My name is Jen, I go to school, and occasionally learn things. I love James Dean, Hanson, Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty, Fall Out Boy, Elton John and Billy Joel. These make me overly qualified to give advice ESPECIALLY since I spend the vast majority of my time watching and obsesing over Oprah.
I've been through some stuff, and watched even more drama on TV, so I can help with your problems, no matter what your story is Wishbone.

i am going to start going to a tanning beds, dont tell me they can make you have cancer i know, im not going to be addicted but i have a ceromony to go to in a couple weeks and i would like to be tanner, what are things to know a bout tanning salons do you go in and pay for your visit, do you wear tanning lotion? do you tan with a bathing suit or naked? and do you have to wear goggles? and what is the usual cost? (link)
|
Cost varies depending on whether you go unlimited tanning, or buy a certain amount of minutes. If you only want to go for the time preceeding your event, don't get roped into buying a months worth of minutes. Call a couple different salons, and if you have to tell them "so and so was willing to offer me whatever" usually they'll negogiate with you.
You should wear tanning lotion, but don't buy the stuff to wear out in the sun, they apparently crack the beds. They will try to sell you some at the salon, but it's generally expensive (I bought the cheapest brand for $45). You can get tanning lotion made specifically for tanning beds at walmart or a drug store- it's with the sunscreen.
I'd recomend goggles, they're just little and go right over your eyes. Mine were $5 I think.

I don't know what I did, or why she reacted this way.. Like an hour ago, my mom stormed out of the house, crying.. freaking out..
I can understand why she had a breakdown, but I don't know why she said what she did, and acted that way. My grandfather, her dad, passed away just about a week and a half ago. Because of this, it has put her behind in school, to become a nurse. There are other factors, but those two seem to be most stressful at this point.
The trigger was my father not filling up the dog's water dish. (Let me say that they have been married for over 20 years, and out of my 17 years of being alive, I have never seen them hug.) I was in my room and heard her screaming bloody murder. I went out in the other room to see her crying, screaming, and nearly tripping on herself. My brother and my father were just standing there as she was on her rant. Basically she said she doesn't want us in her life, and grabbed the keys to her car, and she's been gone ever since.
I guess my question is, what do I do?
To be honest, I'm scared. She has her attitude, but she has always managed to keep her cool.. This is the first time she's acted this way..
And advice would be greatly appriciated and loved. (link)

I think you should wait for your mother to get home to decide how to act.
So if she comes home like nothing happens, I'd let it go. If she comes home still angry, I wouldn't fight with her, it seems like she's just on edge right now, and anything will provoke her.
It's a stressful time for her like you said, and she might not have meant any of it.
If she has time later on in the week, talk to her about your Grandfather. See if there's anything you can do around the house to help her out. Basically anything. Even if she doesn't need you to, she'll appreciate the offer, and knowing you're there for her.
I'm sorry for your loss, and hope everything goes okay for you.

My boyfriend was with a girl for 6 months. Now weve been together for almost two months, but the other day he called me his exs name. What do I do? (link)
|
Have you ever called your teacher mom? It's just a mistake, doesn't mean he's cheating, doesn't mean he still loves he.
|
hmm i dont rlly kno how to explain this... like you kno the 'scrunched' hair right? but its not scrunched alot all over, its more just kinda wavy but it still has that wet look? yeah well my hair is naturally curly. but i cant get it to srunch right it looks horrible & ive tried so many times! the bottom half of my hair looks ok when i do it, but the top straightens itself out naturally and when i scrunch that it just turns into a big poofy mess. soo usually i end up puttin it up or at least half up. ok my question is.. how can i make the curls in my hair be more wavy rather than curly and have the wet look? also, is there any way i could straighten my hair and then scrunch it while its dry and maybe that would help me get it to work right? (link)
|
When you get out of the shower, braid your hair. More braids for tighter waves, less for looser ones. Use hair spray, or put gel in your hair before whatever. Wake up in the morning, unbraid, and your hair will be wavy.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the wet hair look, it's kind of 90s. If you try using less product on your hair, like just something to defrizz- Biosilk or Pantene's shine stuff, it won't weigh your hair down and let your natural curl hold. Your curl is probably falling because you're using too much product.

This is kind of long and is probably similar to the who knows how many love life questions out there, but i would really like advice.
One of my guy friends just told me that he liked me in the 'more than just friends' way.. apparently he realized that... two days ago? I mean it's great and all since I like him too. But first off, he's two years younger than me so i wonder if that might cause complications since i'm graduating this year [i'm a senior]. He doesn't act like he realizes im older than him. I really like him, even before he told me that he liked me, but i dont know if this will work out or not.. so i guess i'm looking for reassurance that relationships between younger guys and older girls can work out and/or advice about it.
Secondly, our homecoming/coronation dance is coming up in a few weeks.. but he's going with this girl who he used to like and who now really likes him back, because she somewhat pressured him into going. He told me that if 'all this crap hadn't happened', he would have asked me. I dont think it's too late for him to tell her that he doesnt want to go, but he doesnt want to get her upset or whatever because she's really impulsive and could do something stupid (aka cut herself etc). We both really wanted to go to the dance together, but he obviously doesnt want to do anything about the situation and instead of keeps saying how he wishes he hadnt agreed to go with her in the first place. what am i suppose to do about that?
Another thing is that all his friends are expecting them to go together and end up dating. My friend, whos also his friend, only knows half of the story (that he doesnt like theh girl anymore) but she doesnt know that he likes me now so she's trying to 'smooth things over' for them and get him and the other girl together. We both agreed not to tell her because it would just complicate things even more, but i dont know what to do.. I didnt tell him whether or not i liked him yet, because he told me he liked me online and we decided it'd be better if we talked in person first, but what should i do? This just seems like it'll turn out to be a troublesome relationship. I really need advice so please help ): (link)
|
If you go into the relationship looking for trouble, that's what you're going to find.
If his age doesn't bother you in your friendship, it probably won't cause a problem in your relationship. Your friends might make comments, but they'll shut up after awhile.
I don't think you should worry about his brother's actions. They're not the same person, and chances are he saw how it's screwed up his brothers life
and won't take the same path.
This is going to sound kind of condescending, but high school time passes quickly, by Christmas everyone will be like "he went to homecoming with who?" He does sound like a nice guy if he's worried about upsetting this girl by breaking his promise.
These are all things you should discuss with him, he's probably worried about whether or not you can be friends afterwards.

Last night I drank a half a 2'6 of raspberry vodka. This morning the back / roof of my mouth feels very raw and sore.
Could the drinking and pain be related?
Is there any way I can make it feel better?
I have tried eating icecream because it is cold but it did not work.
Thanks so much for your help :) (link)
|
If you drank it straight, then yes most likely. Try drinking lots of water. It shouldn't last too long, it's kind of like when your throat hurts from throwing up.

I was trying to upload the soundtrack to A Little Night Music and La Cage aux Folles on my iPod, and it won't show the song names. It'll only show stuff like "TRACK 01" and "TRACK 07" Neither of them are burned copies, either. I'm thinking maybe because neither of them are in the Music Store...
Does anyone know if it's possible to edit the song titles so it will actually show the name of the song and not just the track number?
(link)
|
the answer below is right, just double click on the titles, it gets kind of frustrating though because I usually end up playing the song.
The only other reason iTunes wouldn't recognize the song names is if you don't have an internet connection. But if you can get to the music store, it sounds like you do.

i got my hair cut. and its ALOT shorter then i wanted it to be. like depressingly short and its growing back SO SLOW!!! is there anything i can do or and product i can use to make my hair grow longer? THANK YOUUU =)
ohh and i have NO intrest in getting extensions (link)

You can take biotin, it's a vitamin. However it's recommended that you are 18 if you do start taking it, or to consult your doctor. It helps your hair grow faster, and makes your nails stronger. However it's not instaneous and it will make your hair grow faster in other places as well.

I have a problem, and my problem is my hair. It is WICKED frizzy, but when I tell people that they're like well mine's worse. HAHAHA I laugh at them because no one's hair is worse than mine. I can barely get a comb through it without tearing up and rip atleast 30 hairs out daily, unless I use my flat iron. My hair looks like someone electricuted me and then decided hell, let's give it another go. So I need help. Can anyone tell me what kinds of products they've tried that work really well (like creams and such) and also, what is the best flat iron out there (doesn't matter if it's $100-$800, let me know) I have a Vidal Sassoon one with the ceramic plates it works really good, but I want one that works even better. Thankyou guys so much, any advice that's given will be rewarded ;) (link)
|
The Chi for a flat iron, and Biosilk Silk Therapy. The silk therapy stuff works with your straightener to smooth your hair out, but works just fine if you don't straighten your hair.
Next time you brush your hair, wet or dry, spray a bit of detangler or leave in conditioner on the brush or your hair. The brush will do less damage and it will help smooth your hair. You also might want to try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, your hair sounds really dry.

On July 24, I had a procedure where I was put to sleep for over 5 hours. Since then, I have not had my period. I am now about two weeks late. I am a virgin so there is no way I could be pregnant. Does anyone know if this could be a side effect of anesthesia?
Thanks in advance. (link)
|
I also couldn't find anything on this topic.
However is it possible that you were fairly stressed out or anxious anticipating your surgery? That could have affected your period. If your surgery changed your eating habits- say you were limited to liquids or just eating less in general, it's also likely to make you late.
If your period doesn't show up within the next two weeks, you might want to talk to your doctor.

I really really REALLY want to get my ears pierced. However, is it a problem that I've had them like....5 times before. Would they get really infected if I got them again? I also wanted to know if getting a piercing below the cartilage hurts. If I get it there, will it hurt?
Please help me!!!
(link)
|
if you've had your ears pierced 5 times in the same spot, then you are going to have some problems. Scar tissue might have built up, making it harder for the needle to go through. As long as you take care of them though, they shouldn't be getting infected. If you don't feel like wearing earrings all the time, make sure you just put an earring through your holes every once in a while so they don't close up and you have to get them repierced.
Below the cartilge should hurt just as much as a first hole would- not at all. However, to reduce the pain, and reduce your chances of infection go to an actual tattoo parlour. Ear piercing guns are fairly unsanitary, and not recommended.

alright, I've heard of Mormons, but who are they? I think its a religion, but like, is it christinity? what do they believe in? is it still a growing religion?
thank you! (link)
|
Mormons are members of the Church of Latter Day Saints, which is a variation of Christianity. They differe from other forms of Christianity in that they believe their founder, Joesph Smith was a prophet. Most of Utah is largely Mormon. A common myth is that bigamy is largely practiced by members- HBO's "Big Love" is about a Mormon with several wives.
I can't find anything about the growth of Mormons, but if you need to know more try

OK, this may seem like a weird question, but, I would just like other opinions about this subject. Now, I understand when it is cold outside, the importance of bundling up your kids so that they are not cold. Plain & simple, but, I am just getting so sick of people saying, "where's her hat, she's gonna get sick!" Just things like that. I believe that you get sick from the GERMS & VIRUSES in the air. Not just the cold weather. I mean how can just getting wet from the rain make you sick? How can you get colds just from some cool air? If that was the case, why don't we get sick from the fans & air conditioning? Because, it is what's IN the air that makes us sick, not just the air itself! I would really like any & all feedback on this because I don't have anything to back up my theory. It's just one persons opinion. Thank You. (link)
|
you cannot get sick from being outside in the cold. It's mainly an old wives tale that hasn't died.
The reason the colder months are cold and flu season is because it's cold, therefore everyone is inside, close together sharing germs. I mean really, if the cold was that dangerous to us, how did people manage to survive before they discovered heat sources?
|
okay so for the past 9 months i have been using dandruff shampoo my dandruff isnt bad but when i scratch my scalp tiny flakes come off and my tiny dandruff is still there after 9 months and ive switched shampoos twice and im not sure whats wrong. I have to scratch my scalp in order for the dandruff to come off but sometimes my head bleeds and its just really annoying me so if anyone has any suggestions tell me. (link)
|
try taking a colder shower. Not freezing, just turn down the heat a little. If you have a tendency to have dry skin, it doesn't just stop at your scalp, it continues.
Also when you shampoo, massage your head, not just your hair, it should slough off some dead skin cells that way they don't end up on your shoulders.

Swim season is coming up meaning that my hair color is going to turn to gross since I died it like a month ago. Does anybody have any tips on how to wash hair color out either gradually or all at once without drying your hair out too much? Thanks. (link)
|
your colour doesn't have to fade because of swimming. Use a swimmers shampoo to protect your hair from the chlorine. John Frieda has a beach blonde line that you can use that isn't just for blonde hair. I believe their is an oil, or something similar you can put on your hair before going in the sun to avoid that kind of damage. I'm sure other brands have similar products.
If you try and strip your hair of the colour (assuming you went darker), it's going to end up brittle and dry. Even if you do go to a salon. There is a colour fader that you mix with peroxide- should be in the hair dye aisle- and it will lighten the colour. But it's not a drastic difference, and it's still not to great for your hair.

I've talked to my parents about it and they say to ignore it, but i tell them that doesn't work but they won't listen. What do i dso to try and stop??
Thanks sooooo much

As you guys get older you'll get along much better. I promise.
But that doesn't help you much right now.
For the time being, just walk away. If a fight starts, leave the room, turn up the tv, find something that you can tune her out with.
Are you fighting about one thing in particular? Like borrowing clothes, or hogging the tv or something. Whatever it is, try and call a truce about it. She can borrow your stuff as long as extends the same courtesy to you etc.
You'll also fight less if you guys spend more time together not fighting. Shopping, watching a movie, playing a board game, whatever, something you can both agree on.

okay i love the way flats look but they always cut the backs of my ankles, does anyone know how i can get them to stop doing that without socks cause i like to wear them with like capris and skirts and stuff and socks wont look right and nylons are a pain the the butt and if i put in the backing things then my foot feels squished. should I just use band aids? thanks in advamce.
16/f (link)
|
you can try band aids, but mine usually stop cutting after I've worn them once or twice.
A fast way to break them in though, is wear them like a slide- basically crush the back with your heel, for a little while around the house, it makes them a little looser. It can also wreck your shoes though.

if you have sex and use a condom what are your chances of getting pregnant or std's? is there a certain time during the month where you're more likely to become pregnent? (link)
|
Although there are some days that you are more likely to get pregnant, you can get pregnant at any time. If you're a teenager it's likely your cycle is still slightly irregular, so don't count on working around it.
Condoms, according to scarleteen.com are about 88% effective.

I am going on vacation for a week and my neighbor has offered to water my garden and vegetables while we are gone. She is an older lady, not elderly but older. She lives next door, but we have a lot of land so it will be a hassle for her to come over and get out the hose, then roll it up again...but she offered and I need the help so I accepted.
My question is, I want to do something nice for her in return but I don't know what. I was thinking maybe a gift card to a grocery store or Wal Mart, but how much $$ is appropriate? Thanks for your advice! (link)
|
since she offered to do it, any amount you give her would probably be appreciated. If you can't spare that much money (or even if you can) if might be nice to present the gift to her with a basket of vegetables from your garden or a bouquet of flowers, just because she helped work on them.
You could also get her a bottle of wine, gift set teas/jams whatevers, day pass to a spa, or something she's interested in if you can't settle on an amount.
