Yes! You should Definitely give it back! Just think....if your friend found 40$ in your closet *even if you didn't know about it* and stole it...how upset you wouuld be. you would feel betrayed, and you wouldn't be able to trust your friend. If you're a real friend, you'd give it back.

After stealing 40 dollars from a friend you shouldn't even consider yourself a friend of hers. No friend steals money from another. What you should do is give it back and hope that she still wants to be your friend. Good Luck :)

Uhm..why did you steal it in the first place? Yes, I think you should give it back. It would be the nice (and right) thing to do. When you bring it over, you could give it to her and apologize (which I recommend doing), OR you could just sneak it back into her closet while you guys are hanging out one day. Good luck.
