When Cat's Wink

Question Posted Saturday September 15 2007, 9:57 am

Strange Question:
What does it mean when a cat winks at you? I was sitting in my room this morning, and then looked behind me and saw my cat. I was like "Where the hell did you come from?" and then she winked it me!

Anybody know what that signifies? I've Google searched it to no avail.

A cat "winking" is a calming signal. At the vet clinic that I work at, if there is a really frightened cat, they can sometimes be calmed down by staring at them and blinking slowly. To cats, blinking slowly means that they are comfortable and not going to attack. So, that's why you'll most likely see your cat "wink" when they're purring comfortably.

It is pretty cool when animals wink at you, but it doesn't really mean anything. Most likely they have dust in their eye and they're just trying to get it out. Still, it feels like they're trying to communicate with you and it's pretty neat.

WOW my cat does this!!

He just looks at me with eyes full of admiration..and winks..or blinks at me.

I do find it adorable...( i think he just wants to win me over so I'll wind up feeding him whenever he likes! haha)

He does this after hes woken up, if i let him in, if im stroking him...

I just think theyre loving looks toards you to be honest.
Cats can understand what youre saying to them technically..they understand the tone of words..but they dont understand WHAT youre SAYING haha.

i could be totally wrong about tall of this, but when my cat does this its normally if im speaking in a soft tone towards him, petting him or if ive just done something for him! haha

Is this the same for your cat?

That's so cool! Every cat has a different personality. All cats that can wink will. It is probably your cat's way of responding to you when you say something with the tone that you did. Cats are pretty smart. Your cat probably knows that it scared you a little bit and was picking on you about it. :)
