Can someone explain to me what Tapas is? (link)
Tapas are Spanish appetisers. This page seems to do a very good job explaining them: http://www.andalucia.com/taste/tapas/home.htm

I have a small cyst (like an infection under the skin) of my earlobe. Tomorrow I'm going to get the cyst lanced, thus relieving the pressure in my earlobe. It's pretty small, only the width of my earlobe at the bottom, but it's extremely painful now. I'm not afraid to get it lanced, but I'm wondering, will I have to have stitches? Will they give me a shot of pain reliever/numbing thing? Thanks! (link)
Lancing usually means they stick a large-bore needle into it. They might use local antistetic for it, likely a topical treatment (not an injection). Being on your earlobe, I doubt you'd get stitches - just a small hole poked into the cyst with a needle and the cyst drained.

What Are Level 2 and 3 Moderators? How Would Someone Become One?

Thank-You In Advance

love... Maggie (link)
We have an FAQ for a reason - http://www.advicenators.com/faq.php

You'll find the answers on L2 and L3 mods in there.

Becoming a L1 mod is easy. Becoming a L2 mod is harder. Becoming a L3 mod is probably not going to happen.

OK. I asked around and I didn't seem to get a right answer and some people told me to come to you b/c you have the guitar know-how. So here's my question.

High E-3---------------
B -0---------------
G -0--------------
D -0---------------
A -2---------------
Low E -3---------------

^ (link)
the dashes, in this case, represent nothing - they just show the virtual string on which you are playing. So, in this case, you're looking at the G major chord. Typicaly, you'll see it written as 320003, which corresponds to the notes G, B, D, G, B, G - and the tablature you show is exactly that.

Now, if the tab were showing an actual song, the amount of space left between notes can be indicative of how long/short the note is. I've also seen people write an extra line above the tab with "W", "H", "q", "e", "s" for whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes.

When you see a dash, in the simplest sense, it just means that nothing is going on on that string at that particular moment.

Feel free to spew any other guitarish questions my way.

can people see who asks the question on advicenators? i mean like i'm asking this question, can anyone find out that it's me?

thanks (link)
Only high-level moderators can readily see that information. The general users of the site cannot see who has asked what question. We generally only look at who is asking questions when investigating abuse.

Anybody know any good brands that make chromatic guitar tuners? I was thinking about getting a crate but i can't find any. (link)
I use a Korg. ~$15-20 at pretty much any guitar shop.

I RATE 5s!!!

okk well i play volleyball at my summer camp and the thing is, i'm one of the worst players because it's a more "advanced" volleyball class. we're doing overhands and like everyone can get it..like i can do it but i'm not that good. i need some really good volleyball overhand advice on how to get it over the net. sometimes i hit it high enough but it's not far enough. sometimes i hit it far enough but it's not high enough, sooo yeah

and there's this one girl (a few others too every once in a while, but she's the worst!)..well she's pretty good at volleyball but she ALWAYS picks on me! not in the teasing way, in the bossing around way..like if i do one itsy-bitsy little thing wrong, she says "DO THIS, DO THAT!" and it becomes SO ANNOYING! i don't have the best temper so sometimes i stomp away after she's bossed me around like 20 times..how can i get her to stop? i'm sorry i'm not as good as the other people but she also has to realize i'm one of the youngest players there..i don't know what to do please help!!! (link)
By "overhand" I assume you're talking about serving the ball... here's what you need to know:

To have a successful overhand serve - you have to start with a good toss. Hold your arm up at about the position that you would want to contact the ball - look at where your hand is in relation to your head. That's where you need the ball to be, which means you have to be able to consistently toss the ball so that it gets to that position so you can work on your timing to swing your arm for a good serve. I highly recommend you just spend some time tossing the ball up over and over again - don't worry about hitting it yet.

Next, you need good form - your hand should be open and slightly cupped - you want to make solid contact with the ball initially - don't worry about floaters, top-spin, back-spin, any of that crap... just get a solid contact and hit the ball. When you serve, you first get your toss, after that, you don't watch the ball - you need to look out into the court at where you want the ball to go. After you've hit the ball, follow through on your swing.

As you take your swing, you want to also follow through with your entire body. When I serve, I plant my left foot right against the back line. I rock back on my right leg, which is bent slightly, and thrust my entire body forwards with my right leg as I contact the ball - so that after I've contacted the ball, I take a step onto the court with my right foot. This way, I use the momentum of my entire body to add power to the serve. And by spotting where I want the ball to go, I can not only aim in that direction, but learn to arc the ball appropriately over the net.

As far as the bossy player goes - sadly, they are all over the place. Really, I would hope that the coaches would notice this and address it. Having coached myself, I look for that sort of behavior and try to either get the bossy person to act a little more constructively, or get them to shut their mouth. That, or I make them suffer in a serve-receive drill, because I'm really mean like that... ;)

Dear advice giver,
This morning i woke up and i discovered this unfamiliar lump looking think on my breast. I am only thirteen years old and my period was about 2 weeks ago. I showed some of my family and they said it was nothing bad, or cancerious, they said it could be a bite or a sweat bump, bump im still concerned..... How can you tell if the lump is cancerious or not.. Its not that dark, and its not very big?? Please help!
Sincerely ,
CONCERNED ! (link)
There are a number of differnt things that a bump on the breast can be. First thing to ask yourself is: does it hurt. If this is something that you are certain you didn't have a few days ago, then it is likely not a tumor. Breasts are filled with lots of glands - they can swell as they grow, and having your period can cause swelling in the breasts as well.

When in doubt, though, call your doctor and at least talk to them and see if they think you should come in to have it checked out. It is mostly likely nothing, but it can't hurt to know for certain.

hey i was wondering if it was nomal for me to wt=rite songs at my age we'll just say(11-13) lemme know (link)
I would not say that it is not "normal". I started writing songs when I was about 13/14ish... though in retrospect, they really sucked. But it was fun, I enjoyed it, and it was a great way to start expressing myself in a creative manner.

The employer is overseas and unlikely to be able to check employment history as good as people here.
I heard there is a book called ( how to steal a job ) by Eden Press that tells how to create past three years of busy employment .
Did you read it.
I have gap of work experience out of my hand but I have good experience before that overseas.
So I don't see why some overseas employers insist on US work experience.
Do you have second thoughts? (link)
I personally have problems with that. It is unethical and while it may seem like it is merely a way to increase your odds of getting a job, you'll have to sustain a lie of talking about a job you never had and keeping it consistent. Is that really worth it? I mean, if you eventually slip up in your story and someone catches is, or someone realizes that the experience they though you had simply doesn't exist... you don't think that there will be rammifications for that? You'd certainly lose your job.

As for overseas employers wanting US work experience? Well, it is because, like it or not, the US is viewed as the leaders of the business world, so to have worked here says that you've experienced the magic of powerful US companies, etc etc etc. Yeah, it isn't great, but that is why some of those companies do what they do.

What do I do when pink eye keeps occurring in my 3 year old? (link)
1) Go to the doctor.
2) Pink eye, aka conjunctivitis, is highly contageous and spreads by contact. Is your child exposed to an environment where pink eye continually runs rampant?
3) Are you certain it is pink eye, and not allergies? That is something to consider.

is there any place to find like rock piano tabs for free? like bowling for soup or avril lavigne? any help would be good!
thanx (link)
umm... tablature is for guitars and bass and banjo, etc... fretted instruments...

Piano, you need sheet music, which is not exactly the same thing as tablature.

That said, piano music generally falls under more scrutiny due to copyright enforcement. Tablature can be written off as an academic excercise since it is usually highly inaccurate. But music publishers tend to go apeshit when people start transcribing songs to piano. Legal action ain't fun.

Because of that, you won't find too much sheet music out there for free. Most of what I have seen is also terrible.

does anyone know some sites where i can get guitar tabs? i rate. (link)
www.olga.net

Well I am pretty short for my age. My parents say that if I sleep a lot I will grow. I am a night person, meaning I will go to sleep at 3 or 4 and wake up around 12 or so, and that's on a light day. Now that it's summer I will be going to sleep a lot later, but I will be getting more sleep because I'm gonna be sleeping in and stuff. So, do you think I can grow if I continue to sleep an average of 12 hours most of the time? And if sleeping and growth have no relation, what else can I do? I eat healthy, by the way. (link)
Sleep will affect your growth, but genetics, metabolism, and age will play a larger factor. I mean, if you were meant to be really tall, but slept very little, yes, your growth would be hindered. On the other hand, if you're genetically destined to be short, no amount of sleep is going to magically make you grow.

If you think there's still hope, you should consider trying to get to bed earlier, and making sure you do physical activities to promote your metabolism and allow you to sleep more efficiently.

How can I jazz up my resume by creating a fake work experience .
i want to apply to a job overseas in Public Health.
I have a gap of 3 years after I got MPH degree in US (link)
If you create a fake work experience, you most likely will get caught. I've known people who have tried that in the past and it always comes back to bite them in the ass.

one of my really good friends is anorexic... she just admitted to us ((me n my friends)). We really want her to stop but don't know how, she said she'll talk to us, but i don't know *exactly* what to say to make her realize she needs to stop... now... what should we say???

thx - *troubled friend* (link)
There's not much you can say, really. And the burden of this should not fall upon you. I understand that you want to help - and that's a very good thing. But no one can expect you to find the "answers" and to be able to stop her behavior.

As hard as it may be, the best thing is to let someone of authority know. Be that a teacher, your parents, or even her parents.

While not exactly the same, I had to make a decision when I was 16 on what to do when my at-the-time girlfriend was seriously contemplating suicide. I realized that it was beyond my power to "save her" and so, as hard as it was, I told her father about it - and he was able to get her the help that she needed. -- And it sucked, it was the one of the worst times of my life having to deal with that. But as hard as it was, I think I did the right thing and while it took some time, she realized that I did the right thing, too.

As her friend, the best things you can do are be there as support and continue to be her friend. But the burden of getting her to correct her eating disorder should not be yours - don't try to take that upon yourself.

Good luck.

many people on this site give contradicting advice as far as whether or not sperm dies when it hits the air or not. so let me ask you this, if that were true, would it not be pointless to donate sperm? (masturbating in a cup, and then freezing the sperm, which have been in the air for at least a minute or more) so my question is, can i assume all this advice on sperm dying in the air (and that it is impossible to get pregnant from any means other than sex) incorrect? thanks! (link)
the whole "dying in the air" thing is overblown - for the very reasons you pointed out. There's nothing magical about the air that kills sperm. Temperature and pH have a far greater impact on the viability of the sperm. Sure, there's going to be some practical time limit, but people seem to have little clue about it and like to perpetuate myth over actual fact.

i am in the process of writing some songs. I think that they suck. And i need advice on how i can make them better. I cant ever find anything 2 rhyme with anything. If you get what im saying i need some help or tips on writing songs! (link)
Don't rhyme.

It really can be that simple.

People writing songs get stuck on this whole rhyming stigma where they are totally convinced that all songs must rhyme.

That's crap.

Don't worry about rhyme.

Meter and feel are far more important, as are litterary techniques such as imagery, metaphor, and just having a strong message in the song's lyrics.

I have to ask, by writing songs, do you also have the music written out, at least chord notation?

I was three days late for my period so I took two home pregnacy test and both came up with a very faint postive. I read the test when I was suppose to and the line that comes up when it is done correctly was there and then I got my period. Could I be pregnate or was the pregnacy test wrong? I have two children and never had my period during pregnacy before and have never had a false positive either. Please help! (link)
When initially pregnant, you can experience an irregular menstrual cycle - it will seem like having your period, but will be a bit off the norm. Those pregnancy tests look for a hormone that you only have when you are pregnant - thus you can get a false negative if not enough of the hormone is built up in your system, but you cannot get a false positive. I would guess that you could very well be pregnant, and should schedule with an OB/GYN to be tested using their more accurate test.

Browse my column... seriously...

http://www.advicenators.com/column.php?u=MFS&t=14

I would recommend a classical (nylon string acoustic, basically) for starting out. Easier on the fingers, widely spaced strings, and the sound of a classical kicks ass.

I'm not all that fond of "books" for guitar - most I've seen over the years have really sucked.

I'm big on using tablature to get the basics, knowing how to read music, and knowing how to play by ear.

That said, check out www.olga.net and www.harmony-central.com Both sites have excellent resources on them than can give you a boost when starting out.

I've answered quite a few questions similar to yours, which is why I suggested you browse around in the answers I've given to other music questions - I try to not give a canned answer, and I hate repeating myself, so I try to hit the basics here...

Any by all means, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me directly - I'm always willing to help someone starting out on any instrument.
