About MaxwellsSilverHammer

I am a 20 year urban planning student from New York. I go to school, and work, way too much.

I'm a level II mod on this site, so if you have questions regarding the site I could be of good help.

As for my crappy advice: it is crappy. If you listen to anything I suggest you will most probably find yourself running through town naked, or something equally hilarious, because I am a sadist.

And of course, I will hit you with my guitar, and then steal all of your intelligence for my own personal stash.

(My avatar, that is just above, was made by Draak, it is Thor's Hammer, or Mjolner.)

P.S.: Storageanddisposal is actually 12, and Fern sucks.

Last year I took Algebra 1, and I sucked at it, but it wasn't me, it was the teacher. At the end of the year she ended up passing everyone in my class by one or two points, probably to make herself look good, because we were all failing miserable. Point is, I'm still moving onto Geometry next year..but I know absolutely nothing about Algebra 1, I didn't get anything out of that class. My mom will be getting me a tutor outside of school & I have notes on Algebra 1 now. But my question is, is Geometry harder than Algebra 1? Or is it similar? Does it deal with Algebra 1 alot/at all? Thank you.

High school geometry doesn't really require you to have any algebra skills. You'll probably only do proofs, logic, and conic sections. The only knowledge of algebra you will need for that is how to solve quadratic equations (for conic sections).

What are the scorings for the sats?
Like what score is average, or advanced or something? [I'm in 8th grade...] I was just wondering!
-Jess

First of all I'd just like to say that the 8th grade is WAY too early to be worrying about the SAT. I've seen kids who think that starting early is a good idea, but all it does it turn them into nervous wrecks. But I'll answer your question anyway.

As a warning, you're not going to be able to follow what I'm about to say, because it's based on statistics (which I assume you have not learned). The important part starts after the sentence "So, since every standard deviation is roughly equal..."

So, here we go:

According to collegeboard.com, the average scores for the class of 2005 were:

Critical reading: 508
Math: 520

CollegeBoard also says that, generally speaking, only those in the a perfect score in a section is the 99th percentile for that section.

So, using the normal distribution curve found in statistics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Standard_deviation_diagram.png), you can draw these rough statistics:

2.5 standard deviations away from the mean takes you to the 98.75 percentile, which is close enough to 99th percentile, or a perfect score.

The differences between a perfect score and the mean scores for math and reading are:

800 - 508 = 292
800 - 520 = 280

So:

292/2.5 = 117 points per one standard deviation on critical reading
280/2.5 = 112 points per one standard deviation on math

According to the normal curve, from the mean:

+.5 standard deviations is 58th percentile
+1 standard deviation is 84.1 percentile.
+1.5 standard deviations is 90.9 percentile.
+2 standard deviations is 97.7 percentile.
+2.5 standard deviations is 98.75 percentile.

So, since every standard deviation is roughly equal to 117 points on reading and 112 points on math...

Critical reading:
508 + .5(117) = 567 = 58 percenile
508 + 1(117) = 625 = 84.1 percentile
508 + 1.5(117) = 684 = 90.9 percentile
508 + 2(117) = 742 = 97.7 percentile
508 + 2.5(117) = 800 = 98.75 percentile

Math:
520 + .5(112) = 576 = 58 percenile
520 + 1(112) = 632 = 84.1 percentile
520 + 1.5(112) = 688 = 90.9 percentile
520 + 2(112) = 744 = 97.7 percentile
520 + 2.5(112) = 800 = 98.75 percentile

So, what the hell did I just say? Sorry, I was bored and decided to do some math. But what I just did was useful to you.

Instead of telling you what I might think is a "good" score, or what other people might think, I gave you (roughly) the percentiles that a score on math and critical reading will get you. You can decide for yourself what percentile, and corresponding score, is "good" or "advanced."

For the SATs, do you have to define a word for the vocabulary section, and if so, how many definitions are there?

Absolutely not.

I usually refrain from answering things like this. The times where I just want to smack some sense into you (the person seeking "advice"), but I can't since I am a level 2 moderator here. But fuck it, this is just horrible.

You're in love with him, and you want to "hook up" with other people just to fuck with him?

What the HELL? Are you incredibly manipulative, or a whore? Or are you both?

I suppose that's your answer right there.

I have an injured jaw (with an unknown cause) and I have to go in for an MRI scan. Has anyone else gone for one? How long do you usually stay? (in the machine) I guess. Haha if you could please tell me about your experience it would be greatly appreciated! THANKSSS! :)

I've had two MRI's in my life. I had my whole head done twice after a concussion, and I was probably in the machine for 15-20 minutes. Since it's just your jaw, they don't need to take it from as many angles, and you might be out in even less time.

As for the overall experience, it wasn't scary, uncomfortable, or anything bad like that. It's actually an interesting experience.

Okay this boy just asked me out and I said yes. I'm 13 and I'm in 7th grade and he's 17 and he's in 9th grade. That's a 4 years age difference so I'm not sure if I should keep going out with him what do you think? I know he loves me he said he said he will respect me and he doesn't care how old I am. He doesnt want you know what, and he's really sweet. I'm sure he really likes me. What do you think of this?

Just be careful. That's all I can say.

Has anyone read

United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination

by John J. Newman

(AMSCO company)?

If so, please tell me your thoughts on it.

According to my AP US teacher, the summaries in that book are good, but the practice questions are not.

I'm 18 he's 21. We are thinking about getting married after 1 year together. He has a lot of sexual fantasies of being with other girls but says he can try to forget about having sex with more people and settle down. Is he REALLY ready for marrige?

I would have to say no.

At 21, he's basically at his sexual peak. If you marry him now, there's a chance he won't be able to restrain his thoughts and urges.

It's just too risky; you don't want to marry him and then get hurt. If you can stay together with him for three more years (the longer the better), then you could be sure that the thoughts have either died down, or he is serious enough to get married.

Because the "/" is supposed to go before the "b," not after it.

I have a Yamaha P250 (top of the line pro stage piano) and a Fender ProJunior tube amplifier. I recently plugged my stage piano into the amp and it sounded killer. My only concern is whether or not it can damage my stage piano or amp. Both items are expensive and I want to keep them in great shape. So, is hooking my stage piano up to my amp going to damage any of my equipment?

It depends on a few things.

Since that's a guitar amp, you could damage that by sending a note that's both too low and too loud through it. The low frequency and high amplitude of the note can blow out the tubes in your amp.

It's essentially the same thing that happens to bass players who use a guitar amp instead of a bass amp.

Basically, if you're playing, just try not to play too loudly, especially when you're on the lower-pitch notes, and you should be fine.

How many tylenol would be considered an overdose? like, what about 5-10 a day?

Follow the recommended dosage on the side of the bottle.

Anything more is considered overdosing.

You know the stuff they use to numb your mouth at the dentist? I don't know what it's called. Well I know that after it wears off, you mouth is still a little sore from the needles but how long is it supposed to stay sore? It's been 4 days for me and I still can't even sleep on my left cheek because of it. The soreness has never lasted so long.

Generally, it's novocaine. Four days is too long to be sore, it should have worn off after a few hours.

You should probably call your dentist and ask why it might be sore this long; he might have used something different, or done something differently.

I'm trying to find a book that explains why the panda bear is not really a bear, and George Washington wasn't the first president of the us, just the first of the Republic, etc.

It's a myth book, and I forgot what it is called.

Do you mean this?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684818868/103-0129127-5993446?v=glance&n=283155

That's only history, though.

My friend has a peanut butter allergy and she has been wondering how to make yourself puke. One time at her house, she accidentaly had something she didn't know had peanut oil in it, and her mom gave her ipecap syrup to make her puke it up. But what if she isn't home, what is another way to make youself puke? Thanks.

Stick something like your finger or a toothbrush down your throat and trigger your gag reflex.

The chair I use at my computer is actually a large recliner. It sits pretty low compared to where my monitor is. After long bouts of using the computer (and since I play WoW, that happens a lot), my neck tends to hurt. I know this is due to my chair. Do I need a harder, taller chair that forces me to sit up? I've moved this chair and sat in it every which way, but to no avail. Any recommendations for a good, not-make-my-neck-hurt chair?

I used to do that to, with my laptop. The hardness of the chair isn't going to affect your neck (although a softer chair is just nicer), you really just need to focus on the height.

The general rule is for monitor placement is that it shouldn't be too high or too low above your head. The best placement is to have it slightly lower than your head, so consider than when you're buying a new chair.

When I ask questions, how do I know that they're completely safe and some advicenator that's a mod2 could spread that I wrote the question? And when your question goes through, can they see your username?

Level 2 and 3 mods can view your username, but only if we click a link that says "Check Account" to do so. It's not visible right next to your question

Generally speaking we:

1. Are trusted to not abuse this privilege.

2. Have no desire to, because even if you feel a question is embarrassing, we've read it already 1000 times from other people and have no desire to check.

3. Will look at it only if it is something that will constitute a ban from the site, or involves some extreme legal circumstance that we have to report to some higher authority, which is, incredibly rare.

So, your questions can be trusted in our hands; don't be afraid to ask them.
