Q: Recently, I've been having weird sleeping issues. I'm having trouble, getting restless, and mostly I feel like there's someone or something else in the room with me and I'm a really paranoid person, so I'm also afraid of falling asleep... And my dog acts a bit weird too, like he can't stand being in here. It's kind of freaking me out, and I know it's irrational thinking. Can anyone help me?
Also, I don't know if it helps, but I just got off a perscription drug to help me sleep called xanax, but I went off it because it was making me a bit depressed and miserable... So, could it be because I quit taking the medication?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Absolutely. Xanax is habit-forming, meaning that you can gain a dependence upon it to fall asleep. That's why doctors will usually try to wean you off of it, giving you incrementally smaller amounts over a course of weeks.
You're probably just agitated and sleepless. It doesn't mean you're going crazy. This is something you should discuss with your doctor, though. They may have a better option for a sleep aid for you.

Q: I'm asking this question for my friend. He is 20 years old.
His roommate (also 20) and him are re-locating to a new apartment and can't decide who gets which bedroom. Each bedroom is the same size. The only difference is that one has an attached bathroom. The room without the attached bathroom has one literally five feet away, outside of the room.
Of course, they both want the room with the attached bathroom.
My friend actively went apartment searching and found the place while the other casually looked for places online. Do you think my friend deserves to get the room of his choice since he found the place? Should he pay more money for this room? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

In a house that I rented with some guys, we split it up by dollar amount. The price was split 5 ways, and the guy with the biggest bedroom paid 50 a month more than the rest of us. We drew names to figure out who got it.
If your friend claims the special room just because he found it, don't expect the other guy to hang around for another year! It's worth it to play fair and square.

I think you need to check for a gas leak in your general area. Apparently everyone in your life is crying uncontrollably. This is what, the fifteenth question you've asked about people sobbing in your presence?
Sometimes people cry. You'll just make things worse if you don't let them get it out of their systems. Let them know you'll be there if they need you, then leave them to calm themselves down. You can't force it.

Q: I'm doing a paper on the latest diet craze, so I just need some opinions :)
Lately, I have been hearing a lot about the new diet craze, hCG diet. I personally know a few people who have done it and saw great results, fast. However, they were only on the diet for a few weeks. I know that there are injections and drops that people take and I'm not sure if it's hormones or what..
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has heard of this new diet, tried it, recommends it, opinions, etc.?
Thank you :)

I know some people who are on it. They swear by it, but that's probably because they're shelling out the big bucks for it.
Here's how it works: you take some hormone drops (or injections) that are super expensive and don't do anything for you. At the same time, you go on their diet, which is a severely calorie restricted regimen. You'll be eating about 500 calories a day or less. Then you lose crazy amounts of weight, because you're starving your body. And when you go off, you're going to gain a lot of weight back because your metabolism is shot.
As always, the best way to lose is to eat less, exercise moderately and cut out the junk.

Q: Hey :)
okay. I have been with my wonderful boyfriend for 2 months now. We are very close but i am still a virgin as i don't want to rush things. He has admitted to me that he wants to go further but is very caring and patient :) recently we got into a conversation about what would happen if i ever got pregnant, and when i asked him if he would stand by me, i was shocked at how hesitant he was to reply. He came out with things like, 'i'd probably jump off a cliff' and 'i don't know'.
I think it's an honourable thing for a man to stick by his baby's mama and even though i'm not planning on losing my virginity or getting pregnant any time soon, it still bums me out to hear him say that :( should i let it pass as a joke or doubt his character?

Hey, give him some credit for being honest. You don't mention how old you are, but I'm going to guess somewhere under 20 based on the site demographic.
Most guys aren't ready to deal with the consequences of pregnancy, but since it almost never comes up in conversation they just skim over that. Then when the girl gets pregnant, they bolt.
You've been together 2 months. If you were to get pregnant, that would mean spending a lifetime together in some way, whether the relationship continues or you're just seeing him when you drop off the kid. That's a pretty big commitment to give when you haven't been together that long.
So keep waiting until his answer is "Yes, I would stand by you." That way, you know that if you get in a fix you wouldn't be in it alone.

Q: I HATE my job so much! It's not the people or anything I just hate the fact that I'm not free to do what I want and I have to do what they tell me to. I'm 15 and my parents want me to work I've talked to them and they said I better not quit what can I do? I hate it so much that it makes my stomach hurt and I sometimes even cry when I go on break and stuff. I worked last summer and made it through the season but I dont want to do another season!

The nerve of them... expecting you to do what they tell you to just because they're paying you money.
;)
You're not going to like my advice.
Suck it up, buttercup. We all have to work eventually, and sometimes that means doing things you don't want to do. I don't like every part of my job, but I do all of it because I am an adult and I need the money. Ask your parents: I bet they don't like a good chunk of what they do at work. You're learning an essential skill right now. You're learning how to deal with doing something you don't enjoy because it's what you have to do. That's called being responsible. Your parents are absolutely right in making you keep your job.
Find ways to make it fun. Set goals for yourself. Make friends. Try to make people smile. It goes a long way.

Is your period on its way? Because this sounds a whole lot like PMS symptoms. Bloating, fatigue, eating... that's what I deal with starting about 2 weeks to a week before mine.
If you haven't had sex, then there's really no way you can be pregnant. I wouldn't bother with a pregnancy test. If it keeps up, or if the symptoms really start to worry you, go to see a doctor.

Q: Hello I am a 16 year old male and I recently applied to a McDonalds near where I live. The application made me really sad at the sort of questions they asked and I just feel like there is a much better way I could be spending my time that mindlessly working at McDonalds. My parents want me to get a summer job but I do not really want to work here. Am I being too picky or snobbish. I get straight As and I don't know it just seems like a waste of my time. Writing this now it seems elitist but it is how I feel. Any advice on this matter would help. Be critical of me too it will only help me.

You're being short-sighted, but not necessarily snobby.
Yes, working at McDonald's isn't exactly the most fun, fulfilling thing in the world. You're not going to take the world by storm with your fry-cooking skills. You will gain a lot from experience with them, though. And some money, which is never a bad thing.
You gain what I call "resume experience". It will show that you can work for someone for a period of time. Basically, this shows future employers (even for your dream career) that you have a decent work ethic, that you can show up on time and stick to your shifts. Basic stuff, but it gets that question out of the way.
Also, McDonald's can be a fantastic place for a student to work. They're flexible with school schedules (so you can work a few shifts a week during school) and they have scholarships for their employees to apply for.
Ask any successful adult: chances are, they've worked a lousy minimum wage job to get where they are now.

Wow. Please, please do not go to a payday loan place! They charge insane interest rates (from 200% to 1000% or more... for reference, a typical credit card charges up to 30%) You can get into really nasty credit spirals by borrowing against future earnings. You borrow the money for the ticket. Next paycheck, you pay it back plus interest. But then you're $150 behind for next month, so you need to borrow against the next month's paycheck. See where I'm going? It's not a reasonable option.
It's the beginning of the summer. There are lots of jobs for a young person to do around this time of year, and it wouldn't take long to save up $100. Babysitting rates are usually about $5-$10 per hour. You can start a lawn mowing business, or a poop-scooping business, or walk dogs or wash cars. If you were to post flyers advertising that you're willing to do outdoor chores for a fee, I bet you'd have lots of takers... spring chores are tough, and nobody wants to do it. All it would take is 10-20 jobs at $5 or $10 a piece, and you'd be on your way!

Q: 19/f
Lately I've been very tired, kinda slow with my thinking, and as of recently had diarrhea, headaches, nausea to the point of gagging, and sometimes terrible stomach pain. I didn't think much of it til a coworker asked if I'm pregnant. I said no, cuz I had my period a week and a half ago... but now that I think about it, my period was 5 days earlier than expected. It lasted five days, though, and wasn't "light." Also, I've been on birth control for 3 months, and the only time I took a pill late was AFTER the aformentioned period. So... just curious if I might possibly be expecting or just have a bug... and if I take a home pregnancy test, when would be the best time?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
If you're going to take a home pregnancy test, the best time is within 5 days before your next period. I know it feels like forever to wait, but that's how it is.
I would suggest that you go see a doctor. I went in with exactly the same symptoms PLUS a late period, and it turns out I was having a gallbladder attack because of a greasy meal I'd eaten a couple days before. A doctor will be able to rule out anything other than pregnancy at this point in time.

Q: im a 16 yearold boy, and there are alot of girls at my school who were tops that are too short, and it shows off their stomach/hips. For some reason i have some kind of obsession with girls' hips, and when they show them off like that i get turned on as hell. i dont even get turned on by their breasts or ass, but whenever i see like a nice, tanned, waist line, i get so damn horny. Is this considered normal? A fetish>?

You're a 16 year old guy. EVERYTHING will make you horny at this point.
You're at an age where your hormones are going insane. Once things calm down a little (your late teens, early 20s) you'll find that you won't be as easily worked up.
It's normal to have a turn-on that isn't directly related to erogenous zones. Don't worry.

Q: im a guy in high- school. And before you read this, im letting you know that this is a serious question.
I know you might think im weird, but me and my friends made a bet on the last NBA playoffs game. And i lost, and i bet against 3 of my guy friends. So i lost.
Now, they are making me do something....
Theres like this really hot girl in my class, shes a rich girl, spoiled, cheerleader, hot, big tits and ass, fake tan, you know how it is. Anyways, i dont even know her at all. Ive never even spoken to her, but i stare at her ass all the time.
Anyways, my friend that i lost the bet to is making me slap her in the face randomly in class when nobody is looking. Im being serious. My friend doesnt like her , from some other reason, and he wants me to slap her. Not punch her in the face or kick her or anything, but just smack her like upside the head. Or he offered for me to grab her ass when nobody is looking. Hes making me do either one since i lost the best.
The thing is, even though it sounds messed up for a friend to make me do that, i kinda WANT to do it haha.
What should i do?

Both can get you arrested, expelled or suspended, at the very least.
Schools these days have a "no tolerance" policy. That means that any assault is going to be punished, no matter how mild.
Grabbing her butt would qualify as sexual assault, and if she decides to press charges, you could be charged as a sex offender. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true.
Tell your friend you'll do something that won't risk your academic career.

Q: I love animals more than any normal person should and i want a career working with them, i want it to pay good money so i can afford a place with enough room for my own animals. I have done nothing but research my whole life, and know a lot about exotic, and domestic animals and pets. I want a job which leaves me time to spend with my own animals. I was thinking about being an exotic animal vet. But where i want to live is more farm land, so should i become a live stock vet? Im open to ideas on good career choices.

I would strongly suggest trying to volunteer or work at a veterinary clinic before making a decision. I worked at one for a few years back in high school, and it was an eye-opener.
One of the vets once asked me "Why do you want to be a vet?", followed shortly by "If it's because you love animals, don't do it."
Why is this?
You don't get to play with fluffy puppies and kitties all day. The puppies and kitties think you're evil incarnate. They hate you. You're the one probing them, sticking them with needles and doing other unpleasant things. They're going to scratch, bite, growl, hiss and run away from you.
You're going to end up with any number of bodily fluids on you. When the above vet was asking the question, it was immediately after a dog had expressed its anal glands... in her face and hair. It's a dirty, tiring, emotionally draining and often unrewarding job. And it doesn't pay that phenomenally. You go to university, then post-grad, then you make about 60 grand a year. Not bad, but not the very best. Sometimes you have to put down animals who don't really need it. You have to be able to deal with surgery, with crying owners, with people who don't take care of their pets. There's a lot involved.
An exotic animal vet may make more, but there's a limit as to where you can work and how many openings there are. There aren't a whole lot of tigers kicking around the cities of Europe or North America. You'd probably end up working at a zoo, so you'd be around an urban center.
If you want time at home, you can open your own veterinary practice, but that takes a lot of start-up capital. Otherwise, you're going to have to deal with whatever hours the clinic you work for sets.
If you're planning on being a livestock vet, be prepared for some late night calls (birthing happens whether it's business hours or not), some gross jobs, some risk and a lot of hard, dirty work.
I'm not trying to discourage you by any means. It's just easy to get caught up in this image of veterinary work as a glamorous, animal loving job. If you just want to enjoy animals, you're likely best off just owning them and having a big fur family. If you are truly fascinated by the inner workings of their bodies, go for it!

Q: Can you skip your period and not be pregnant? In other words, can your period skip a month without being pregnant, or is the only explanation for a missed period pregnancy?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Not at all. You can skip a period because you haven't quite regulated yet (if you're in the first 10 years of your period, this is pretty common), you can skip it because of medical conditions, you can skip it because you're sick, because you're stressed, because you're worried you might be pregnant, because the wind's blowing the wrong way (okay, maybe that's exaggerating a little).
Basically, menstruation is a fickle thing. You can go for 12 years being perfectly regular then all of a sudden skip one and fall right back in line after. However, you may want to check in with your doctor/gynecologist to make sure there isn't an underlying condition.

Q: To quickly summarize, I have been with my boyfriend for almost 9 months. We live together and we're in our early twenties. I take care of him constantly, and help organize him as he has ADHD, and effectively play his therapist, and have to accept it when he prioritizes other things over my needs. I love him very much, and do not doubt how much he loves me, but certainly he is immature, and can be selfish. But thats not the point of my question. My birthday is on Saturday, we've been planning it and talking about it for weeks. He already gave me my present - he made a bench to store shoes under (he really wanted one. I expressed no interest in one, but maybe he thinks I wanted one too) so I have shown appreciation for that. He kept talking about planning the day for us, and I have a dinner set up with friends and him in the evening. He informs me yesterday, 3 days before my birthday that he hasnt gotten it taken care of at work after all and that he'll probably be working 1-9 on my birthday. I personally believe, as its a job like any other, that he could have switched shifts or gotten it off with relative ease, but clearly has not prioritized doing so. Also, he gets irritated if I show that I'm sad about it. He also wants to spend the rest of the week in on his computer, so I suppose we wont be celebrating any other day either. Am I allowed to feel as I do? After everything hes put me through lately I at least needed him to show some interest in making my birthday special... :(

You're both being unreasonable.
He's being unreasonable because he gets mad at you for being upset that he puts himself in front of you consistently.
You're being unreasonable because you've basically told him over and over that it's okay for him to do that, then expecting him to behave differently.
Stop treating him like he's made of sugar. He won't melt or crumble. Stop playing therapist and stop playing mommy. Neither role is healthy when you're his girlfriend. Last I checked, having ADHD doesn't mean that you are medically required to get your own way all the time.
I know it's hard to step back and let a loved one fall a little bit. My fiance had to live with me through a terrible mental health crisis. But you know what? I only started to get better once he stopped rescuing me. Stop planning things for him. Stop organizing him. If he misses a shift, or an event or whatever, it's his fault and he'll learn to deal with it.
You have every right to be frustrated and upset. You didn't sign on in this relationship to be his mother. He should be treating you like his girlfriend, not his datebook. So start getting mad at him when he's a jerk. Start with this weekend. Let him know that things have got to change and set consequences if they don't. Yes, you may have to leave him. He has to learn that his behaviours have consequences. You haven't given him any yet. Start treating him like the adult he is, and I guarantee you he'll man up.

Nobody is going to advise you to commit suicide. We're all here to help you in the best way possible: that doesn't include advice on ending your life.
It's awful that your family doesn't like you, but you can't let it rule your life. My mother once told me that you do things because of people or in spite of people. So you can let your bad relationship with your family make you miserable and want to end your life, or you can live a fabulous, long, healthy, happy life even though they didn't do anything to help you. Life is what you make it.
I'm not just some self-righteous advice-giver. I don't sit from my high horse and dole out well-meant bullshit. I've been there. I've tried to kill myself a few times. I deal with a lot of shit, even today. I'm the last person who will tell you that life is easy and full of sunshine and puppies. But it is worth living.
You've got to get this under control. If you can't think of even one thing to live for, start thinking harder. Or make something. Get a pet. They love unconditionally. Start volunteering, or take a class. Make connections. Reach out to someone. Check out 1000awesomethings.com for some inspiration. There are millions of things worth living for in this world.
Seek counselling if you can. Someone who can help you to work through your problems. You may find that you need antidepressants to get you out of the pit you're in. There are ways to deal with anything that you encounter in your life. It's just a matter of having the right coping skills.

You should love the one who deserves it.
The one who treats you well, is smart and funny and kind and makes you happy. The one who loves you back. The one who makes you giddy and happy.
It doesn't matter so much how they look, or what sports they do. All that can change. What matters is who they are on the inside.

My Personal Forum
My name is Amanda and I'm 26 years old. I'm currently studying electrical engineering. Armed with a fairly odd sense of humour and a sunny outlook on life, I'll take on just about anything. I'm also cussedly stubborn, which has its ups and downs. Things get tough sometimes, and I've never been one to run from it.
In my last 8 years with Advicenators, I've gone from honours student to failing out of university (and getting back on top again!), from single to married, from tenant to homeowner.
Until lately, I have been struggling with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and OCD, which had basically ruined my life and taken just about everything from me. I'm thankful every day for every experience I've had because of this ordeal, because it's helped to make me who I am today. Things like that really make you appreciate what you do have. Now that I'm back in work and school and starting to become myself again, I couldn't be happier. I credit Advicenators with saving my life back when I was a teenager, which is a big part of why I'm still here.
I won't necessarily give you the answers you want to hear, but I'll always be honest and do my best to help.
