Yes, I'm the same person who asked you about toning while walking not too long ago. I'm 20, and female.
Walking is good exercise; I know that. I'm concerned that it's not strengthening all my muscles to the point where it would be beneficial to me.
Because I have chronic pain, it's difficult for me to do anything too intensive, or on the hard floor. I'm most concerned about strengthening my back and abdominal muscles so I can better support my core and thus help with the pain. I do crunches sometimes, but getting down on the floor isn't very nice on the body, even on carpet.
So, here's the question--are there other ways I can strengthen my abs and back that don't require lying down or otherwise causing further pain? Or am I over-analysing and walking is actually sufficient to reach all my muscles? Are there any other areas I should be concentrating on that walking might not help?
I can't make the Fibromyalgia go away, but I'd like to manage it as best as I can so I can at least have somewhat of a normal life.
Thanks.
Well, walking is good for the health overall- for people who can't take/don't want a lot of stress on their cardiovascular system it provides a gentle working of all body systems- cardio, muscular, endocrine, etc.
Training the abs without doing a crunching movement is pretty tricky because the abs have one function and one only- to draw the ribcage closer to the pelvis; hence a crunch.
However- this is called "Ab specific" work and since it is the core of your body- your abs get A LOT of work throughout the day supporting your whole upper body and with careful attention to their feel- they also get worked hard during virtually any exercise that they're really not the main target of.
You have to remember too that the abs are a very small muscle group and they don't need to be worked 7 days a week with crunches- this will actually cause your midsection to get bigger. It won't tone anything- just like doing bicep curls won't burn fat on your arms. I do mine only 3 days a week and that's what I recommend to everyone else too.
I don't know if you have ever tried doing crunches on a stability ball but I find that a lot more comfortable than the floor, doing vacuums will help strengthen the midsection also- you blow out all your air and suck your stomach in as far as u can and hold it until you can't anymore- you can do this anywhere; while you're walking, laying in bed, etc.
With careful attention to detail you can also feel a bit of the lower back work during these also and I am sure you know that strong abs helps to prevent a lot of lower back problems.
All in all- you should focus on trying to find comfortable ways to just do the basics and not worry about doing it with a lot of intensity. Even just doing some vacuums when you're taking a light walk during the day will really help to develop more core strength and as you get better at them you will see that your core will feel a lot stronger and you'll be able to do more and possibly even make the exercises you find uncomfortable just a little more tolerable. You're not training to get ready for a bodybuilding show so just take it easy and do what you can.
Ok so i'm gonna start working out and i would like to just start working on my trouble areas so what are some good exercises to do for my stomach my arms and my thighs????? please help
I will say with 100% certainty that that approach will fail.
Work out your whole body from the start. If you just work your trouble areas then you are wasting your time.
my ex is really mean hes mad at me and not his friend dylan me and his friend dylan are going out and hes not mad at him and hes been telling stuff mean about me and his dad has been calling and telling me im ganan go to court if i talk to him
There's a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Orders of protection are issued by either family court or criminal court and they're issued at a judge's discretion when there is credible evidence that the person in question is a threat- I am not a lawyer or a police officer but you do not want an order of protection put against you- doesn't look good in the future when you want a nice job. Get your parents to quell the situation with his parents, break up with the friend and move on and don't talk to either anymore.
For your information- when it comes to issues of harassment and an order of protection and court is involved; you are not protected by the 1st amendment.
my gf dumped me and im really upset because she dumped me because her mates were calling her a sell out and her grades were falling:( im really upset she said it wasnt my fault and shes really sorry but im still annoyed i keep gettin random outbursts of anger e.g i clotheslined the hardest guy in my school because he annoyed me not a gd idea i also punched my wall n craked it broke my light switch and kiked my door of its hinges im pretty strong so i can do alot of damage what can i do to calm my self down:(
Sounds like you got your first lesson in what teenage girls especially love to make you do- feel angry and jealous over them. Acting like a tough guy isn't going to get anywhere, it's not cool, it's not impressive.
Relax dude- there are going to be many more girls after her and you will have these feelings again. She knows that you are acting this way and it means she is getting attention- you are letting her win.
Take a breather and get back out and don't worry about having a girlfriend until you're serious enough to commit to a relationship and are getting your life in order later down the road. For now- just be single, get as many girls as you can and live and learn.
hi, i was just wandering if theres a sport out there which is a cross between pro-wrestling and boxing? i know stuff like ufc is a mix between amateur wrestling and boxing, but its in a cage and its different right? any help will be appreciated. thank you.
UFC Sucks. Watching regular boxing.
I guarantee Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones Jr can beat the living shit out of any UFC competitor in a real fight.
anyone know all the really really funny south park episodes, or the lovey dovey ones? please tell me! i wanna see them on youtube. links are appreciated too. :]
Usually I insert a wise ass answer for something like this- but I am a huge South Park fan so I am going to give you a site where you can watch ALL episodes ever made for free.

i know a lot of you guys are probably gonna tell me i dont need to lose weight
and everyone calls me tiny so im not gonna tell you how much i weigh
but since everyone is calling me tiny and skinny and wish they had my body
i feel like i NEED to be tiny
but i still feel like im chunky
so if anyone has anything to help me to lose weight that would be great
and also i need something that will work fast
im going to Florida in February
14/f
I am going to use you as an example for whoever may read this of exactly how not to approach a weight loss goal. You admit that people tell you that you are tiny, your main focus is your stomach, you want it done fast and you're 14 years old.
You did not once mention that you want to do it because you want to be healthier, feel more energized- you are just concerned with the end result for your trip to Florida and playing up to this ridiculous image that you have created of yourself.
You say you NEED to be tiny- I am going to tell you that in the long run; you can have a shredded 6 pack, slender legs- the whole deal...but all of that means absolutely nothing if you don't put your health before your image. You don't NEED to be tiny- you WANT to be tiny; however you NEED to be healthy.
You're 14 and have the opportunity to start this the right way- focusing on how you can make a healthier more energized you. That's the foundation to ultimately not only feeling good- but looking good as well.
everyone says cardio is the way to lose weight.
well is ddr considered cardio?
cos i like playing it, but like i dont like running.
so could i play ddr and still be doing cardio then do like squats and crunches on the ablounge to tone the muscles?
please help.
other cardio ideas [not running] would be appricated.
thankss
Dancing is not the ultimate form of cardio. Running or climbing stairs really is. "Everyone" is basically wrong.
Running a mile will get you a lot more for your time...it's just on you to stop being lazy and just do it and not look for the easy way out.
So I have really big calves that I've always been self-conscious about. I hate wearing shorts, and skirts not becuase of my legs, but specifically becuase of my calves. I will NEVER in school, but around my friends I build up some courage to. The other day for the first time someone actually called my calves big.. I'm not athletic, I'm not over weight altough right now I'm trying to lose some. Why are my calves so big? Is this just how my body is or is there something I can do about it? I don't want them reall muscular just thinner. Is losing weight going to help?
Are we talking about just naturally big calves or "Cankles" here?
Your level of activity and how much you walk can affect the size and shape of your calves. Genetics is a big part- if the women in your family have the same kind of legs; it's likely that you will too. The calves are an extremely stubborn muscle to develop because they're used to a heavy workload day in and day out.
Losing weight will help, but it's really just genetics. Sorry :-(
Don't worry- I don't have the best calves either and I pound the shit out of them when I train legs lol.
is 2 cups of organic yogurt, a handful of granola, and a handful of frozen blueberries on top of it too fattening to eat every morning for someone who wants to lose 10 pounds?
No...but there's a lot of sugar in that.
i have the Biggest Loser workout tape, and i have a tread mill. i enjoy doing both to loose weight. would i benifit from alternating the two every day, or maybe doing one one week and the other the second week?when i use the treadmill, i usually jog a mile. what would be the best way to incorporate both of these, and still benifit from it, because both work great for me.
thanks!
Variety is the spice of life- especially with working out. Alternate the tapes weekly.
I'm trying to lose weight, and i already have an exercise plan for warm weather. My question is, is it safe to lose 2 pounds a week for 24 weeks?(If i DO lose 2 pounds per week, then in 24 weeks i'll be around my recommended weight) thank you so much!
Yes. 2 lbs a week is the ideal. Good to see that you're doing it the right way and not the fast way.
May I still consider myself vegetarian if i do not eat chicken, turkey or beef, but I still eat fish ocasionally?
No, not really. However if you don't eat any red meat, fish or fowl and you eat eggs and milk and cheese and other dairy products- you can consider yourself a lacto-ovo vegetarian.
I have a serious hate for people where I live. They use labels constantly & it's annoying. I don't get what joy they get out of degrading someone else for their music tastes & clothing choices.
What's the deal with labels? And why do people use them? I don't get it. But labels should die & so should the people who use them. Nobody's a soup can.
Well it's not just where you live...it's the whole world and you might as well grin and bear it and get used to it. It isn't going to stop ever. That's life.
Wait until you step out into the real world where NO ONE cares at all about you. You better develop some thick skin for that.
How truly important is the SAT if you have all A's and 2 B's throughout high school with mostly advanced classes..?
Considering it's the standardized test by which most colleges judge your admission by. Um...Very.
I was lucky that my college accepted my ACT which I did better on than my SAT.
i know there must be alot of these questions but i need to know whether my daily diet is healthy oh btw im a vegetarian...
breakfast - toast (brown bread)
lunch - sandwhich (brown bread) crisps
dinner - i have a variety of things such as - pizza, noodles, vege burgers, vege fish fingers etc..
snacks - i don't normally snack but if i do i just normally have ome peanuts.
i've been eating like this ever since christmas and i've noticed iv'e lost a alot of weight and i have't really been active that much so i was thinking maybe because i changed my diet thats why i've lost weight...
oh btw 13/f
thanks
xxxx
Nope.
You're eating too little. I see a whole bunch of carbs and not a lot of protein in that. Sooner or later the water will be drawn into your muscles, you will bloat and you will gain weight. You need protein and not so much carb.
You eat very starchy breads for 2 meals in a row. Have Oatmeal for breakfast instead of toast, and for lunch or dinner when you want a change- look into vegetable soups- homemade is even better. Also- don't eat just noodles for dinner- have a veggie burger or something like that with it.
If you changed your diet because of some medical reason or belief then all the more power to you- but if you became vegetarian under the impression that a vegan's diet loses the most weight then you're mistaken. Especially a vegan diet that doesn't contain a lot of protein.
If you're really interested in this whole vegetarian idea then I recommend you don't become a full on vegan but rather a lacto-ovo vegetarian who does not have any red meat, fish or fowl in their diet but has dairy products with things like eggs, milk, cheese to supplement their protein intake.
I will say this now- if you don't add in more protein then this diet will eventually fail.
15/f
How many grams of protein should I be getting a day. I swim for about 2 1/2 hours 6days a week. I'm 5'10" and 160 lbs. I don't know if that affects it or not but w/e. haha. Thanks.
Bodyweight does affect the amount of protein one should consume. I personally eat a lot of protein but not as much as most lifters do because in my own experience and research I believe it to be VERY hard for the human body to be deficient in protein. I think if we are all getting in some fish and meat and dairy then we are doing just fine with our protein consumption.
You don't need a whole lot; less than 100- and don't get caught up with grams and calories and all that crap. Wing it.
was the movie texas chainsaw massacre based on real events? because i've always wanted to know!!
I did one of my Criminology reports on Ed Gein.
Sick man indeed.
are there any good winter exercises i can do indoors? i don't have a treadmill, and i don't like to run outside in the cold. but i don't wanna be a bum til april either. and i don't belong to the YMCA or anything. but i need to lose weight! thanks
Rocky ran out in the cold...why can't you?
Will this affect her health if a 12 year old drinks Slimfast? Thanks.
You asked this last night- she's 12 and Slimfast is not for her.
