"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

^my forum, liven it up a little?

advice

I have the worst headache ever at the front of my head. It's been there for hours, I've taken two motrin and it won't go away. This has happened recurringly over the past week and I can't take it. It feel like it's behind my eyes, between my eyes and at the top of my head. My head just feels so heavy all the time and I can't bare it.

Does anyone know how to get rid of terrible headaches? I don't mind websites as long as they're short and to the point, so now WebMD. Once again, does ANYONE know how to get rid of this headache?

Hey, I get headaches like that a LOT. & they SUCK =( It feels like my eyes are getting ripped out of my head sometimes, and other times it's a dull ache for days at a time. My doctor diagnosed me with chronic migranes. It's a lot more common than you might think & it's often genetic. You may want to get properly diagnosed by a doctor- basically they ask you if you black out or forget anything when you have them. Stuff like that.

In the meantime, icepacks help a lot. Take 600mg of ibuprofen at a time, it'll work better. Just amke sure you dont exceed the daily maximum- eight pills I believe. If you've been drinking more caffeine that usual, that may be triggering them. Stay hydrated, water is best.

Good luck! =]

well ive tried to go back-to-school shopping, but i cant find anything that looks good on me! all the styles are so unflattering! like the shirts are all so tight and long and come down past your butt. and unless you're built like a runway model, it makes your hips and gut look huge. either that, or its those babydoll tops that poof out and make you look 8 months pregnant. im not fat at all, but none of these things look good on me. or on anyone else i've seen wearing them (besides my one friend who's practically anorexic). i just dont understand why people think these clothes look good? and who comes up with this stuff? and why do people buy it when it looks so bad on them? no offense, but cant they see what they look like? is being "in style" more important than looking good?

I have to disagree with you- I look hideous in short shirts & longer styles are a lifesaver. Depending on how you're built, shirts that go past your hip can be very figure-flattering. Also, tank tops are longer than usual to make layering easier. There's still plenty of styles for you- you just have to look. Hollister & Aeropostale [those two stores come to mind because I was just there the other day] have many styles of shirts that are on the shorter side. Have you tried button-down shirts? Regular t-shirts also tend to be shorter than other shirts. You'll find something you like- you just have to look.

And yes, being "in style" is more important to some people than looking good. On the other hand, what's "in style" is almost guaranteed to look good on someone! That's why there's so many different clothing options to begin with.

Can someone help me figure something out?? I notice that I keep on going in and out of getting tired when I hang out w/ people and friends for a long time. The beginning is fine, but then something happens and then I get tired and quiet. I hate it! I was never like this before. Why do I get tired when I hang out with people for too long? Maybe Im thinking too much?

I think you're just overanalyzig the situation. You were likely going to get tried regardless of who you were with. It's also possible that you're bored with what's going on, in which case you can do something different. Maybe when you're hanging out, you can all do something like walking around and/or being outside. Drink water, because being dehydrated can make you feel tired too.

the other night i had some friends over to watch movies. it was supposed to be just girls, but then my best friend asked if these two guys could come over too. normally i wouldn't have cared, but my boyfriend was out of town, and i knew he'd be mad if i had guys over when he wasn't there. so i told my friend that, but she really wanted them to come because she likes one of them. so i told her i didnt want to officially invite them, but if they just "happened" to drop by (wink wink), then what could i do? so of course they came over. i planned on telling my boyfriend that they just stopped by, looking for him (and that part is true... they really did assume he would be there). but so far i haven't been able to bring it up. and now for the problem. my friend actually told the guys that it was ok with me if they came over, so it sort of IS like i invited them. and soon my boyfriend and i will be seeing them at a party. im sure they'll bring up my little movie night, and i wont be able to act like "oh, it was such a surprise when you came over!", cuz they'd be like, what the heck? aggghhhhh! what should i do? i dont want my boyfriend to think he cant trust me! i wish i had just told my friend no!

ps. its not like i did anything wrong with these guys - they were flirting with my friend the whole time, and they know me and my bf are practically married lol - but my boyfriend and i sort of have an agreement that we wont hang out with other girls/guys unless we're both there.

You haven't lied. It's just a misunderstanding. Why do you and your boyfriend have that agreement in the first place? You should be able to hang out with other guys regardless of if he's there or not, same goes for him with other girls. Since you're "practically married" you should trust each other enough to do that, right?

Talk to your boyfriend BEFORE the party. Tell him that you had a bunch of friends over to watch movies & a couple guys came along to hang out with everyone, not just you, and expected your boyfriend to be there but stayed & watched the movies anyways. If you stay calm it should go over fine. If your boyfriend freaks out because your guy friends came over your house, it's not your fault because you didn't do anything wrong. Maybe have your best friend reassure him that nothing happened at the party? Don't cross that bridge until you come to it, though. He may be totally fine with the whole situation. As long as you're 100% honest with him it should all work out. Good luck!

I am trying to find a plaid button up blouse
preferabbly 3/4 length and that consists of the colors of white, red, blue, purple, etc
or that consists of the colors green, blue, white, etc...
does anyone know where i can find a plaid button up blouse 3/4 length...cause i like layering it on top of a wife beater or white tank..thanks..specific links are greatly appreciated

This shirt's white & navy, but it's long-sleeved.
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90038&productId=1354_5733

Lighter-colors, but the right length:
http://www.aeropostale.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2641088&cp=2284058.2183132&clickid=cat_leftnav_txt&parentPage=family

Stripes?
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90038&productId=2350_5764

Short-sleeve, but the colors you wanted:
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90102&productId=0355_5721

Again, short-sleeve, but good colors:
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90102&productId=2350_5727

If you're planning on going to the actual store, also check clearance sections. 3/4 length sleeves are a summer thing as well as fall, so summer styles may be in a different section. Good luck! =]

Ohkay so like an hour ago i ate some bread. And the bread seemed okay. and i look at the slice on the bottom and it was covered with mold!! And guess what, im not feeling good. What do i do!!I realllyy dont want to throw up. I feel like i am . Does anyone know how to make my stomach feel better!

please answer as soon as possable.

much appreciated.

Moldy bread won't usually make you feel sick unless you actually ate the moldy part, so I'm sure you're fine. Cheese IS mold, and we eat that all the time! I bet if you had never seen that bottom slice you wouldn't be feeling sick right now. If you're not worrying so much, you probably won't feel sick anymore. In the meantime, drink something bubbly like clear soda.

EDIT: Haha, yeah. When cheese packages say "aged two years", they ain't kidding! =]

Feel better soon!

You look like a man.
=]

First off, things like this aren't even questions! =D

Don't like something about me? Great, I don't care. Want some advice? GET A LIFE. Apparently you haven't realized yet, but people who find faults in others and can never see the best in them are PATHETIC. If you didn't want to hear that, too bad.

For the record, the only person who can really make me hate myself is ME. And I don't want or need your help. Go do something constructive with your time, like playing in traffic or watching paint dry. Have a nice life!

Hope I helped! =D

hey i have a school skirt thats way too long and my mom won't hem it anymore, so i have to roll it to make it shorter. but the problem is it's also too big, and i cant get a new one (i have really good reasons for that so dont suggest getting a new one=p)

so anyway, when i roll it theres a dent in my shirt so you can see that i roll it so how do i make it less noticeable or make it look shorter? and also how do i get my skirt to stay up? it keeps sliding down cause its so big!

any tips or advice? please answer soon i have school tomorrow!! all answers appreciated

Try folding it over once instead of rolling, and wear a longer shirt if you can to cover the waistband. Also, try using a safety pin to sort of gather the material along the waistband and make the skirt smaller. Do you have a belt? Try using one. If you usually air-dry your skirt, putting it in the dryer on high heat could shrink it for awhile, it works sometimes.

Good luck =]

I have a very small room and I have a bunch of makeup, and perfume, what can I put it in that will still look cute? And what are some other ideas for hodling stuff and making things take up less space. Also, I wanna put pictures up on my wall but tape with time they start folding out, any ideas?

If you have a closet, try to use shelf space. If you don't have shelves, make some. Get some cheap wood, paint it, and put it up with brackets. That way, you can fold off-season clothes for storage. If you have one, a dresser or even a nightstand doubles as storage [in drawers or shelves depending on the design] and space for makeup & perfume. Arranging them in front of a mirror is pretty & also, mirrors open up a room. Try hanging one over the door [or open wall space]. Also make a good effort to have adequate lighting. Rearrange the furniture you have until you find a setup that works, gives you as much floor space as possible & allowes you to move around easily. Put hooks on the walls if you're allowed to & hang hoodies, jackets, bags, etc. Store things under the bed in boxes or rolly containers.

As for the pictures, put tape on all 4 corners, put them in frames, or make a collage of them on a piece of posterboard and hang that up with poster putty or a nail or two.

Good luck with your room!

So I'm short [16/f], so i still have to shop in the girls section for jeans. Which sucks sometimez cuz they got them ugly butterflies and crap on it. So this year I think I'm gonna get one or two pairs of jeans from abercrombie kids, because i hear they fit good. The only problem for me is that they are way too expensive and I can't afford to get a lot of pairs of jeans there. So basically, my question is if anyone knows of a store I can go or visit the site that has girl jeans like abercrombie kids but a little cheaper. Like between $15-$25?
Thanks.

Delia's has extended sizes- in both directions. You can get inseams as small as 26", and several styles are available in 28":
http://store.delias.com/browse.do?categoryID=1152&sidenavTrack=apparel.denim.28

Shopping around is your best bet. Shop at the mall & go into every store that sells jeans. Try Limited Too & Rave Girl; they usually have basic jeans & pants [especially now with school uniform stuff you could get non-embellished pants]

Good luck!

on facebook, how do people get so many friends from the college theyre attending if they didnt even go there yet

They sent friend requests to those people and added them. A lot of upperclassmen add incoming freshmen & talk about the school, campus life, teachers, etc. The same goes for high schools.

I have really bad/moderate/occassional acne and I want clearer/smoother skin/fewer zits. Help!

Adopt a daily regimen for caring for your skin. Yes, caring. Not attacking/exfoliating to death/burning off/peeling/annihilating with rubbing alcohol, et cetera. Treat your skin well & it will thank you.

First off, you're going to want a good face wash. Get one with salicylic acid that's good for your skin type. Don't automatically assume your skin is oily just because you have acne. If parts of your face are dry [especially your jawline and sides of your face] you have COMBINATION. Using intense products will irritate your skin. Irritated skin = red skin. Red skin = what you don't want. A great product is Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash. It comes in a pump bottle & it's orange. Use it twice daily. Anything more will over-stimulate your pores & cause your skin to produce too much oil- just what you don't want.

EDIT: The new grapefruit version smells absolutely amazing! If you aren't allergic to grapefruits I definitely recommend getting this one instead - its worth the extra dollar or two.

Acne is caused by blocked pores. Unblock them faster by using a gentle scrub, like St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Use it at night every day, or every other day if your skin is sensitive.

Spot treatments help clear up acne faster by staying on your skin longer than a face wash will. A product with benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid is best. Clean&Clear Advantage is great & works quickly to reduce redness. If your skin is on the oily side, consider an astringent. Clean & Clear has one for sensitive skin, it's blue & comes in a regular bottle. Apply it with a cotton ball to oily areas once daily.

All of these products can be purchased for $4-8 at WalMart, Target, CVS, Hannafords, RiteAid, whatever's in your town. If your acne is still really bad [or if you have stubborn, frequent cystic acne] consider seeing a dermatologist. They can analyze your skin and prescribe antibiotics and/or topical creams such as Retin-A Micro & clindamycin.

Also, remember that picking at zits all the time only makes them redder & they'll stick around a lot longer than they would have if you left them alone. Plus, you'll end up with scarring- and no one wants that! No food CAUSES zits, so don't deprive yourself of an occassional Snickers bar because of your skin. However, eating healthy, getting plently of sleep, and drinking lots of water will make your skin more vibrant & healthy-looking, and who doesn't want that?

Moisturization is very important too. It's important to wash away excess oil, but sometimes ALL the oil will get washed away. And that will increase oil production, and then your zits. Ew! So, moisturize after washing your face [if you're a guy, you don't have to tell anyone ;)] and your skin will thank you. Make sure it's oil free [or something like Eucerin if your skin is uber sensitive]

Lastly, I won't take any credit for it, but Jack's FAQ on the same subject works really well & is all-natural. I feel as though this FAQ is incomplete without it.

ok. im starting highschool. and i'm not sure what to wear for the first day /week. i dont think we can wear tank tops, so yeah.

these are things i have in my closet..
-skinny jeans [dark ones and light ones]
-polos. [navy blue ones and maroon ones. i dont wear polos much..]
-skirts.
-regular jeans.
-black and white polka dot baby doll top. [thats really cute.]
-white shorts
-plaid shorts
-regular tshirts that just say like abercrombie or has a gumball machine on it. and stuff.
-this other cute hollister shirt, it has like a bow and stuff. its cute.

i have alottt of other clothes too. like stuff that all matches that stuff. i'm pretty sure i wanna wear the skinny jeans. the light ones, i roll up. and then the darker ones i keep down. i'm thinking of wearing the darker jeans. i dont knowww. what do most people wear on the first day?

[my mom wont let me get clothes right away, because when i switched to a public school in junior high, i kept changing my taste in styles.]

i mean i know what i like. like im into that whole california look. and i shop at places like urban behavior, a little h+m, abercrombie & fitch, hollister, forever 21, aeropostale, amercian eagle[kinda] places like that.

so any ideas?

Wear the jeans you want, and maybe the babydoll top if it matches, or another favorite top [Maybe the one with the bow?]. If you wear favorite pieces, you'll feel a lot more comfortable. Wearing jeans is a good idea on the first day because they're comfy & you probably don't know if your classes have AC or not & you wont freeze or die of heatstroke in jeans =]

As for buying new clothes, buy basics that fit your style that can be worn with things you already have. That way, you have the "new clothes" feeling but your mom is happy too because you're getting your money's worth from all the clothes you own. Buy the shirts you like on end-of-season clearance, have an All-Access Pass for American Eagle [spend $100 and you'll have a nice discount in a couple months!] things like that.

Good luck in highschool! It's a great experience.

will shox hold up well in the washing machine? if it makes any difference theyre imitation shox but will they fall apart or anything? what about converse?

You're better off washing them by hand in the sink with a sponge. The shoes won't fall apart in the washer, but they'll get COMPLETELY waterlogged and take days to dry. If the insides stink, sprinkle baking soda in them and let them sit for a few days [when the shoes are dry]. Also invest in some Odor Eaters.

Shoes can go in the dryer, but the sound of them banging around could get annoying after awhile. Use medium heat & they should be just fine.

Hi
I live in a FL home and on my kitchen surfaces a huge colony of ants has settled !!
is there a way i can get rid of them without poisoning the kitchen surfaces?? and is it expensive
the ants are small and brown they're tiny and look like regular ants in mini form they dont sting or anything but they get everywhere in food too! help please
thanks in return

There's biodegradeable ant killer that you can buy fairly inexpensively at most stores. Once they're gone, clean your counters frequently to get rid of food residue. I've also heard that drawing a line of chalk keeps ants away because they hate the smell or something. If you can't get rid of them, call an exterminator. You don't want an infestation.

when i talk to my friends on the phone
i can like be all like crazy and stuff
and we always think of stuff to talk about
like the most random stuff
but when i talk to a guy that i like
its like blah.
i dont even think of anything to talk about
and im shy
and me and this guy text alottt
and we live kinda far away and we might start a relationship
but its gonna hurt us alot if we do
becasue its my fault casue i like dont talk
and i hate it. im just really shy to guys i like
and he always gets mad at me cause i dont talk
so any suggestions what we can talk about
like i seriosuly need help with it
because we both like eachother alottttt!

Talk about your day. You always find things to talk about with your other friends- do the same with him!

Ask him a completely random question out of the blue, like "If you were stuck on a desert island and had to eat one food for all eternity, what would you choose?". Try getting The Book of Questions- I was on the phone for three hours discussing it.
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780894803208&itm=1

If the conversation stops for awhile & it's getting awkward, either start talking again or ask what he's up to- he may be doing something that you can talk about. Or say "Sheesh, don't us all talk at once now..." or "Don't talk so fast I can't hear ya!" Good luck =]

ok,so i was on www.barenecessities.com and i saw a bra that would b perfect for the dress im wearing to a wedding.it wasnt strapless, but it was a REALLY deep plunge.like i think it was called a U-Plunge?
but i really need to find one like it quickly.
its not strapless, but if u could find a strapless one that would be amazing.
thanks

Victoria's Secret has every style you can imagine. If they didn't have a strapless version, you could easily get one with clear straps or interchangeable strap styles [like a halter or whatever would match the dress]. You could find a similar style for a lower price by shopping around; try Aerie, Kohl's, even Wal-Mart. Good luck!

ok so last fall my boyfriend started liking this other girl. he told her he was gonna break up with me, and they kissed. the next morning he called me crying and told me it was a huge mistake, and he didnt want to lose me, and blah blah blah. so i gave him another chance.

so for while he didnt talk to that girl. but they had a class together and after a while they started sitting together and became "good friends." and then i started hearing about how he was always flirting with her and stuff. so of course i talked to him about it, many times, and finally i told him if he wanted to stay with me, he couldnt talk to her anymore. and he promised not to.

so then we were at this end of school party, and of course she was there, with her new boyfriend. and my boyfriend didnt actually TALK to her, but he was constantly around her and showing off like an idiot in front of her the whole time. so i told him it was obvious that he liked her, and i broke up with him. he spent the next few days crying and begging me to take him back, swearing he didnt like her.

well, as soon as that girl heard that id broken up with him, she dumped her boyfriend. so i told him, here's your chance, you can go out with her now, obviously she likes you. but he said he only wanted to go out with me. and then SHE wrote me a note, saying that i should go back out with him, that she doesnt like him and he doesnt like her, and that we're perfect together, and i shouldnt be mad at him, i should be mad at her cuz it was all her fault. (i didnt really get that last part, but whatever).

sooo... we got back together, and we've had an awesome summer and everything has been perfect. but now school is about to start. and i just know hes gonna have a ton of classes with her, and i cant stop worrying about it. arrrrggghhh! and i keep wondering if maybe he just stayed with me for the summer (cuz we live down the street from each other, whereas this girl lives far away and he'd never see her during the summer).

should i be worried? or am i just paranoid? im just dreading school starting because of this and i hate feeling this way. someone please tell me how to stop worrying or what i should do if you think i do have something to be worried about. (i hope that made sense!)

Honestly I wouldn't be worried. He's decided that he doesn't like this girl anymore- which has nothing to do with how much he likes you, no one can help who they like. She's told you the same thing. Her breaking up with her boyfriend at the same time was probably just a coincidence.

Whether or not you worry about your boyfriend and this girl being in classes together is based entirely on how much you trust him. Don't be too paranoid about him flirting with other girls- a lot of guys do this unintentionally & it doesn't usually mean anything, they're just being friendly (and there's nothing wrong with your boyfriend being friends with other girls, even girls he used to like)
