"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

advice

During spelling bees, is there a round or time when the teacher [or whoever is asking for the words] when they ask for definitions and then you have to spell it? My teacher won't tell me anything and I don't want to be alarmed when I get to that round when they tell me a definition and I don't know the word!

Please inform me about this! I want to win super bad! [Hey, I like that movie, lol]

Thank you, guys!

They give you the word you're spelling, but they'll give you the definition if you ask for it.

On Monday my teacher warned my Eight Grade class that we are going to have a classroom spelling. Whoever passes it will go to the School Spelling Bee, which i am very excitd about, because i am a GREAT speller. Although I don't know what the words are going to be, I am very anxious, curious, and scared that I don't know how to spell a word because I never heard or seen it before.

Any tips on how I canbe good at Spelling Bees?
And also do you guys know where I can find the words that are frequently used in Spelling Bees? Either class spelling bees or school, or BOTH :)

I could really use your heklp for my advantage/benefits. I would gladly appreciate if you take your time to give me some advice and help me out so I will feel good & confident when it is my turn to spell, rather than freaking out.

Conclusion:
I REALLY WANT TO GET TO THE TOP AND WIN THE SCHOOL SPELLING BEE SINCE I DIDN'T WIN THE GEOGRAPHY BEE. I KNOW I NEED TO STUDY THE WORDS EACH DAY AND NOT CRAM ALL THE WORDS IN MY HEAD 3 DAYS BEFORE THE COMPETITION. BUT DO YOU GUYS KNOW ANY WAY HOW TO HELP ME OUT WITH WORDS? ANY TRICKS AND TIPS?

More:
Do you guys know any hard words that you think I can spell?

If there's more to say, please add more information and go beyond the advice, meaning, give a really helpful advice to me.

14/female/8th grade :),
Future spelling Bee QUEEN :)

Hey, I've been in two spelling bees. I never won (the first one I won, but later lost; very complicated story involving incomeptent judges) but I came close.

The most important thing is planning what you're going to say before you say it. You don't have to blurt out an answer right away, you can think about it first and they won't get upset in the slightest. If you're stuck (or know already and just want more time to think) ask for whatever they can provide- a definition, word origins, ask them to repeat it, use the word in a sentence, etc. All of those things are really helpful, so take advantage of them.

When you're studying, write down words you're not sure of, and go back to them. Ask a friend for family member to help you practice format of answers, like if you have to say the word, spell it, and say it again for example, practice doing just that.

If you get a word you don't know, take your best shot & sound it out. Break it down into smaller sections, whatever method works for you.

The spelling bee usually starts with easy words so you'll build up your confidence really quickly. During the bee, if someone before you messes up, remember what they did & don't do the same thing!

I also suggest asking a similar question to this to the regular question queue (don't copy-paste though, you'll get in trouble!) and you'll get a lot more answers. Good luck!

i would prefer answers from guys, but girls can answer too...

i recently heard that if a guy has his eyes open while he's kissing, it means he's thinking about something other than the person he's kissing. is this true? just curious. thanks.

Nope, not true at all. At least in my opinion.
I used to think that if their eyes were open they weren't focused, or thinking about someone else. Your mind can wander regardless of what your eyes are doing, and having them opened or closed doesn't make a difference really. Also keep in mind that some people can't close their eyes all the way, haha.

Besides, how do you know if their eyes are open? Yours would have to be open to, eh? And they're probably thinking/worrying the same thing! =P

what does "wash you out" mean?

i.e.:

"Make sure the makeup/clothing doesn't wash you out"

Simply put, you look pale/drained of color/sickly.

For example, a pink shirt could look really good with your skin tone, while a royal blue makes your skin look yellowey. Basically, "make sure your makeup/clothing doesn't wash you out" means "make sure the colors you get look good on you".

It's one of those things you figure out for yourself rather quickly, and probably already do without knowing it. =)

I need the code to hide myspace headings such as "television" and "books" or the code to add more headings.. but I need the headings to blend with the others... and not look different.

.. and I don't use a layout, ever.

There's a code that does exactly that on www.createblog.com

I can't send you an exact link right now [the site is blocked on the computer I'm using], but it's under myspace scripts. Searching doesn't work that great, just go through th 12 or so pages of scripts & you'll find it.

I've been straightening my hair almost everyday since school started (horrible, I know..) and since it's winter and extra dry, my hair's been dry too. I have always had long, thick hair and now I just noticed yesterday how THIN it's getting!! Last week I started noticing I was getting those little pieces of hair that stick out all over on the top of my head. When I brush my hair, pieces of hair fall off and break off my head and seriously my sink and floor have hair all over them. I use this --> http://shop.ryf.de/images/smooth-serum1.jpg

Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. I am trying to only limit my hair straightening to one or two times a week. What should I do about the damage already!! I've always had long thick beautiful hair and parts are already looking gross and fried. UGH PLEASE HELP.

Bed Head and Catwalk products from TIGI are both really good for your hair. Not to mention they smell totally awesome. Try not to straighten your hair everyday. The serum you have now works really well in damp hair- after a shower, put a small amount in towel-dried hair and scrunch. If your ends are really dry and split, get a trim ASAP- split ends will only get worse & nothing will fix them. Luckily, many products help prevent them, including the serum. Tresseme makes a good heat protecting spray, and it's really inexpensive. You can get one at the salon too. You'll pay more, though. I think it's in the Fashionista line. Ask whoever cuts your hair; they'll know what I'm talking about & which formula works better with your hair type (there's a spray and a gel-like one). On the days you straighten your hair, try turning the heat down a few levels. The results will more than likely be identical, while less heat = less damage.

hi. I'm 16 and i don't know how to put make-up! I'm not that girly kind but prom is in a few weeks and I still have no idea about the basics. Can u please give me a step by step procedure or suggest any sites that can help a lot!

--thanks in advance..

Sites if you prefer those:

only search advicenators.com

only search advicenators.com

Since you're not used to doing your makeup, I suggest doing exactly what you want to do before the day of prom. That way, you can determine if the eyeshadow colors you have make you look like a clown [or worse, if you're allergic to a product]. Enlist the help of a friend if you can. Maybe even get ready for prom together at someone's house.

You'll want your own makeup. Sharing makeup isn't a very good idea because it can easily spread infections. I'll recommend brands but there's LOTS to try, you don't have to go by my recommendations.

Foundation:
Anything Neutrogena will be very easy on your skin. Liquid foundation blends easier than others and is less likely to look fake as it wears off. Clinique is also a good brand, but you'll pay a lot more for it and you have to buy it at a makeup counter.

Powder:
Especially important for a dance/pictures. This will "set" your makeup and control shine. Loose powder is easier to apply in my opinion and controls shine better too. Covergirl is a good brand. TruBlend With Minerals really makes your face glow without looking weird. My boyfriend notices the sparkles sometimes =)

Mascara/eyeliner:
Practice makes perfect, but it's not that hard to do. Go slowly & if you want to use more than one coat, do so before it dries. Maybelline Great Lash never fails & I've never had a problem with it [and I have sensitive eyes so i think it's a good choice for anyone] As for eyeliner, don' go overboard. Ask a friend's opinion what looks best on you/with your dress. Any pencil eyeliner will work fine, but try to find a waterproof one. Black is a universal color.

Eyeshadow:
Stick to neutral colors. They're a) easier to apply and blend, b) don't look strange as they wear off, and c) won't look scary on film. Almay makes trios for every eye color & the colors match really well. Maybelline eyeshadow is also really nice & has application guidelines on the back.

Lips:
A pretty pink gloss, or even a sheer color, will probably do. Unlike lipstick you don't have to practice to put it on right, and as it wears off it's not yucky looking, and who has time for a lot of touch-ups at prom? If you really hate gloss, stick to a basic Chapstick or Burt's Bees lip tint or whatever else you like.

That's really wordy but I hope you find it useful anyways haha. My inbox is open if you still need help, and have fun at prom!

I've been sweating under my arms since July. It won't stop. And I don't even have to be hot or nervous. It's embarressing and all I wear is hoodies and it's going to look a little bit odd in the summertime. It's getting pretty ridiculous and I don't know how to stop it. I've tried everything. Certain Dri, Secret Clinical Strength. Nothing will make it go away so it seems. My mom agreed to take me to the doctor and see what he says about it but I don't think that will be anytime soon.

Has anyone had this problem and found a way to cure it? Please..

Doctors can presecribe stronger deoderant as well as do botox injections into sweat glands or something like that. Go here:

only search advicenators.com

and see if any might work for you. With products like Certain Dri, you can easily use too much & cencel out the effects the product will have. So, make sure you're using the right amount. Also, try different formulations of the same brand [ie: gel deoderant may not work for you when a soft solid will keep you from sweating at all]. good luck.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm confused. Please don't answer if you're not really sure about your answer. I recently download a Good Charlotte song but I'm not sure what the real title is. I looked on iTunes and it had 2 diff titles and I think it was the same song. Is it "I don't wanna be in love (Dance Floor Anthem)" or just plain "Dance Floor Anthem"..... I think it was "Dance Floor Anthem" when I saw it on TRL from MTV. I want to put the correct title on my iTunes library.

It's the same song. A lot of songs have two titles like this; such as Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. The song is known by both titles (and actually, both appear in the album)

im sorry this is dumb-but i went over my text messages ALOT! this month and im really scared for the bill to come, if i have like 1500 messages, how much is each one that i went over on going to cost me?!

I have Verizon, and for every message I go over it's ten cents. So if you've got that plan, you're looking at a $150 bill this month.

I have cuts on/near my wrists .
I don't cut , Never have .
They used to be light , Now Im getting new cuts that are deeper and more noticeable .
People think Ive been cutting .
Honestly , I haven't .
This has been going on for a few months , What is it ?
Could it just be coincidence ?
I know , Odd question .
Butt , I don't want my friends getting the wrong idea .

You could be scratching yourself in your sleep. I'd see a doctor to be safe, but try wearing gloves to sleep for a little while first & see if it helps. It may be something simple like that.

i need help with my english essay! i have been doing bad in english and i need some basic ideas for this essay.
here is my assignment:

Atticus says to Jem, "remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee 90). This becomes a major metaphor throughout the novel. Explain why Atticus says this and then "climb into [the] skin" of at least two other characters in the novel and explain how they are human mockingbirds (Lee 30). Remember one does not have to die in order to be "killed". You must use at least three quotations in this essay and include proper citation.

PLEASE! anything at all is greatly appreciated. I will not copy exactly what anyone says in my essay :)

i just need some suggestions for characters i should use and why

thank you SO much

Boo Radley - > held hostage by his father, essentially "died on the inside" because of being stuck inside and never being allowed to live his life.

Tom Robinson - > was killed despite being an innocent man.

Basically, it's a sin to kill a mockingbird because all they do is sing & they don't cause trouble for anyone, so there's no reason to hurt/kill them.

can someone please tell me how to create my own web site without having to pay anything.i want a web site where i can give advice to people who ask me questions.

http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/learn2/HowItWorks4_Free.html

Or you could make an account here... because advicenators is almost exactly what you want isn't it?

EDIT: So why the one? Geocities makes free websites too. Maybe if you read the entire answer you'd get more out of it.

i want to order one of them online but i don't know what size i am because i've never bought anything off that website before. i'm 15 5'4" i from hollister im a Medium/Large and American Eagle i'm a medium but in some things i can fit into a small. if something is marked "adult size" i usually get a small and it fits me well. can anyone give me an idea if a Ralph Lauren Large rugby will fit me? (i like a little room, not skin tight) thanks!

Right on that page there's a link that says "size chart" Take your measurements (or compare them to a size chart from American Eagle) and match them to the sizes. It also says that if you want it to be roomy, to size up. Keep in mind that shirts stretch out as you wear them, too. So I'd go with whatever size you actually are at ralph lauren.

I'm a 15 f and my last period was around the 11th of november. I posted this question on the public board but I need advice fast. So anyway, I've had sex a few times since the begining of november but all times were protected. I haven't gotten my period yet this month and I have had diarrea a lot lately. I googled it and it said that it could be an early sign of pregnant and that women sometimes get it around the time they miss their period. So I was wondering if it's possible I'm pregnant and what I should do now. Thanks in advance.

Take a test & establish if you're actually pregnant. You're clearly stressing out & that can make you miss a period. If you are, in fact, pregnant, tell a parent (they're gonna find out eventually anyway, might as well come from you) or find a trusted adult who can help you out. There's many options available to you. Best of luck & my inbox is open if you need more help.

could teeth whitening ever cover up years of not brushing?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/fembott/7%20Senior/3%20November/b6f648f0.jpg

i wanna go from teeth on left to teeth on right!

would crest whitestrips help or do i need to take more drastic measures and go laser or something? professional bleaching

Whitestrips help a LOT. You'd be surprised.
Since your teeth are really yellow, you could even do them twice (wait about a month inbetween boxes though) Plus, it's a relatively inexpensive option. Get the regular ones, classic or whatever? The other ones are essentially the same but come in a better box.. that's about it.

Also, before you go out and spend a ton of money at the dentist, get Arm & Hammer Advance White toothpaste. It's not the greatest tasting (cause it has baking soda in it), but you'll get used to it. If it's really nasty-tasting, use that and then a regular toothpaste. I use that stuff daily & I drink coffee like it's my job. And my teeth are really white- I get compliments on them from random people, it's kind of weird but also lets me know that they're really white.

Good luck!

ive been doing really well on guitar hero 3 on easy. i can do like any song. i want to get to medium but when i tried, i was awful like i cant get the blue at all, i cant do all 4. does anyone have any tips at all on how to get through it so i can get better?

The same exact thing happens to me!
My friends are some of the best I've seen [like, 90% notes hit on expert good] and they've told me that doing the tutorials at the beginning, as well as the practice things, will help. I've never had the chance to do those things, but I'd take their word for it =) Good luck, and remember that the main thing is practice.

What do i do if my friend uploaded a video on youtube and many people called her a chink with many other racist comments? Is making racists comments about their nationality a good idea?

No, it's not a good idea but honestly, it's youtube.
Tell your friend to ignore them and get on with her life. They're just being immature.

I was just curious about this, but if you are under 17, are you allowed to buy R rated movies from Walmart? Or does the same rule apply to this situation like it is when you go see an R rated movie in the theaters (showing an ID).

Technically you're not supposed to be able to, but it's hard to come by a cashier who actually notices & enforces that rule. It probably won't be a problem.

When I scrunch my hair, the mousse leaves my hair looking totally gelled and very sticky/dark. I tried Aussie Sprunch spray, but it still leaves my hair looking plastered together! Do you know of any products and or tips to keeping my hair natural looking but wavy?

Try a lighter product. I use Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. It's the best product ever & it's worth its weight in gold. There's cheaper products similar to it, if you want to spend less than $20. Garner Fructis and John Frieda both amke really goos serums. Also, use less of the product, you might just be using too much.
