Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!
A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.
BU 2014 :)
wicked awesome conversations
^my forum, liven it up a little?
advice
I had sex last friday, when do you recommend I take a test?
Two weeks after your missed period, one if you're totally regular. Doing it any sooner would be a waste of your money. This is, of course, assuming that you even have a reason to be worried. If you used protection properly you should be fine.

I just started taking the pill about a month ago and I was wondering if it can affect your mood? I've been pretty sad and stressed lately..but it comes and goes. I just started college so I don't know whether to blame this major change or the pill..or probably some of both. Any insight would be helpful! thanks
It's possible. Some people have horrible reactions to certain hormones. Give it three pill packs before you decide if it's good for you (unless, of course, these thoughts are suicidal, or something serious like that).
It is also possibly in your head, because you're thinking of the possibility of it being the pill. Try to forget that the pill could affect your mood (without forgetting to take it, haha) and see how you feel. In mnay cases, your mood can actually improve!

okay so i was put on birthcontrol last tuesday. but i was on my period so my doctor told me to take two that day and then the next day take one in the morning and the next one at night then take it reguraly! so on friday my boyfriend and i had sex and he cumed not in me but the second time like hours later he did in me. well you can obviously know my question.! im just worried a bit or will we be okay?
According to the info packet, it takes a week to start working. My DOCTOR told me to wait at least a month before relying on it for protection. Others have been told three, to let it totally get regulated with your body's rhythm. It's weird how he told you to take it, but hey, he's your doctor so maybe your situation was different.
So, if you're indeed taking it religiously at the same time every day, your chances of being pregnant are low. If you miss a period, wait two weeks (because your still new to the pill), then take a pregnancy test and go from there. In the meantime, continue taking your pills correctly. And not to sound like your mom or anything, but you should be using a backup method as well (condoms, spermicide) to be more protected. And condoms are a good idea anyways.
Hope everything works out for you :]

so i know its still its still possible for a woman to get her period if she's pregnant and that it just might be delayed. But does the period still come with cramps and being bloated and is it still as heavy? in other words, could a woman mistake that period if she's pregnant, with a normal period? or is it less heavy and not as long?
Try to see a doctor. They can perform a more definitive blood test to determine if you're pregnant. Plus, if you are indeed pregnant and are bleeding in such a manner, it needs to be checked up on ASAP.

and i love with my boyfriend who i love very very much and he loves me very very much. we have even talked about getting married though we wont for aq few years lol but still. i am 18 and he is 19 and we both go to a community college. i am in my second year-he is in his first. i am going for my AA and he is going for a technical engineering certificate thing. his grandma works at intercil and he may be able to get a job there in the future--in fact he is set on that idea. i guess he is ignorant but he says his education does not need to go any further because his certificate is all he needs for his job. he doesnt think he needs an AA yest talks about getting a masters or bachelors. he loves school but doesnt have money to pay for it so he gets things like the PELL grant and such to pay for it.
my parents expect me to go away to a college next year. i live in Florida and have a scholarship. i can go to FSU, Flagler, really anywhere. we live together and i cant picture leaving him. i dont really want to go away to college--i like where i live beachside and will miss my friends and family-i am only 18 years old. i asked him and he doesnt want to go away to college and i have been asking him if he would moce with me if i moved away. the only place he said "maybe" to was Flagler college in St. Augustine b/c the beach--he is an advid surfer. i am an advid beach goer myself. oh what should i do?
is there something i can say to him to furher his education or make it move convincing to move?
he is a bit stubborn so i really need help!
Don't force him to further his education if he doesn't want to. If he realizes he needs it for the job he wants, he'll either come around, or decide on a different job ;]
If you want to live together, go for it. (I can't judge your situation, so if you and your family think it would be all right, then go for it! Just remember that being roommates will probably change your relationship at least a bit ;] ) Try to get an apartment with fairly decent access to the beach and the college of your choice (making you both happy).
Also, go to a college that YOU want, not your family. Respect their opinon by all means, but they should respect yours too! Don't base your decision on your relationship, either, because you never know what could happen (in other words, don't pass up an amazing opportunity just to save your boyfriend from an extra 30 minute drive to see you... get my drift?)
Best of luck to you.

I am a busy working mother of two and need someone to pick up my hamster and bring it to my home for me. Do you know any such errand services? I don't have any friends I can ask.
Thanks!
Why not ask whoever currently has your hamster to bring it back to your home? Depending on how far out of their way it is, you could offer then $5-$20, plus reimburse them for gasoline. I've never heard of a business like "Hamster Transporters, Inc." or anything, so I'm sure that with a little cash incentive you'd have people lining up to bring your beloved pet home. =)

I really want to make my room more "me", but I don't really know where to start. I don't like a single thing in it. I'm all about peace, so I want my room to somehow reflect that. I was going to paint the walls green or blue. I was thinking of putting up a bunch of posters too, but I'm not sure where I'd find them. I have carpet so I can't really get any rugs or anything. I don't know. What all can I do to make it more personal?
Go to Target! They have lots of really cute dorm stuff right now. And a lot of it is reduced on clearance too.
You could still get an accent rug, just get one of those anti slip mat things to put underneath.
Pictures, mirrors, and posters really help. Plus they aren't permanent besides a tiny hole in the wall =) You can find them anywhere, but craft stores like Michael's or AC Moore will have a lot of cheap prints. Good luck!

i was very curious for the past month. my teacher brought this up that had me going crazy about it. i am so curious.
but do you think there is science behind depression? besides the normal problems people
have,
my teacher said that about 75% of humans never get over depression. She said that scientists wondered that if there is something imprinted in the brain that makes humans depressed and can never become perfectly happy.
any comments? any answers?
Depression is a confusing condition.
Even the approved medications we have for it, we don't know WHY they work, we just know that for many people, they improve the situation or lessen symptoms.
I can tell you that a family member of mine has depression. Their brain STOPPED making serotonin almost completely for a time, and they're on oodles of medication (for lack of a better word) to correct this.
To an extent I believe that depression can be cured, depending on how bad it is, what triggered it, and the person. Some people have trouble shaking off the feeling of listlessness and are helped by treatments, while others have serious, permanent issues within their body that may not respond to anything. I'm by no means a doctor, but that's my opinion on it.

How do you know if you're ready for sex?
Shortest, simplest answer? You won't have to ask this question anymore.
Practical answer? You should be with the same person for a really long time. Be able to accept the potential consequences of your actions - pregnancy, STDs, a future breakup and heartache. Use at least two forms of contraception and know how to use them properly.

i coloured my hair and a week later i experienced severe hair loss, and then at the end of the month i went to a dermatologist he prescribed biotin and dexorange.....hair fall completely stopped but its been a year since then and i havent seen any improovement,my hair is very thin all over the head now! do you think hair loss is permanent? are my follicles dead? Thanks to all those who answer!
It's rare, but highly unlikely, that hair color would cause permanent hair loss. If the mixture is badly messed up, it could burn the hair off, but it would most likely grow back. I suggest seeing a doctor, because you could have a condition that causes your hair to fall out.
In any case, I'd avoid permanent haircolor due to the reaction you had the first time. I'm sorry about your hair =( Many regrowth treatments are effective, like Rogaine. I suggest looking into those, but consult with a doctor first if at all possible.

I'm a senior in high school so of course I've been thinking about college. I decided that I want to become a dentist. Does anyone know what I should major in for that? Or the courses i should take?
I happened to see careercruising in the last answer... i hate that site. I think it's because of my counselor though. She's terrible.
Anyway, some of my friends are pursuing this field and they're all going for either pre-med or predentistry. Only a few schools offer dentistry, so you'd probably be best off with pre-med for now.
If your counselor is half-decent, she'll be able to help you as well.

I'm an african american junior in high school. Over the past two years my unweighted GPA is 3.5, weighted 3.75. I'm taking an AP class this year, I've done 3 extra curriculars all three years and I plan to keep them through senior year too. I'm in a community service club- habitat for humanitys, and I'm in the process of geting inducted into the National Honors Society, and I'm in this dance society called Nu Delta Alpha. I've been the captain of my cheerleading squad, and I've made my college list * from best colleges to worst.
U Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, UVA, University of north carolina chapel hill, wake forest, college of william and mary, rochester u, George Washington u, university of deleware, drexel, and SUNY stony brook. Where do you think I could get into? You can tell me how you or a friend got into one of these colleges as your basis, anything helps! Thanks!
Check www.collegeboard.com and create a college list of all your top choices. From there, you'll have at your fingertips all the information you need: admission requirements, deadlines, tuition fees, financial aid.
One of the most important factors, unfortunately, is how well you score on the SAT or ACT exam(s). CollegeBoard also has the ranges of accepted scores (higher is better, obviously, haha)
I could GUESS which colleges you'd get into, but it'd be just that, a guess. However, with that high of a GPA, you could easily get into most state universities assuming that you half-ass the SATs and have a pulse when you apply ;] And with the private universities, it could go either way, as they heavily weigh SAT scores, essays, and interviews, none of which have happened yet.
Best of luck to you :]

is it actually legal, if your over 18 to smoke weed?
No, unless you live in the glorious state of Massachusetts, where you only get a fine of $100 for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.
Or if you use it for medical purposes in certain states.
Otherwise, no.

okay so ever since i was in 9th grade ive gotten highlights at the salon.Well now im in college and i have to pay for the salon highlights myself instead of my mom.I have to start saving money so i want to do them at home.My questions are whats the best products to use at home? oh and im thinking of doing low lights my highlights are growing out so i was owndering if its okay to add the highlights/lowlights over them? oh and if you have any tips for me id appreciate it :) thank you!
When I had highlights they were such a pain to keep up, so a couple years ago I just started dyeing my hair a warmer version of my natural color. It's SO much easier to maintain and is easier on your hair than highlights. It'll give you more time between colorings too, just keep that in mind.
Anyway.
If you still want highlights, I recommend anything by Garnier. Whenever I do my own hair I use those dyes and my hair has never suffered as a result. One of my friends is a cosmetology student, and she says that Garnier dye is easier on hair because of some sort of chemical in it? I trust her judgement :] I do NOT recommend the Ultra-Lift Browns, because I turned my hair orange that way.
Highlighting wands take a bit of getting used to. The day before, I recommend using conditioner for practice. And put an even layer of the mixture, because a glob here and there WILL make the highlight more intense in that spot!
Loreal makes this Colour Expert or something... its hairdye AND highlight in the same box. I tried it once, and it worked really well (but as I said before, I got sick of highlights, so I never used to again). It's a higher-end dye too, so it's not bad stuff.
Since this answer is already really long, I might as well add this: you don't need expensive conditioner and shampoo to maintain your color! Pantene is safe for color, and I love what it does for my hair. It prevents split ends and makes it ohsosoft! If you do want to buy salon stuff, shampoo is the product to splurge on. Cheap shampoo can strip away dye, but cheap conditioner usually just doesn't moisturize too well.

I sweat a lot during sports and on hot days. what is the best deodorant that is over the counter? are there any other ways to prevent sweating to much? thanks in advance
In addition to applying Clinical Strength deoderant at night, use your regular antiperspirant/deoderant in the morning. It'll make you feel fresh and leave the nice, pleasant scent that you're used to :]

If I were to fill up a car with a full tank of gas how many miles would I get until I had to fill it up again (given, it isn't highway driving but not too many stops and turns?) Just an approximate amount?
It depends on your car's mileage. Find it using a Google search (look for city driving numbers, not highway). Then figure out how many gallons are in your gas tank, and multiply that by your mpg rating (mileage). That's a rough estimation of how far you'll be able to drive before your next fill-up.
I personally don't like driving around with less than 1/4 of a tank(the idea of having my car break down in the middle of nowhere is unappealing), so I usually put about 12 gallons into my car every fill up :]

does anyone know how to sew volleyball spandex? Like if i buy material, how do I make them? How much material would I need? etc. thanks!
Spandex is a really difficult material to sew on your own. It stretches like crazy and using the wrong kind of needle and thread can make HUGE holes. And spandex is really expensive, as far as fabric goes anyway. Plus it'd be difficult to determine what size to make it, because the stretchiness of the fabric needs to be accounted for when sizing.
You'd be much better off investing in one or two pairs of Under Armour because they'll fit better and last longer. And you wouldn't have to worry about the seams popping either ;]

do you find people to really be any different under the influence of alcohol from personal experience? (maybe it depends on amt consumed)
Usually yes, but it depends on the person and how quickly they metabolize alcohol. I know people who can drink all night and it's like they drank lemonade or something. And there's people who are absolutely different people after just a couple drinks.
Sometimes the difference isn't always negative, not everyone gets angry/bitter/etc. Some people get really flirty, others loveable, funny, mopey.
