"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

wicked awesome conversations

^my forum, liven it up a little?

advice

i wanna get a pair of boots..i normally wear a 7 but they only have a 6 1/2..i Really love them so much..would it make a big difference?

Your feet will be snug in them. If you're willing to put up with that then get them, but relying on the possibility of them stretching out might disappoint you. Consider that before buying a pair of boots you might never wear. It is only half a size, though, so you might be all right. Buy them from a site or store with a good return policy though. Sometime stores will ship other sizes to you for free.

What age do you think is appropriate to lose your virginity?

There is no 'appropriate' age, because for every person it's different. You should be mature enough to accept the possible consequences of your actions, such as pregnancy, STDs/STIs, and emotional attachment. Ideally, you'd be with someone you cared about deeply/loved. And of course you would both be using appropriate methods of birth control & know how to use them properly.

So really, there's no age to pinpoint, but I think a person would have to be at least in their mid to late teenage years before being able to make a decision like this.

full eyebrows or thin ones

It really depends on the person; really thin eyebrows are difficult to pull off.

Fuller eyebrows are, in my opinion, very pretty.
I'm also envious of them because I slightly over-tweezed mine and they haven't been the same since =/

When in doubt, keep them full, but not bushy.

okay so i have a boyfriend. me and his best friend(eric) are really close and he likes me and i like him. my boyfriend is out of town. so me and eric are hanging out one night and we have an inside joke that at 11 each night we will have sexy time.last night we kinda had it. we were in his bed and we would take turns taking off clothes. he was in his boxers and i stole his shirt so i had everything but my bra on.he undid my bra. is this cheating?

Would you want your boyfriend doing that with YOUR best friend if YOU were out of town? Exactly.

It's not fair to your boyfriend that you're taking your clothes off with his best friend. It's definitely not being faithful and if you want to stay with your boyfriend I'd stop what you're doing with Eric. You can't be with both of them.

For some reason, I can't cry at funerals because I just don't cry that often.

But I was wondering if this was bad or heartless? Because once my cousin got mad at me because I wasn't crying at her dad's funeral and it makes me feel awful that I can't cry during these times.

Are there any other ways to display emotion, if not in tear-form?

Some people just don't cry. Ever. You're totally normal.

Your cousin only got mad at you because she was already upset. It's not your fault. Reverse the situation, and you'd easily be getting mad at the lawn for being too green. Seriously, grieving does strange things to people.

Others have already given you good suggestion on how to display emotion, and just saying 'I am sorr for your loss' and offering a hug is enough compassion.

im going back to school in a couple of days and im gonig to be wearing the same clothes i wore last year. im really worried cuhz people care about that kind of stuff. and i can only afford a couple of jeans and a few shirts. i also only get about 200 dollars a month, but that's not just for clothes, it's for everything, my parents don't give me additional money. i really wish we could wear uniforms so i wouldnt have to worry about this. ive been trying to get a job so please don't tell me i should do that, my towns population is a million and jobs are scarce. ive been spending about 5-10 dollars on shirts, and 10-20 on pants. is there anywhere that could be cheaper? also if you're in the same situation, please tell me how you deal with this. haha, im dirt poor :/

Steve and Barry's stores are very inexpensive. I personally have never gone, but I've heard a lot of good things about that store and nothing is more expensive than I beleive eleven dollars; twenty in the 'designer' lines.

Kohl's has an excellent clearance section. I've seen jeans for six dollars, and shirts for as little as four. Aeropostale is good too, especially if you go at the right time; I've gotten my favorite pants there for 5.99. Cheap shirts are everywhere: Charlotte Russe, Aero, and even American Eagle sometimes. Look for a couple new pieces that you can mix with old ones. Like, no one's going to notice an 'old' tank top being worn with a new hoodie, because styles don't change very much. Don't worry too much about jeans, because that's another item that stays the same. I'd get a new sweater over a new pair of jeans, 'cause a sweater would be noticed more.

Also, set aside a couple hours and dig through all the racks at a local secondhand store. If you really look, you can find some amazing stuff. I've found new courdory pants from AE for 6.99, and one of my friends got an abercrombie sweater for the same price. Lots of those things still have the tags on, too! Savers [if it's near where you live] has '99 Cent Monday' where a certain color tag is 99 cents!

You've probably already considered it, but- have you looked at things you have that you could alter and/or dye? An old knee-length skirt could be re-hemmed into a miniskirt. Plain white tees can be dyed a new color, jeans can be re-hemmed [really. my mom's done some great things to old pants before] to look like new.

- www.ae.com [go to clearance, and some jean styles/colors are only $20 with free shipping!]
- savers.com [has a store locator!]

never been to a formal homecoming but me and my boyfriend decided we'd go for kicks.
i need some ideas on Short not super short but about knee legth dresses that i can find something cute from.
& shoes that would go with. im bad with cordinating things.
the only Jewerly i have is white gold so i would like it to go with that.
im not looking to spend over $$100

if it helps i have medium brown hair about shoulder length.
Hazel eyes (brown, Gold, & Green)
and fair colored skin
hieght 5'6"er7"ish
Weight about 120lbs.

DEB and Macy's have relatively inexpensive dresses but they're still really nice. Even full price you'll pay about sixty dollars at most at Deb, and maybe upwards of $80 at Macy's.

Don't worry about your shoes too much. Most people take them off soon after the dance starts, and even if you don't, it'll be really dark. Borrow a pair from a friend/aunt/your mom, or get an inexpensive pair from Payless or DSW. I don't see a need to pay a lot for shoes. Especially for homecoming, if you want to splurge wait for prom to do that! =]

Silver/white gold jewelry matches just about any color. It actually matters more if jewelry matches your skintone in most cases. Hairstyles for homecoming are more casual, not many people get formal updos.

It would be cute if you and your boyfriend matched. If he's wearing a tie, coordinate that with your dress, otherwise just match his shirt with your dress color[s].

Have fun at your dance!

A question just popped in my head and I was wondering can a tampon pop your cherry because I think I popped mine but I'm not sure.

A lot of things can break your hymen, and using a tampon is one of them. You're still a virgin until you have sex, though. Breaking your hymen during something besides sex] doesn't affect your virginity in any way.

My 12 year old son has a neighborhood friend (who spends alot of time at our house). He is a very nice boy, who doesn't have alot of friends because he can be "a pain in the neck" (according to my son) and we believe because of his hygiene. His odor is very offensive and we don't even like when he sits on the furniture in the house. He has been in the car with us on a few occasions and it is necessary to open the windows to cut some of the smell. Here's the really tough part... how do we handle this. I would like to pull him to the side and speak to him about taking showers and wearing clean clothes, but the other part of me thinks we should speak to his parents. The problem with this is his mom is not very "clean" either. What should I do??

Has your son noticed this too? If so, it might be easier for this boy to hear it from his friend, and not you. Either way it's a difficult situation. Since his parents are like this too, it's possible that he simply doesn't notice. Also, he's twelve and might be sweating more than he's ever been used to before and not know how to handle it. Try talking to his parents first, and see what happens.

If he sleeps over, offer to wash his clothes when he changes into pajamas. Mention 'you boys should shower after a long day!' or something similar. Good luck.

Okay well im going into my freshmann year and im really nervous. But still exited,So like does anything happen in freshmann year? when is homecomeing?? And is freshmann year like really hard?? what goes on someone tell me??

http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=507519

I wrote that myself awhile back & it's still pretty good, considering that my advice has matured a bit since then =]

Anyway, I'm going to be a junior in the fall, and it seems like my freshman year just happened yesterday. It seems so cliche, but it's true. The upperclassmen and sophomores are going to tease you, call you stupid freshmen, push you around, etc. Not everyone, but a lot will. Keep in mind that in a couple years you'll be doing the exact same thing to the class of 2014 ;]

Chances are your schedule will take some getting used to but you'll memorize it soon enough. Keep it in the front pocket of a binder, written on an index card. That way, you can casually glance down at it while you're walking if you forget what class you have next or something.

It's not as 'hard' as 'different'. Most teachers won't hound you for missing assignments. You pass it in, or get a zero. However, if you build up a good relationship with your teachers they'll be more willing to do favors for you, such as give you an extra day to complete something, or accept an assignment you were SURE you handed in last month. Most aren't as imtimidating as they seem and can be quite friendly.

As for homecoming, it's usually a weeklong event. It is for my school anyways. We have spirit days like Pajama or school color day, and there's a big football game. The week ends with homecoming dance. You'll hear about it, trust me. It usually happens in the fall.

Enjoy yourself =] You won't regret it.

hey hahah this might be a weird question but you know how if someone wants to know if a movie is good or not, they go to rottentomatoes.com ? is there a website like that for BOOKS? i know that there are sites like amazon and stuff where you can search for the book and see the rating, but is there ONE website with TONS of books like that? and it says like the grade / percent / stars it got?

http://www.allreaders.com/ looks pretty good.

only search advicenators.com

This search shows a lot more options.

Amazon.com and bn.com [Barnes and Noble's site] are excellent sources of reviews. However, I've noticed that a LOT of the books for teenagers are rated down unfairly. The "overprotective/strictly religious parents" demographic focuses on one part of a book in their reviews [for example, I just read the book Thirteen Reasons Why. One small part of that book mentions a girl getting raped at a party. There are probably reviews on Amazon, and other sites, that say this entire book makes rape seem like no big deal, blah blah blah] Regardless, most of the reviews are still good.

so i take birth control and i have been for over a year. last month i switched to a new brand of birth control pills and now i am on the inactive pills and my period has still not started. i was wondering what this could mean? also i am worried that i may be pregnant just because my boyfriend and i did not use a condom for the first time this month. anyway.. what could be the reason for me not starting my period?

You already told us the reason- you switched to a new brand. It typically takes a couple months for your body to adjust to the new hormones in the pill you're taking now.

It's highly unlikely that you're pregnant because birth control is very effective when taken properly, and you've been on it a long time. It's also normal to skip periods, and in some cases, your period doesn't start the first day of inactive pills. I'm on Yaz, and I don't get my period until the third or last inactive pill.

If you skip ths period entirely, take a pregnancy test. It'd be a waste of time and money to do one now though.

my mom called me from work b/c she saw a portion of a commercial mentioning a promotion at Kohl's...something involving $10 yadda yadda. does anyone know what I'm talking about? Fill me in please! We live in South Florida.

For every fifty dollars you spend, you get $10 in 'Kohl's Cash' that you can use in the week following the sale. Basically it's a free ten dollars but you can't use it right away.

They actually do it a lot, and at least in my area it's going on the same time as the 'early bird' and 'night owl' power hours sale. I'm guessing they have the same sort of sale wherever you live too.

Hello,
I went to a wedding last summer and at each placemat setting was a real ocean sand dollar and ribbon. I thought it looked quite unique and elegant.
Is that a common practice? Where can I get a large quantity of sand dollars for my upcoming June wedding? A friend mentioned eBay as a source for these.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Karen

so i have a neutrogena wave, and im just starting to use it...and i was wondering if it's good at clearing up acne? i dont have bad acne. just the ocasional red bump every now and then. and then my t zone is oily...and the rest of my skin is normal.
so...would it help clear up my acne and help prevent it?>

Cleansers are usually designed for that exact purpose. After using it for awhile you'll experience for yourself how it reacts with your skin.

i kno a lot of these questions are asked.. but my boyfriend just fingered me the other night and i feel like i should repay him n give him a handjob.. but i have no idea what to do.. i mean i understand the overall concept you have to go up and down firmly but not to firm.. but thats not helping me.. i'm too nervous.

We can't go into detail on here 'cause there's underage users and it's against the rules.

However Google will tell you everything you needed/wanted to know, and then some. Search something like 'how to give a handjob' and you'll find tons of information and techniques.

Anyway, you can always ask your boyfriend what he prefers when you're doing it; you'll be able to figure out pretty easily what he likes.

i dont know what make-up and clothes suit me best, help?

i have sort of long curly hair like shirley temple curls except sort of poofier and frizzier

sort of big nose, dark brown eyes, big lips and big eyelashes, sort of tan skin [medium skin]

small boobs, 5'2" skinny body about 105 lbs, longer legs smaller torso

Make-up I can definitely help you with because I have the same eye color & skintone. Dark brown and black eyeliner work best; if you're looking for a crazier color look for plum or perhaps dark green. Eyeshadows are pretty easy too, look for colors meant for brown eyes [it'll actually say so on some packages] as well as purple, pink, and white. If you want to use mascara at all, Maybelline Great Lash is the BEST. There's also a clear version that separates your lashes and keeps their shape.

With clothes, some thing you'll just have to try on because it's hard to tell if it'll look good or not. Since you're short [and also thin] narrow-leg jeans probably look really good on you. Superflare or whatever, they might make your legs look shorter than they are, while a slight flare or straight/skinny leg enlongates. Be grateful that you have small boobs, haha. You can wear tanks and halters without looking slutty or revealing! I don't know what kinds of tops/shirts you like, so all I can say here is buy the righ size. Anything too loose you could get 'lost' in, and since you're thin that'd be pretty easy.

so i've been on depo primivera or what ever its called since last november and you're supposed to get the shot every 11 or 12 weeks but i get my period about every 9 or 10 weeks Does this mean that the birth control isn't working?

http://www.depoprovera.com/vc-prospect-user.asp#5

After reading that I can conclude that what you're experiencing is completely normal, but to be totally sure I'd call your doctor [whoever you get the shot from]. Most likely, you'll just have to talk to a nurse, or whoever it is that answers the phone. If you get the shot from a gynecologist, the person who answers knows enough about birth control methods to answer questions like this =]
