how long can parakeets go without food?

Parakeets should NEVER go without food. Their bodies are too small to handle even a couple of hours without food.

2 or 3 days... that would starve the poor things.

It depends on how many birds you have in a cage. I have two in a cage, and I'd say the absolute longest is 3 days. Maybe only 2. I usually feed them every other day.
