Question Posted Sunday September 11 2005, 11:50 pm

Could someone tell me what standard/general form and point-slope form are? And what the formulas for them are?

Thanks!

Additional info, added Monday September 12 2005, 12:20 am:
EXAMPLE:

I'm supposed to change "The line through (1,4) and (3,6)." into each of the following equations: slope-intercept form, standard/general form, and point-slope form. In slope-intercept form, the line through (1,4) and (3,6) is y=1x+3 because the equation for slope-intercept is y=mx+b. But I don't know how to change "the line through (1,4) and (3,6) into the other two forms.

standard is
ax+by=c <-- x can't be negative and no fractions allowed.
Point slope is y-y1=m(x-x1) y1 and x1 is where you put the y and the x, and m is where you put the slow after solving for it.

slope intercept is y=mx+b, but I'm guessing you knew that?

okay well to find the slope of 2 points you do
y-y
___
x-x If you use 6-4 on top, then use 3-1 on bottom, and divide, that is your slope (slope is 1)

Then you plug in whichever of the 2 ordered pairs into point slope form (it'll give you the same answer) and you solve

Here I'll do this one for you, but I'm going to explain what I do so I hope you're not looking for an answer and you seriously want to know how to do it!!!!

y-y1=m(x-x1)
y-4=1(x-1)
Then solve by distributing
y-4=x-1
Then add the four to both sides
y=x+3... well now it's in slope intercept, but to get it to standard you can do it one of 2 ways, the easier would be to...
-3=x-y

I just switched the position and signs of 3 and y, because you can't have a negative x, so it made it easier on me.

Really instead of subtracting X and dividing everything by -1, I just switched y and the number and changed the signs which would be like subtracting them from each side.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, and I know this is like a week after you've asked, but I was just going through school questions because I haven't updated my column in a while and they're the easiest for me! Sorry if it's too late, but I hope I made you understand better.

We learned songs to remember the formulas, but it's hard to teach a song over the internet. Anyway I have a doctors appt. I need to get ready for, so bye now!

I think you should ask your teacher when you have problems like this one. If your teacher is a bitch, well, that's something you need to get over.

MFS answered Monday September 12 2005, 12:06 am:
slope is change in y divided by change in x

thus m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

point-slope? as in y = mx + b? where m = slope and b = intercept?
