can try the home kits...but don't be disappointed if they don't do much. In any case, brush thoroughly after every meal, using a flouride toothpaste (one with baking soda would be particularly good), and floss at least once a day. Try to avoid caffinated drinks like Coke, Pepsi, and coffee; they can stain your teeth a little.

Good luck! And try not to worry. People don't really pay a lot of attention to other people's teeth, unless they're missing or broken.

Or hidden under a pillow. :D

My Bat Mitzvah is in October and I'm JUST starting to learn my haftroah. In my hebrew school, it is belived that women don't need to read from the torah. I can read as much hebrew as I please. I have like no time to learn about 8 lines of hebrew!! I'm getting very stressed out and I'm trying very hard to learn the hebrew but my nerves keep me from doing so!! Does anyone have any suggestions to calm me down and learn the part??!! (link)
The secret to memorization, of course, is repetition, repetition, repetition. :D

If all eight lines are too many at once, start with just one or two. Say them over and over, WAY past the point when you've got them down cold. Normally you'll eventually reach a point where you start making mistakes again. Keep repeating, and once you get past that point, you'll pretty much have burned them into your memory.

That should last for at least five years.

Print out a copy and have it with you at all times. In the bathroom, on the bus, wherever and whenever you have a spare second or two, PRACTICE!

As for relaxation techniques...here are a few links. I can testify to the effectiveness of three deep, slow, cleansing breaths. That ALONE will calm you noticably. After that, try tensing and then relaxing specific areas, moving upward from your feet all the way to your scalp. If you practice that every night in bed (or more often), you'll have it down to a habit in a month.

I'm a singer, and how can I make a bigger sound/be heard without yelling or hurting my voice or singing "too loud"? (link)
Breath control. I'm not a trained singer, but according to everything I've read and heard, breath control is the secret to a bigger voice.

A voice coach could help you with that, but if you can't go to one, you might get some good starting information here:
