Flu Season

Question Posted Wednesday August 9 2006, 11:49 am

OK, this may seem like a weird question, but, I would just like other opinions about this subject. Now, I understand when it is cold outside, the importance of bundling up your kids so that they are not cold. Plain & simple, but, I am just getting so sick of people saying, "where's her hat, she's gonna get sick!" Just things like that. I believe that you get sick from the GERMS & VIRUSES in the air. Not just the cold weather. I mean how can just getting wet from the rain make you sick? How can you get colds just from some cool air? If that was the case, why don't we get sick from the fans & air conditioning? Because, it is what's IN the air that makes us sick, not just the air itself! I would really like any & all feedback on this because I don't have anything to back up my theory. It's just one persons opinion. Thank You.

What you said is partially true, though it is usually more likely to get a cold in a cool environment, because the cool air does something to the body that weakens the defenses.
I would say you should wear more, but not let those people get to ya. lol.

I'm a microbiologist. You are right, bacteria and viruses cause illness but cold environments and "in and out" of cold weather wears down the immune system of the body (especially fragile children) and yes, that will make it much more likely that your child will get sick. You should most definitely bundle them up when you leave the house in the winter.

i feel the same way. you know what i heard one time? the reason that people get so sick in "flu season" or winter is actually because they don't spend ENOUGH time outside in the air. so they spend too much time inside with germs circulating through the air conditioning. i agree with you- it's what's IN the air. last year, one of my teachers kept all the doors shut and all the windows shut all year in her classroom. so the same air was just being circulated in the same room. she said it was so that it wouldn't get hot, but everybody got sick because we were breathing in all these germs all the time. if one person in that classroom was sick, it was inevitable that everybody else would get sick because it was like being stuck in a box for 2 hours with the same people. but i completely agree with you on the cold doesn't make you sick thing. when i was little, i didn't get as sick in the winter because i played outside all the time. but now i'm 15 and i have school work and stuff to do, so i get sick one or two times every winter because i'm always inside, breathing in the same germs. i mean, it is possible to get sick from being outside if you have allergies, but normal people actually benefit from being outside. so you're not going crazy or anything, you're actually right.

The weather
There is no evidence that you can get a cold from exposure to cold weather or from getting chilled or overheated.

And for the person that said what about pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by different types of germs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Although different types of pneumonia tend to affect children in different age groups, pneumonia is most commonly caused by viruses. Some viruses that cause pneumonia are adenoviruses, rhinovirus, influenza virus (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and parainfluenza virus (the virus that causes croup).

Sickness is more common in cold weather season because we all stay warm TOGETHER. pulling in triple the amount of germs, & viruses.

you cannot get sick from being outside in the cold. It's mainly an old wives tale that hasn't died.

The reason the colder months are cold and flu season is because it's cold, therefore everyone is inside, close together sharing germs. I mean really, if the cold was that dangerous to us, how did people manage to survive before they discovered heat sources?

hey, well yeah what gets you sick is in the air. example say your at a doctors office and your sitting in a chair. say a little boy threw-up in the chair right before you sat in it. that would now be a germ thats in the air. also when people cough and sneeze they put germs in the air too. now about gettign sick from the cold. you can develop amonia(sp?).
