Rinsing with salt water will help, by killing bacteria in your mouth (which slow down the healing process). Hydrogen peroxide is extremely useful, too; it reacts to infection and bubbles it out. By the way, hydrogen peroxide is what your own white cells use to kill infection in your body. In tiny, tiny amounts, of course.
Hydrogen peroxide is EXTREMELY cheap; you can pick up a bottle of the generic stuff in any drugustore. Make sure that the bottle specifically says that it can be used orally, or as a mouthwash.
Now, peroxide does have a drawback: it doesn't have a strong flavor, but it has a really nasty aftertaste. So I recommend mixing it with an equal amount of mouthwash.
Apart from that, make sure to stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water. Rinse your mouth with the peroxide/mouthwash combo just before going to bed. You'll probably be *amazed* by how much better your mouth feels the next morning.

Though it might sting some, the peroxide will kill any germs / bacteria and promote healing. If you have cuts on your gums, you can put teething gel [for babies] on it, but I wouldn't put it on your tounge. Don't worry, it might be painful now, but it'll soon heal.
