sbloemeke answered Monday August 22 2005, 9:50 pm: People usually suggest other methods such as trying to become really scared or drink water, but those normally don't work for me. Only 2 ways do.
1. Hold your breath and take a drink of water. The combo of the two methods somehow tend to work a lot for me...
2. Do something else. Something that requires a lot of attention, like a video game, and take your entire mind of hiccupping. Usually, that gets rid of them. [ sbloemeke's advice column | Ask sbloemeke A Question ]
FunnyCide answered Monday August 22 2005, 9:38 pm: [I have hiccups now!]
Hiccups are caused my your diaphragm (the muscle that helps your lungs regulate your breathing) is temporarily off-wack with your lungs. It sortof spasms, but it's uncomfortable because your diaphragm is pushing your lungs up when they're going down. That means your diaphragm is trying to get you to inhale while you're exhaling. Different things work for different people so try one of these :
- Drink water slowly
- Eat peanut butter (it works, but I don't do it cause' I hate peanut butter)
- Exhale deeply, and hold your breath until you feel the hiccup coming on, then try and breathe with the hiccup.
- Breathe deeply, slowly. << I just used this to get rid of my hiccups. And it worked.
- Get someone to scare you. (Doesn't work for me)

Hiccups happen when your diaphragm (a muscle at the bottom of your chest that helps you breath) gets temporarily out of whack and starts spasming.
So you need to find some way to reset it, basically. Most of the things that people have described here have a good chance of working for you; the goal is to stop or slow down your breathing, safely, in order to allow your diaphragm to get back in rhythm.
For myself, taking a few deep breaths, expelling all air from my lungs, and then drinking a large glass of water usually does the trick. I don't try to drink it non-stop, but try to be drinking at least little sips as often as I can; when you're swallowing, the diaphragm usually doesn't spasm.
