Maybe give some free advice about: Nutrition? grunty answered Sunday August 19 2007, 4:55 am: I think I can answer your question better than anyone because I have had Anoexia for 13 years. I am in recovery from what is called Anorexia-Purging type or anoexia w/purging. Most people without eating disorders don't know that there are MANY eating disorders besides anorexia and Bulimia. There is Anorexia-restricting type( where they just restrick there food intake and contrary to what people believe Anorexics DO EAT. They just don't eat much that is why they lose so much weight. There are all kinds of different restricters-ones that eat only low calorie foods( like veggies, water...) and others that eat some low calorie and some regular calorie foods) and There are others that have other food combinations. Anorexia-purging type( what I had ) is where you eat either small portions of low calorie foods or normal calorie foods and then purge it( throw it up) immediately. It can be once or multiple times a day depending on how many times the person eats in a day. For me, I purged up to 36 times a day but that doesn't mean I ate 36 times a day. I purged multiple times after I ate to make sure every bit of food was out of me. Bulimics are usually of noraml weight but some can be under weight and there are 3 diifernt types, ones that purge after eating LARGE quanitys of food, ones that doesn't purge by thowing up but purge through exercising excessicely or ones that just doesn't eat for a few days after eating large quanities( a binge)And there is another Eating disorder called binge eating disorder where people binge but don't do any purging of any way. There also are people who are Anorexic and Bulimic-They restrict their food and also binge on large quanities of food and purge like bulimics. So there are all the kinds of eating disorders: anoreixa-restricting type, anorexia-purging type, anorexia and bulimia type, bulimia, exercise bulimia and binge eating disorder.
Now are the lists of ways that anorexia and bulimia all can harm your body:
Osteoporosis from not getting your period do to lack of fat in the body and also being at such a low weight.( Getting your period gives esrogen to your bones which keeps them health and strong. Without the estrogen your bones become brittle and break easliy. After only 3 years of having Anoreixa I had the bones of an 85 year old woman.( I broke my right food just from regular walking a year after having Anorexia. I wasn't even diagnosed yet then and my foot doctor was the first to even mention the diseae to me.
No energy do to lack of food. Food is fuel for your body like gas for a car. Food=energy.
Your hair can fall out from lack of nutrients from food. Your nails become brittle from the same reason.
You shrink your stomach to the point where 1 cup of any beverage makes you full for hours from restricting your food intake. When you start to eat a normal amount of food, your stomach hurts like it's going to explode. You can only eat a tiny bit of food per sitting bexcause of this. If you are in a hospital because of medical reasons you will be forced to eat food until your stomach hurts so much and you are so full that you can sit up straight for a good 3-4 hours.
Your elecrolytes( potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, calcium, chloride,....) become too low or too high and medcial complications can occur from this( muscle spasms, pins and needle feeling in your hands, feet, mouth, lips which can lead to heart problems- Heart attack, heart arrythmias, heart palpatations,..) Not eating enough and also purging can make your elecroltes off so People with all eating disorders can experince this
People who purging can damge their teeth by eroding them from all the stomach acid and also can erode the enamal off them. Purging can also ruture your esophagus by forceful vomiting, can also create any GI problems that you can amagine. Consipation, diarreah, or both.
If people abuse laxatives, either pills or enemas, can cause them to be dependant on them and can not have a bowel movement without them. Ememas are the MOST harmful laxative their is and I wish stores would put it behind the counter. They strip away the ling of your colon/rectum and irrittes it plus it not only gets the bad bacteria out of you but also the good bacreria that you do need in your intestines. When someone stops taking laxatives they have all kinds of compications like edema in the legs/feet and bloated stomach from all the water that is held in the body from NOT taking them. You can also mess up your electrolytes by taking laxitives also because so much liquid that comes out contains things that your body needs.
Those are just some of the harm that Eating disorders can do. There are many more and Im sure there's a lot more that I am not aware of.
I have had my fair share of them having been hospitalized 26 times and 3 of those times I called 911. Well once, the other 2 my mother did because I couldn't talk or move from an electolyte imbalance that caused me to have TETANY. google that word and you will find out what it is. It's the most painful thing that I have experienced. I was told by the dcotor the first time I had it that if my mom hadn't dialed 911 when she did I would have died. TETANY left untreated leads to cardiac arrest.
Please get the word out about ALL THE COMPLICATIONS and all the differnt combinations of eating disorders. The more people know the more likely( I HOPE) that people will know the signs and get help. Dealing with this for 13 years is not what I call a happy life. If I could go back in time and change things I would in a heartbeat.I thankfully have seen the light at the end of the tunnel and have been in recovery for 3 years. It took me 10 LONG years to find that light. [ grunty's advice column | Ask grunty A Question ]
SouthernGirl323 answered Wednesday November 30 2005, 10:47 pm: Anorexia is when you starve yourself. its dangerous because of the weight loss involved. girl's who are underweight loose their period, and therefore might loose their ability to have kids later on in life, and if enough weight is lost, there is a great risk of heart-attacks because once there is no body-fat to eat, your body starts going after muscle and as your heart is a muscle, your body will start eating it to compensate for the lack of caloric intake. many other illnesses also go along with anorexia, including depression, anemia (lack of iron in red blood cells), dehydration, malnutrition, osteoporosis, and many others.
anorexia is also hard because it's so hard to recover from because its as much a mental disease as a physical one and so as long as one wants to loose weight, they will most likely not try to recover from anorexia. :) [ SouthernGirl323's advice column | Ask SouthernGirl323 A Question ]
ananas answered Saturday August 13 2005, 4:45 pm: Whatever the cause of an eating disorder, the effects can be damaging - if not downright devastating and life threatening. People who weigh at least 15% less than the normal weight for their height may not have enough body fat to keep their organs and other body parts healthy.
A person with anorexia can do damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys by not eating enough. The body slows everything down as if it were starving, causing a drop in blood pressure, pulse, and breathing rate. (For girls, this starvation mode may mean they stop getting their periods.) Lack of energy can lead people with anorexia to feel light-headed and unable to concentrate. Anemia (lack of red blood cells) and swollen joints are common in people with anorexia, as are brittle bones. Anorexia can cause a person's hair to fall out, fingernails to break off, and a soft hair called lanugo to grow all over the skin. In severe cases, eating disorders can lead to severe malnutrition and even death.
People with bulimia often have constant stomach pain. In fact, bulimia can actually damage a person's stomach and kidneys as a result of constant vomiting. Bulimia can also cause a person's teeth to decay because of the acids that come up into the mouth while vomiting. The person may also develop "chipmunk cheeks," which occur when the salivary glands permanently expand from throwing up so often. Like girls with anorexia, girls with bulimia may stop getting their periods. And, most dangerous of all, the constant purging can lead to a loss of the mineral potassium, which can contribute to heart problems and even death.
The emotional pain of an eating disorder can take its toll, too. When a person becomes obsessed with weight, it's hard to concentrate on much else. Many times people with eating disorders become withdrawn and less social. Teens with anorexia can't join in on snacks and meals with their friends or families, and they often don't want to break from their intense exercise routine to have fun. Individuals with bulimia often spend a lot of mental energy on planning their next binge, spend a lot of their money on food, and hide in the bathroom for a long time after meals.

When you have anorexia you think that you are fat even though you are really skinny. anorexia is when you do not eat. and that harms your body by not giving it what it needs to work..
bulimic is bad for your body because yes, you are eatting . but you are throwing it up. so there is nothing left in your stomach and all the acid that comes up when you throw up it horrible for you.
both are extremly bad for you. they make your stomach week and if/when you start to eat again you can not hold stuff in it.
also you will get tired and super skinny. to the point where its ugly.

JustAskAlli answered Sunday July 31 2005, 4:50 am: Your thinking of buliemia.
Anorexia is a disorder, not only of the body. But also the mind, its a mental thing. You starve yourself for various reasons.
Buliemia is a disorder of making yourself puke.
Their BOTH VERY SERIOUS, and if you know anyone that has these disorders, or its YOU you need serious help & attention.
Your question caught my eye at the end, "then whats the harm right."
First off, you can name a million harms about these affects, even for buliemia:
Depression, No nutrition intake, Drowsy, Nausiation, High fevers, throat problems, heart problems, and many other things.
crazygoober2006 answered Friday July 29 2005, 9:40 pm: Anorexia makes the body really weak. Because by throwing up, your losing the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy by not fighting illnesses and such. You could be hospitalized and if not treated, it could nearly kill you. lyDia_LoU answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:16 pm: Well if you aren't getting anything from your food then you'll die eventually because of your lack of nutrients. Don't plan on having a baby because you won't be able to get the nutrients it needs to sustain life. And something that it hurts your throat a lot because it's like used to having the food come up. You'll get disgustingly skinny and really no guy likes that. People will call you anorexic behind your back if you look like it and people will talk to you and think of you differently. Not to mention is just so freakin dumb! If you want to lose weight do it the right way- don't be so lazy. Oh and you also won't have much energy and since you'll always be hungry you won't be able to concentrate in class or at your job. You won't be able to handle kids when you get older or a good job because you'll be tired and weak. If you want more facts about why anorexia is the dumbest thing since diet pills then google it and find some answers from scientist. The ONLY good thing about it is that you'll lose weight. And not that quickly either. First you'll gain weight. And everytime you do actually eat you'll gain more wieght from it then normal people because your body doesn't know when it will recieve it's next food. Sorry to be harsh but to me it's just so dumb to see girls throw their lives away just to fit a picture of what they think they should be. [ lyDia_LoU's advice column | Ask lyDia_LoU A Question ]
Azngangsta answered Friday July 29 2005, 5:37 am: Ok, it harms your body because you are depriving your body of essential vitiamins and minerals that it needs to function properly. Nevaeh314 answered Friday July 29 2005, 4:50 am: First, anorexia isn't puking up what you eat, that's bulimia. Anorexia is to completely stop eating, or eat severely under the amount of calories that your body needs to survive. Anorexia is deadly. When your body doesn't get the calories or carbohydrates it needs to give your body an energy source to metabolize, your body starts to eat itself. You might burn fat at first, but it starts to eat away at your heart, lungs, muscle, and every other major body part. You lose bone mass, an it puts severe strain on your heart, which will cause it to fail. An anorexic girl in my freshman biology class a few years ago literally couldn't sit down because her leg bones would break. There was nothing there to cushion them, any muscle, fat, and bone mass had been completely depleted. Anorexia isn't only a physical problem, it is a psychological condition, and if you suspect that you or anyone else you know might have it, don't hesitate to tell someone you trust /immediately./
Bulimia is also deadly. Besides runing your metabolism, self-esteem, and staining your teeth, it will kill you. When you throw up, the acid from your stomach eats away at the lining of your esophogas, and if you do it often (as is the case with bulimia) it will burn holes through it. (Btw, your esophogas is the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach.) Bulimia can cause ulcers (internal bleeding from holes in the lining of your stomach), hernias (The protrusion of an organ or other bodily structure through the wall that normally contains it; a rupture), and you can suffocate because when you throw up the food can get into your lungs. Like anorexia, it places extreme strain on your heart and will lead to heart failure and death.
If you're trying to lose weight, exercise and eat a well-balanced diet, it's not worth dying over. If you think you might have an eating disorder, or are obsessing over what you eat, talk to your doctor or your parents. They'll know how to help you get a healthy lifestyle.
Also remember that bulimia and anorexia affect 1 in every 12 girls from their teen years to their early twenties. Most, if not all of these cases spring from a psychological misconception of body image. In 99.9999% of all cases with eating disorders, the girls are at the right weight for their bodies or are even very underweight, but that's not how they see themselves. If you think you have a problem with any of this, talk to someone right away.
Hope this helps!

Anorexia is when you starve yourself. It harms your body in many ways. Just take a moment to think---you STARVE yourself. It isn't good. And obviously that*s harmful because it shuts down (over time) your organs (i recently had a friend who had to go to the hospital for 2 months for anorexia..not good) and you puke when your bulimic. And it*s bad because your still starving yourself. you eat but a few mins later you puke, leaving no food in your belly. ALSO the acid from your stomach begins to eat and eat away @ your esophagus burning it away... not good! anyway i donno if your thinkin bout trying one of those things then dont, they are both VERY harmful and can both kill you over time (depending on how severe they are) hope i helped, xoxo chelsea [ craZlilchelC152's advice column | Ask craZlilchelC152 A Question ]
azngemini answered Friday July 29 2005, 3:46 am: I used to be anorexic and bulimic, but only for a short period of time, like a month. when you're anorexic, you'll feel weak all the time, and when you're like hungry and you have eaten all day, you might feel dizzy and you'll probably faint. your nails will turn into a yellowish color because of the lack of nutrients, and your skin will look dry also because of the lack of nutrients. anorexia slows down your metabolism, meaning you wont burn fat as fast as you used too. some people have actually DIED from being anorexic, and others have been close to death. when you're anorexic, you'll keep feeding lies to yourself, and your confidence shrinks. an anorexic person will never think he/she is skinny enough. and they will never be happy with their body.
i dont think being bulimic will kill you, but it sure does harm your body. i kno you said puking will stain your teeth, and that's true, but the acid from the vomit actually makes your teeth decay and rot. when I was bulimic, I was coughing constantly because the acid from the vomit was ruining my esophagus. it doesnt really make you really skinny because you're still eating food and stuff, but it's still really bad for your body
beachhun101 answered Friday July 29 2005, 2:51 am: i think you might mean bulemia. bulemia is when you "binge" which means you eat a lot of things fast, usually very unhealthy, and force yourself to throw up after. this disorder screws up your metabolism, good chemicals in your body, and some of your body functions. this is very serious, its not just about staining your teeth. but if you mean anorexia- thts when you starve yourself, and thats definetly not healthy either. your body isnt gettin the proper nutrition it needs. all eating disorders screw up chemical balances in your body. if you have one of them, i suggest you go to somebody that can help you. Mackenzie answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:57 am: First of all, someone with Anorexia Nervosa will starve themself. They don't really throw up, because they simply do not eat. A common eating disoder with a symptom of throwing up would be Bulimia Nervosa. And Bulimia Nervosa does a HELL of a lot more than stain your teeth!! OBVIOUSLY you haven't looked into this. X0C0URT answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:46 am: It's scary to hear you say that. First, the puking goes along with bulimia, not anorexia. The main harm in anorexia is that it's addictive and will eventually kill you. If that's not enough of a reason, think about the fact that it can cause major organs to shut down, heart attacks can occur, or the risk of osteoporosis. The thing is, there are certain nurtrients you NEED to survive. If it were ok not to eat, then food wouldn't have been created. It's a nesseccity. Please think about this.

ncblondie answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:26 am: Without treatment, up to twenty percent (20%) of people with serious eating disorders die.
If not stopped, eating disorders can lead to irreversible physical damage and even death. Eating disorders can affect every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. The following is a partial list of the medical dangers associated with anorexia nervosa.
-Irregular heartbeat, cardiac arrest, death
-Kidney damage, death
-Liver damage (made worse by substance abuse), death
-Destruction of teeth, rupture of esophagus, loss of muscle and bone mass
-Damage to lining of stomach; gastritis, gastric distress
-Disruption of menstrual cycle, infertility (see below)
-Delayed growth and permanently stunted growth due to undernutrition. Even after recovery and weight restoration, person may not catch up to expected normal height.
-Weakened immune system
-Icy hands and feet
-Swollen glands in neck; stones in salivary duct, "chipmunk cheeks."
-Excess hair on face, arms, and body
-Dry, blotchy skin that has an unhealthy gray or yellow cast
-Anemia, malnutrition. Disruption of body's fluid/mineral balance (electrolyte imbalance, loss of potassium; can be fatal)
-Fainting spells, seizures, sleep disruption, bad dreams, mental fuzziness
-Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), including shakiness, anxiety, restlessness, and a pervasive itchy sensation all over the body.
-Permanent loss of bone mass, fractures and lifelong problems
-Anal and bladder incontinence, urinary tract infections, vaginal prolapse, and other problems related to weak and damaged pelvic floor muscles. Some may be related to chronic constipation, commonly found in people with anorexia nervosa. Structural damage and atrophy of pelvic floor muscles can be caused by low estrogen levens, excessive exercise, and inadequate nutrition. Surgery may be necessary to repair the damage.
And that's not including the emotional damage it can do!
TheHeadHonchoPoncho57 answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:22 am: Noooo, there's MUCH more harm than just puking. Thats not anorexia, your talking about bulimia. With eating disorders, you don't eat anything and your body doesn't get the proper amount nutrients. It ruins your hair and some people even lose their hair! Your menstrual cycle doesn't function very well because your body needs at LEAST 18% fat! Because of lack of food, your organs will bloat and you'll actually look bigger. Anorexia has killed many people. Remember Terry Schavo (assuming that you live in the United States) going into that vegetative state? She was anorexic before her medula shut down. Do NOT go anorexic, it can threaten your life. You NEED fat to stay healthy and even if you think you are overweight, you should ALWAYS consult a doctor before going on your own little thing.
Razhie answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:21 am: Well eventually you can die. Besides that, your body's immune system begins to break down, your teeth and gums lose thier protective barrier and your bones and muscles become weaker and weaker.
You will be sick more often, less able to normal things physical things like run or swim, your skin will loose its colour and mostuire, look pale and dry. Many women also loose thier ability to bear childern, those who are anerexic and do have children suffer from serious complications.
x_mystery answered Friday July 29 2005, 1:20 am: Bulimia is the eating disorder in which you binge and purge - meaning eat and then throw up. Anorexia is flat out starving yourself. It can in the end, kill you. If you don't get proper nutrition, your body starts eating its own insides (sounds nasty, but its true) and can shut down main organs. Do you remember the whole Terri Shiavo deal? The thing that turned her into a vegetable in the first place was because she had anorexia, and then she passed out because her body didn't have enough energy to run itself. Not enough oxygen got to her brain for over two minutes, and her quality of life went poof, that fast. There's endless horrible affects of both anorexia AND bulimia.
