I can't choose between Christianity, Buddhism or athiesm.

Question Posted Thursday December 23 2004, 4:22 pm

I guess the subject line says it all. I constantly flip-flop between Christianity, Atheism and Buddhism. I like a little of all, and I can't seem to choose one faith. I always change my mind. Is there something wrong with me? Am I flaky? It's just that a faith is an important choice, and I'm afraid to make the wrong one.
I like all three, but I know I have to pick one.
What should I do?

Okay im a very strong christian and i cant make your choice for you but ( oh yeah im 13 people sometimes like to know that ) Jesus Christ died for your sins on the cross and im sure you know that. And i dont exactly know about your other two choices but... theyre is a heaven and a hell and if you choose the wrong religion you could possibly go to hell. One of the 10 commandments is..

You Shall worship no other God but me.

so i just hope you make the right choice.. and as your sister in christ i lvoe you and Jesus does too

ill pray for you

I know how you feel. I am a Christian but I question my faith quite often. I guess you could say, if it weren't for my common sense, I'd be an athiest. I don't mean that offensively. It's just my reasoning. Think about the three and see what seems the most practical to you. Take Atheism for example: If there is no creator of any sort, how did the world get here? Evolution? When discussing evolution, ask "where did that come from?" enough and eventually you'll find that you are stuck. The most important advice I can give you is, The truth can not always be proven but it can never be disproven. So do your best to disprove all three of these religions and then make your choice.

Hi there. You are asking a very good question...

You are still in the process of deciding so that is why you are probably feeling 'flaky'. I think that when you find the 'religon' you want to follow that you will know in your heart it is and this feeling will go away. The only way though to find the 'religon' you want to follow is to find which one is the truth.

You are very smart to be afraid of picking the wrong one. Because there is only one way to heaven. This is what I believe.

Other people I know, would strongly disagree with this or maybe believe 'religon' is an irrelevant factor for them. Well if other people are right and I am wrong...so be it. I have still lost nothing and will still go to heaven. But if I am right and they are wrong...they are in trouble. Because we are talking about where you will be forever and ever and ever after you die.

All I can say is that if you come to know God/ become a Christian (all this means is asking him to forgive you for the wrong things you've done, believing that he died to save you from the wrong things you and everybody does and that he rose again...asking him to come into your heart...and telling him you want to live your life for him)once you do this i can assure you that you will have a feeling of peace and new found puropose in your life. Afterall...havent you ever wondered what the point of life is?

Buy the way...did you know that Christianity is the only religon that has a God who died for them and is still alive today?

There is nothing you can do to earn your way into heaven because God is soo perfect nothin anyone one could do would ever be good enough. All you have to do is turnaround from your ways, believe in God and go his way! You are saved by believing in GOD!

Well hope I've helped. Don't mean to sound too 'preachy' its just that I know THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT DECISON AND YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO GET IT WRONG!

well. best wishes

A group that might be able to help you are the Unitarian Universalists. They usually have a church or two in most cities, although they tend to have small congregations. They accept that there are many paths to the divine and that no one (including themselves) really has it all right. :) They attract people from many different backgrounds who are unhappy with the dogmatic approach of other churches.

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is a good place to start. :) The faq at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) might also be helpful to you.

As a side note, I'm generally pagany like, and not a UU. It just sounds like they might be helpful to you at this point in your journey. :)

No, you're not flaky. Searching and realizing the importance of a faith decision is a good start. The fact that you are always changing your mind tells me there is internal battling going on. I suggest you pick up the Holy Bible (the Word of God that Christianity is based on) and seek the truth. Pray to the God of the Bible to meet you where you are and show you truth. If you are seeking truth, desiring to be free and want real answers; real peace, the Bible is where you will find it. The process may not necessarily feel good, but you will find it. Jesus Christ is the answer. He's alive, He's real, and He's waiting for you to say yes to Him.

If you cannot find ideals in each organized religion that really spark your intrest, it may not be for you. Don't partake in something you don't like wholeheartedly. Maybe you could have your own personal faith in which you don't choose to worship one God, you worship nature, or love. Not nessicarily Wiccan, but come to your own conclusions. No one needs a specific church to give them answers.

(p.s. steer clear of christianity.)

No I think at our age we are all a little bit unsure i was confused one why do we have to confess our sins to the priest and why not do them in our prayers. So I went and talked to the priest about it. That could help you if you went and talked to one about your problems. Yeah they are alot holyier but the understand where we are coming because we are young and dont know to much and we are exploring and trying to see where we fall in. But i cant pick for you its what you think is right. Happy Holidays!! Trix

Did you mean to say agnostic??? How can you even ponder about being Christian or Buddist and then plug in the word atheist? It's okay to take bits and pieces from different religions you like without being dedicated to one faith. Have faith in yourself. Your body is your temple. Be your own god.

ivegotasecret answered Thursday December 23 2004, 11:22 pm:
You should probably disregard the Christians advocating Christianity. It's their religion, of course they're going to advocate it. Nothing against them. I'd do it too. Just please notice that a lot of their arguments for being Christian only hold true if you already believe in Christianity.

I personally am agnostic.

I don't see why you have to choose. If you like some ideas from Christianity and you also like some from Buddhism, combine the two to create your own religion. I'm not entirely sure how you would incorporate atheism into that. Wait, maybe you could say that there is a heaven but there is no God, and then add something from Buddhism into the mix (I don't know any Buddhist beliefs).

Also, I know some Buddhists, and if they were here they'd tell you the same thing I'm going to tell you: Buddhism is not a religion. I don't really understand it myself, but it isn't.

Good luck!

Okay, you need to follow your heart. You might like all of them, but you need to really go with the one you can see yourself celebrating the most. It's normal to flip-flop. Eventually you'll decide something. Religion is a constant thing throughout all of our lives. However, I disagree with just about everyone who posted here. Choosing one religion and sticking with it is important. If you're a Christian, you are NOT a Buddhist. You can believe in some of the zen qualities and ideals from Buddhism, but you can not take their gods. You'd be contradicting your Christian believes. I don't even know how you'd be a Christian Atheist or a Buddhist Atheist. That's like an awesome oxymoron. If you follow your heart, you're making the right decision. You just need to take some time and meditate over it. Something's sure to come to you. Good luck!

I honestly don't think you have to pick one religion/faith. I'm supposedly jewish, but I believe in reincarnation, and am a little agnostic. I mean, faith is an important choice, true, but I say if you can't pick one faith, make your own. Decide what you believe and stick with it. Or don't. I think whatever being is up there will understand if you make your own beleive system. Humans were created with free will, and free will includes choice. I don't believe you can make a wrong choice as far as faith goes. Faith is faith - a bunch of beliefs and stuff like that. Just decide what you believe and go from there. I hope this helps!

FunnyCide answered Thursday December 23 2004, 4:52 pm:
you should go with Christianity. none of the "gods" of the other religions (i.e. buddhism's god) died for you. and if you were an athiest, you would have no God. what would you do if you had a serious descision to make? who would you pray to? yourself? that wouldnt work. or what if you had a family or friend die? who would you turn to for divine help? yourself? that wouldnt work. Christianity follows Christ. Christ died for you. he died the most painful death ever to be experienced by anyone - ever. why? because he loves you. if he didnt love you, why did he get mocked, beaten by guards, whipped 39 times, wear a painful crown of thorns, be NAILED to a cross - naked, and hang there? let me tell you, its not because he wanted to see what it fealt like!! Christ loves you enough that he would do that all over again for you alone. if everyone but you died, he would still go through that again. you cant say that about buddhism, now can you? we know that we are not worthy of His love, no one is. we have all sined. the wages of sin is death. but God is giving you the free gift of eternal life through Jesus. why dont you accept it? it costs nothing, you have nothing to fear. you will spend eternity with Christ! if you have any more questions about this, please ask me! i will answer them, dont hesitate. i will even be on over the holidays. Christ loves you!
I am praying for you

Why do you have to pick one?

It's the ideals of the religions that count, not the details of the scripture. You can follow the moral and afterlife ideals you like from each of them, take aspects of many other religions and mix and match... find a personal belief system that fits you best, instead of be locked into one.
