ok, i heard that if a guy didnt jack off than his sperm would die in his balls, like alittle bit of his sperm cells would die, and if they dont jack off than its a less chance of them getting a girl preggy. is this true? also, is that what "blue balls" is? like the guys blody makes new sperm cells and still has old cells and thats what makes there balls blue? so is jackin off a "have to do" with a guy? (link)
Basically none of the things that you heard are true. Watch out; there are a lot of stupid myths about how and how not to get pregnant.

Here's a site with some solid facts:

http://www.coolnurse.com/masturbation.htm

Not masturbating won't damage you or kill you, but it might increase your general stress and frustration level. Either way, try not to worry about it.

As for "blue balls", here's some info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_balls

ok, if you read the back of a mountain dew bottle it says like alot of stuff about what its made of, and one of the things its made of is yellow 5, now i heard that yellow 5 kills sperm cells. but i also heard alot of other stuff that is suppoust to kill sperm cells that wasnt ture but i heard this is really really ture. so does yellow 5 kill sperm cells and makes it a less chance to get a girl preggy? (link)
It's clearly derived from an urban legend.

http://www.snopes.com/medical/potables/mountaindew.asp

So drinking Mountain Dew will not reduce the chances of pregnancy in any measurable way, unless it rots your teeth so much that you can't get a date. :D

But perhaps you're asking if douching with Mountain Dew would reduce the odds of pregnancy? That would be a really bad idea for many reasons. It would be MUCH smarter to use real birth control.

If you're female, talk to your OB/GYN about birth control options. If you're male, get some condoms and learn how to use them correctly. That's not a bad idea if you're a girl, either, because condoms are the only birth control method that protects from STDs - except for abstinence, of course.

And if you're underage, I strongly urge you to WAIT. Not because it's "better" to wait, but because until your body and brain have really matured, early sex is likely to be both disappointing and cause serious damage to your sexuality for the rest of your life.

Not to mention the chance of pregnancy, which is often a disaster for teens.

Ok, In all the pictures I take, my skin appears red underneath my eye. like directly underneath it. Could this be becuase of my eye color? I have blue/grey eyes. Thank you (link)
No, that happens to pretty much everybody sometimes, although grey and blue-eyed people (and children) are more likely to experience it. It's caused by flash photography. Here's a link with detailed information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-eye_effect

Addition: Assuming that the picture is taken with a digital camera, all modern camera software comes with red-eye reduction/elimination. If for some reason it's not available in the camera itself, or in the computer software that came with the camera, you can get the same effect from almost any graphics program. You should be able to find out what you need from the help file for whatever graphics or photo software you have.

I hear all these stories on how people make themselves pass out. Just out of innocent curiousity, how do you do that? Someone told me that you press a part of your body or something? (link)
Seriously, don't do it. It's a really bad idea.

Unconsciousness is nothing like sleep - and yes, I do know what I'm talking about. On TV they often show people being knocked out with a punch, for example. What they DON'T tell you is that if you're hit hard enough to lose consciousness, there's a real chance of noticable permanent brain damage or even death.

So don't do it. russianspy1234, I'm really surprised at you.

Has anyone seen the film 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari'? I'm trying to write an essy on German Expressionism in film and it's quite hard! thanks (link)
I haven't seen it, but I don't believe that it's considered "obscure"; it's actually one of the better-known films of its time.

The IMDB and Wikipedia are both good places to start looking for information about movies.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/

okay i was wondering, can you add minutes to your cingular plan without getting a whole new plan, like buying minutes?? if possible, how much would that cost??

thanks!!! (link)
It probably depends on your particular plan. But the best place to get the answer to that would be from Cingular customer service. Dial 611 from your cell phone.

I gave myself a fake tattoo with a safety pin and pen ink...that was about a month ago. Does anyone know how long it takes for it to fade out, or does anyone know how to get rid of it? it is a small tattoo, just a name written really small. (link)
That's not a fake tattoo, it's a real one. Depending on the exact type of ink, and precisely how you used the pin, it might take quite a while to fade...or forever.

You might want to talk to a dermatologist. And by the way, it's not a good idea to give yourself a tattoo like that; sorry to sound like a parent, but A) you don't know if that ink was toxic, and B) if you didn't sterilize the needle, you could have gotten a serious infection. It sounds like you were lucky, except for the permanent tattoo.

Good luck!

Any good way to get gum off of a retainer? I cannot give up gum chewing and usually forget to bring my case to school. At the end of the day it ends up stuck to it, and looks discusting. thanks (link)
There are non-stick chewing gums that are designed for people with dental appliances; Freedent is probably the best-known national brand.

Otherwise, everything I've read says that regular gum can break the wires in your retainer. You can clean it the usual way - toothpaste and cold water - but there's no way to avoid the risk from chewing regular gum.

So i could of had an ipod a long time ago but i wanted to be a "non conformist" so i told my parents i didnt want one

well now i want one really bad cause ive realized that their wayy better then cd players, but now my parents cant afford to buy me an apple ipod

so my question is what kind of normal mp3 player should i get? i want one thats nice looking and not very expensive (as in over $125)
which ones would you reccommend. i need something that holds a ton of songs or at least allows me to put a memory card inside.

Please help. i'll rate 5's for good answers. (link)
Sandisk makes some excellent MP3 players. I have one, and I like it a lot. The price is good, too.

I know that Circuit City carries them. And you could order them from their website.

I love books! I love to read, I'm 15, so I need some more good book suggestions. I like to sci-fi and fantasy books, and I love Nicholas Sparks. So, anyone got any good suggestions? 5's for good suggestions. (link)
I've been a guest speaker on the subject of SF genre literature at a large local convention for more then ten years running, and my personal collection is well over 10,000 books, so this is a VERY partial list. You can write and ask me for more suggestions any time.

SF/fantasy (many of these are classics):
- The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
- Lord of Light, Roger Zelazny
- The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
- The Bridge of Birds, Barry Hughart
- The Foundation series (just the first three books), Isaac Asimov
- The Instrumentality of Mankind (short story collection), Cordwainer Smith
- Norstrila, Cordwainer Smith
- Ringworld, Larry Niven
- The City and the Stars, Arthur C. Clarke
- Starship Troopers, Robert A. Heinlein
- The Amber series, Roger Zelazny
- Cities in Flight, James Blish
- The Devil's Day, James Blish
- Dune, Frank Herbert (the other Dune books are good, although all of them are terribly complicated. Avoid ANYTHING written by his son, Brian Herbet - he's done some "Dune" books, and they're beyond bad)
- anything by Fredric Brown
- The Vlad Talos series by Steven Brust (but make sure to read them in order)
- Lord Valentine's Castle, Robert Silverberg
- The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, volume 1 (probably the best collection of classic short stories available)
- The Dorsai series, Gordon R. Dickson
- The Dragon and the George, Gordon R. Dickson
- The Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat, Harry Harrison
- Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers, Harry Harrison
- Time and Again, Jack Finney
- The God Box, Barry Longyear
- Superstoe, William Borden

I also quite like almost anything by Lawrence Watt-Evans, Robert Sheckley (particularly his short stories), Ron Goulart, David Brin, Lyndon Hardy, Anthony Boucher, Michael Moorcock, James White, and Lord Dunsany.

Some non-genre books you might enjoy (I do):
Kim, Ridyard Kipling
Shogun, James Clavell
A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
I, Claudius, Robert Graves
The Catcher In the Rye, J.D. Salinger
Almost anything by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (you might want to start with "Welcome to the Monkey House")

I know as soon as I'm done with this I'm going to think of 20 other books and authors I should have included, and I'm going to kick myself. :D

Ok so I answered this question about Sporks and somehow it ended up becoming an answer to a question about horses! what the hell?

How and why did this happen? Am I the only person this is happening to? (link)

http://webhome.idirect.com/~donlong/monsters/monsters.htm

Here is a list of creatures. I was wondering if I could use these? Have people copywrited these creatures? Are these fictional creatures known or made up by the creator? (link)
I gave the list a quick look-over, and I didn't see any non-mythological creatures (and I have some experience in this area).

So yes, you can use them, and no, they're not copyrighted. I specifically checked for some popular creatures that I know ARE copyrighted (such as Cthulhu), and they weren't included on the site, so it looks pretty clean.

Since these creatures are all mythological, their creators are unknown - the myths on which they're based go back thousands of years.

okay you know security cameras?? is there a way where the camera can be in your house, building etc etc & you could get the video from another location without wires er anything er going back to the first location for the camera itself??

thanks!! (link)
If the camera is connected to the internet, then the signal can be relayed anywhere without a direct connection from the camera to the viewing location. No problem.

I was wondering what blog site out there will have people always comment on your entries? (link)
None. There's no site that will MAKE people comment on your entries. That's not possible.

You just have to write entries that are interesting enough to get people to WANT to comment on them.

That said, I use LiveJournal.

http://hollylisle.com/fm/Articles/manuscript_formatting.html

I have been using this and it said to use 1.5 margins all around for writing a novel it ended up looking like this.

http://photobucket.com/albums/b286/montrealfanjk/?action=view¤t=untitled.jpg

Should I continue with this format and if not whcih type of format should I use? How many pages for one chapter for that format? How many pages for one chapter with the format I am using now? (link)
A novel is art. There are no rules for how many pages per chapter or anything like that. The important thing is to create the words and get them on paper (or rather, in a file).

However, publishers DO have rules for what formatting you should use for submissions: margins, file formats, etc. Unless your manuscript is in some really bizarre proprietary file format, you'll be easily able to reformat a copy of your file to match the requirements of whichever publisher(s) you submit it to.

What I'm saying is, this is not the time to worry about formatting. It's time to WRITE, to create the very best novel that you can.

For now, use whatever format makes it easiest for you to write.

That said, the format you're using looks fine; and you shouldn't have any trouble using Word. DO make sure to make frequent backups, and keep at least one set of backups somewhere safe away from the others. One good way to do that might be to email the file to yourself every so often at a Gmail address; that way it will be safe on Google's servers. If you don't have a Gmail account and want one, email me (my address is in my column) and I'll give you an invite.

Good luck!

ok so i am going to the gyno for the first time in a month...and i shave my pubes...so i was wondering if the gyno will expect it or if she will lecture me on not doing it? (link)
I very much doubt that she'll have any expectations either way, nor should you expect a lecture - except she might talk to you about being sexually active, since shaving the pubic area kind of implies that you might be showing it to one or more boys.

And if that's the case, definitely talk to her about the whole issue.

what type of things do you study in collage?
specific examples PLEASE. (link)
Well, first off, it's "college", not "collage". Unless you're planning to be in "an artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color". :D

In college you can usually chose many if not most of your courses; you have more freedom than in high school. You should be able to check out the website of a specific college and get the course titles.

Some courses that will probably be offered are an introduction to English literature, Shakespeare, and introductory courses for virtually every subject: history, art, mathematics, physics, biology, meteorology, astronomy, sociology, political science, physical education, etc.

The details of any course depend on the preferences of the instructor. Some might assign reading, and require essays. Others might require you to do lab work, and experiments. My favorite courses were seminars, in which a small group of students would sit with the professor and discuss an issue - having done the reading, of course.

I remember reading Plato, Socrates, the Iliad, the Odyssey, Shakespeare, Le Guin, Ernst Becker, Freud, Karl Marx...just a ton of stuff. It helps a lot to be a good, quick reader.

It also generally helps to be able to write essays quickly and well.

Follow-up: You apparently want to go to college, and yet you misspelled it. One thing that DEFINITELY matters in college is spelling, punctuation, correct capitalization, and grammar.

It's also a good idea to use complete sentences.

How you write reflects how you think.

There is a morning radio show I like to listen to, but it's on so early (5-9am) I miss most of it. How can I set up a tape recorder to start taping this show at 5 am? Kind of like a timer on a VCR. Is there a way to do this with a audio tape? (link)
There are tape decks that will do this for you. Or you can hook up a power timer to a tape deck; I've had success with that.

There are all sorts of power timers, and some are quite cheap. People sometimes use them to turn lights off and on in their houses while they're away on vacation, to discourage burglers. You should be able to pick one up from any department store or hardware store.

The timers usually have one or two plug sockets in the back. You plug your tape deck (or entire stereo) into the timer, and plug the timer into the wall. Set the timer to turn on at the time the show starts (or five minutes earlier), and make sure that you set your tape deck to record before you kill the power.

Not every tape deck will record with a power timer, so you'll need to check that. Press the record button, and then pull out the plug. Wait a minute, then put the plug back in. If the tape deck continues recording, you're all set. Otherwise, you may need to experiment or even get a new recorder.

Some tape decks will let you press the record button even when the power's off, by the way.

Another possibility: have you checked out the radio station's website? They may offer archives of the show there.

Good luck!

I was charging my phone up tonight and I accidently knocked it off from my TV stand into a glass of coke on the floor. I immediatly grabbed it and wiped all the coke off and took out the battery and all that. it lights up but there are no words or sounds. I got this phone about 4 months ago and its a Spring LG. Is my phone completly fried and I need to get a new one or can i fix this? (link)
I'm sorry, but the outlook isn't good for your phone. Coke is just about the worst thing that you can mix with electronics.

You might be able to save it by getting some filtered or distilled water (distilled would be better), moistening a clean cloth, squeezing out most of the water, and wiping your phone down completely. Take out the battery, clean it, and wipe the phone inside, too - gently. Then let it all dry (overnight at least) before re-inserting the battery and turning it on. If it still doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll probably need to have it professionally serviced or replaced. You should check to see if you have a service agreement or phone insurance, because that might save you some of the cost. But they'll probably still charge you SOMETHING, because soaking your phone is a pretty standard reason for them to charge you a replacement fee.

Much as I hate to disagree with another columnist, baking your battery would be EXTREMELY dangerous. It could even cause an explosion or fire.

I've heard about "baking" soaked cell phones before, but that was at 150 ° - and those cell phones had been accidentally WASHED, not dunked in Coke. The sugar in Coke will not "dry away". And 350° is likely to melt your battery at the very least.

Consumer electronics and high temperatures don't mix. If you really get desperate, use a hair dryer on your phone for no more than five minutes at a time - but DON'T get it too hot.

Good luck!

This is so random, but you really look like
Paul Giamatti (link)
Nah, that's just trick photography. I actually look more like Orson Welles. :D
