I've been known lose my temper easily, usually with me ending up slapping someone in the face. Usually it only happens once a week where I'll just get really angry over something stupid that wouldn’t have mattered the day before. I take my anger out on guys usually (I'm a girl) I'm wondering if I have bi polar (sp?) since I can be totally fine one second and out of control the nest. My mom thinks I need a consular since she thinks I'm "Angry all the time" and "Depressed" but I’m not sure what to think. Any ideas? Btw, I’m 14 (link)

What you've described doesn't sound like bipolar to me, but I'm not a mental health professional.
And neither is anyone else here. It DOES sound like you have a problem with control, though, and you're clearly unhappy, so your mother is right. You (or she) should talk to your doctor about getting a referral for a professional evaluation. No matter what the results are, it should be very helpful to you.
You're young. Believe me, this is the time to deal with whatever issue(s) you might have. Otherwise, you might find yourself at 50 wondering how you screwed up your whole life!

hi everyone, i am a 13 year old female, and although i am an advice columnist myself, i cant seem to find a way around my problem...please gove me any help you can...
ok well here it all is, ever since i was young i have been scared of the dark, like i see shadows, hear noises...the usual. and when i was about seven, i saw this movie, something about a leperchaun, and it scared the shit outta me, like whenever i had to go to the bathroom, i would be on the toilet(sorry for the prude language, hahah) and i would just imagine there would be this like killer leperchaun behind the shower cutain. and that STILL kind of scares me. and another thing, when i am watching television, or am on the comupter, i always think there is someone/something behind me, that is going to hurt me. now, i want to be an independent person, i really do, but unless there are lots of people around, i cant really live, because im so scared. like at night when everyone goes to bed, and i am downstairs, i freak myself out wondering if my mom locked the door, and if there is someone in the living room, so i bolt...and i mean BOLT upstairs and run into my room (which i share with my sister, otherwise i'd still be scared) so what i'm wondering is...how do i get over my fears? will i grow out of all this eventually? how do i become more indepentent?
please!please!please!please! HELP ME! anyone and everyone. i dont trust anyone i know enough to talk to them about this! (link)
|
You'll probably grow out of it, if that's any comfort.
I had a similar problem, but I managed to get over it at an earlier age. Basically, I decided that since I KNEW that the things that I was scared of were imaginary, I could make an imaginary barrier to stop them. So I started by imagining a circle around my house, and deciding that nothing scary could get inside that circle.
It wasn't foolproof; I did have a nightmare once in a while. But even in my dreams, I remembered that barrier. And it helped.
Later, I expanded the barrier to protect my entire town. Soon after that, I made it cover the whole state. I visualized imaginary monsters being pushed backwards into the ocean and far away. The barrier extended in every direction, so they couldn't fly over it or tunnel under it. Eventually, the barrier expanded to cover the entire planet.
And after that, I stopped worrying completely.
If that technique doesn't work for you (or even if it does), it could also help if you were to practice relaxation breathing techniques. They're really easy to do, and can REALLY help you deal with fear.
Start by taking a long, slow breath all the way into your stomach - don't use your chest muscles, breathe down into your belly. Take the breath, and then let it flow out of you, relaxing as much as you can. Do that two more times. That alone should relax you a lot.
Here's some more info:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/academic/counseling/breathe.asp
Lastly...if none of that helps, you may want to talk to your doctor about this issue. She or he may be able to suggest something, or recommend that you talk to a specialist. There's no reason to live in fear, so please don't let that happen.
Oh yeah - I'd recommend avoiding scary movies from now on. And don't drink anything with caffeine in it.
Good luck!

i am working on an essay and i want to know how good/bad my thesis statement is or how i can make it better.
this is it :
river valleys and mountains had positive impacts on regions by improving cultural diffusion with trade and preserving cultural diversity with natural barriers, they had negative impacts with no natural barriers to protect them from invasion and less food from farming. (link)
|
Frankly, it would make more sense to talk about the impact of river valleys and mountains on human society, rather than on "regions". That's really what you're saying, anyway.
Your thesis statement as it stands is a comma splice, by the way. Your teacher will mark you down for that.
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_sentpr.html
You might want to consider finding a way to distill the concept down still further. Something like "Throughout history, river valleys and mountains have had a major impact on human society in both positive and negative ways" would work. Although please make up your own, since you really should do your own essays. And frankly, your teacher will probably be able to tell that you didn't write the sentence I just gave to you.
Alternatively, you could break your thesis statement up into more than one sentence (unless your teacher will mark you down for that, of course).
Also, "negative impacts with no natural barriers" doesn't really make sense. Say it out loud to yourself, or to a friend, and see what it sounds like. That's the best way to test a written phrase - by saying it aloud.

Sandisk makes some excellent MP3 players. I have one, and I like it a lot. The price is good, too.
I know that Circuit City carries them. And you could order them from their website.

Hey all. I was wondering if you guys thought I made a smart choice. Here it is: for freshman year, I am not continuing Spanish and going to Spanish 2 Honors, but instead I'm taking Italian 1 because I think it's different and a beutiful language. Please tell me if you think I made a smart choice. Thanks! (link)
|
If you like Italian, you'll do better at learning it. You made the right choice.
Italian will also be VERY useful if you decide to study Latin, which is itself a very useful language to know. Among other things, it expands your English vocabulary incredibly, and it helps you with most other European languages as well.

Can anybody pleasssse help me on my essay on people who have been assassinated? PLEASEEE..I've tried google..yes, I have and I've gathered a lot of information..but more information is helpful. :)
How was Abraham Lincoln assassinated?..Why? I mean, what did he do to make John W. Booth kill him? What was the result of that?
Francis Ferdinand--he was the archduke of Austria--he was killed by The Black Hand..I think err Gavrilo Princip. What was the goal of the assassinators?
Last of all, Anwar Sadat..What was the goal of his assassination and what was the end result?
Thanks sooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I promise I'll rate. ;)

I gave you the answers in chat, but you left before I could finish:
You need to learn how to research. Google and wikipedia HAVE the info, but you have to know how to ask correctly.
If you learn where to look and how to phrase your searches, you'll be set for life. Spend a little time, read the FAQs, look around online and in your library. All of the information is there; you just need to know how to look.
If you take the time to learn how to research, I'll have helped you. If you don't, then I haven't helped you at all. Because the next time you have a problem, you'll be stuck all over again.
Learn how to get the knowledge for yourself, and you'll never have to ask anyone for help again.
Good luck.

Ok. I can't download anything, listen to any music, watch any videos, and play any games. All I got left is comics on the internet and I have gotten bored with those. (link)

There are lots of old - but great! - stories online.
Here are some classic mystery/detective stories:
http://www.futrelle.com/
I recommend starting with "The Problem of Cell 13"
Or try these stories by H.G. Wells:
http://www.online-literature.com/wellshg/
Just scroll down to the "Short Stories" section in the left-hand sidebar. "The Truth about Pyecraft" is a great one to start with. Some of the other ones are a bit gruesome - "The Cone", or "The Lord of the Dynamos" - but they're all great.
And if you find that you like Wells, there are lots of other stories by him online; just Google for them.

who sings it and what this song called?
it goes someting like...
"when im down i want you about me"
"when im forgotten i want you to love me"
"when i think about you i touch myself"
THANKS IN ADVANCE. (link)

"I Touch Myself" was originally by the Divynals. They recorded it in 1991. Someone called "Lenny B." covered it in 2005.
Here's a good source for music information:

I love books! I love to read, I'm 15, so I need some more good book suggestions. I like to sci-fi and fantasy books, and I love Nicholas Sparks. So, anyone got any good suggestions? 5's for good suggestions. (link)
|
I've been a guest speaker on the subject of SF genre literature at a large local convention for more then ten years running, and my personal collection is well over 10,000 books, so this is a VERY partial list. You can write and ask me for more suggestions any time.
SF/fantasy (many of these are classics):
- The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
- Lord of Light, Roger Zelazny
- The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
- The Bridge of Birds, Barry Hughart
- The Foundation series (just the first three books), Isaac Asimov
- The Instrumentality of Mankind (short story collection), Cordwainer Smith
- Norstrila, Cordwainer Smith
- Ringworld, Larry Niven
- The City and the Stars, Arthur C. Clarke
- Starship Troopers, Robert A. Heinlein
- The Amber series, Roger Zelazny
- Cities in Flight, James Blish
- The Devil's Day, James Blish
- Dune, Frank Herbert (the other Dune books are good, although all of them are terribly complicated. Avoid ANYTHING written by his son, Brian Herbet - he's done some "Dune" books, and they're beyond bad)
- anything by Fredric Brown
- The Vlad Talos series by Steven Brust (but make sure to read them in order)
- Lord Valentine's Castle, Robert Silverberg
- The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, volume 1 (probably the best collection of classic short stories available)
- The Dorsai series, Gordon R. Dickson
- The Dragon and the George, Gordon R. Dickson
- The Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat, Harry Harrison
- Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers, Harry Harrison
- Time and Again, Jack Finney
- The God Box, Barry Longyear
- Superstoe, William Borden
I also quite like almost anything by Lawrence Watt-Evans, Robert Sheckley (particularly his short stories), Ron Goulart, David Brin, Lyndon Hardy, Anthony Boucher, Michael Moorcock, James White, and Lord Dunsany.
Some non-genre books you might enjoy (I do):
Kim, Ridyard Kipling
Shogun, James Clavell
A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
I, Claudius, Robert Graves
The Catcher In the Rye, J.D. Salinger
Almost anything by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (you might want to start with "Welcome to the Monkey House")
I know as soon as I'm done with this I'm going to think of 20 other books and authors I should have included, and I'm going to kick myself. :D

Well yesterday I took a 2 hour nap and then a couple hours layter I wanted to go to bed I couldnt sleep, I finally got to sleep at like 2 am then today I had cramps really bad I mean like wear I wanted to leave school bad they were horrible. && I dont know if it is like a part of my period or what because I mean I feel really shitty and everything and I dunno I am going to go to the nurse next period. This is really odd. Please help. All 5`s

SweetxxIntoxication gave you good advice. I might add that when you feel generally horrible and everything hurts more than normal, it can be a sign that you're catching the flu. So seeing the nurse is definitely a good idea.
If you still feel terrible tomorrow, you should probably see your doctor. Good luck!

Ok so I answered this question about Sporks and somehow it ended up becoming an answer to a question about horses! what the hell?
How and why did this happen? Am I the only person this is happening to? (link)

I think I may have social anxiety(sp). Whenever my friends do something without me I start to think they don't like me and and start to get very depressed. I've been depressed a lot lately for different reasons also but I was thinking I may have social anxiety. I'm starting to feel separated from my friends and that I only have one tru friend. I'm also getting depressed more easily. The slightest thing makes me force back tears. Does anyone have an idea as to what this might be? Thank you. (link)
|
If your feelings are bothering you enough that you felt you should ask here, then they're serious enough for you to talk to someone who's actually able to *diagnose* social anxiety or depression.
And it certainly sounds as if SOMETHING is going on; you shouldn't have to spend your days fighting back tears.
Talk to your doctor about getting a referral to a behavioral health specialist. They'll be able to evaluate you; even if they say that nothing is really wrong, at least you won't have to worry any more.
And if you DO have social anxiety or depression, getting them diagnosed is the first step to getting better.
Good luck!

We live on a farm in rural Minnesota. We are a 3/4 mile from the county road. We live on a dead end road. There is a zero crime rate in this area. My husband insists on keeping our doors locked at all times. I hate this and feel I am being locked in as there is no way in the world that anyone ever comes to our farm. To me, this is abuse. What do you think? I also say that it is cruel to lock me in when I have arthritic hands and opening the locks could be a problem, especially if there was a fire. (link)
|
YoungGrandma beat me to it. She's so good. :)
But maybe I can add a little.
At first as I was reading your question it seemed to me that your husband's behavior was odd, and a bit inconsiderate, but probably not abuse.
I had to re-evaluate when you mentioned arthritis.
First, a practical solution: There ARE products designed specifically for people with arthritis. You can find them via Google:
This site in particular has photos of some useful-looking products: http://www.elderweb.com/?PageID=3074
But that's just half of the problem - and the lesser half, to be honest. The other half is that you don't fully trust your husband any more, and he either doesn't trust you or - at the least - isn't being considerate of your feelings.
For THAT problem, no product is available. All I can do is recommend couples counseling, although I realize that it may be a bit difficult to find in rural Minnesota. Still, there's clearly a gap between the two of you that could threaten your marriage. A counselor should be able to help.
If that's simply impossible, at least try having a serious talk with your husband - and a serious *listen*, too. See if you can both find a way to really communicate. Because when a couple loses trust in each other and stops communicating, that can be fatal to their relationship.
And it doesn't get better by itself. You need an outside viewpoint, or at the very least you both need to put in some hard work on your marriage yourselves.
I wish you the best of luck, and no fires or burglars!

I've just started to make love with my boyfriend, and I have a vague recollection from my sex education classes at school that when you become sexually active you should have a check-up, examination etc. Is this the case? Thanks! (link)
|
First, make an appointment to see your OB/GYN (or regular doctor, if you don't have an OB/GYN - but you REALLY should have one). Do it before making love to your boyfriend again.
You need to know your options for birth control and (possibly) disease prevention, and your OB/GYN can provide all the information you need - plus, of course, the birth control itself.
Otherwise you're at serious risk for an unplanned pregnancy. Don't wait.

I would like to get a nice stomach. Not asking for rock hard abs but something impressive. The thing is i need at home ideas. I dont have access to equipment. Also i have a slight heart problem so runnings kinda hard on me but i can still do it. Any ideas? (link)
|
Step one, absolutely, is a serious talk with your doctor.
NEVER mess around with a heart condition. Not even a mild one.
That said, your doctor should be able to recommend a program of exercise and nutrition that should help you get into shape. And just so you know, although sit-ups and crunches will develop your abdominal muscles, your overall shape is really determined by your general body fat; there are no exercises which will eliminate fat only in one part of your body. So you'll have to get all of you in shape in order to have a nice stomach.
Membership in a gym isn't necessary in order to get in shape; you can get great results with brisk half-hour walks and ten-pound hand weights (or five pound weights, depending on how strong you are). And of course there's all sorts of great information about nutrition online. The US government's Food Pyramid is a good place to start: http://www.mypyramid.gov/
But please speak to your doctor first.
Good luck!

Where can I put my poems so that they won't be stolen? Like, I need an easy to use place and it has to be free. (link)
|
Whenever you write ANYTHING it is, by default, copyrighted.
But so are all songs, and we all know how easy THOSE are to steal. On the plus side, people are probably less likely to steal your poem then a top-40 song. :D
There are a few things you can do to increase your protection:
1. You can put an actual copyright statement on the poem, or the page that it's on. Do this by writing "Copyright (year) (your name)".
So if I wanted to put a copyright statement on this post, I'd put:
Copyright 2006 TheOldOne
Of course, you should use your real name. And the statement MUST be clearly visible.
Instead of "Copyright", you can use the copyright symbol, which is a "c" in a circle. That's available in most fonts. However, please note that putting a "c" in parentheses like this (c) is NOT the same thing, and is NOT a valid copyright statement!
If you're really feeling paranoid, you can actually register your poem with the US copyright office: http://www.copyright.gov/
That costs $30 per item you copyright. But please note that the ONLY thing you get from that is a better case if you take a copyright infringer to court. Legally, your work is automatically copyrighted to you as soon as you create it, and you don't need to register it to protect yourself.
You could also take a technical approach to protect your work, of course. For example, put it into Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or higher with maximum security settings. Those security settings are very hard to beat; I know, because I've tried.
If you don't have Acrobat, you could use Adobe's online conversion service (a free trial is available): http://createpdf.adobe.com/
Alternatively, you could turn the poem into a graphic and post it that way.
Search engines can't capture text from a graphic, and people wouldn't be able to copy & paste it except in the form of the original graphic.
But in the end, if you want people to be able to READ your poem there will *always* be a way for someone to steal it. There's no way to stop someone from reading it and then writing their own copy by hand, for example.
You could, of course, put it on a blog and make it friends-only; that way only a small circle of friends could read it, and with any luck they'd be people that you could trust. On the down side, that would limit your potential audience.
I don't think there's a lot of poetry-stealing going on these days, so the whole issue might not be worth worrying about anyway.
Good luck!

i think i have spyware on my comouter because my computer has been so slow lately and it freezes alot. i deleted internet explorer because i dont use that and iuse mozilla but even though i use ad-aware, it doesnt work that much.. does any one know any GOOD programs that work very well and is free? or anything i could do ? thanks (link)
|
First, download and install these programs (they're all free).
The latest version of Ad-aware from Lavasoft - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot-Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
And if you don't have an antivirus program that is being updated DAILY, you might want to uninstall your old antivirus program (assuming you have one) and install AntiVir - http://www.free-av.com/
Once you've installed those programs, update each one of them immediately - they make it pretty easy and obvious. You need to get them *fully* up to date. Then run a full system scan with each program, starting with your antivirus (or AntiVir). Oh, you won't be able to scan with SpywareBlaster; it doesn't have a scan option, it just blocks spyware.
This should clean everything up. I've yet to see this combination of software fail to clean and protect a system.
Additional steps: you need to update Windows. This whole problem probably happened because you're using an out-of-date version. So update it like this:
1. You must be connected to the internet.
2. Click on "Start".
3. Assuming that you have Windows XP, click on "Help and Support".
4. Under "Pick A Task", click on "Windows Update".
If you don't have XP, try Start > Help and search for "Windows Update".
You can protect yourself in the future by being extra careful when you're online. NEVER open an email attachment unless you not only know who it's from, but are EXPECTING it. Be very careful when visiting lyric or porn sites - those are the most likely to infect your system.
Make sure to keep all of your protective software updated at *least* weekly, if not twice a week. And scan every time you update, and after every download.
PS - since your question was titled "Popups", you might also want to install the Google toolbar for your Mozilla/Firefox. Apart from being very useful, it's also an excellent popup blocker; not perfect, but nothing ever is.
You can get it here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=33
Good luck!

http://webhome.idirect.com/~donlong/monsters/monsters.htm
Here is a list of creatures. I was wondering if I could use these? Have people copywrited these creatures? Are these fictional creatures known or made up by the creator? (link)
|
I gave the list a quick look-over, and I didn't see any non-mythological creatures (and I have some experience in this area).
So yes, you can use them, and no, they're not copyrighted. I specifically checked for some popular creatures that I know ARE copyrighted (such as Cthulhu), and they weren't included on the site, so it looks pretty clean.
Since these creatures are all mythological, their creators are unknown - the myths on which they're based go back thousands of years.
