Did you ever wake up and wonder when your life became a soap opera? A bizzare mixture between 'Dawson's Creek' and 'Days of our Lives'?

I know I've had that feeling - that it's just all too dramatic and ridiculous, and wouldn't it be nice to go and under a nicely-furnished rock for a while? So, whilst I do not promise or claim to be an expert on how teenage boys minds work or how you can uncode your best friend's baffling behaviour, I'll always attempt to empathise and offer some honest words of advice.

I am 21, with a fairly dysfunctional life as a artsy student type. I've recently graduated with a degree in Philosophy, and am spending time working in the law before returning to university for further study. I still don't know what I want to do with my life, but I like where I am at the moment. I like shoes, bad television, chocolate cheescake and pretty things.

I am very busy at the moment, attempting to fund my life as a postgraduate (that's grad school to the Americans). I do still stop by quite a lot to help out with the admin stuff, but my column is pretty lame and inactive. Boo-hiss. I will however still endeavour to answer any questions that are sent my way, so feel free to send questions to my inbox.

Frequently Asked Questions

Actually, I made them up. But they are questions that I've seen more than once around this site (and, indeed, in the real world), and so have created general responses to them, linked below. It's a little sparse at the moment, but I'll be adding to the list as I think of more questions (and, er, answers to them).

k, im 13 and I wanna wear thongs. lol, I know, weird, but newayz... i had one be4 that my cousin had got me and i had to throw it away after i wore it once cuz i didnt wanna get caught. I dont know how, because everytime it comes up, all my mom says is idk y u would purposly put your underwear up your butt. If you think about it, when you wear regular underwear, you pick it out. I think that thongs are really comfortable, how do i tell her I wanna wear em???

My mother doesn't 'understand' thongs either (she occasionally looks baffled when I'm going through the washing and says "I just don't see *how* they can be comfortable!"). She was a little bemused at first, but she, like your mother, will get used to it. As you've said, it's not about being sexual and showing it off, it's just about being comfortable and feeling comfortable knowing that you don't have a visible knicker line. If you explain that to her, I'm sure she'll be okay with you wearing them. If the idea of bringing up the topic yourself is too daunting, you could just buy a few plain ones yourself (nothing that's likely to scare her, such as something with a flirty message written accross it!) and if she asks, then explain as above why you want to wear them. Good luck!

okay, I am an advice columnist here and a lot of what I run into was this fake persona of enviromentalists and people concerned with hate in the world. Why is this instantly called a pot-smoking hippi? I do not understand why anyone could say that about people they have never met. This is really negative and completly unhelpful and also unrealistic considering that we are only a little way off from global warming and multiple lung problems do to our air quality. This has really been bugging me. I don't expect everyone to agree to want to change the world but why cant they atleast show respect for others concerns?

Stereotypes will probably always exist in some form of another, about all kinds of people and groups - think of the stereotypes associated with feminists, politicians, gay people, etc., to name but a few. All you can do is challenge those stereotypes by showing that a movement and/or idea is not defined by a caricature. The more that people like yourself show the world through actions and logical reasoning that environmentalism cannot be reduced (and dismissed as a result of) an image of a 'pot-smoking hippie', just as politics cannot be reduced to the image of a sleazy man in a suit, the less the stereotype will matter. The less you concentrate on images and stereotypes, the less your target audience will too. Good luck.

my mom has a deformed uterus. Less than like 3% of women in the US have it. I forget the exact name but its soo bad that her gyno. is surprised she had 2 kids. She had 13 misscarriages before she had me. Ne way my doctors seems to think this is genetic but we don't know for sure if its genetic in my family because all the females on my mom's side has had their female parts removed. My mom gets cysts on her overies too. When my mom told me this I was like I want to be checked. But she was like don't worry your 16. I don't want to have promblems having kids in 10 years so I want to be checked. Do you think I should get checked and if so can I go to the gyno. without her knowing??

That's a tough call. Gynocology exams generally aren't the most fun things in the world, as they are intrusive and that can be uncomfortable when you are young and/or not sexually experienced. I wouldn't rush into having one if there isn't an advantage in having one early. I do, however think there is an advantage to knowing for sure whether you have the condition or not - for both peace of mind and for future family planning. That doesn't mean you have to do it immediately, but at some point in the next few years it would be a good idea. I think going to the doctors alone is a bad idea, simply because finding out might be quite an emotional experience for you and it would be easier to do this with the support of somebody who has been through the same experience by your side. I would say then that it's best to talk to your mother about it - say you'd like to know for sure whether you are effected long before it might effect decesions (such as whether you want to try for a child), and that you'd like her support as you go through this. Hopefully she'll understand. Good luck!

ok my boyfriend really wants me to give him ahand job or blow job and i dont know how..:-/..plz tell me how cuz i really wana kno! pplzz

This is on the list of questions we delete (check out the FAQ) so I'm not going to approve it. I thought I'd throw in my two cents before I delete it though: do what comes naturally. You can google how to be a good lover to your hearts content, but it'll probably be more enjoyable for you both if your relaxed and not worrying about how to do it exactly how you read - go with the flow, ask him how he's enjoying it and you'll be fine. Good luck.

okay so recently ive been hanging out with some friends that i wouldnt normally hang out with them out of school or sports. They smoke pot and they talk about ti all the time. since ive been hanging out with them i have been wanting to smoke it but i know its not the right choice. What do you think i should do?

Please do not post questions twice. This slows down how quickly they will be approved, and is a bannable offense. I appreciate it may have been a mistake this time, so am letting it slide, but please read the FAQ and don't just repost if your question hasn't be approved immediately. Thank you.

My friend Harmony is always telling me that I need to let God into my life and look to him as a source of comfort. I believe that God exists, but I have doubts about whether he really cares or not. I feel like she trying to force me to believe like she does. I respect the fact that she is strong in her faith, but I don't neccesarily want to talk about it with her. She gets really offended when I say something that she doesn't think is right. When I told her that I didn't want her to tell me to go to God for guidance, she got angry and told me that at least she knew that she couldn't be open with me anymore. Am I wrong for asking her to not talk about this? How to I tell her that I would rather not talk about God without offending her?

It sounds like you have a very mature and sensible attitude. Faith is very personal, and you need to disccover and explore your relationship with God yourself. Questioning your faith and exploring your religious beliefs are good things. This may be tough to explain to your friend, but be firm with her the next time the topic arises: tell her that you respect her faith, but she needs to respect yours too, even if it is different. If she can't respect your beliefs, then perhaps you aren't destined to be friends. After you've had this discussion, then tell her (again, be firm) that seeing as talking about God seems to cause a lot of friction, perhaps you shouldn't talk about it. Good luck!

A while back, I used to use a lot of hairspray and gel on my hair and, when the stuff would drip onto my back, it would break out.

Since then, I've stopped using leave-in hair products altogether but my skin is still breaking out.

First of all, my back is awful. It's a lot clearer than it was a couple months ago but the acne never seems to completely go away.

The skin on my chest is also bad. I have little, red bumps all over and, although the pimples aren't that big, their very red. I can't wear any low-cut shirts because of this.

Also, I have a problem with the skin on my inner-thighs. It's not acne. In fact, I'm not entirely sure what it us. But I do know that I've have little, red bumps all over my thighs and they're EXTREMELY hard to get rid of.

Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of these pimples (and redness) on my back and chest fast?

And does anyone know what the bumps on my legs are and how to get rid of them?

Thanks in advance!

(Sorry if this is posted twice.. O.o It didn't show up the first time..)

Please read the site FAQ. Questions have to be approved by moderators before they show up on the main board (this is to prevent spam and obscene or inappropriate questions), so they will take some time to show up on the main page. Posting questions multiple times only slows down the process, and can get you banned. Please consider this a warning.

As for the skin problem... I'm afriad I can't help. I have bumps like the ones you describe on my legs too, but I don't think there's anything you can do other than exfoliate regularly.

My friend told me tht she caught her sister cutting....Can ne1 tell me wht tht is? I asked her wht it wuz and she looked @ me like I wuz crazii...Wht is it?! I need 2 no!!

It means your friend caught your sister deliberately cutting herself. Sometimes people who are very depressed find that the only way they can deal with their emotional pain is to find a physical outlet for it. Cutting their arms, wrists or other body parts is a way (although a very destructive way) that some people, such as your friend's sister, deal with their pain.

do people really like stick gerbils or animals in thier buttholes?

I'm deleting this for being indecent content as defined http://advicenators.com/faq.php?mode=qreject:

"Indecent Content
Like many other sites, we use the "Miller Test" for defining indecency. There are three guidelines used in this test:
The average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest; (meaning: the question isn't meant for an honest advice columnist just here for fun, it's meant for cruel people who don't take the site seriously and prefer indecent content)
the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexually explicit conduct; (pretty obvious)
a reasonable person must find the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. (meaning: the question doesn't contribute a darn thing to the site)."

well i had my period.. n they were like all the symptoms n everything so im sure i had it.. but ive missed my period date?? idk wats going on.. i tried to wait a few extra days but its been like 4-5 days n i sitll havent gotten it? its my 2nd time getting my period so i dunno is that normal? im not very close with my mom.. so i cant really talk to ehr about it.. i dunno what to do! helppp!! ((n i havent been having sex lol so it cant be that))

Your periods do not immediately settle into a 28 day cycle. If you've only had one period before your next one might not come for days, weeks or months after it's 'due'. That's completely normal. It'll take about a year to settle in to a really predictable cycle.

ok i just broke up with my boyfriend and i mean we havent been goin out too long wow like 10 days whoo hoo! well ne ways i got really annoyed cause he kept teling me he loves me but i know he doesnt (cause we r only 14 and dont know what love is... he also told all his ex's that he loved them... one of my best friends is his ex) ne ways... i always told him that i loved him so he didnt feel bad when i realli dont love him... he also kept bringing up some other hypethetical girl and it made em feel uncomfortable... well so i dumped him and i still wanna be friends with him but he wont talk to me... i feel realli bad he kinda made me feel reallyy bad... what should i do to not feel so bad? (check out my advice column im x27pixidust27x )

It's natural that he feels a bit hurt that you broke up with him, whether it was love or not. I think he probably just needs time to get over the embarssment of being broken up with before he can be friends with you again. Show him that you do want to be friends again (by being friendly when you greet him, etc) but don't push it and expect everything to be as it was immediately. Good luck!

i'm on my sister's advice name, but im a guy and i have really hairy arm pits. is it weird to um...shampoo it? does anyone else do this? thnx

I'm female, but I don't see anything wrong with that. In fact, it seems sensible if you have a lot of hair there. I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Has anybody heard of gender identity disorder? it's when you are born one gender but with the opposite gender's body? example, you can be a guy trapped in a girls body. I think I have a friend who has this. She's more than just a "tomboy." She dresses like a guy, acts like a guy, does manly things, talks manly, denies that she has or ever will get her period, and she duck tapes her boobs down. what do you think of this?

From what you have described, your friend sounds like she suffers from gender disphoria of some variety. There are many, many people who have feelings of gender disphoria. Your friend is by no means alone. She may well be confused about who she is inside, especially as she is growing through puperty. If she is transgendered, this will be an emotional and confusing time for her, as she is likely to feel even more alienated from her body. You don't want to pressure her to talk about this if she doesn't want to or isn't yet ready to, but you can show that you are open and ready to listen if she ever does want to talk about her gender and/or sexuality.

It's a tough topic to approach, and it might be better to wait until she brings it up with you. If you do want to talk about it, educating yourself beforehand is a great idea. There are many gender 'disorders', and there is a great deal of misunderstanding about transexualism. Showing sensitivy, understanding and knowledge when talking to your friend will make talking and coming to terms with her situation more easily. http://www.genderpsychology.org/ is a great site to start with. Good luck to both you and your friend.

ok I think I'm fat but no1 else does..are they lying to make me feel better or am I just not fat? I'm 4'8 and I weigh 76 pounds

From www.am-i-fat.com

If you are 4'8, your ideal weight is between 85 and 102 pounds. Far from being fat, you are actually underweight and could be endangering your health. It's worrying that you think you are fat when you are very far from being so - it sounds like you have some body image issues. In your case, it would be sensible to speak to a doctor or dietician, simply because being reassured about your weight and diet by a professional would probably be good for your esteem.

how do you kiss? i need help lol

every once in a while (but not too much) I go to some sort of fancy dinner and I always get so confused when the first course comes with my silverware. Which fork do I start with? Usually I just use what the person next to me uses, but what if they're waiting for me to use a fork first? it could become very very confusing.

If the table has been laid with several sets of crockery, you always use the set on the outside (e.g. the ones that are the furthest difference from your plate in the middle) first, and move inwards a set with each course you eat.

i have this one friend of mine who whenever other people are around, especially guys, she gets really obnoxious. She become loud and annoying trying to be the center of attention. She put on her annoying girly act, and its just frustrating because she never acts this way when its just me. How can i show her obnoxious she's being without her screaming at me?

If you think she's likely to overreact about you confronting her directly (e.g. "You know, you're really very different around guys") then you could try starting a conversation on the topic where she ends up talking about it and therefore thinking about it for herself. You could ask her what she thinks guys like in general, or what they like in her. If she says something about her bubbly, confident personality, you could then use this as a way in to discuss what annoys you about the way she behaves. Tell her you wonder if sometimes being loud is overwhelming for guys, and that your real personality is probably even more attractive. Hopefully this will make her think about her behaviour around guys without her feeling like she's being accused of something (which will make her defensive). Good luck!

ok Tori (my BF) has this friend (mike) who asked her out. Then mikes friend tyler likes me. so mike was like put your arm around amy and ask her out. now tyler is mad a mike for doing that and im mad a mike to. and tyler is ok but i dont like Him ALOT ALOT. i like him as a friend. Should i go out with him?

You've answered this one yourself: you like him as a friend. Unless you are sure you feel something more for him, there's no point going out with him and spoiling the friendship you have together. It sounds like you want to go out with this guy just because it would mean you and your friend both had boyfriends who were friends, which would mean you could all go out together and have fun. In reality though, this is a bad reason to choose to date somebody - if you don't like them that much the relationship will be doomed, and if you broke up with Tyler, things would be akward between you and Mike, which could easily spill over into things being akward between you and Tori. For now, just get to know him. If you later decide you like him, then ask him out, but don't if you aren't interested.
