"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

I just read that the EU has banned the use of Vaseline in Cosmetic products due to concerns that it may be carcinogenic.

Is this true? Is good old Vaseline linked to cancer?

These days, it seems that everything is labeled as "carcinogenic,"...with all the crap we're exposed to, I don't know if vaseline should top our list of concerns.

But I am still curious, I read about it, but wanted to know for sure: is vaseline really all that bad?

Well, anti-perspirant allegedly causes cancer, but using that logic everyone who uses deoderant would be dying right now.

Same with eletrical cords containing lead. If you chew on them, or live your life wrapped in them, you could expose yourself to high levels of it. So long as you're not eating Vaseline by the spoonfull you're fine.

Do they still exist??

Where can I find REAL jeans..not stretch??

I really dont like the stretch jeans because they dont suck anything in..they just show EVERY little flaw about your bottom half!!

Absolutely. It's just a matter of reading the tags. I know a lot of American Eagle jeans are 100% cotton, aka "non-stretch".

Levi's are still 100% cotton, so shop around & find what you're looking for. Target, Wal-mart, Kohl's, etc, all have a good selection of jeans. Good luck =)

Hi everyone, I have a formal in exactly a week. The past couple of days, I have been feeling very bloated, and when I tried on my dress, it zipped up (but only barely). I'm not asking about how to lose 35 pounds in 4 days or anything like that, but how can I change my diet to try to avoid bloating? I haven't been eating much solid food this past week because I had oral surgery recently (applesauce, yogurt, soup, etc). Thank you!

Copy/pasted [but helpful]

1. Reduce your sodium intake. Salt is the number one contributor to bloating.
2. Exercise as much as you can.
3. Avoid foods which are gassy such as cabbage, beans, milk and other vegetables and foods which contain lactose.
4. When eating meals, chew slowly. The old adage of chewing 100 times may be true. Lay down your fork between each bite.
5. Avoid chewing gum to reduce the amount of air you are swallowing.
6. Avoid powdered milk as it contains salt which increases bloating.
7. Too many starchy foods combined with protein contribute to bloating.
8. Try not to drink anything that is very cold, but keep it at room temperature.
9. Do not eat too much of anything. Portion control can reduce bloating.
10. Check to determine what condiments may cause your bloating, such as mayonnaise and the like.
11. Eating processed foods such as mac and cheese can cause bloating due to its high sodium content.
12. Snacks such as chips and certain types of cheese flavored popcorn have high sodium content.
13. Avoid diet sodas and candies.
14. Constipation may also be a factor in bloating. Eat foods rich in fiber.
15. Drink chamomile tea, which is not only good for the digestive system, but reduces bloating as well.

Also drink enough water. Good luck & have fun at your dance =)

13/f. hi guys. um. i know it's probably unanswerable, but i just want to know how you go about kissing someone for the first time. it's with my best friend, and i'm always with them.. so there's millions of chances. i just wanna know when.. how.

thanks in advance

Just go for it! Seriously, spontaneous kisses are so much better =) You'll just sort of know when it's a good time. Like, you could both be sitting down, or you could be pulling away from hugging him or something. But like I said, when the mood strikes you, kiss him!

Hey, I have this friend, a girl. She desperately needs to cry, but she is emotionless and cold. How can I bring her to tears or otherwise help her turn on the waterworks.

Some people just can't cry. It's almost impossible for me to cry, so I know what it's like.

Talking to her and letting her open up will most definitely help her out. Good luck

Yeah, it's normal. But I'm fairly certain that guys get more out of it than girls do.

How can I transfer music that I already have on my iPod to my new computer/another computer's iTunes without deleting any music off my iPod?

Plug your iPod into your computer like normal. It'll come up with a dialogue that'll say something like, "This iPod is synched with another computer's library" and click no, you do not want to update using THIS computer.

So now open My Computer. Under the "Tools" menu, go to "Folder Options..." and click the "View" tab. Click "Show Hidden Files and Folders" then click ok. Now, your iPod should show up (it'll be faded out though)

Now, click on the iPod icon that showed up, and go to iPod_control. There's a "music" folder with 50 folders (more or less, depending on what kind of iPod you have) folders named F00, F01, etc. Make a folder (either on your desktop or My Music, wherever you keep your music files). Open each folder (the F00 ones), click on a file ( they'll have names like HFJR, but that's okay), and hit CRTL+A (to select all) then CTRL+C (to copy) Then, open the new folder you just created & paste(CTRL+V). Repeat for all six folders.

Then, open iTunes and click File->Add Folder to Library->[folder name you created] and click OK.

& all your songs should be there!

So...on my Ipod I have music from my mom's old computer (long gone). On her new computer I have music that I want to put on my Ipod, too, but it says I can only sync with one computer at a time.

Is there any way to transfer the old music to her computer or I am stuck with 300 songs I can't play?

Check out my answer here.
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=460330

It'll be the same, only with newer iPods, there will be a lot more than six folders.

what is the semi thing in highschool?

Typically semi refers to a semi-formal dance. Most high school dances are semi-formal, which means a short dress for girls (as in not a floor-length gown) and dress pants & shirts for guys (ties optional) and no suit jacket.

I straighten my hair with a iron every morning because my hair is naturally curly and I can't anything with it. I've been Straightening it for almost a year. Now, my hair is dry, brittle, fried and i have split ends! I put hair stuff on it before i straighten it but it doesnt seem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should use to fix it or to put on it before i staighten it. Am i going to have to stop straightening my hair???

Cut your split ends. They're only going to get worse. I'd say yes, stop straightening your hair so much. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny is the best product for hair. I have curly hair [and it's wicked frizzy and curly and byah!goes everywhere.. you get the idea] and that serum makes my hair look reasonably good when it's curly:
http://a716.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/69/m_9a6ddcedf581e7e19e0cb7f9311435d3.jpg

Or straight [look at my column picture] and it stays really straight too. Use a heat protecting spray like Tresemee too.

Try turning the temperature down a few notches, and only straightening your hair every other day. Or don't do your hair on days you won't be going anywhere. Whatever it takes to reduce the amount of heat you're exposing it to.

I absolutely love fashion!
I love mini skirts with sequins.
I love jeans with cool designs.
I love shirts with different crazy colors and styles.

But really, Abercrombie&Fitch, Pacsun, and American Eagle just don't cater to my style!

I'm looking for a store that has really .. fashionable clothes, for cheapish.
I love sequins and flashy styles.
I love to look fashionable.

Any store suggestions?
Or even internet sites?

Charlotte Russe and Kohl's are the first two that immediately came to my mind. Kohl's has a lot of wicked nice tops that aren't "just like everything else" and also have amazing clearance sections. Also, JC Penney, macy's, etc. (for jeans especially), and Aeropostale.

Have you checked out thrift stores? You can get some wicked awesome stuff there if you look around for awhile. Plus, a lot of the stuff there is barely worn & looks new.

Okay, so theres this huge chunk of my hair that is oily straight after I've washed it, and I have no idea why.

At first I thought it was the way my hair was drying. But even if I naturally dry it, or blowdry it it's always the same part that's oily.

Even if it comes out oily, and I rewash it especially focusing on these oily parts, it still comes out oily.

I've tried so many things. Different shampoos, blow drying it, naturally drying it, using my wet 2 straight hair straightener, using no conditioner, using conditioner, focusing on the oily parts but it just doesn't help!

It's annoying that I can never wear my hair down anymore, and that's when I look the best :(

You might be washing it too much. That can make hair oily sometimes.

One of my friends has really oily hair and uses dish soap (like Dawn) on her hair once in awhile. Maybe try a drop or two of that?

I start gym class this week, i go to an all girls school. im not skinny at all and i had knee surgery a year ago so im not in shape and i cant get in shape cus i dont have time and my knee hurts a ton, and i have to wear a brace in gym. im scared we'll have to work out a lot and everyone will like make fun of me cus most of the girls at my school are skinny and in shape, but it's not my fault i busted my knee! help me not be so nervousss

Be confident (or fake it) and ignore people who tease you. If you want to get in shape, look for a low-impact exercise like swimming that you could do. Running on an elliptical is also very easy on joints. Before you start anything I'd check with a doctor though, to make sure you're doing everything right & see if you need to take a supplement for your joints or anything like that.

Also, dress in clothes that flatter you. This rule applies to everyone really... you'll feel a LOT more confident in, say, yoga pants as opposed to SUPER short shorts. Know what I mean? Pants will also help cover your brace, and a lot of people wear them so chances are it won't be noticed anymore than shoelaces will be.

Lastly, remember that it's just a class and the top thing on most people's mind is "When is this class OVER?" =) Honestly! Just have fun. Well, as much fun as anyone can have in gym class anyways.

Okay so im 16/f! Me and my boyfriend kiss, and make out alot. Its just he is really like slobbery. Like its a big turn off. I really like him though. And he wasnt always like this either so im confused. I always have to like pull away because its soo disgusting. How can I get him to not be like this?? Without actually telling him. Yesterday I like whiped my mouth on him becuase it was wet!! And hes like sorry was that me? And im like yeah. But he didnt change!!!! I dont know what to do??

Tell him! Otherwise he won't ever notice that it's bothering you. Don't make it a big deal, try to laugh it off. "Hey, you're drooling all over my face! What's up with that?". Or try something like "That's really intense.. try this..." [and then kiss him how you like to be kissed too!] Being able to laugh it off & not get upset over it will help out a lot.

This may also be helpful [it goes into more detail about what I've already mentioned]:

has anyone used Talika Lipocils?

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Eyelashes-Longer

Also, clear masacara. I used to use that stuff all the time. It works similar to a regular mascara (making your lashes appear longer) but it doesn't rub off or anything, and it seemed to me to make my eyelashes a bit longer & more manageable.

i read this studying tip:

Review lecture material the DAY it is taught.
Studies show that any new material learned will be forgotten within 24 hours if it fails to be transferred to long-term memory. Once again, no one's telling you to memorize it, just make sure it's somewhere in the back of your head when you need it.

can anyone expand on the short term -> long term memory thing to me? how do you know if you have done that? ok so after class ends i should spend half an hour reviewing everything then nap and then continue? bc would napping help you memorize material?

Have you seen the movie 50 First Dates? It's like that. When you're in class, hearing something for the first time, you'll remember it. Say your teacher tells you the Pythagorean Theorem for the first time on Monday morning. You write it down [a squared + b squared = c squared]. And you THINK you know it. And you proceed to spend the entire week playing videogames and using your math notebook as a seat cushion. Come Friday, chances are you're not going to remember that equation for the quiz. Basically, it went in one ear, hung around for a few hours, and went out the other.

If you had reviewed your notes once or twice since first taking them, chances are a LOT better that you're going to remember it. Think back to learning your phone number, address, tying your shoes, etc. How did you remember? Repitition. You recited that number or tied your shoes SO many times you could probably do it in your sleep. Your mom didn't just say "cross the laces and make a bow, GO!" and that was it. You did it over & over.

hope that helped =)

14turning15.Female.
Okay, my room was just painted this summer a nice sky blue.. it's really bight and I like it. But I want something to take the blue back a couple notches because right when you walk in it's like "wow.. it's blue." My birthday's coming up Febuary and i'll probably be getting like 70 dollars by the family. I don't wanna repaint.
I hear that there's this magnetic paint and that sounds soo cool. And I want to make a murale on my biggest wall. I saw it on this movie and this kids whole wall was covered in posters and just random stuff and it looked awesome. My parents will let me paint as long as it's suddle. I have extra yellow pant from my living room and I could like get stamps or whatever of stars and make a banner around the top ofmy wall or something. My theme is Blue.. Carebears and Tinkerbell. I love them all lol. I don't have a lot of money but I want someting diffrent.
Anything cheep you know about or what not

Thanksss

A mural would be a really good idea for two reasons. One, it would become the focus of the walls, as opposed to HOLY BATMAN THAT'S A BLUE WALL! Second, it's easily moved and/or taken down once you get tired of it.

I've heard that magnetic paint isn't very strong unless you put a LOT of coats, and that it's expensive. But I won't say for sure, it might be really cheap now. Painting a pattern on (or stenciling) would accent the room, but if you get tired of it, it may be a bit difficult to cover up without primer and the like.

Lastly, try some different-colored lightbulbs. If you have soft yellow light now, try white. Or vice-versa. There's these bulbs I had once that were blueish and they made natural sunlight. The made everything look really different & cool. So next time the bulbs burn out, try something like that.

Have fun!

Whenever i put my clothes in the dryer, my shirts shrink and become too short. Its very upsetting. I want to try some kind or air drying or ventilation sysmtem. I saw a commercial for one where it would just air dry the clothes.. like there were mesh racks and you drape the clothes over them. I remember so little about it, that its been really hard to try to google. Does anyone know about any clothes air drying systems?? Or anything like that? That would be great. Thanks.

I don't know what system you're talking about, but for less than $5 you could buy some pastic hangers at Target, and hang your clothes up to dry.

You wouldn't even have to buy a rack, if you have a shower curtain rod or doorway in your house already. If you're REALLY desperate for space you could pull and Uncle Buck and hang your clothes on the fan blades of a light fixture =)
