okk well i play volleyball at my summer camp and the thing is, i'm one of the worst players because it's a more "advanced" volleyball class. we're doing overhands and like everyone can get it..like i can do it but i'm not that good. i need some really good volleyball overhand advice on how to get it over the net. sometimes i hit it high enough but it's not far enough. sometimes i hit it far enough but it's not high enough, sooo yeah
and there's this one girl (a few others too every once in a while, but she's the worst!)..well she's pretty good at volleyball but she ALWAYS picks on me! not in the teasing way, in the bossing around way..like if i do one itsy-bitsy little thing wrong, she says "DO THIS, DO THAT!" and it becomes SO ANNOYING! i don't have the best temper so sometimes i stomp away after she's bossed me around like 20 times..how can i get her to stop? i'm sorry i'm not as good as the other people but she also has to realize i'm one of the youngest players there..i don't know what to do please help!!!
On the one girl who always tells you what to do we have one of those girls on our team and she really gets annoying but I try and zone her out and just shake it off when I do something wrong and just try harder at it the next time.
say hey i dont tell you what to do and you dont tell me either. shes got no right doing that. and if she keeps doing it just ignore her. and as for tips maybe you could have one of your family or friends. help you. im sure they will.
beachhun101 answered Saturday July 9 2005, 2:33 am: try not doing such an advanced class..tell the girl that you appreciate her advice (i dont think shes trying to be mean), but ask her to stop and you can figure it out on your own. i play volleyball and i used to play club. (my favorite sport). really practice a lot. overhand will come easier to you if you also practice spiking because its the same just farther away. also for more power rotate your hips so you get your whole body into the rotation. hope all this works out. leave a message if you want anymore info on volleyball!<3 [ beachhun101's advice column | Ask beachhun101 A Question ]
swimmergurl54 answered Saturday July 2 2005, 6:31 pm: Ok, I play volleyball, and I have the best over hand serve on my HS team. Be sure to High five the ball and hit it with your palm. make sure to hit it with your entire hand.
Also, Weight Transfer.
if your right handed. put ur left foot forward and step with you right and transfer your weight from your left foot. to your right.

bunsal0t answered Sunday June 26 2005, 6:04 pm: Having problems in volleyball is totally cool and it's just a game? Right? This girl sounds like she is a little princess, I bet her parents give her whatever she likes and she is really liked among her peers. Am I right? She may be really annoying, but maybe you should listen to her advice just once, and if she treats you like you are four, call her on it. Tell her it's okay if your not that great at volleyball, and she doesn't have to be a Nazi about every little thing.
CoRyIzMuHLoVeRaNdFrIeNd answered Sunday June 26 2005, 3:30 pm: I had the same problem before... i was good, but had a terrible overhand serve. Basically, half of the serve is on how good your toss is. Make sure its high and not to far in front of you. You should be able to step right into it and if you're not sure if it is in the right spot, just let it drop and it should fall right next to you. Then toss it, step with the opposite foot you are going to hit the ball with and drag the other foot. Trust me, it helps a lot! My accuracy got so much better, and the ball went faster and farther. Also, make sure you swing your arm as fast as you can when you hit it.
If i was you, id tell her to fuck off, and say somethin like ill do it how i want and its none of your da*n business how i do it, so leave me the he*l alone... i guess. Im in gymnastics and some kids to that to me when theyre better at a event, works for me! Just dont go down without a fight! lol. Have fun with volleyball, its a great sport! Unfortunatly, i had to drop it for Cheerleading... lol... haha, imma a prep... neways, HAVE FUN!!! [ CoRyIzMuHLoVeRaNdFrIeNd's advice column | Ask CoRyIzMuHLoVeRaNdFrIeNd A Question ]
Sporkster answered Sunday June 26 2005, 2:12 pm: The secret to a good overhand serve is all in your toss. Make sure you toss it at just the right height that you can smack it with your flat palm as hard as you can. About a foot or so over your head is a good height. Just practice, practice, practice! Maybe even lift some weights to build up strength in your arms so you can hit it harder and farther.
Oh boy, believe me, I've been annoyed by my team captain many, many a time. My captain is an OK player, but she is definitely not the best. However, she thinks she is. So...yeah. All I can say is simply ignore her if it's something small or petty. If it's something big, think about whether what she's saying could help you improve your game. Don't let your temper get to you, because that'll only make things worse. And if you ignore her, over time she'll see that what she says has no effect on you and she'll just give up.

K6485 answered Sunday June 26 2005, 1:23 am: Hey, I play volleyball too! :) so i went thru the same thing as you are going thru now. Find someone on your team that is good at it and ask them 4 help. but dont ask your teammate that is bossy. she wont help much. another option is: go to your coach and ask her for some help individually or just during practice. I mean, thats what the coach is there for right? to teach you. maybe you and him/her cud set up a time to work on your overhand hits. If you have any more questions, e-mail me at MyGoodies6485@aol.com I will be glad to answer any more questions that you have about volleyball. [ K6485's advice column | Ask K6485 A Question ]
LifesBaffledBeauty answered Sunday June 26 2005, 1:04 am: Well as far as your "bossy pants" player unfortunatly there will be those types of people everywhere you go its life ...sad i know. Just tell her off one time and No Fighting!!! she should get the picture after that if not well its happens. That is just the type of person i am so yea.
Overhand takes a while. You ever play softball? well its kinda like throwing a ball. Well try this... hold the arm you arent using up above your head toss the ball up and it should go right above your finger tips .... then its timing and strength from there, strength will come with age..but timing is very important. You should hit the ball with the palm of you hand. It takes practice. I hope i helped. Good luck and have fun! [ LifesBaffledBeauty's advice column | Ask LifesBaffledBeauty A Question ]
MFS answered Sunday June 26 2005, 12:16 am: By "overhand" I assume you're talking about serving the ball... here's what you need to know:
To have a successful overhand serve - you have to start with a good toss. Hold your arm up at about the position that you would want to contact the ball - look at where your hand is in relation to your head. That's where you need the ball to be, which means you have to be able to consistently toss the ball so that it gets to that position so you can work on your timing to swing your arm for a good serve. I highly recommend you just spend some time tossing the ball up over and over again - don't worry about hitting it yet.
Next, you need good form - your hand should be open and slightly cupped - you want to make solid contact with the ball initially - don't worry about floaters, top-spin, back-spin, any of that crap... just get a solid contact and hit the ball. When you serve, you first get your toss, after that, you don't watch the ball - you need to look out into the court at where you want the ball to go. After you've hit the ball, follow through on your swing.
As you take your swing, you want to also follow through with your entire body. When I serve, I plant my left foot right against the back line. I rock back on my right leg, which is bent slightly, and thrust my entire body forwards with my right leg as I contact the ball - so that after I've contacted the ball, I take a step onto the court with my right foot. This way, I use the momentum of my entire body to add power to the serve. And by spotting where I want the ball to go, I can not only aim in that direction, but learn to arc the ball appropriately over the net.
As far as the bossy player goes - sadly, they are all over the place. Really, I would hope that the coaches would notice this and address it. Having coached myself, I look for that sort of behavior and try to either get the bossy person to act a little more constructively, or get them to shut their mouth. That, or I make them suffer in a serve-receive drill, because I'm really mean like that... ;) [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
