Practical answer? You should be with the same person for a really long time. Be able to accept the potential consequences of your actions - pregnancy, STDs, a future breakup and heartache. Use at least two forms of contraception and know how to use them properly.

Everyone has different ways of thinking. I believe you are ready when you trust your partner 100% and you love them and have been with the person for a good amount of time and you know them very well and the relationship is strong. Also, I believe you are ready when you are ready to take on a possible parenthood.
Having sex for the first time should be special, As it only happens once than you are no longer a virgin anymore. Many people nowadays have sex because they "think" they are in love or they find it a way to kill boredom and sometimes end up being pregnant.

You know when your madly in love with someone and are ready to move on to the next step in your relationship but this has to be adult love and actual love not a crush in highschool or anything like that because if your too young your not ready no matter how ready you think you are you should be old enough and mature enough to do it and make sure you use protection. :)
