We have had dogs for many years. Once in awhile they would get into chocolate. Just last week our dog got very sick. We called the vet, we thought she got into poison. While at the vet's office, she kept questioning us and finally I said "well, she got into a little chocolate..." The look on our vet's face was pure horror!! Turns out that is what made our dog so sick, even though this had happened in the past. She had chocolate toxicity. We nearly lost our dog. After several shots throughout the night to make her more comfortable, and two treatments of charcoal to soak up the damage, we were very lucky. It was scary, spare yourselves and KEEP CHOCOLATE OUT OF THE REACH OF YOUR DOGS, IT IS POISONOUS TO THEIR SYSTEMS. They are not designed to digest it, and it can KILL your dog. We learned our lesson and we were lucky.

Dogs eat dog food that is specially made for them.

Chocolate is just very very bad for dogs- never feed them that.

Yes, it's bad to feed your dogs people food. A lot of people food will make your dog become overweight, and unhealthy.

Not to mention obesity, people food can cause disease such as pancreatitis in dogs. Especially pork products.

Chocolate is poisonous because of a chemical called theombromine in it. It causes vomiting, diarhea, and in later stages seizure and death. (it isn't because of an excess of caffeine like another person mentioned)

Things like onions and grapes and raisins cause renal (kidney) problems.

Carrots (uncooked) are a good treat to try.

Feed your dog a dog food. It doesn't have to be a dry dog food. Canned dog food as fine, it will just cause tarter to build up faster than if you fed your dog just dry food.

Science diet is an excellent brand, but it's rather expensive. Iams and purina pro plan are also pretty good, yet aren't quite as expensive and can be found at places like WalMart.

dog food, of course. but chocolate is really bad for them. if a dog eats too much chocolate it could kill it. its okay to give a dog some meat or something off of your plate but not every day because then they will get use to eating it and start begging everytime you eat, which would be annoying. but as for harmful- only about anything chocolate. hope this helps!

MAK answered Tuesday August 21 2007, 5:08 pm:
Dogs can eat dry dog food, and if you absolutely have to feed them stuff from plates make sure that it is only veggies, and only if they aren't fried, in a sauce, or salty. Basicly the only veggies I would recommend feeding are ones that have been boiled, steamed, or baked. But if you are feeding dog food to your do already your dog doesn't really need anymore food.

Also, don't give your dog onions, chicken (unless you are 100% positive there are no bones), lamb (again, no bones), no salad, and no fruit.

And what you can feed your dog off the dinner plate: rice, beef (but no sauces, marinades, etc), potatoes (but not french fries).

If you have a dog, I'd feed it mainly dry dog food, because the canned food is generally unhealthy, and can be deadly.

Chocolate is harmful for dogs, and not for people, because chocolate contains lots of caffeine, and humans can endure the effects of caffeine, but since dogs have smaller bodies and such, the caffeine in chocolate and coffee makes their hearts beat to fast, leading to heart attacks.

I wouldn't recommend letting dogs eat table scraps, because they aren't used to "people food", so it's unhealthy for them, because it leads too obesity and other diseases.
