advice

I really didnt know what to put this under so im sorry if its in the wrong catagory.

k well iv wanted to ask this qurestion for a while now but have been too hesitant. im 19 female if you need to know.

iv really been questioning religon lately. both my parents have their own religon, which i wont mention what it is because thats not the point. they feel very strong about it and believe in it. They think i should believe in it to because they think its the only way i will go to heaven or have a happy life etc.

when i was 4 i was continuously molestered to some random bastard,iv always been blamed for everything that happens within the family like arguements etc,i had a tumor which was cancerous,my bf proposed to me but found out that he only did it so he could get the green card etc (very long story).
my parents say that things happen to me because im not a good person i do bad things then bad things will happen to me so they assume im a bad pperson.this has really made me question things like what do i really believe in?i dont think i believe in my parent's religon.how do i know if this is the right religon to follow?i mean theres soo many religons out there which one is right?im so confused because i guess i want to believe in soemthing and im scared that if i dont believe in my parents religon then ill go to hell or bad things will happen to me in this life.its made me really depressed and emotional.i cant talk to my parents about it because they will be so angry (they think their religon is the way to go)but what if its not?i mean i was 4 years old for crying out loud how would i know what God is or what hell is etc and i still got molestered over and over again.am i really being punished?i just dont know what to think,im afaraid and i dont want to die not believing in anything :( but i dont want religon to be forced down my throat either.
I dont exactly know what im asking but what ever your thinking i guess id like to hear it.
Thank you, please please dont judge me.i cant help the way i think

You are not being punished. Your parents reaction is not atypical of many religious believers.

The fact is that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Similarly good things can happen to bad people. Its an unfortunate side of life. I feel very sorry for what you had to go through, but I am quite sure it had nothing to do with your religious inclinations.

The problem with religious argumentation is precisely what you describe above. Everything is twisted to fit their world view (and btw I also have religious relatives, so I have been through this first hand).

If something bad happens its because you dont beleive. If you do believe, and something bad happens, then its either the devil or because you dont believe enough. If you are evil and something good happens, they will pay in the after life. In other words, NOTHING can happen that is considered a counter argument.

Karl Popper, a renowned philospher once said (more or less, this is off memory) that for a theory to have any value it has to define the terms by which it can be disproven. I.e. it must be falsifiable.

Think about it, thats why people of different religions have killed each other for centuries.

Have a look at this short video about some of the statisical correlations with atheism. After all, if God was directly punishing us like your parents imply, you would expect atheists to be up a creek without a paddle...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T27kB4BjbEg

In the end whether one chooses to believe or not is a personal decision. However, do weigh in all the evidence, all the proof (or lack of it), and do not let yourself be intimidated or scared by anybody.

I am truly sorry about everything you had to go through, and I cannot say that I can even imagine what that was like. Clearly you have a great deal of personal strength to stand up for yourself after all that, and to question what you are being taught. I commend you on that.

I am not sure how helpful this answer was, but I hope you can use it for something.

Good luck.

London UK
ok so i do a sport course and i missed a few team sport sessions last week our sport is football... ok so
i need drills for
- passing
-heading
-shooting
-tackling
-crossing

also i have no idea what crossing is... will someone please expalin it step by step and why it is used.

thanks in advance!

Hey there,

The best way to answer this is with some useful links, since entire books have been written on this subject.

First off here is the wiki entry on crossing which is pretty good:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_(football)

(advicenators messes up this link for some reason, so you have to cut paste it)

Drills are a bit more complicated since most require several players and/ or equipment. I have found a few links that should be useful:

http://www.soccerdrills.com/
http://www.soccer-training-guide.com/soccer-drills.html
http://www.soccerxpert.com/drills.aspx

Good luck

how can i do this?

should i join a gym? and what excersizes do i do? i know "run" but how long?? like an hour on a treadmill?

and im changing my diet to be strict and healthy--fruits-veggies ect.

i want to lose 5 pounds a week
dont tell me its impossible i know its NOT

what other excersizes should i do and for how long?

thanks!

The answer below was the ultra-polite way to tell you the following:

The 5 pound a week target is unrealistic and outright unhealthy. Of course you can lose 5 pounds of something a week, it just wont be fat. It may be water at the beginning, and then muscle loss as you push your body deeper into starvation mode.

In regards to how much you should be losing, well that depends a bit on how overweight you are. The guidelines are usually 1- 2 pounds per week. This can be more if you happen to be a very obese adult.

Now, to your question...

The gym is a great idea. It is highly motivating, and you have access to far more equipment that you ever would at home.

I would recommend a mix of weights and cardio. Do weight training about 3 times per week. Remember to train all your muscle groups (legs, chest, back, shoulders, arms, abs), and focus on using free weight exercises. Also base your workouts around multiple joint movements like lunges, presses, rows, etc. They are better for you, more effective, and enable you to keep your workouts shorter.

Cardio you can do anywhere from 3- 6 times per week. It should be steady paced, to get all the heart healthy benefits, and for at least 20 mins. You can do one hour, but I agree with the answer below that it is a lot to start with. 30- 45 mins is a more realistic suggestion.

When it comes to cardio equipment, the stair machine is probably best. It strengthens your lower body more than any other equipment since it is a weight bearing exercise, while being far easier on your joints than the treadmill. Of course, the best exercise is the one you can actually stick to :)

Here is a link to a great forum where you can get help with all the specific details of your diet and workout routine (do not be afraid of its title, it is very much also just for people looking to drop some pounds):

http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/default.aspx

Good luck, and please... slow and steady wins the race here :)

I really like Iron Maiden. Any bands out there with similiar sound that i may not have heard of?

Best band in the world :)

I am not sure what you have heard of, so I will just list some of stuff I have that is roughly in the same genre: Judas Priest, Dio, Saxon, Running Wild, Helloween, Manowar, and Samson.

If you want more inspiration most bands that were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bear at least some similarity. The wikipedia entry has a list apparently:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Wave_of_British_Heavy_Metal

Hmmm, I see there are a few bands on there that are really far off the Maiden sound, but hopefully the list will be of some use to you.

Okay so I really want to be a size 2 (or at most a 5) by New Years! I am a size 9 right now. The problem is I hurt my knee and I cant do a lot of exercises like running. I cant really do anything that requires heavy exercise on my knee. So my question is... what exercises will truly help me lose INCHES on my waist, thighs and stomach. Please give some good answers, not lame ones. THanks

Exercise cannot reduce fat from any specific region of your body. Exercise can only burn calories, which can help you to create a calorie deficit (together with a sensible diet), which then leads to overall weight loss. Where the weight comes from is influenced by your genes rather than by what exercise you do.

So, it follows that the best exercise for weight loss is the one that burns the most calories (either directly, or by affecting your metabolism).

Cardio is usually the most important thing, but your options are a bit limited. I think swimming is the best option. I researched this a bit and other people with bad knees sometimes recommended the elliptical machine and possibly the ski machine as being easy on their joints. Of course, that would depend on how bad your knee is.

If you are willing and have the time, weight training is never a bad idea as a supplement to cardio. It preserves your muscle mass during weight loss, protects your metabolism, and strengthens your bones and ligaments. And of course, it burns a moderate amount of calories. Just be extra careful with your injury and make sure you ask which exercises you should not be doing.

Good luck.

I go to the gym about 3x a week for an hour each time. I do about 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical, and roam around for 30 minutes doing 20reps on random machines at random weights. Does anyone have any actual gym routines that have helped them tone up? (I don't want to pay for a trainer, I don't have that kind of money.)

I've recently cut out sodas and fast food, so I'm hoping for some results in the future. But I feel like I get no where whenever I go to the gym. Any advice is welcome. 17, female, 130lbs.

Hey there.

First of all, you need to define your goals just a little bit better. "Tone" is a word that I personally (as a personal trainer) absolutely detest, because it incorporates two separate entities: gaining muscle and losing fat.

The strategies for those two things are totally different. Moreover, girls are often under the impression that they have to train lightly or they will "bulk up". So you see a lot of wrong stuff. 1. you see a lot of high rep training (like you are doing), and 2. you see questionable advice like the one below (note how it mentions arms and lower body, but not any other areas- there is no logic behind that workout plan).

Fact is that girls have such a hard time gaining muscle that it takes serious work, and a great diet to put on even just a few pounds of lean weight. Not to mention that you wont wake up suddenly and be too large :)... you can see it coming.

Ok. So, to some real advice. Choose weight loss or muscle gain as your primary target. Since you are talking about cutting sodas and stuff, I will assume you will go for the former.

First off, start with weight lifting and then do cardio. This is really quite important. Of course you should warm up- but limit this to a few minutes.

You can take a protein shake after your weight training routine or after your cardio. Don't neglect your protein intake very soon after weight training or your body will happily break down your muscles.

Second, focus on a few free-weight, compound exercises. Free-weights mean dumbbells (DB) and barbells (BB). Machines are generally not as good for many reasons. Compound refers to multiple joint exercises e.g. presses, pulls etc (the opposite of compound is isolation). You can throw in a little isolation, but it should be secondary.

Then, lower your rep range to about 10- 12, which implies increasing the weight accordingly. Don't train to failure, stop when you can still do one or two reps.

Probably the best thing for you if you are new and dieting would be a full body routine (although splits are also ok). I would suggest two sets of exercises that hit all muscle groups (but with a different emphasis). We can call them Day 1 and Day 2. Then you alternate between them, leaving at least 1- 2 day's rest between weight lifting sessions- you can however do cardio more frequently.

Here is a sample routine. Unless otherwise noted below, for the compound exercises do 3 sets of 10- 12 and for the isolation do 2 sets of 10- 12 (I marked out which is which).

Day 1:
Squat (compound)
Incline DB press (compound)
Cable or BB or DB rows (compound)
Lying leg curl (isolation)
Tricep pushdowns (isolation)
BB curl or DB curl (isolation)
Sit-ups/ crunches 2 sets of about 20

Day 2
Lunges (compound)
Flat DB press (compound)
Shoulder press (DB or BB) (compound)
Cable pull down (compound)
Triceps pushdowns (isolation)
BB curl or DB curl (isolation)
Hyperextensions 2 sets of about 20

The routine is pretty balanced and hits all muscle groups. It is also fairly light.

Breaks between sets should be about 1 to 1.5 minutes.

Remember alternate between the two days, leaving at least one rest day in between. Mon- Wed- Fri is one common option, but do listen to your body if you have not recovered.

Pay special attention to your form and your breathing (exhale through the exertion phase- e.g. when you push in a bench press). Check the exercises online or ask for help, and be particularly careful with the form in your squats and lunges.

Here is a site where you can see all the exercises (googling the names also works of course):

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm

Remember, you cannot target fat loss to an area of your body, so don't add tons of superfluous isolation exercises. I say this just in case because most women at the gym tend to do this, and you see a lot of irrelevant arm work for example.

If you are losing weight, make sure you have a daily calorie deficit. However, intake good protein sources with each meal to preserve your lean weight. Protein shakes are great as post workout supplements and also before bed. You can do it with just food, but they do make life a lot easier.

Do this routine for 2 months or so and then re-assess where you are in regards to your goals.

Good luck.

5'2", 128-130lbs, 18

I'm in university, and I'm trying to find a time to exercise so I can lose some weight or avoid the freshmen 15.

I was wondering which is better to do: walking/jogging on a tread mill or walking/jogging outside at night. I don't think I can wake up to exercise. Besides that decision, it would be appreciated if someone could give me a decent amount of time that I should allocate for exercising.

Thank you~

There are advantages and disadvantages to both (safety issues aside).

Basically it depends very much where you can run. By this I am refering to both your surroundings and the actual surface. Hard surfaces such as concrete can be very hard on the joints. Similarly if you live in a place with a lot of pollution from traffic and so on, then there is certainly no benefit to running outside.

So, if you have a nice place outside where you can run on a soft surface like grass, then I would go with that. Otherwise use the treadmill.

In order to get the full cardiovascular benefits, you need at least 20 minutes at a moderate, steady pace. How much more you want to add on top of that is really up to you. Personally, when I am cutting, I prefer 45 minute cardios- but this is not neccessary to get good results. In the end it is your diet that will make or break your efforts.

Good luck.

Okay, I was an accident child, so I'm fourteen years old, and my Mom is 51. Anyways, she's been smoking since age fourteen, and she's addicted to cigarettes, but she won't confess it to me. Anyways, I'm going to be needing her for quite some more years, and besides, I want her in my life as long as possible. I hate the way it makes my clothes smell, and house. It's EMBARASSING. Purely. And I absolutely hate it, and I'm to the point where I'm constantly washing my clothes, and putting on body fragrences to run away from it. It's hurting her, and smoking is j ust a terrible thing. I want her to stop, and she's been telling me she would for the LONGEST time. And I'm sick of being let down. I'm to the point where I don't know what to turn to anymore. Any advice? I want to also go buy some "quit smoking" stuff from the store. But She can't chew gum, And i surely don't want to waste my $$$ on something that isn't going to help. Do you know any good producrs?

Hey there.

Its very hard to tell which anti smoking product might work. The reality is that probably all have a greater chance of not working. Some people respond to patches for example, others do not seem to take to them one bit.

One product a friend of mine is using now is a smokeless cigarrette- where you essentially suck on a nicotine dispenser of some kind. He says it helps him because it feels like smoking somewhat.

If anything that is what I would recommend (as an ex-smoker myself). However, no matter what, it will come down to your mom's determination to quit. I cannot emphasise how hard it is to stop smoking if you are hooked. Those things are so addictive both physically and psycologically. I have stopped now for 4- 5 years and I still get cravings. And I was a smoker for less than 10 years.

So, best thing you can do is to encourage her to pick a time when she feels very ready to stop. It can't be rushed and anything short of a full commitment will not work. Then have whatever products you choose ready for that time.

Good luck.

I keep seeing stuff about it on TV and on the internet. and all I wanna know is how does anyone know when the world is going to end? because in the bible it says that only god will know when the world is going to end? and why would people make stuff up about that? some people may believe it and drop out of school or quit there jobs. it just doesn't make sence. Do people get joy out of scaring people? PLEASE help! I need answers.

Of course its a load of nonsense.

This kind of stuff is as old as humanity. Sometimes there is outright evil intent- in the sense that someone is trying to profit from it in some way. Other times people genuinely believe in what they are saying. Either way, no good comes of it.

Mind you, I do not consider the bible to be one bit better. The fact that it is generally accepted in Western culture does not mean that it is more legitimate. Psychics, prophets, clergymen etc, all expect people to just blindly accept what they are saying without offering one ounce of proof to back it up. And that is something that one should always be critical of in my opinion.

I have no idea about this particular prediction. I remember the end of the world predicted for 2000, as well as numerous doomsday predictions made in the 80s.

Most of the psychics there were after personal publicity (and hence money).I think you will find that money and power are most often behind these things.

Best thing you can do is ignore it and discourage anyone you know from paying any attention to it.

how can you make your arms look bigger? mine are like stick thin, and honestly it loooks unhealthy. i've tried gaining weight many different ways; any kind of protein ive tried such as protein shakes and bars. nothing works. i do bicep curls, doesnt seem to work either. is there anything i can do??

Biceps curls will work. If they are not showing results now that is either because 1. you are not eating enough calories to gain weight or 2. you are not training heavy enough... or both.

First of all the human body needs a calorie surplus to put on weight. This is of course not an encouragement to eat a lot of crap, you should still eat healthy. But you need more calories than you burn in a day.

Second is the issue of rep range. If the weight you are using is light enough that you can do more than 10 reps per set, then it is too light. It will not be ideal for muscle growth. Try train with a weight where your reps naturally fall in the range of 8- 10, i.e. where you are 1 or 2 reps away from failure when you stop each set.

Next, incorporate triceps exercises as well. They not only help make your arms look better/ bigger, but it is always good to train opposing muscle groups.

Here is a video on how to perform a DB triceps extension:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/videos/2006/dumbbellonearmtricepsextension.wvx

So try doing 3 or 4 sets of 8- 10 reps 3 times per week (for both exercises) with at least one rest day between. Say Mon, Wed, Fri. Have a meal about 2 hours before training and take a protein shake right after training. Remember a daily calorie surplus.

As the person below said, training the whole body is always better for you than focusing on just a few muscle groups. However, this stuff will work if done right.

Good luck.

How much weight will i lose if i do crunches for an hour a day for a week?

The answer to this is identical to the swimming question.

However, I can add to this that crunches are not a great exercise for weight loss. You are after all just training one muscle. You therefore burn few calories and you do not get the health benefits of cardio workouts.

Also, it is always a good idea to train opposing muscle groups. So if you train your abs, you should train your lower back too. Otherwise undue focus on one muscle group can create posture issues (which can lead to fairly serious problems).

[view]

How much weight will i lose if i swim for 1 hour a day for a week?

That depends entirely on how much you eat.

Exercise is a great way to help you lose weight, but in the end it all boils down to your calorie balance. It is very possible (though not at all recommended) to be a couch potato and lose weight; similarly it is also possible to do hours of sports and gain weight.

Irrespective of what answers you may get, believe me that no one can answer this question.

ok so one of my friends thought of a good idea to get a guy to like me. he likes "bad girls" so the plan is to get a rumor started about me that i gave someone a bj and idk if i should do it or not. help me plllleeeeaaasssssssseeeee!

I agree with Razhie's answer. Its a bad idea.

It is also something that could stay with you for a very long time. Once a label is placed on someone, it is very hard to remove it. Think about the long term.

Apart from all this, I would also like to add that, in general, its not a great idea to hook up with someone by pretending to be too different than you are. The relationship is almost certainly doomed from the start. Eventually either he will figure out that you are a different person, or you will get sick and tired of playing the part. Though granted this is not as important as everything else that was mentioned thus far.

So don't do it. Very little good can come of it.

i wanna believe that wishes are real and can come true and i've found myself making alot of wishes lately. I'm finding myself getting into magic more and more lately. is that bad?

Well, "bad" is a very subjective term. Personally, I think its bad whenever anyone allows themselves to get seriously out of touch with reality.

If there was some evidence that magic existed I would say great, good for you. But considering that no supernatural phenomenon has ever come close to being proven, this kind of stuff becomes wishful thinking.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of wishful thinking mind you, but I think its bad if it starts to become your reality.

So, be careful and be critical. Keep in mind that when the human brain wants to believe something, almost any nonsense can be made to fit the theory. I am not saying that you do this, but it is very common for us as a species.

Good luck.

My Dad was talking about the Terminator movies and how much he likes them. I thought maybe I would buy them all for his birthday that is coming up and surprise him with those since I KNOW he doesn't own any of them, even the one with Arnold Schwarzenegger or whatever. So, how many Terminator movies are there and what are the titles so I can find them?

Just to resolve this question...

Yes there are 4 movies and one series (which ran for 2 seasons). The first 3 movies are with Arnold. Of all of them, nr 2 is generally regarded as the best and it was a very revolutionary movie in its day (in terms of effects, budget, etc). A truly epic movie as far as sci-fi is concerned.

The last one (nr 4) on the other hand was the most incredible garbage you could possibly have conceived- truly beyond words. You might just ask your dad if he liked it, because I know that for myself (as a big T. fan) I would not watch it again for all the tea in China.

As for where to find them, it should be easy both online or in a store. As mentioned below, Amazon is a definite possibility. You can also just google "buy terminator movies" if you want to compare prices etc.

Good luck.

I need to lose 10 lbs could be 8 or 7.. and I have 1 week to do so. how can i possibly do this. i will do whatever i need to do? i have school from 7-230 and im free from then on and completely free on this weekend too. what do i need to do? ill even listen to the wildest suggestions. thank you

Put simply, you can't. If you get anywhere near the lowest of your numbers it will be mostly water loss and muscle loss. It really is not a good idea to try it. At best you will get nothing out of it.

So if you do happen to get some misguided wild suggestions, please do not listen to them.

I can give you normal weight loss advice if you want. But that won't get you past 2 lbs/ week.

Sorry, but thats just the way it is.

I've fallen in love with old rock and metal, whilst steering away from most modern metal and rock I listen to.
I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend some bands such as Saxon, Iced Earth, Kiss, early Judas Priest, Helloween, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper, Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Ozzy, etc.
If it's a less known band, it's fine :)
Oh, and no Anthrax, I really aren't a fan of them.

Thanks!

Hey congratulations on your excellent taste in music :)

I think I might be just a tad heavier in my preference than you (I am more for Maiden/ Priest/ Sabbath than Kiss/ Motley Crue), but I will list a few bands I think should be ok.

Running Wild

Accept- Somewhere between AC/DC and heavy metal

Yngwie Malmsteen

Manowar- might be too heavy, but their earlier stuff (pre 1990) was not as hard.

Check out also the album Tatooed Millionaire by Bruce Dickinson (from his solo stuff).

Oh and there is also Samson (the band Bruce was in before Maiden). Not so easy to find though sometimes. Heres a random youtube vid if you are interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqEhoNUyELI

Hmmm thats all I can think of off the top of my head. You already covered most of the best stuff :)

hi, im from the UK, im sure that will help. Ok, im wondering, when Prince charles becomes king, the money will change yes? like, the coins, and the notes will have the queens face on it, and the current money with the queens face on it, will be taken away right? So if i were to keep the money with the queens face on it (when prince charles becomes king) will it increase on value? as there will be less of it circulating?

thanks :)

The thing is that for a coin or a banknote to have any significant value beyond what is written on it, it has to be REALLY rare. This will simply not happen with a national currency in your lifetime. It will probably never happen within any reasonably predictable amount of time.

So keep it as a souvenir, or to give to your children one day, but unfortunately it won't be a money maker :)
