Ok, Well, my hamster Cocoa is acting very sick latley. I love him so much and would do and thing for him. He seems to be shaking almost and sneezing/sqeaking and i think he might even be trying to cough! He is now forming this crust around his nose and just a lil around his nose. I'm so worried about him, does any one know what sickness this could be or how i should handle this?
MelpomeneMuse answered Thursday July 29 2004, 1:15 pm: My rat had the same problem. This is most likely a problem with his respiratory system. You should take him to a vet and tell the vet exactly what has been happening and what how he was acting. [ MelpomeneMuse's advice column | Ask MelpomeneMuse A Question ]
xo_dream answered Tuesday July 20 2004, 8:51 pm: Aww .. take him to the vet! It sounds like some kind of respiratory infection, + one of my hamsters died from one of those =/. They can give them medication and it'll usually help. Good luck :o). [ xo_dream's advice column | Ask xo_dream A Question ]

FernGully answered Monday July 19 2004, 6:20 pm: Well, people don't usually bring hamsters to the vet because, well, to be perfectly honest they don't usually live long and are very replaceable. But, I used to have a hamster and it lived for a good long while so if you're really concerned bring the hamster to the vet. Though I will be brutally honest here and tell you that my hamster (his name was Buddy, ya he was cute) used to shake quite a bit and climb to the top of the cage and just kind of sit there upside down and shortly after that he went to hamster heaven. It was sad. Not that that is going to happen to your hamster, but its possible that he is very sick.
We think that the shaking might have been because my enormous dog came up and barked at the hamster and maybe it freaked him out so much it killed him? We don't really know. Has your hamster had a big scare recently? THat might cause the shaking somehow.
I did a little check on hamster health and it sounds like your hamster might have a cold. Here is what the website had to say:
Hamsters can suffer colds and are able to catch colds and flu from humans. Therefore if you have a cold or flu you should keep handling of your hamster to a mimum until you are recovered to avoid spreading your cold to the hamster. Hamsters can also catch a cold if the cage is exposed to draughts or are bathed.
Signs that a hamster has a cold are normally sneezing and runny nose. In more severe cases the hamster may have runny eyes, lethargy, weight loss, refusal to eat and drink or laboured breathing/wheeziness.
If the hamster exhibits signs of sneezing and running nose only and it continues to eat and drink and is active it should be kept in a warm room (not hot) of constant temperature and away from draughts. Some extra paper bedding should be placed in the cage and the hamster should recover within a couple of days. If the hamster does not recover after a couple of days or worsens veterinary advice should be sought as antibiotic treatment may be required.
If the hamster exhibits any signs of a severe cold (runny eyes, lethargy, weight loss, refusal to eat/drink or laboured breathing/wheeziness) veterinary advice should be sought immediately as antibiotic treatment is likely to be needed and failure to treat quickly could lead to bronchitis or pneumonia from which the hamster may have trouble recovering.
Giving a mixture of lukewarm water, milk and honey will also help with the hamster's recovery.
Provided colds are treated early before severe symptoms occur the hamster should make a full recovery within a few days.
------
Your hamster might also have a lung infection so heres what they had to say about that:
A hamster may develop respiratory problems due to an allergy, cold, bronchitis or pneumonia, or lung infection.
A lung infection can cause the hamster to shiver and wheeze and the hamster may also chatter its teeth and show signs of weight loss.
The hamster should be taken to a vet immediately to receive antibiotic treatment. Early treatment is vital to ensure recovery.
---------
There are quite a few health problems listed so you should go through and read them and check if your hamster shows any signs of those problems. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [ FernGully's advice column | Ask FernGully A Question ]

Redheadedgal answered Monday July 19 2004, 5:22 pm: Take him to the vet. My dog was acting sick and we tried to fix it ourselves but turns out it was just his time to go. Because he was a big dog he was just old but just take him to be on the safe side. [ Redheadedgal's advice column | Ask Redheadedgal A Question ]

u should go to the libray and pick up a book on hamster sicknesses.most likely he only has a cold. this probably happend becuae its too drafty at night were his cage is.at night u should place a balnket ova the cage.if this gets worse u should just bring it to the vet(it may be pricey but if u luv ur hamster this much it may be worth it) just remember hamsters dont live forever. this may just be a sign of old age.
hope this helps!! [ LiL_TeEnA_Ox's advice column | Ask LiL_TeEnA_Ox A Question ]
MFS answered Monday July 19 2004, 5:08 pm: most rodents end up getting pneumonia - I have mice, and already lost one of them to it, and another now has it. Rodents are genetically prone to getting lung infections, which are almost always lethal. If you talk to a vet, you might be able to get treatment, as hamsters are larger than mice, so there might be more that can be done for it.
Good luck. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]

chaos answered Monday July 19 2004, 4:45 pm: I would get this little guy to a vet pronto. When a small rodent like this gets sick, if you don't get them help quickly they won't make it. I had a little guinea pig that I woke up one day and was shaking. I carted her to the vet, and he didn't get a chance before it was too late. Hamsters and guinea pigs don't live very long. Hamster about 2 years. But it sounds like he has a little cold of some sort. I would put a little cotton bedding in there for him and call the vet if you can find one.
