Merry Christmas! A Gift From Razhie... (Now a tradition here)
Merry Christmas! A Gift From Razhie...

I thought you all might enjoy this as much as those on the moderator forum have, so here is a gift from Razhie:

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the net
hundreds were stirring and all were desperate.
Though each day had passed, right down to the last
they STILL had hundreds of questions to ask!

One user was stressed over reckless sex acts,
another was wishing their parents were lax.
A pet was quite sick and Mary was cruel
and dozens of guys were 'sooooooo nice, funny, and cool.'

There was love to be won and hate to endure.
One kissed a girl but still wasn't sure.
One was just bored with nothing to do,
and so many gift-givers STILL had no clue.

So off to Advicenators.com did they go,
with the hope that somebody there might just know.
And those dear advice-givers, so loyal and true
were still there a-posting what they would do.

DangerNerd kept the whole site up: safe, clean and wise.
While CFT was explained why you can't shrink just your thighs,
Solaris addressed one more 'cherry' query,
and Younggrandma dealt with the worst, and still remained cheery.

Rainbowcherrie and Razhie had just told half a town:
"You just cannot be pregnant so please dear calm down!"
When, what to their mystified browsers should appear
but a flash animation of Santa (and his reindeer.)

His jpegs, how jolly! His bits, oh so merry!
(Razhie's grasp of technology: a little bit scary.)
It was Santa alright, everyone would agree,
and he had something to say, to you and to me:

"You've all been so good and it's been a long year,
I've got something for you to bring you all cheer.
It's a question, but not of the usual sort:
It's clear, it's well written, it's unique and it's short."

"It tells you enough, but leaves nothing out.
It don't make excuses, it don't whine or pout.
It's simple, it's intriguing and a tad witty
In fact I would say this question's quite pretty!"

"This grand question is yours... it's just not quite here.
I'll send it your way in the new year.
But tonight all you advisers, for goodness sake,
get away from your computers and go take a break!"

Flash Santa then laughed and then tapped his nose
and with that his window swiftly popped close.
But they hear him exclaim, as their computers shut down,

"Merry Christmas to Advicenators.com! This world really needs you around!"

I Have NOT Died...

I Have NOT Died...

... at least not yet. :-)

Just thought I should dispel the rumor going around about my death, and explain my absence.

Things have been really exciting around the house here! While I am not ready to go into the details on that just yet, it has really caused me to re-evaluate things.

I have been active behind the scenes here, but haven't really had time to get personally involved with the user side of the site.

That all changes now.

For months I have been working outside my regular business in an effort to keep everything going.

I even spent a month in Montana (just returned from that) working for a company there. During that time, my wife did the best she could to keep things going here.

I will be working on the site full time, or as full time as I can and still eat.

My Gmail inbox currently, as of this minute, contains 26,988 UNREAD messages.

If you have e-mailed me, it is in your best interest to send again, as I could be MONTHS digging myself out of this hole.

This site is very important to me, and I feel like I haven't been here enough as of late.

I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate everything you guys do to make this site what it is, and will do everything I can to be worthy of all the help you have given me in making this site what it is today! :'-)

One more note... YG (younggrandma) is a truly amazing individual!

I know you knew that already... but are you ready for this? She bought gift memberships for:

ygsgirl

WiseAl

HectorJr

Razhie

... Just because she wanted to help the site and show appreciation to some of the users here.

Oh, and that reminds me... "WiseAl", is now "Alin75." (One of the privileges of paid accounts is that you can change your username as often as you like.)

Thank you all for your patience with me, as I work towards making this site sustainable.

Sincerely,

DN.

Site Insults and Apology!
Site Insults and Apology!

Hello everyone,

I am hoping most of you have seen the most critical thing which has ever been posted on this site:

The original complaint

... If you haven't read this, please do.

Today there is another post from the same user which I think you should all see:

The Sincere Apology

I hope you will all join me in accepting the apology as presented.

Everyone has had a bad day and done something less than good as a result.

Thanks for banding together and showing me that some of you DO care about the site.

Time For Categories...

Time For Categories...

Hello everyone!

Time for a category overhaul. I know it is long overdue, but the time is now.

If you have a category, or a whole LIST of categories, you would like to see included in the update, please e-mail them to me:

dangernerd@gmail.com

... When I have what I feel is a workable list from all your contributions I will start re-tooling the category selection.

I will most likely be re-writing the category handler from scratch. When it is done, the mods will be able to MOVE questions to the right categories. Won't that be nice?

So you are all ready to send me a nice list of categories? Great! Just one more thing... How should they be formatted?

If you only have one or two, just send them any old way.

What do you do if you want send a bunch of things?

Well, instead of sending me:

dogs,cats,birds,rodents,other

How about:

Pets->Dogs
Pets->Cats
Pets->Birds
Pets->Rodents
Pets->Other

... or something along those lines.

I will combine the best of everyone's lists and set everything up.

This is going to be a really big project, and I would like to thank you in advance for all your help!

I look forward to hearing from you.

DN.

P.S. I have a contest in mind for the near future. Any ideas for prizes would be appreciated. Pretty much all I have in mind is the iPod nano. Let me know what you think. $100-200 range.

Absolutely nothing. Have fun.

If You Can't Login

Are cookies enable in your browser?

Do you have anything like Norton Internet Security running?

Anything else that could be keeping cookies from being set during your stay here?

What ISP (Internet company) do you use?

Are there any diagnostic codes displayed on the login screen?

A very small subset of people are having a problem and I have yet to figure out the connection between them.

Thanks for your help,

DN.

Stupid Spam Attack

Stupid Spam Attack

Hello everyone,

We have been invaded by African scam artists.

You have probably received e-mails like what they are posting here, and probably know all about the scam.

If you are in any doubt, let me assure you that anything which looks like the letter pasted below is total crap.

Do not respond to these people. They are criminals of the worst kind.

If you receive any more "questions" like these, make sure to file and abuse report right away.

We will ban/delete these as fast as you make us aware of them.

Thank you for your help.

From: Miss Monic Kone
Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire.
Email :decentmonic@yahoo.fr

Dearest One,

REQUEST TO BE MY GUARDIAN AND THEN HELP ME THUS:

Good day and how are you today? I hope fine? After going through your profile, permit me to inform you of my desire of asking you to be a guardian or foster parent to me and then help me out in what i am about to tell you.
My name is Monic Kone (18).I am the only daughter of Late Mr. & Mrs. Mark C Kone. my father was a very wealthy cocoa merchant here in Abidjan, the economic capital of Cote D'Ivoire. He was poisoned to death by his business associates on one of their outings on a business trip. My mother died when i where babie.
Before the death of my father on Sept. 2004 in a private hospital here in Abidjan, he secretly called me by his bed side and told me that he has the sum of eight million two hundred thousand United State Dollars USD ($8.200,000) deposited in a suspense account in one of the big banks here in Abidjan. He told me that he used my name (Monic Kone) as the next of Kin in depositing the money.

He then strongly advised me not to seek for assistance in the investment of the money from his lawyer nor any of his friend here but to seek for a foreign partner from a country of my choice (outside our country, Cote D'Ivoire) that willl assist me in the wise investment of the money.I have since left the money in the bank with the view of my making use of it for investment purposes after my education carrier here.
But as you may be already aware by now, our country (Cote D’Ivoire) is presently at political crises. Rebels have already taken over the whole Nort hern part of the country and making efforts towards the capture of the commercial center of the country, Abidjan, where i am now.

For this ugly development in this country, i have now decided to take quick actions and have this money transferred out of this country before it is too late to do that. I now want to transfer it out and use it for investment purpose like real estate management or hotel management. Because of this i am honorably seeking your assistance in the following ways:

(1) To serve as a guardian to me and then assist me transfer the money into your bank account. (2) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education and then settle there parmanently.

If you accept to stand as my guardian or foster parent to me, i need not discuss on any percentage with you as you have to see the whole money as yours and then assist me invest it. But if you still want a percentage, I am willing to offer you , 20 % of the total money as compensation for your assistance. Pleas tell me if you feel the percentage i offered is not ok by you.

As soon as I receive your concrete assurance to assist me with my proposal and also your full contact address/phone number, I will then give the bank your contact information and then tell them to transfer the money into your account as i want to come over to stay with you parmanently. The bank will then contact you and communicate with you on the transfer. You shall then be giving me information on when the transfer will be over. I will also send my pictures to you and shall also need yours too.

No matter what your decision may turn out to be, please i beg you to keep this highly secret for my safety, as i believe that those that killed my Daddy are still after me. Please reply me through this my more private and confidential email box:decentmonic@yahoo.fr
Thanks and God bless you .

Best r egards,
Miss Monic Kone.

People Answering OLD Questions

People Answering OLD Questions

Hello Everyone,

I recently received an e-mail of distress over someone answering a question the asker had forgotten about.

You have to remember a couple things about this site... questions are forever. Google indexes our site, so it is possible someone found that through a search and tried to help you.

The other thing to remember is this: Once you ask a question, the answers serve to help others with the same problem.

In other words, don't get frustrated because someone answered your question. Just rate the advice accordingly.

Go into your question and add "Additional Info" to the question explaining how you resolved the problem.

That way the next person who finds it via search knows how to solve it, as well as knowing that you already have the problem handled.

Never be mad at someone for answering a question late, they were trying to help.

Thank you,

DN.

Spammer attack...

Hello everyone,

The site is being plastered with messages that look like this:

ycfuium2iuav ut4okqq50b46bgv glgwu1vmh5u3g51m hsogh8z90rwe

... If you receive one of these, e-mail me the link to the question.

DO NOT DELETE IT!

We are in touch with the internet company of the person doing it, and need all the proof we can pass along to get their account permanently shut down.

Thank you,

DN.

Are People Asking You Stupid Questions?
Are People Asking You Stupid Questions?

Hello everyone,

I just banned a user who was asking streams and streams of really pointless questions. Example:

Example Question

Now, as you read this, please realize that she had already asked this same user over 30 questions.

She did the same thing to everyone on her favorites list.

If you get a question that you do not want to answer... REJECT IT!

Why? Simple: If you answer one, they will send you another 30 equally stupid questions.

Make it a part of your routine here to help keep the site clean, and your column nice to read, by rejecting questions like this.

Thank you,

DN.

Sharing account info... DON'T!

Hello everyone,

Apparently there is a new trend here:

Giving other people your login info.

I discovered this after deleting several accounts and hearing from people that they didn't post whatever got their account nuked.

After investigation it appears that some people willingly give their account login info to other people, then are SHOCKED that they actually USED the info.

A little hint for you folks: There is only one reason to ask for someone else's account info:

To log in and do something you wouldn't do on your OWN account.

If your account has been deleted, and you gave someone else your info, don't write me... write them.

While we are on the subject let us briefly cover
Password safety:

Bad passwords:

helloworld

mydogspot

myname

(Any English words singularly or in pairs are very easy passwords to crack.)

Good passwords:

675My321Name@

b628d79&(^B&ioh2

... anything with both upper and lower case characters, numbers and punctuation characters, over 8 characters in length, is a good password.

16 character is better.

Keep your account info safe.

DN.

This is still not a chat board...

Hello everyone,

Lately (the last 7 days) it seems as though a great many people have decided to start posting personal comments as questions again.

For those of you that are new here, and didn't read the FAQ, this site is for giving and getting advice.

If you want to tell someone they are pretty, or that you added them to your favorites or anything else that is not asking for, or giving advice:

Write them an e-mail.

Send them an instant message.

Look them up on Skype... anything, but do NOT post personal comments to their ADVICE ONLY inboxes.

We are still progressing in the right direction, thanks to all the people who have turned their columns around and are actually using them for advice.

In honor of those people who are doing the right thing now, and all the others (thank you) from whom we have had no problems, we will not be tolerating a return to all the mindless jibber-jabber that has clogged people's inboxes since this site was started.

Please file abuse reports on columns used primarily for chat.

Thank you for your help.

DangerNerd.

Get rid of spam...

Hello everyone,

I like to share things I find that work well for me, with others.

In this case, You see that Banner at the top of the screen? The one with the blue frog?

Click that banner and sign up for the Blue Frog Network's e-mail version of the do-not-call list.

You can join a list that opts YOU out of spam.

It has made a difference for me, and I believe you will see the same results.

So how does it work?

You sign up at the site after clicking that banner.

You tell it which e-mail addresses you want to be protected.

You install the Blue Frog client, which sits in your system tray.

You report spam, by forwarding it to a special address at the Blue Frog site.

The Blue Frog automatically attempts to opt you out of whatever spam list you are on.

If you keep getting spam from the same people, and this is the fun part, the Frog, will plaster their site's order forms and comment forms with requests for them to filter their e-mail list through the Blue Frog Opt-Out list. (Which you are on by then.)

This is done without revealing your address. ;-)

So, the spammer goes and runs his list through the Blue Frog site, and it removes your e-mail because you have it protected by Blue Frog.

It really does work.

Yes, I still get spam. The reason? New spammers trying the old list they got from somewhere else, or have harvested from the web somewhere.

Dealing with 10 spam messages a day is better than dealing with 150+ which is what happened on my main account.

Now, here is the important part:

Make sure to sign up ASAP, since it is due to go pay soon. People who sign up now, will always have free access.

Saving the best for last:

If you have a GMail account (write me if you want one), a Hotmail account or a Yahoo account, there is a pluging for the firefox browser that will report your spam AUTOMATICALLY!

Help me smack the crap out of spammers, join the Frog Network NOW and take back your mailbox.

Have fun,

DangerNerd.

The Ups and Downs of New Servers...

Hello again,

Just so you know, there are adjustments that have to be made as I fine-tune things.

Some of these require that I re-start the server.

When I re-start the server, the site will be unavailable for 2-3 minutes.

Please don't e-mail me unless you see downtime of greater than 5 minutes.

Thank you,

DangerNerd.

Site Transfer... Completed!

Hello again everyone,

Sorry for the delay in updating news, it took me this long to get everything squared away with the new host. (At least I think it is squared away.)

The site is sitting on it's new server and it looks like everything went fairly smooth and easy for most of you.

The new host will offer me the chance to do somethings I have been wanting to do for some time, but had been unable to due to limitations of the old server.

I will not tip my hand as to what is first, since it will take a while to accomplish and you know how much you like suspense, right? :-)

Thank you for the patience on the changeover.

DangerNerd.

New Server for Advicenators.com...!

Hello everyone,

Tonight sometime, probably around midnight eastern time (GMT -5) there will appear a graphic at the top of all pages on the site.

That graphic will briefly explain that anything you do from that point, until you see the site again without the graphic, will be lost.

Here is how this works:

I move all the files and the database over to the new server.

I tell the company that keeps track of our domain name that it needs to point to the new server.

That company's machines have to tell all the other companies that keep track of these things to point to the new server.

These machines, called DNS, or DomainNameServers, all talk to each other every so often. Some talk regularly, some aren't so swift.

In short all this takes time.

Your ISP (the company you connect to the internet through) may have the update in an hour, or as long as three days.

Basically, once you see the site again without the warning graphic at the top, it will be safe to start using the site again just like you always have.

So... why are we doing this? We had trouble with our current web host, and had no choice but to move everything on short notice.

I am sorry for the downtime... it cannot be avoided.

Please take any questions to the chat room, which will be working through the whole time.

DangerNerd...

P.S. Anyone who e-mails me and asks questions that have already been answered here, will either have their e-mail ignored, or their account suspended from the site.

Gmail Accounts?

Hello everyone,

Some of you may have wanted a FREE Google Gmail account, but didn't know anyone who could invite you. Well, I can.

If you didn't know, the service is free, but to keep the number of people down, you have to be a friend of someone who already has an account to get in... and they have to invite you.

After seeing the number of people who's crappy free e-mail services screwed up the link in their verification e-mails, and knowing what a pain in the butt AOL is when it comes to actually GETTING the e-mail you want, it dawned on me that I should let you all know that:

I have some invitations left. :-)

E-mail me, even if you think you are too late, since they give out more invites every so often.

Click Here to request an invitation!

If that doesn't work for you:

dangernerd@gmail.com

... you can copy and paste this address in by hand.

P.S. They have this little program that sits in your system tray and tells you when you have new messages. That alone makes it better than any other free e-mail account I have had. :-)
