"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

wicked awesome conversations

^my forum, liven it up a little?

advice

i spilled red nail polish on my white carpet. besides calling a carpet cleaner & getting the carpet replaced, is there any carpet cleaner you know for a FACT works to remove nail polish? i tried nail polish remover and it helped a little but not all the way.

Goof-Off or Oops remover. It comes in a tin container last time I bought it, but it might be plastic now.
My dad just said you can buy it anywhere, check the hardwareish/heavy duty cleaning section of a store like Target or Home Depot.
Before you get it, try to pick as much of the dried polish out as possible; it'll be less to remove later.
It works SO well, but it's wicked potent. Make srue you open windows and ventilate the room until the smell is totally gone.

Good luck!

I have this neutrogena face scrub. I wet my face with a washcloth and follow the steps. But when it says rinse I get confused.

How can I rinse my face using a sink? I cant fit my head under the faucet lol

Does just using your hands to rub your face with water and drying (patting it dry) with a towel count as rinsing your face and drying it? (I'm using the washing the dishes echnique for that theory =/)

A less messy alternative to the ideas suggested already is just using the wet facecloth and washing the scrub off with it by gently wiping your face. Rinse the washcloth out a couple times and repeat on your entire face. You'll know when it's all gone because you won't see or feel it anymore.

so this is kinda gross and its bothering me.
so i kinda have strong hairgroth. like it even grows on my butt and my back. so IÄm desiding to shave it all cos it's discusting. but is there any kinda way to make it grow less fast and dark?
I'm shaving my arms already, but it's really tireing since i have to get up earlier etc :/
what should i dooo??
i'm NOT one of these fat ugly people or smth and nobody knows about my "issues". I'm also very very pale and have black hair :/ and i'm just scared that if i get a bf he'll be grossed out which i can totally understand. and i wanna feel better about myself :/ heelp.

Assuming that you don't have an eating disorder, you might have a hormonal imbalance that's causing all this hair to grow. Consider seeing a doctor. If your parents don't know, simply ask when you go for a physical or ask them if you can go for one if you don't already.

Anyway, I don't recommend shaving because it'll come back all stubbly and such. Instead try a product like Nair, or use a home waxing kit [which might not get ALL the hair on the first try, but it'll grow back slower] or, if the hair isn't thick [like if it's peach fuzz, just really dark] you could use cream bleach to make it really light.

Yes I'm sure this question is very common but nonetheless I still need help. Well I have a good friend named Robert and he is really cool. So I did not like as more than a friend him before but recently I have gotten closer to him so now I really like him. Last week we danced together and there was a slow dance and he asked me to dance with him. Other than that hes always talking to me and around me and we really can talk about just about anything. It's just that hes 18 and I'm 16, so like I think he thinks I'm too young. And he like flirts with other girls so I'm not sure how he sees me: as a friend or more. But sometimes I'll like catch him looking at me and theres something about how he looks at me that makes me think he likes me. What do you guys think? How should I go about this whole thing? thnaks

Age is just a number. And it's only two years.

If that's the only thing holding you back, then let it go. Seriously, if you both like each other this could end up being a great relationship. Provided that you're both willing to take that chance there's nothing else stopping you.

Talk to him [you're already good friends so it should be relatively easy] and try to figure out how he feels about you.

hi...Everytime i take a shower my hair gets all poofy and yuk! I am definitely not going to stop taking shower so what should i do? my hair is naturally straight but straightening it would help the poofiness....i just dont have time to sit and straighten my hair in the morning or before i go to bed. do u have any suggestions?

Use a conditioner that's anti-poof or smoothing.
There's lots so find one that smells good to you, and is within your budget.

Also consider using a hair serum, or cream [depending on your hair] when your hair is damp to control it. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny is the absolute best, but it's relatively expensive [16-20 dollars a bottle] and John Freida or Garnier is a good alternative.

I'd like to highlight my hair soon with blonde highlights (right now it's a medium brown). The only thing that's stopping me is the color of my eye brows-they're JET black.

-How much does it cost to get my eyebrows dyed?
-What color would you suggest getting?

Thank you.

Usually if you're getting it done at a salon, they won't charge you for dyeing your eyebrows, and if they do it's VERY inexpensive (since they use the hairdye they're actually using on your head)

If they have to mix dye they might charge you. Ask what it would be, since salon price ranges are varied.

Dyeing it by yourself isn't a great idea because you could easily blind yourself or mess up and lose your eyebrows.

I'd recommend keeping your eyebrows a dark brown. Anything too light won't look natural. Having darker brows than your hair actually looks good most of the time.

how can I make my boyfriend love to me?

You can't 'make' your boyfriend do anything.
He can, and will, do whatever he wants.

He's going out with you. This is typically a sign that a person likes you. Just be yourself and if the relationship is meant to be, you'll know.

is it possible for me to get pregant if i take off the patch before having sex it was 3day before changing patches?

From the Otho Evra website:

"What should I do if a patch seems loose, partially lifts off of my skin, or falls off?
Do not try to reapply a birth control patch if it is no longer sticky; if it has been stuck to itself or another surface; if it has other material stuck to it; or if it has become loose or has fallen off before.

For less than 24 hours: Try to reapply your patch or apply a new patch immediately. No backup contraception is needed and your "Patch Change Day" will remain the same.

For more than 24 hours, or if you are not sure for how long: Start a new
4-week cycle immediately by applying a new patch. You now have a new Day 1 and a new "Patch Change Day". You must use backup contraception, such as a condom, spermicide or a diaphragm, for the first week of your new cycle because you may become pregnant during this time."

I would say that yes, you weren't protected, at least fully. So there's a possibility. Emergency contraception will work for up to five days afterward. Or, if you're morally opposed to that, wait until you're supposed to get your period and take a test.

Hope everything works out for you. In the future make sure you're more careful with your birth control!

hey.

well, i hear it's really bad to skip meals. i'm not anorexic or anything, i love to eat, but i skip meals... it's how i lost so much weight in the span of a few weeks (unfortunately i gained it all back. DELISHH.) so i want to lose like, 10 lbs again. omfg, i can't believe i gained it all back. well not ALL of it, but a good chunk. i have to get in a bikini on tuesday [ haha ] and i kinda want to have a flat stomach. can i skip lunch [ well not SKIP but not eat a huge ass meal ] for today & tomorrow and not have a belly? this weekend, i had two slices of pizza, a coke, bbq stuff like ribs & chicken wings. i have a huge stomach right now...

& i can't "eat healthy" cause there really isn't healthy food in my house. i find it a lot more effective to just.. eat really lightly (like lunch water & a snack).

also - i sometimes feel sick if i don't eat for a long period of time, and eat an orange. but acidity builds up in my stomach and i feel superr gross. when acid is really high in my stomach, what should i eat? like, soup?

also, what (sooooo sorry

Skipping meals can be bad, like if you're starving and depriving yourself. But if you aren't hungry it's okay not to. Summer makes me lose my appetite; it's totally normal. Maybe control your portions instead of skipping a meal entirely.

Drinking water will help you lots. It reduces bloating, and can also fill you up faster and keep you from eating when you're actually thirsty.

Avoid overly salty foods- which can be hard to do at a party, so limit yourself, or go for a sandwich instead of pizza and chicken.

To reduce acid you could chew a Tums, or drink milk. Or eat actual food that isn't acidic, like cereal or bread.

Your last question has a lot of answers so I'll just give you a website:

only search advicenators.com

Lastly if you do crunches right before you go to the beach, supposedly your muscles "pop" a little more and make you look leaner.

I've babysitting a 7 year old boy for almost 2 years. The parents are very nice but I kind of feel like they don't trust me. A few months ago I was babysitting for them late at night and before they left, they made a very big deal out of it. They kept telling me to lock the door and not open it for anyone (like I don't already know that) and gave me their cell numbers even though I already have them and told me to call if anything happens. I was really confused because they were acting like they were really worried and this wasn't the first time I've babysat for them, and nothing ever happened to the little boy while I was there. Last week I was babysitting him in the morning and someone knocked on the door. I told him that we shouldn't answer because we were alone, but the person kept knocking for literally about 5 minutes and wouldn't leave. The little boy kept telling me to open it and I wouldn't, and he started to cry and get scared when the person kept knocking. So I kind of panicked, and told him to stay in the living room while I answered the door. I talked to the person through the screen door and he wanted to talk to the boy's dad. I said he wasn't home and the guy gave me a business card and told me to give it to him. So when the boy's mom got home I showed her the card and she said "Oh, that guy came?" So she obviously knew he was going to come and I don't know why she didn't tell me (other families I've babysat for always told me if they were expecting someone to come to the house). I babysat him again a couple days ago, and his mom told me over and over again not to answer the door for anyone. She never really gave me a chance to explain why I answered the door the last time. They do want me to keep babysitting for them, but they treat me like I don't know what I'm doing. So how can I get them to trust me?

I'm going be the devil's advocate here and say that you were wrong in handling the situation where the guy kept knocking. At least partially. Talking to the guy through the door is okay, provided it stayed locked. You shouldn't have said that the boy's father wasn't home though. You were lucky, they WERE actually expecting the guy to arrive. Maybe they expected him in a day or two, since the mother seemed surprised that the guy was there. He could have been anyone, trying to get in the house, and could have lied. That's probably why they're telling you over and over, because nowadays you really can never be too careful.

But, they're still hiring you to babysit their kid. Because of this I am 100% sure that they trust you. Otherwise, they wouldn't hire you anymore. Their son is, well, their son. And they want him to be safe. So do NOT open the door for anyone. Even who you think is the mailman needing a signature for a certified letter. Yes, it seems like being paranoid. But really, I could take my mom's old uniform from the post office, show up at someone's house, and they might open the door for a complete stranger who might be robbing their house.

If they are expecting someone to arrive, suggest to the parents that they establish a "code word" or whatever it's called. Like say her sister is coming over with a box of clothes, have her tell you the word asparagus [Use something weird and unexpected. Maybe disambiguation or panda] and you know to let her in. It sounds ridiculous but it's actually a good system, and will also show that you're serious about safety and abiding by their wishes.

Best of luck! =]

Hey im 17/f and i went to the doctors for birth control and recommended Yaz. I got it and i wanted to know a little bit more about it. If you're on it what are the good effects and bad effects of it? Can you please just tell me a little bit more about it. Thanks a bunch!

Side effects are similar regardless of the birth control you're taking. Yaz is a different hormone than a lot of others, hence the "lower dose" and claims about acne/mood/etc. One of the things about it is that it can increase potassium levels so you'll most likely be tested at some point. That's not usually a big deal, by the way, so don't worry about it.

The symptoms the girl below me described are accurate, for the first month you'll probably be spotting regardless of the type. After a few months, though, you should be fairly regular. If you aren't you'll probably need another type, the girl below me should probably do something about her symptoms, the right pill wouldn't be doing all that. All this has probably already been explained to you.

I've been on it for about two months so I can't totally say how well it's worked for me. I can, however, say that it didn't cause me any weight gain [some women do, some women don't] and hasn't affected my mood. Again, how each girl reacts to each type of pill affects what she ultimately sticks with and can't really be predicted until you actually TAKE the pill for a few months.

Check out this site for more info.

i have acne on my face. only on my forehead and chin. but its really bad in those areas. i try to refrain from using proactiv and stuff like that cuz ive been told it makes your skin very irritated and flaky. i use an acne wash and acne cream whenever i have the energy to do so. only at night. during the day i totally forget.

but i cant afford any of that name brand stuff on TV but i need something over the counter that works reaally really well. that wont make my skin flaky, will clear it up, keep it clear, and nurish it. :( help?

http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=510619
I wrote that myself, so it's not copying.

As for the dry skin part, moisturizer is the best solution =] Clean and Clear is very inexpensive and lasts a long time.

Also, the store brand versions of all these products [even the lemon juice!] will work just the same. So unless you're allergic to a certain ingredient, going with the lower-cost option won't hurt anything.

Uhh this is an awkward question, but for those females that go to the gynocologist for birth control and such, do you shave or not? Also, what is the process like? I'm going to get birth control soon so I'd like to know how it will be so I'm not shocked or anything.

Doctors have seen absolutely everything, so don't change whatever you do now. If you normally shave, keep doing so. If you don't, don't. Simple as that.

If you aren't sexually active your gynecologist might not even have to do an exam. Anyway, here's an article that explains what to expect if they do one:
http://www.coolnurse.com/pelvic_exams.htm

To you it might seem like a big deal, but to your doctor it won't be at all, it's what they do everyday. Most likely the main of the visit will be discussing which birth control you'll be put on [which is typically very simple anyways!]

ok so I've been wearing make-up forever now and only recently my eyes have become super blood shot. They started doing that towards the end of the school year &+ now. I don't suppose I'm allergic or anything because my eyes didn't do that in the beginning or the middle of the year. I really don't know what it could be. My mom thinks it's my eyeliner (but we're not really sure) and she also wants me to stop wearing make-up altogether. So is there a way that I can still keep wearing eyeliner without it making my eyes blood shot? Maybe I should switch to a different eyeliner brand? or what? Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks,
Michellemonster

Get rid of the eyeliner you have now; you could have some sort of infection on it that you keep spreading.

Try not wearing some for just a couple days. It wont kill you I promise. Switch to a different brand.

If all else fails, get some Visine. Try using one for contacts first. It sounds weird, but redness-reducing eyedrops contain ingrediets that could actually irritate your eyes MORE. Contact stuff is just lubricating and moisturizing and is simply a LOT nicer on your eyeballs.

Perform a Google search and you'll find out everything you want to know, or read a magazine like Cosmopolitan.

My boyfriend from last year broke up with me for his ex girlfriend. We were only going out for about a month, but now him and his ex just broke up again and now he wants to go back out with me. I'm not sure yet, I mean i really do like him but when he broke up with me i just felt like dying, i didn't know what to do with myself. i kind of want to go back out with him just to get back at him, but i know i'll end up falling for him again.

Go out with him again only if you actually want to be with him. Trying to "get back" at him is just sinking lower than you really are.

But hey, there's nothing wrong with giving a relationship another chance, so long as it didn't end over something like abuse or cheating.

whats the name of the song herE?

If you read through the comments the author of the video says that it's her own song playing in the video that someone in her family wrote with her, and that she doesn't have a music myspace anymore.

I have one question-I heard that after one to two years, periods start to get really bad. Is it also true that your breasts stop growing two years after your first period?

It depends completely on the person. Mine, for example, was fine until a couple years ago, then went completely haywire. I think PMS symptoms get worse after a couple years because we're maturing at the same time, so growing pains + already crazy emotions + periods = insanity. And your breasts will stop growing whenever your body decides to stop, haha. You can't really gauge it on when you get your period because it's different for everyone.

i really wanna put some blue in my hair. not the whole head, just like, underneath so it'll show when its up in a ponytail and when i straighten my hair. but my parents INSIST that i cant. how can i convince them to let me due my hairr???
HEELPP!

Do what they ask of you, without complaint. Show maturity. Be reasonable. Ask again in a few weeks and ask specifically why you can't.

Possible "arguments" [but in a civil tone or you'll get nowhere]
- It's just hair, and will grow out.
- I can use temporary dye first, to see how it looks.
- Would another color be okay? [BRIGHT Red is a good alternative, because its closer to a natural hair color]
- It's underneath and can be hidden for 'proper' events.

where can i get a tote bag? im just looking for a plain black one with maybe a little design on the front.

Hey, I have this bag from American Eagle, but in blue [the black one is wicked cute too]
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90108&productId=0427_7839

The back is totally plain, no design at all.
And it's very well-made.

A lot of other sites right now have bright colors because of summer merchandise. Try WalMart and Target, they usually have "basic" canvas totes and whatnot. Good luck!
