Practical answer? You should be with the same person for a really long time. Be able to accept the potential consequences of your actions - pregnancy, STDs, a future breakup and heartache. Use at least two forms of contraception and know how to use them properly.

I believe you are ready when you trust your partner 100% and you love them and have been with the person for a good amount of time and you know them very well and the relationship is strong. Also, I believe you are ready when you are ready to take on a possible parenthood.
Having sex for the first time should be special, As it only happens once than you are no longer a virgin anymore. Many people nowadays have sex because they "think" they are in love or they find it a way to kill boredom and sometimes end up being pregnant.
