Sleeping and Growth?

Question Posted Monday June 20 2005, 9:01 pm

Well I am pretty short for my age. My parents say that if I sleep a lot I will grow. I am a night person, meaning I will go to sleep at 3 or 4 and wake up around 12 or so, and that's on a light day. Now that it's summer I will be going to sleep a lot later, but I will be getting more sleep because I'm gonna be sleeping in and stuff. So, do you think I can grow if I continue to sleep an average of 12 hours most of the time? And if sleeping and growth have no relation, what else can I do? I eat healthy, by the way.

Sleeping a lot won't help you THAT much in the means of additional height; it's Really all in the genetics. ARe youR paRents tall??? And if you have oldeR siblings, that's a good indication of how tall you will be about. And you neveR mentioned youR age heRe, but I'm willing to bet you aRe definitely NOT done gRowing -- it's Really all a waiting game, soRRie, Kid... :)

Know what? I used to tell my kids that so they'd go to bed. You will grow regardless of how much you sleep, though I'm sure it helps a little. Eat right, get plenty of exercise. You will do fine my fellow night owl. :)

Sleep will affect your growth, but genetics, metabolism, and age will play a larger factor. I mean, if you were meant to be really tall, but slept very little, yes, your growth would be hindered. On the other hand, if you're genetically destined to be short, no amount of sleep is going to magically make you grow.

If you think there's still hope, you should consider trying to get to bed earlier, and making sure you do physical activities to promote your metabolism and allow you to sleep more efficiently.

Getting a lot of sleep really does help your growth a LOT, but it's also dependent on the time that you fall asleep. Most of the time, your brain needs rest and slows its functioning at around 10:00, so if at all possible, you should try to sleep at that time. You waking up late in the afternoon, (12) is your body's way of telling you that you aren't getting to sleep early enough. If you try hitting the sack just a little earlier, you may see a lot of difference in your height and your overall healthiness. (It also helps boost your metabolism which eventually makes you thinner!!) Also, exercise increases the flow of oxygen in the blood, so try going out for a jog early in the morning when the air is crisp and clean. =]
