Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. ok i am 13 female and i haven't gotten my period yet! i was wondering if masturbating has something to do with it? because i masturbate about 4 times a month its just that i am scared because i havent goten my period at all yet. please help me if you can.

I didn't get my period until a few months after I turned 14, and I don't masturbate, so yeah, masturbating has nothing to do with it.
I know someone whos in my biology class thats a junior (maybe senior I don't remember) and she still hasn't gotten hers. By that point I would see a doctor, but unless you're 16 and periodless, don't worry about it. It isn't something you want anyway.

I was wondering if you call someone on the phone it rings once and you hang up with no one picking up will you get charged? Your answer will help me soo much :)

If you're talking about your cell phone, you call, and then you hang up BEFORE getting connected, as in before them answering or before voicemail comes, then you usually aren't charged because you haven't connected. Then again, my cell phone plan is cingular, so if yours is different then I honestly don't know.

Will braces go off on metal detectors? What colors should I get? I'm getting them tommorow! (13/F Kind Of Preppy)

Well, they don't go off in metal detectors. The only reason I know that is because I go to practically all the football games, and because they're high school games, there are metal detectors, and my braces have never gone off.

DON'T GET YELLOW!! Haha, thats about the best I can do. My braces don't have rubberbands, so I can't get colored ones, but yellow is horrid on braces because it makes your teeth look yellow. Blues usually look pretty good on braces. So do purple and pinks!!

Okay so I saw a similar question about Retro day. Well my question is about Tacky day. Could someone tell me what would be classified as "Tacky" i've heard mixing gold and silver jewlery is tacky but thats it! Can anyone help?

A lot of people consider tacky day to be "wear as much as you can possibly put on" but NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! That is NOT TACKY!! Well, it's kinda tacky, more like "this looks horrid, never wear it again". Tacky is wearing horizontal stripes with verticle stripes. Tacky is stripes with polka dots, tacky is what our parents wear! hahaha.
I hope this gives you a better idea of tacky day! I can't wait for my school to start up with character week, or gee, I forgot what it was called, but it was loads of fun last year, especially boy girl switch. There were a few guys who, if it wasn't for their short hair, really looked like girls haha.

O.k. Heres my problem. i don't know if you straighten your hair but i do everyday. But i have my fried hair and chemical gunk build up on it. How do i clean the straightener itself? HLP!!!

Sorry, I don't straighten my hair, well I have every once in a while, but not enough to know how to clean a straightener. That's something you should ask a salon or something. I bet if you checked out one of my favorite columnists, one of the girls on the list would have an idea. As for you hair being fried, I'm not sure of the name, but there's a type of hair care product that could help you out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't know enough about hair straighteners to answer this.

I'm not allowed to hang out with my Best friend 'Michelle' because we had a little fight and she left a baad message on my answering machine; not my cell my house and my mom heard it. This was like June of last year I mean all summer I snuck over her house and met her places and now we're partners for a Social Studies project and I can't tell my mom I'm going to her house. Without her I have no friends and she asked me to sleepover her house. I said no but if I keep avoiding that situation she might no be my friend anymore. What can I do I really want to chill with her and how can I explain that to my mom?

June of last year, or this past June. If it was of last year, it's been over a year, people can mature a whole lot in that amount of time. I matured in the first month or two that I was on this site. Anyway, your best bet is to stop sneaking out, and to talk to your mom. Start out telling your mom that you and 'Michelle' were assigned partners in social studies, and that you need to work on a project together, and the she offered for you to spend the night. Tell her that you've worked out your differences and that the two of you are becoming friends again, and ask your mom if it's all right with her.
The worst thing you can do is sneak around, your mom WILL catch you, WILL find out, and WILL get mad, and most likely WILL ground you, stop you from seeing that friend, and/or Dangit! I lost my train of thought, but it was a good one.

But I've done plenty of lying in my day, to my parents, siblings, teachers, friends... Let me tell you, it's not something you should be doing. I've only been caught in a lie once, maybe twice, it's not a nice thing, I've been working on that quality about myself. But anyway, you REALLY need to talk to your mom about it. You won't get anywhere sneaking around!!

I plan on becoming sexually active soon. I am currently on birth control and we plan to use that AND a condom as protection. I was wondering if anyone knew the percentage of the effectiveness if both protection methods are used together? I know the chance of getting pregnant is really slim, but if anyone knows the actual percentages for the typical use of them (not totally perfect use), then I'd appreciate it. Thanks a bunch.

If you take them correctly and together they can be anywhere from 97%-99% effectice, so you would have pretty good chances.
I know concom brands that are good are Trojans. I'm not sexually active so I can't give you any personal experience kind of advice, but I can give you what I learned.
Spermicide is like a small percentege of effectiveness alone, but if used with a condom it races the percentage of both, so hey, all I can say is the more birth control, the better. Well like don't go overboard, but I think spermicide on a condom would work. Especially if you're on the pill too.

I would say use the day after pill afterwords, but I'm not sure what kind of pills you can take with the birth control you're alerady on.

ok i have been having my period for a few years now and i never ever used a tampon i have tried and they wont go up.....maybe im not inserting them in the right place and pleas dont tell me to finger my self please help fast

Well most boxes have directions, but if that still doesn't help maybe it just won't work. Not everyone is meant to wear a tampon. Somone I know wasn't able to wear one for like 3 years, she always tried but just never could get it to work, either out of fear or just she couldn't (which is possible) maybe you're too tense trying to put it in, so your muscles come together, or somethign along those lines. Try to relax and slowly insert it in. Maybe even use a lubricant.....

well im a fresman in high school and i still haven't gotten mi period! ( i no pretty sad huh?) well anyways im afraid ill get it in school and ill be wearing white pants... what can i do? i don't want any surprsies

Okay well not having your period and being a freshman isn't bad. I didn't get mine until spring break '05, I'm a sophmore, though it happened when I was a freshy.

Anyway, when you wear white pants, keep a pad/tampon, or 2 or 3, with you at school. Maybe if there's room bring an extra pair of pants, and always have something you can tie around your waist.

Any other day wear a pantyliner. I had a pantyline on when I first got my period, luckily it was light and didn't leak through, but ya never know.

From now on, keep at least one pad/tampon in your bookbag, and if you ever have a problem then use what you brought, and go to the nurse.

Don't worry about it, I didn't start my period until I was 14, actually I started in March. You honestly don't want to start it just yet, it is sooo not fun! My period had been funny so this past week my mom took me to the doctors, so I was asking her questions, and my doctor said unless you're 16 and you haven't had it, then you're fine. So it's all good for now. I have friends who didn't start until they were 16 and 17, but at that time you should really see a doctor. You still have about 2 and a half years before you should start to worry.

It happens about a day or so before, and sometimes throughout your period. It's when your emotions kind of run wild I guess you could say. They're probably just joking with you, not being serious, just their way of saying you're in a bad mood.

Well first off, when you're featured it's usually only for a day, though sometimes it can be two, unless DN has changed something.

Also, all of the previous times I've been featured I didn't get an e-mail, it's just lucky for me I'm on this site almost everyday so I can check out the featured columnits.
So you might want to drop by around once a day, maybe once every other day. But if you're featured, you'll probably get a question or 2 more than usual in your inbox, so that might help ya figure it out.

I like Arid Extra dry. I've also used dove, which is all right, but I like Arid extra dry much better. If you still have a problem, then talk you your doctor.
