can anyone tell me what food is not good for your dog (human food) this is what my dog get occasionaly:
~coke slushy
~banana~pretty much like almost all fruit except grapes
~ice cream
~pretzel
~honey
~bread
~parts of an oatmeal cookie
~baby carrots (every day)
~(celery (every day)
~Peanutbutter (little everyday with pills he takes for hip displasia)
~um, pretty much like partially almost everything i eat...but not exactaly EVERYTHING
Ps
my dog is very healthy, and not fat, i do not give him all of these things everyday, i just want to know what is harmful to him and whatnot. thanks :-]
Coke slushy has way too much sugar for a dog. Ice cream is the same thing. Not only does it have too much sugar, but a dog can't handle that much lactose(which is in dairy products). Pretzels are too salty. Even unsalted they aren't good. Honey is pure sugar... that should definately not be fed to a dog. Bread isn't good, cookies aren't good... Basically... you should feed your dog a balanced diet. The only way to correctly get a balanced diet is to feed it DOG food. A good dog food is science diet, iams, purina pro plan, or any prescription diets you get from your veterinarian.
If you want to feed your dog snacks, then give him fruit (except for grapes or raisens) or vegetables, (except for onions or garlic).
Especially since your dog has hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is worsened by any extra weight. So, even if you don't think your dog is overweight, feeding these things is bound to give your dog a few extra pounds. Not to mention that most owners see their dog as "healthy and not overweight", when, in reality, they don't know what a "healthy and not overweight dog" is actually supposed to look like. Your dog should have a clear waistline, and you should be able to clearly feel the ribs and just barely see them.
Your dog might not be overweight, but if you continue to feed it things like coke ice cream and honey, then he will definately be overweight sooner or later.

Well my tabby is getting old, she's healthy except she's fat haha, she is 13 and she's basically like a child to me. Lately I can't help but think about what I will do when she dies, I know I'll be devastated and I hate thinking about it. Basically I want to ask about cremating pets: is it costly? Do you just take the pet to a regular human crematory?
I would just bury her in the backyard next to my dog's grave, but I know I won't be living here much longer [I'm 18] and my parents will probably move soon after.
I also heard about compressing ashes into a diamond, I'm guessing that is really expensive though?
And I thought about getting her stuffed like the dog on Scrubs, but I'm sure that costs too much.
So can anyone tell me about cremation? Or other options, I just will want a good way to remember her and [this sounds dumb but] honor her. Personal experience would help a lot, kinda why I'm asking here in the first place. Thanks for any help.
You should call around to the local veterinarians and see what the do for their deceases patients. I work at a vet clinic who will take an ink paw print and make a card out of it with the animals name. People really enjoy and appreciate them. I've heard of other clinics who make clay paw prints. There are also kits that you can use at home to make a claw paw print of your pet. You can probably find them at a pet store.
As far as cremation. You need to bring her to the veterinarian to do so. Cremation costs range widely from vet clinic to vet clinic. There are two kinds of cremation, one usually called a group cremation, where you can't get your animals ashed back, and one called a private cremation where you get your animals ashes back. If you get your animals ashes back, they usually provide different choices of urnes and memorial plaques or what not, depending on the clinic and the crematory place. Many places will also let you cremate your cat's favorite toy or blanket with them. It does of course depend on whether it's flame retardant or plastic.
So, basically you should call around to your area clinics for info on this.

i am looking for a english bulldog puppy or a pug. ive tried looking for everywhere but have not succeeded at all so far. i am also looking for a somewhat cheap price because i am on a budget as well. if anyone has puppies in il please let me know thanks
19 f
The previous two people have answered some of my question for me.
Now let me tell you a little bit about English Bulldogs.
English bulldogs are a genetic nightmare. You know those cute little folds? They are great for yeast infections. Working at a vet clinic, I haven't seen an english bulldog yet who didn't have an ongoing yeast infection in his folds. I also haven't seen an english bulldog owner who hasn't had to spend thousands of dollars a year on various vet services. Like I said, they are a genetic nightmare, their tails can sometimes be so short that they'll dig into their skin, they're snouts are so short that they have various breathing problems, and sometimes as puppies need a surgery to fix things along with a spay or neuter (which is up to $300 by itself, with an extra few hundred to try to lessen their breathing problems)
Now let me tell you what english bulldog breeders go through. An english bull dog needs to be inseminated, because natural insemination almost never works. This is a hefty charge at the vet. And, an english bulldog always needs to have a c-section because the dogs head is so big that they can't make it through the birth canal. This is a charge of thousands.
Because of the vet bills that english bulldog owners need to pay, your going to spend 3,000 dollars or more where ever you go.
So, your looking for a cheap dog because your on a budget? I don't think an english bulldog is going to be the dog for you.
Oh, and by the way, pugs are like little bulldogs... they have a lot of the same problems, so their not the best route either.

My cat is about 7 years old and has developed a really bad sore on his back. It does not look like it was caused by a cat fight(I have three other cats.) It almost looks like a hole and like it is decaying. It is a greyish color underneath. It smells horrible as well. I noticed it today and I started packing it with triple antibiotic ointment. I can not afford to go to a vet right now(I have no money.) If anyone can help me please let me know. I can send you a picture of the sore if you want. I am very worried and if anyone has an idea of what this may be and how to treat it inexpensivly please let me know!! Thanks to anyone that reads this and attempts to help me.I live in phoenixville , pa and I don't know of any free clinics in the area
Is there any black skin? Not like, the cat is a black color, but is the skin usually a different color and it is turning black around it? Because that would mean that the skin around it is dead, in which case, your cat NEEDS the skin to be debrided, or cleaned off, or... basically, a veterinarian needs to take a scapel or scissors and cut off the bad skin and sew up the good skin and possibly leave a drain in so that the puss can get out.
Here's what you can do in the mean time. What your cat has is an abcess. An abcess is an infection, most commonly caused by a cat bite or scratch. The back is a very bad place to get one because the puss can't drain very well. It just sits in a pool on the cat's back.
Here's what you can do to help. Use warm water and scrub the area with a washcloth. I mean really scrub the area. You might want to wrap your cat in a towel and only have the sore show because this might hurt. But, you HAVE to be aggressive with it. While your scrubbing, squeeze everything out of it, then pore some more water on it. It you have something to squirt water into it, try that. That will help to clean it out. Also, if you have hair clippers, try to clip all of the hair away around it, but don't use scissors for the hair because your very likely to cut that cats fur if you do (I work at a vet clinic and most people who use scissors on their cats fur end up coming in to have a huge hole sutured up after they cut their cat). If your still not able to go to a vet clinic, then try hydrogen peroxide to get some of the puss out. Keep the area clean and dry and open to the air. Triple antibiotic ointment is really only going to help prevent infection and won't do much to get rid of a massive infection like what you've described.
Do this every chance you get. Use warm water to get the crusty's off, squeeze all the goo out, use warm water again to clean everything off, and pour hydrogen peroxide while squeezing all the goo out. Hydrogen peroxide isn't the best stuff to use, but besides going to a vet clinic, I have seen this work.
If you have any questions send me another question, or at least try to call a veterinary clinic and maybe they can give you advice over the phone.

my printer sometimes takes two pieces of paper at once and half of what im printing out is on the top of one page and the second half is on the bottom of the second page. does anyone know what im talking about? what am i doing wrong in putting the paper in the holder???
Try putting less paper in at a time. The paper could be a little too scrunched up, so when the printer tries to grab one, it grabs one and then the one that was too scrunched up to it goes along as well. At least it's always happened to me when I have a lot of paper in the printer.

My cat is a few years old now and in the past few weeks shes started to develop scabs on her ears and her nose area...and it seems like shes only doing so because she is scratching. My cat has always been a little obsessive about cleaning herself, I have other cats that aren't nearly as persistent as she is so maybe that has something to do with it?
My mom doesn't have the money to take her to the vet right now(which is the reason why we've been putting it off) and it doesn't seem like anything serious so we aren't TOO worried...I'm just a bit concerned so I've decided that until we have the money for a vet visit I'll do some home doctor work. I was going to cut her nails but she isn't the sort of cat who will let you just do that haha so I'm not sure what else I could do. She doesn't even seem that bothered by it...
I don't think its fleas because if it were there would be other areas in bad condition, and no symptoms really point to ear mites or mange or anything like that...so what could it be? What can I do to help(in the mean time)? Any over the counter cat meds that might help? A way to calm her down so I can cut her nails?! XD
Thanks in advance.
cutting her nails is a good idea, but it will only get rid of the symptoms, not the problem. There are no over the counter things that you can give her to calm her down for that. You need to either bring her to the vet and have them do it, or suck it up, scruff her, or perhaps wrap her in a towel and have one arm stick out at a time and have someone else clip the nails. It's not going to hurt her, only help her if you do this.
What this cat really needs is to go to the vet, I know you can't afford it right now, but there's really nothing any one else can tell you. Cat's don't simply scratch themselves bloody unless something is painful or extremely itchy in that area. Even an obsessively clean cat isn't going to scratch herself bloody. Have you looked in her ears? Is there any kind of discharge? Is there a smell? How are her teeth doing? Are they completely covered with tarter? Do her eyes have any kind of discharge coming from them?
Either that or she's been getting into fights. In that case, keep her indoors if she's an outdoor cat. Or keep her separated from the other cats, if they're the only cats she sees.
But, it's most likely a health thing.
Plus, if she isn't on any flea preventatives like frontline or revolution, then it could still be fleas. It's possible that the fleas only affect her badly enough to notice, and not the other cats. Fleas are bad around this time of year, so that's a likely cause.

My Kitten seems to like wet food better than dry food. My question is how can you get a cat to eat dry food. Because right now with our budget, we cant afford wet food. x.x Any advice?
You really shouldn't soak the food if milk. Milk is not good for cats as they can get sick. They aren't used to the high amount of lactose in cows milk, since their mother's milk doesn't have nearly as much lactose. It's even worse for puppies, so the first person who answered is wrong about that.
It's a good idea to use just plain water in the cats food. Try putting a little bit of water in her hard food and putting it in the microwave for a few seconds. Warming the food will make it tastier to cats.
You could also put half soft food and half hard food down for you cat. After a few days of that, start to increase the amount of hard food and decrease the amount of soft food, so, slowly she's only eating dry food.

Strange Question:
What does it mean when a cat winks at you? I was sitting in my room this morning, and then looked behind me and saw my cat. I was like "Where the hell did you come from?" and then she winked it me!
Anybody know what that signifies? I've Google searched it to no avail.
A cat "winking" is a calming signal. At the vet clinic that I work at, if there is a really frightened cat, they can sometimes be calmed down by staring at them and blinking slowly. To cats, blinking slowly means that they are comfortable and not going to attack. So, that's why you'll most likely see your cat "wink" when they're purring comfortably.

how long can parakeets go without food?
Parakeets should NEVER go without food. Their bodies are too small to handle even a couple of hours without food.
2 or 3 days... that would starve the poor things.

last night i had a very bad dream involving my boyfriend and my best friend. i caught them having sex in the shower. and of course i beat the hell out of her. i started crying and forgave him. which i know is stupid. because once a cheater always a cheater, right? why am i having these dreams. i heard that dreams come true most of the time. how can i prevent this? i would hate to lose him & my best friend. i love this guy so much, more then anything in the world. he means so much to me. i trust him with alot of things. but someone told me that he has been cheating on me within the past 2 months. i also got a phone call from a girl and told me that he had sex with her. i confronted him about it, but of course he said no. how do i know thats true or not? the friend ( she has a boyfriend )in my dream got kicked out of her house, and needed a place to stay, and her boyfriend is best friends with mine. and he asked my boyfriend if she can stay the night at his house. and he let her. i trust them both. but he has a reputation as a player. he says he has changed but how do i know?
16/f and 19/m - we been together for 7 months.
You had the dream because you were worried that he was cheating on you. That doesn't mean that just because you dreamed that he cheated on you, that it's really going to happen. But since you've been hearing that he's cheating on you, it's been on your mind, so he had a dream about it.
It doesn't mean anything except that it's the biggest thing on your mind right now.
So, to try to get it off your mind, get it out in the open and confront him about it. Tell him exactly how you feel and how it's been affecting you (such as the dream). You could also tell your friend about it.
Chances are, that you know deep down whether or not he's most likely cheating on you. I was cheated on by an ex that I was with for years, and I regret not waking up and paying attention to the cheating. Instead I lived with the jealousy and dreams almost every night (yes I dreamed about him cheating on me most night) So, it's up to you, if he is cheating, whether or not your going to put up with it, or are you going to be stronger than that?

I've seen this cat around my yard. I can garentee that it's not owned because I live in a small neighborhood, and everyone in it has atleast 2 dogs. The cat lives in a trash pile basicly that me and my family has colected over the year, and it's gotten bigger. Well I want to save this cat before winter comes, it will freze to death! My dogs, one I got was from a family that was broken up and the little dog had no where to go and my family took her in and we now call her Keylii. The other one is a lot bigger then Keylii who is a Tea-cup Pamerian, and his names Bear. Well they've bothc ome from familys that has had cats in the house so my dogs will get along with the cat, but how am I going to get it to come to me? I wana feed it, it's been getting into out garbadge and that can't be filling, But ive never had a cat before. I was thinking about louring it out by like canned tuna, I also have babyfood.. if cats eat that and dog food for little dogs if cats eat that too. But i need to think of the good of the animal. I dont wanna call Animal Services so don't give me that option because what if they put it down??? Then there'd be no point in saving it.. but what if it has a deseice and it bites me? I know im up-dated in my shots so Im not worried about that but if it bites me, and my Mom finds out she wont let if around the baby. I wanna save this cat. I know its homeless and letting it live where it is isnt an option. Neither is calling animal services. Im willing to take the chance of being biten out scratched, I just need some help on how to get the cat out of the pile of nothing.. please anyting is helpful and im sorry for giving u resrtictions but im not going to happy knowing its out there, or that its in the hands of other people who might hurt it.
Anything will be helpful tho.
There are a few things you should know first. I am a veterinary technician, and while I was going through school I worked with Feral cats. Feral cats are wild cats that have lived their entire lives outside, away from people and the comfort of homes. Most of them are just that... wild. They will never be cuddly or trusting.
But, some of them were actually quite nice and thankful that they were finally in a warm home. So, what I'm telling you is that there is a chance that you will never be able to get near this cat without being scratched or bitten.
Another thing that you mentioned is that you have all your shots so your not worried about being scratched or bitten. But, Rabies shots are not given to people unless they are in high risk jobs or areas, so you DO NOT have your rabies vaccine. Rabies is deadly. No one has lived from it without the vaccine. The vaccine consists or five to seven different shots given on different days that cost an average of 150-300 dollars each. And getting the shots before a bite are never paid for by insurance companies. So, you don't have ALL your shots, so keep that in mind before you go up to this cat on your own.
One option, and I know you don't want to hear this, but call the animal control and don't tell them where you live until you get some information out of them. Ask them what would happen to the cat, how could you safely catch the cat, whether you would be able to keep the cat, and anything else that's worrying you. If you don't tell them where you live, then there's no way for them to come and get the cat to put it down, if that's all they're going to do. But, chances are that they're going to want to help you more than they would want to hurt the cat. Most animal control officers actually would prefer to have a stray find a home than to have a stray put down.
Now, get a can of cat food, or chicken or beef flavored baby food and set it out for the cat. Put it where the cat can see it and come to it without coming out of hiding too much. Once the cat safely gets that, the next time, your can put the food a little closer to your door and farther away from it's safety shelter. Take small steps and the cat will eventually go to your door and even in your house.
Once you get the cat in your house, don't immediately try to pet it and pick it up, but try to judge whether it is nice enough. Let it come to you first.
I don't know how friendly this cat is, and it might go to you quickly or very very slowly, but don't rush it or you could get scratched or bitten. Aside from being very painful, a cat bite can result in rabies and infection.
You will also need to get it to the vet to get it's shots and possibly tested for FIV/FeLv, which is feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia.

i have had my hamster 1 day and she keeps making sneezing noises is this normal because of the smells around her or could it be something serious???
No, it's not really normal. It could be the wrong kind of bedding. I would say either bring her to a vet and get her checked out (and ask them about the kind of bedding to use) or else find someone else that knows a lot about hamster care. I wouldn't suggest going to the petstore that you bought her because they probably don't know, if they did, then you wouldn't have gotten a sick hamster from them.

Hi.
I just got a bird yesterday and he has started getting used to the living room (where we put him) His diet is fine and he plays with the toys we put in and goes to the bathrrom in his cage. My question is, how often should I change the newspaper at the bottom of the cage? My mom says every day so it doesn't stink up the whole house, but I think that every other day would be okay, because I can't smell anything. The guy at the pet store said that we have to play it by ear, or nose, but I don't smell anything and the paper isn't that gross. How often should I change the paper??
Thanks!!:-)
You don't want to just play it by nose. Even if you don't smell it, your bird might be living in it's own feces. So, if you see bird poop piling up, then clean it. It poo piles up after 1 day, then clean it daily, it's it's not that bad after 2 days, then clean it every other day.

Ok well...I have braces yes....but a while after i got them, my gums started swelling. they havnet gone down for a long time. i met my friend at the supermarket the other day and her gums arent like that. she hasnt been brushing as much as me though. and she only flosses a lot, two weeks before her orthodontist appointment. the orthodontist told me not to go to the dentist and get my teeth cleaned, but my friend told me, that he told her to go. if he ripping me off??? does he want me to have swollen gums? he said they might not go down all the way. and im really really really mad. he is supposed to be the best in my little country. he told me that hell try to get me done in oct. but then someone said dec. and he said dec. liar!!!!! my mom was right there. help!!!!!! what is he doing, and how can i get my gums down!?! i floss and brush.. thats all i know to do.
I don't think it's that he's lying to you. He probably was trying to get done by october, but it didn't work out, and he now thinks that december is going to be a more likely date. I also don't think he wants you to have swollen gums. Your gums are probably swollen because it's inevitable to get food stuck between your gums and your braces, the food will form tarter on your teeth which will irritate your gums and form gingivitits, which makes your gums swell. It's not because your not brushing your teeth and flossing enough, it's just inevitable to happen when you don't get your teeth regularly cleaned by an dentist. Your orthodontist probably isn't trying to hurt, but he thinks he knows as much as a dentist, when he doesn't. He works with braces, dentists are professionals with everything else. So, go to see a dentist, get your teeth cleaned, tell him that your gums are swollen and ask him what you can do about that.

part I:
okay well me and this AMAZING guy matt are going out. and i'm starting to like one of my ex's and a guy that i really liked last year that now likes me. matt told me to tell him if i ever started liking other guys. everyone says i shouldn't tell him but if we found out another way then it would be bad. i was about to tell him and then he started talking about how he thinks he is going to lose me because we have no classes together and he says i probably like 9043853 guys by now. so i don't want to break his heart =\. i have made him cry plenty of times for different reasons. i mean, i like him the best out of all of them and he makes me feel different when i'm around him. sooo should i tell him?
part II:
if i do tell him...i don't want to break up with him. so should i just ask him if we can just be friends with benefits and just open up our relationship so we can do stuff with other people? because i mean, i'm moving between christmas and next summer and i don't want to be with JUST him. like i am planning on hooking up for being with one of the other two guys i like. so what should i do??
any answer is appreciated!!
thank you :D
This guy is obviously more attatched to you than you are to him. If you ask to be "friends with benefits" then that will break his heart. He doesn't want to lose you, and he wont want to share you.
If you want to be with one of the two other guys, then just break up with him. Other wise you'll just be screwing with him emotions. That would be cruel.

what can dogs eat?
why not chocolate?
i see tv/movies where the owners just let the dog eat off their plate. isnt that bad?
Not to mention obesity, people food can cause disease such as pancreatitis in dogs. Especially pork products.
Chocolate is poisonous because of a chemical called theombromine in it. It causes vomiting, diarhea, and in later stages seizure and death. (it isn't because of an excess of caffeine like another person mentioned)
Things like onions and grapes and raisins cause renal (kidney) problems.
Carrots (uncooked) are a good treat to try.
Feed your dog a dog food. It doesn't have to be a dry dog food. Canned dog food as fine, it will just cause tarter to build up faster than if you fed your dog just dry food.
Science diet is an excellent brand, but it's rather expensive. Iams and purina pro plan are also pretty good, yet aren't quite as expensive and can be found at places like WalMart.

I just found out my cat has worms. I know my dad is going to Petsmart today to get some stuff so she can throw them all up.
But where did she get them? What do they do to her? What can we do to prevent it from happening again?
Hate to be a brat about this, but the first person who answered this question isn't completely right. Your cat could have a few different kind of worms. None of these worms can, or should be treated by anything that you buy at a pet store. Only a Veterinary clinic has the means to find out what kind of worm your cat has (roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm, or whips) and what drug to treat it. Your veterinarian will need a fecal sample, so that they can look at it under a microscope, and they will need to ask you a few questions about your cat to find out what it is that she has.
For example, if you cat is young and has never been wormed before, then she will most likely have roundworms, since roughly 95% of dogs and cats are born with roundworms (for reasons I won't explain, it would take too long). But, if you have an older cat who goes outside and hunts, then it is probably tapeworms that she has. Tapeworms don't simply come from fleas, and they are not transmitted from a flea bite. Tapeworms most likely come from your cat eating a mouse who was infected with tapeworms.
Plus, an antibiotic will not kill any kind of worm. The correct drug is called an antihelminthic. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not worms.
Now, once particular drug to PREVENT your cat from getting worms is revolution. Not only does revolution prevent fleas, but it also prevents some internal parasites such as roundworms and not to mention ear mites. Revolution doesn't prevent or kill tapeworms. Tapeworms are killed by drontal and cestex, and maybe others that I'm not aware of. So, you'll need to go to a Veterinary clinic to properly treat your cat.

in a couple days, im going on a 6 hour car ride, and i have to take my dog. hes been in the car a few times, but only for short periods of time. and whenever he goes for car rides, he pants and drools all over the place. is there anything i can get at a pet store or vets to give him to help with the car sickness?
thanks!
You should call your veterinarian and ask him/her what you could give. There are a couple of different choices, one being Dimenhydrinate, or dramamine, which is the same thing that people take for motion sickness. Whatever you do, don't get anything at a drug store because it won't be the correct dosage, and it's best not to get anything they might have at a pet store. It's safest to just go to your veterinarian.

Why would a cat start pooping next to the litter box instead of inside of it. I have two cats, but just the female is doing this.
I work at a vet clinic and have been taking classes to become a veterinary nurse.
In my disease class we learned that the number one reason for a cat to suddenly begin to go to the bathroom next to the litter box was because of anal gland problems. You should take her to the vet and see if they can help you. She is going outside the box because she's in pain.

I'll rate a pathetic little (1) to whoever advices me, "Tell your parents!"
Okay, first of all, my best friend gave me a kitten when her cat gave birth to a healthy litter of 4. The little kitten is a female and she is just SO cute.
My mother has allergies, so she won't let me have any cat or dog. My father hates the smell of any animal... so my sisters and I have been keeping it a secret. We have a babysitting job so we can buy cat food, litter box, blah blah... We loved having the first kitten so we got another 2. It went well for two weeks.
We've been keeping them in the backyard, hidden in the space under the deck.
They got fleas. What would be a good way to get rid of them besides going to the vet?? I think I need my parents to go to the vet so I don;t want to...
Plus, we haven't named this black kitty yet. Give me a good name for him, please! Thanks!!
Love y'all!!
If you decide to keep your kittens under a porch and hidden from your parents then your going to have three very under socialized mangy cats when they get older. They're living under a porch next to the cold dirt, of course their going to get fleas. Fleas can be deadly to tiny little kittens if they get enough. They could also get deadly diseases like feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus (like human aids), and of course, rabies. If you have money to buy them stuff, then take them to the vet yourself. You need to have them examined, see if their healthy or if they have already acquired one of those diseases, get them AT LEAST a distemper shot and a Rabies shot.
Frontline plus is a good flea treatment. It kills both fleas and ticks. But, advantage may work just as good if not better for fleas, yet it doesn't kill the ticks.
Please don't keep these poor kittens outside with out at least trying to make sure their safe from all of the infectious diseases.
Your also going to need to spay and neuter them, or you will eventually end up with 10 kittens, then 20, then thirty, and eventually up to 100 or more all living under your porch. Sound cute? No, they will all be mangy disgusting, sickly and feral (wild). I deal with feral cat communities often. They are neither cute or friendly. They would rather hide in a corner or bite your head off than ever be pet by you.
So, if your going to be mature enough to keep these kittens, then you need to give them the care that they need. They don't need kitty litter, they have the dirt under your porch. But they do need shots and vet care.
