they probably found random people to message so that they could go ahead and start making friends. also, i'm still in high school, but i have some friends that already graduated from my high school and are now in college. so that could be the case too. older friends, family members, neighbors, and stuff like that. or sometimes they go ahead and join the college network, and request other people from their year, and ask what dorms they are in and stuff. it's just a way of getting to know more people before you actually show up. but i think you probably read their interests or whatever, and if they sound cool, then you would message them i suppose.

Well, they probably have friends, like upper classmen from that college, or family, + their friends. Or they joined the college network, and are talking to people about the college, and they ask how they like it, and then they end up requesting eachother :]!

i hope i helped.

They sent friend requests to those people and added them. A lot of upperclassmen add incoming freshmen & talk about the school, campus life, teachers, etc. The same goes for high schools.
