Merry Christmas! A Gift From Razhie... (Now a tradition here)
Merry Christmas! A Gift From Razhie... (Now a tradition here)

You know, folks, I can hardly believe we have been on this journey together all these years. Thank you ALL for taking the time to make a difference in so many people's lives.

You, are appreciated, more than you know!

Thanks and Merry Christmas,

DN.

And now... For the 8th year running, a gift from Razhie:

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the net
hundreds were stirring and all were desperate.
Though each day had passed, right down to the last
they STILL had hundreds of questions to ask!

One user was stressed over reckless sex acts,
another was wishing their parents were lax.
A pet was quite sick and Mary was cruel
and dozens of guys were 'sooooooo nice, funny, and cool.'

There was love to be won and hate to endure.
One kissed a girl but still wasn't sure.
One was just bored with nothing to do,
and so many gift-givers STILL had no clue.

So off to Advicenators.com did they go,
with the hope that somebody there might just know.
And those dear advice-givers, so loyal and true
were still there a-posting what they would do.

DangerNerd kept the whole site up: safe, clean and wise.
While CFT was explained why you can't shrink just your thighs,
Solaris addressed one more 'cherry' query,
and Younggrandma dealt with the worst, and still remained cheery.

Rainbowcherrie and Razhie had just told half a town:
"You just cannot be pregnant so please dear calm down!"
When, what to their mystified browsers should appear
but a flash animation of Santa (and his reindeer.)

His jpegs, how jolly! His bits, oh so merry!
(Razhie's grasp of technology: a little bit scary.)
It was Santa alright, everyone would agree,
and he had something to say, to you and to me:

"You've all been so good and it's been a long year,
I've got something for you to bring you all cheer.
It's a question, but not of the usual sort:
It's clear, it's well written, it's unique and it's short."

"It tells you enough, but leaves nothing out.
It don't make excuses, it don't whine or pout.
It's simple, it's intriguing and a tad witty
In fact I would say this question's quite pretty!"

"This grand question is yours... it's just not quite here.
I'll send it your way in the new year.
But tonight all you advisers, for goodness sake,
get away from your computers and go take a break!"

Flash Santa then laughed and then tapped his nose
and with that his window swiftly popped close.
But they hear him exclaim, as their computers shut down,

"Merry Christmas to Advicenators.com! This world really needs you around!"

Please... Calm Down. The World Isn't Ending This Month!
Please... Calm Down. The World Isn't Ending This Month!

Hi everyone!

Rather than continue to remove/handle over 100 "OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING!" questions per day, I have decided to post this video from NASA which explains why the Mayan calendar says NO SUCH THING:

Hopefully that will help people get a grip on the science, instead of the scare tactics some people have been using to promote this idea.

I hope you will all join me in throwing "End Of The World" parties that day. :-)

If you live close enough to me, you can come to mine, but if not... throw your own!

See you on the 22nd. ;-)

My apologies...
My apologies...

I was working on a fix for the site maintenance script on my first full day out of the hospital as we prepare for some changes around here... and I put a ">" where a "<" should have been and removed most everyone's moderator status!

Oi! Sorry about that!

I went ahead and did a quick and dirty fix which should give everyone their mod status back for now. If you feel like you were missed, please contact me via Skype (DangerNerd) and I will get you straightened out right away.

If you are wondering what has been going on with me, and why it has been so quiet at times this last year or so, please check out the 2012 thread in the mod discussion forum.

Let everyone know what you are doing this year as well!

Nice to be back... even if the first thing I did was to de-mod most everyone! :-D

Does this site look weird in IE9?
Does this site look weird in IE9?

Hi everyone!

A user was kind enough to report that since they updated to Internet Explorer 9, the site is really being mangled beyond belief.

See the question here to have a look at her screenshots and see if that is what you are also experiencing.

This is something that MS originally did in IE8, to try and force everyone to recode their pages the way MS wanted. People aren't doing it, so MS invented "compatibility mode" in order to make IE do what it was supposed to do in the first place.

I am adding the meta-tag that is supposed to force IE into compatibility mode, but I don't know if that really works for everyone or not.

Please let me know if you are, or have been, having problems with here. My Inbox.

For those of us forced to keep IE on our machines for various reasons... here is a link to enabling IE's compatibility mode:

Make IE act like it should.

I hope this is the biggest problem you face today. :-)

DN.

P.S. Thanks for everything you do to help people here on Advicenators.com!

Back From The Near Dead...
Back From The Near Dead...

Hello everyone!

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to update you on what has been going on around here. Why? Because I am still alive to give the update.

As of today is has been 2 days short of a month since this ordeal began. Basically, I have been in two different hospitals for almost a month now, with more outpatient treatment yet to come.

September 8th I just didn't feel well. Thought is was just gas or some such annoyance, but 14 hours after the initial onset of the discomfort I found myself being taken to the ER via ambulance.

I spent a week hopped up on morphine while various tests were run, gallstones were discovered and we waited to see if the one stuck in a duct would pass... Well, it did, and they sent me home.

Not even 48 hours later I was in yet worse pain, and I made the journey to a larger hospital about 80 miles away.

In the ER there, they took one look at my ultrasounds and sent a surgeon in to talk with me about getting my gallbladder out ASAP.

About two hours later I was in the operating room.

This is where it gets interesting. The operation was suppose to take less than 30 minutes, and in a couple days I was expected to be capable of going about my normal routine.

The operation lasted more than NINE TIMES the expected time, four and a half hours, and had I not been in the hands of such a gifted surgeon, I would have died on the operating table.

Thank God for the way this went!

I don't want to post the gory details here, but if you are curious you can always write and ask.

Here it is weeks later, complications abound, and I am barely functional.

Apparently, it may be months before I am back up to speed and there may be one or more additional surgeries which will be needed to restore me to full operational capacity.

To those of you that knew about this, I would like to thank you for your prayers and well wishes.

There are a couple people that I really want to thank for keeping things going here while I was in and out of intensive care:

rainbowcherrie, karenR and Peeps.

Without you the site would have completely collapsed during this episode.

All of these people have a great deal going on in their lives right now and for them to make the time to be able to help is really amazing.

I can't thank you enough. Everyone who benefits from this site owes you a great debt of gratitude.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU all!

This situation has brought something to mind... something important to all of you and something which I had never considered before:

What happens to Advicenators and the years worth of effort you have all put in here if I get hit by a bus?

Well, there was no plan in place, which means, had I died that day, the next time the server bill came due, this site would have simply vanished forever.

As of the end of next week, I will have everything in place so that Advicenators and all the help you have given to people will continue on, with or without me.

A note in closing: There is NOTHING like a near death experience to make you take a close look at your life and see where you would like to make some changes. Advicenators will continue and, God willing, I will be around to continue along with it.

There have been so many projects that I was waiting on one thing or another before beginning to implement here. Realizing, rather suddenly, that time is more precious than can be explained without an experience like this, I have no intention of waiting for much of anything anymore.

When I get to where I can sit in a chair for more than a little bit at a time, expect changes.

Thank you all again,

DN.

Fake Advicenator E-mails
Fake Advicenator E-mails

Hello everyone,

It has recently come to our attention that people are getting e-mails like the one listed below. These messages DO NOT come from anyone here at advicenators.com.

These are the same scam e-mails that try to trick people into giving up their account info everywhere else.

I get these daily for yahoo, hotmail, GMail, etc... Now, apparently, we have hit the big-time since they are targeting us.

Please, if you are unsure of an e-mail that appears to come from here, forward it to dangernerd@gmail.com, and I will let you know for sure if it is legitimate or otherwise. One helpful hint: E-mails from the Advicenators.com system do NOT EVER HAVE ATTACHEMENTS.

Thank you for doing your part in keeping the net safe.

Here is the example message:

"Dear Customer,

This e-mail was send by advicenators.com to notify you that we have temporanly prevented access to your account.
We have reasons to beleive that your account may have been accessed by someone else.
Please see the attached document and Follow instructions.

Making it easier to answer more questions?

When you answer a question you will now see the text below on the page that thanks you for your answer:

"Want to answer MORE questions?

Click here and we will pick one for you!

(You will ALWAYS be sent to a question you have not already answered!)"

... I hope this makes it easier still for you to find more questions to answer. If you like, you can accomplish the same thing by hitting the link "Random Question" at the top of the page.

You can click that link as many times as you like, and never see a question you have already answered.

Enjoy!

Finding more questions to answer? (Working!)
Finding more questions to answer? (Working!)

Well folks, due to an unforeseen complication, the random question feature would work correctly only when it felt like it.

That complication (the coding error I made) has been fixed, and I hope you all enjoy being able to answer every question on the site if you so desire.

If you have any further suggestions, please head into the moderator forum and have your say. What? Not a moderator? Why not?

Finding more questions to answer?
Finding more questions to answer?

Hi there everybody!

Lately I have been getting requests from people who are looking to answer more questions than they can easily find. In response, I have been adding ways to help you help more people as easily as possible.

Some have simply been looking at the newly listed questions on the side-bar, which is a good start, but unless you are first in line you miss out on some great questions, and the person you could have helped also misses out on your answer.

The random question link is great... but you keep seeing questions you have already answered. Not any more! The random question link will now hide any questions you have already answered. :-)

I will be making the link more visible here in the next day or two, so that more people have a chance to see how much fun it is to use.

I hope everyone enjoys this as much as the beta-testers did.

Thank you all for making this site what it is!

DN.

Hello everyone, according to plan "A"(Actually we are up to plan "L" now) the server move is completed.

Now begins the process of debugging anything that was broken in transit. If you see anything that looks odd, please forward as much info as possible to: dangernerd@gmail.com with a subject of: "Advicenators Bug Report!"

I will get back to you asap.

Thank you all for your patience.

P.S. I know the featured user stuff on the main page isn't working. It will in a day or so. No worries there.

Ok, so that was fun...
Ok, so that was fun...

We had a false start. For those of you who saw the site come back up, you weren't imagining it... it did... for about an hour.

Unfortunately all the servers and services that make Advicenators run now didn't quite get all sync'd up together.

After a couple grueling days with tech support, it is all better now. This is the theory, anyway.

Thank you all for making Advicenators the wonderful thing that it is.

Thank you all for your patience.

Most of all, thank you for not flooding my e-mail box with "I hate you because the service I don't pay for is off-line, you should DIE!" messages. ;-)

Surprise!!! We are moving your servers!!!
Surprise!!! We are moving your servers!!!

Hello everyone,

Apparently the datacenter where the machines that make Advicenators run are housed decided to just up and move everything to a new building. Charming, no?

The notice was short, and made shorter by my limited access right now, so there was very little prep time before the move.

We have taken the opportunity to migrate to bigger and badder servers in a new datacenter where they, hopefully, won't just decide to redecorate every once in a while.

We will update you when the changeover is complete.

Sorry for the trouble. There really wasn't anything at all we could do about it.

I hope this year brings you everything you need to become a better person... even if it isn't what you wanted.

Have a fantastic 2009! Let us make the very best of what is sure to be a very bumpy ride through the next year. We can do it! :-)
