depends on what u want. do you want to just look at something and put a little food in a bowl everyday or do you want to have something to play with and cuddle with and take on walks and clean up messes and give food and water and take to the vet and the groomer. dogs are a lot more work then a fish but they are way better and more fun to have. ]
Get a fish if you can let it survive for more then a few months then move up to a dog ]
Here's what I know:
Fish are a lot of work, but very difficult to connect with or really love. I had a goldfish when I was little - it lived 7 days. My roommate and I got a betta fish in college. He lived for about a year, and, for the most part, was just a decoration. Good thing about them is that they're low-maintenance as animals - their tanks, however, take some work.
Dogs are a LOT of maintenance. They're very demanding and needy. They're also loud. You can't leave them alone if you go on a trip, you have to take them for walks whenever they have to use the bathroom, and need a lot of exercise. They also tend to play rough, and really aren't great for apartment living unless they're quiet and well-trained. They are, however, loyal, loving, and trainable.
I have a cat. She's very low-maintenance. She's cuddly, uses her litterbox on her own, stretches her dry food out (she doesn't eat it all when I feed her). I can leave her kibble out in a bowl and she nibbles throughout the day. I work one full time job and one part time, so I'm not home often. For me, it's important to have a pet who loves me, who I can hug, who greets me when I walk through the door at the end of a long day, and most of all, can take care of herself in many ways.
I know a lot of people are allergic to cats, though, so if this isn't an option, I'd aim for a small dog. Pets are very personal and very individual, though. If you don't like cats, don't get one. If you don't like fish, don't get one. If you want a dog, go for it - just be prepared to take on a lot of responsibility.
Personally, I'd go with a cat. If I had to pick between a dog and a fish, I'd go with a dog, simply because you can't hug a fish.
***If you decide against a fish, PLEASE go to www.petfinder.com and search in your area/state. There are so many animals who need good, loving homes, and could be a perfect fit for you. I found my kitty on there, and she's the best thing that ever happened to me.
If you have any other questions, please ask!

You can't really compare dogs and fish when it comes to pets.
Fish are nice to look at, but for the little entertainment factor they provide, they're a lot of work. Tank cleaning, water drops, etc. They're also prone to dying for no apparent reason.
Dogs are a huge amount of responsibility, both financial and otherwise. Getting up in the middle of the night with your potty training puppy, training them, annual vet visits, shots, grooming. They're also a fantastic friend if you train them properly, and they usually live for at least 8 years unless there's an accident.
If you want something in between the two extremes, I might suggest one of my two small pets; hermit crabs or geckos.
Hermit crabs don't eat much, it's a pretty inexpensive set-up for them, and they're a ton of fun. You can hold them (which you can't do with a fish) and watch them climb around in their tank. They have little crab personalities that really become clear as you observe them.
Geckos are the same deal (small, inexpensive), but you usually need to feed them live crickets, which are a pain to buy and maintain in the house. Leopard geckos in particular are really friendly. Mine will curl up on me to watch television. ]
I've had both pets.
It really depends on what you're looking for.
Dogs live longer, are more fun, but are a huge commitment. Having a dog is almost like having a child; it's expensive, time-consuming, high-maintenance, etc.
Fish live shorter lives (some fish I had lived for a day, some for a year), are much easier to get bored of, and are overall cheaper to take care of. There are no vet visits, no medicines, no walks to go on. Cleaning the tank can be a pain in the ass (especially if you have a big tank).
Overall, I think fish are more of a decoration while dogs are an actual pet. You can bond better with a dog because you have to teach it, feed it, take care of it, etc. You spend more time together and as a result, pets like dogs and cats are more likely to be seen as members of the family. Fish are just..there.
If you have time to take care of a dog, get a dog. Otherwise, get a fish. ]
Dogs. My fish died when I brought it home from Wal-Mart. Plus, fish are really bad at communicating with you. Stick with a dog. ]
LOLZ, WELL I WOULD SAY DOG, MY REASONS:
FUNNER
HAPPIER
COOLER
SWEETER
WELCOMING
PROTECTIVE
ALMOST LIKE HUMAN

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, SOME OF THEM CAN SWIM ]
It depends on what type of pet you want. Dogs are good for some, fish are good for some. Which one would you prefer? Do you enough time on your hands for a dog? Or would a fish better suit you? ]
no pet if better, but a fish would be easier! if you want a pet to play with, try a dog, but if you dont, get a fish!
Hope i helped! if ya need anything else just drop it in the inbox!!

A dog a dog a dog a dog a dog a dog dog dog dog dog dog dog dogdogdogdogdogdogdogdogDOG!!!!!! Most definitely! Fish r boring! Dogs r the best! ]
a doggie definately..fish are no fun..you can actually play with a dog ,they make great companions,too..xO`Lexi ]
Both are excellent pets, I have had both. Depending on how much effort you want to put into having a pet and how long you want it to live will decide which is better. I would personally recammend the dog, because you can play with them, and it will teach you more about responsibilty. But only if you have time, if not I would get a fish. Both need time spent on them, just dogs need more Loving =). But if you do get a dog, be sure to get it when its a puppy! Thats always fun! ]
i think that a dog is a way better pet beacuse it is more loyal ...it comes when its called and it lives longer then a fish ...even tho fish are low matinance if u want a pet u can have for a while then a dog is ur answer!
luv:katexoxoxoxo ]
depends on how much time you have. Fish are very low maintenance. All you have to do is be careful about how much you feed them. Dogs take time, quite a bit of it. And they bark. And they bite small children on occasion (sorry, I have issues with that). But some dogs are quite nice.
As I said, it's all about how much time you have. I personally would go for the fish, but as I said, I'm biased.
If you can't decide based on maintenance time, think about how attatched you want to get to your pet and how your house/apartment/living space would be for a dog. Think about your friends (do they have allergies?) and other pets, if you have any. ]
if u want a pet 2 dont wanna have 2 take very much care of and dont want it 2 be a haasle...get a fish...if ur ready 2 have a full resonsibility...get a dog but u have 2 walk him...pick up poop...and pay a lot of attention 2 him...or her :].... ]
well girst you have to consider if you can spend time with a dog, if not then u choose a dag. Also if you have enough room, well i hope you can decide now. have Fun ,:-) Amy Belle
Ps. if you r getting a dog and dont know what kind 2 get take a tes.
PSS. i have a dog and a fish . ]
A fish if you dont like to pay much attention and dog is you love all the attention and love to give attention! If you are responsible then the dog is the pet to have. Thats a random question... but cool!! xo trix ]
i have to say that i think a dog is better because they can do so much more than a fish. they can interact with you. as for a fish, what can you do with it? stare at it i suppose, so if you get a fish, get a pretty one! :0) ]
ugh i hate dogs..
i like fishies!!! ]
dog!! u cant pet a fish... but theyre pretty! lol :) ]
fish are boring get a dog because they are very playful and so cute ]
A dog is way cooler! ]
There is no such thing as a "better" pet. Sure, you might like one more, (as I like dogs more than fish) but it all depends on your situation.
Are you away from home alot? Then a fish is for you! Dogs require a lot more attention and love than a fish, but fish can be fun also.
And why limit yourself to a dog or fish? There are plenty of other choices out there! (Just make sure you love your pet unconditionaly! :) ) ]
A fish wins if you: are never home and appreciate a fairly short life-span
A Dog wins in every other conceivable way. ]
A DOG IS BETTER! but they require more love, patience and a strong stomach { in case you live in a are where you might have to pick up "poop" {lol} but.... out of that you end up with a pet that willll always love and care for you. i've had my dog for 3 years and I honestly dont know what i'd do without her. ]
well, if you have a busy lifestyle, a dog is not for you. if u have time on your hands, and don't mind commitment then dogs are great! choose one depending on you lifestyle. ]
I don't know how to take care of fish, but i do know how to take care of dogs...so i would say dog...but if i had to pick for you, i wouldn't know.
read a book about how to take care of [fish] or [dog]. then ask youreself which one if more easy to take care of or if have even have enough time to take care of it. ]
dog. they are more of a companion for people when they are sad, they actually resopne by liking you or hopping on your lap.
( if you are getting a dog, get a small one or a puppy ) ]
I love Dogs. So I would say dogs are better than fish
Love Apple ]
A fish wouldn't need as much care as a dog. But you can do a lot more with a dog. All you can do with a fish is wathc it swim. Personally if I was getting a pet i'd go with a cat. I know you aren't looking at a cat but one would make a good pet. ]
Definetly a dog. Fishes all you can do it watch them but a dog you can play with and love. ]
if you've never had a pet, go for the fish. If you like fish, go for the fish. Dogs are smelly. They're stupid and they're mean and evil. Fish are really awesome. You could get a frog too. They have really long lives. I have one that's 5 years old. ]
I would rather get a dog. I have two, actually. A fish is just there, you can't play with a fish or teach it tricks. If you want a low-matinence pet, then a fish is a pet for you. Dogs require much more, however. A dog requires feeding 1-2 times a day (depending on age), it should get frequent exercise such as going for walks, they require much love and care, and you must teach it to behave, so it obeys you. You don't want a dog to think that it is the king of the house. It won't listen to you. If you want a puppy, you also must toilet train it, unless you like the smell of pee all over your carpets.
Good Luck - QBillion ]
Ok, my opinion is to get a dog. a fish is just there, swimming aroung but a dog gives you great pleasure and is always there for you. And a fish is cheap get one for $2.00 and get a dog. So thats what I think you should do, now it's up to you. ]
weell, if you want a pet that you can do stuff with AND if you have enough time and stay at home enough, a dog would be better. if you are always away and love watching an animal swim back and forth back and forth, an fish would be better. but seriously, if you are usually gone during the day but want a fun pet, get a cat. but dont get a dog if you dont have a LOT of free time and a LOT of room. ]
