I'm a singer, and how can I make a bigger sound/be heard without yelling or hurting my voice or singing "too loud"?

SilentOne answered Tuesday August 23 2005, 4:10 am: Difficult to explain, but try breathing more from your "stomach" region than where you think the air should go. When you breath in your stomach should expand, when you breath out it should get thinner (It sounds stupid, but it's a common thing that people do because they go "breathing in, hmm my stomach should be going in",etc- that's un-natural, and bad) As someone said, your shoulders don't need to rise.
Opening your mouth very wide often makes sound you produce clearer, meaning people further away will be able to hear better.
Projecting more air while singing adds volume to the sound, without being damaging. Sing normally, but don't be 'stingy' with the air, also don't overdo it, because that will affect the sound.
The best exercise in projecting your voice over distance is to visualise a point in the distance that you want the sound to reach, and do your best to sing Towards, through that point. The extra concentration often improves your volume.

ScratchesOnTheWall answered Monday August 22 2005, 3:28 pm: Try feeling like you're pushing your voice down into your body, work on strengthening and using your diaphragm and opening, not ust your mouth, but your throat. You do not want to be singing from your thraot (if you try to belt singing like this you will damage your voice) but it needs to be untensed in order to carry the sound forwards.
Also, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your particular body will have a part to play. People's vocal chords are constructed differently- the reason why people have different ranges- and this can also have a part to play in how loud your voice is capable of being. So train it but don't push it over it's limit.
Erinn_the_bamf answered Monday August 22 2005, 2:13 pm: Open your mouth wider. To know if your mouth is wide enough put two fingers right in front of your ear. Start opening your mouth. You will feel a hole widening. Once the ballpoints of both your fingers fit in there it is wide enough. Also sing from your diaphram. I hope I hlped!
