MandiThompson<3 answered Friday July 22 2005, 2:41 pm: Go to www.tabcrawler.com They teach you how to read and play tabs and they explain what pauses are, ect. They have tabs for some of my favorite songs and bands so they could probably help you out. It's free and that's how I taught myself how to play. Also, I would start out with an acoustic guitar. They're cheap. I got my first Fender acoustic for $150. You'll get comfortable with an acoustic and then warm up to an electric guitar. Acoustics are also not as loud as electrics so you won't drive your parents insane. Almost all of my friends who play guitar started out acoustic because it gives you a sense of, "Do I really wanna play guitar??" Hope I helped!! danexmachina answered Saturday July 9 2005, 7:35 am: don't buy books. any tab you could need is online somewhere for free. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is the best guitar tab site available, it should have any song you're looking for. buy an electric guitar because it's easier to press down the strings and the frets are smaller, so a first-timer will have less difficulty. i'd recommend starting off with green day songs, or something punkish in general, as they'll help you learn speed and the chords are usually very easy. i've been playing guitar for 8 years self-taught, and it takes at least 2 to fully get a handle on everything. don't force yourself to practice too much, just do it when you're feeling into it, at least twice or three times a week. jade answered Friday July 1 2005, 7:10 pm: if you have an alto's music near you i would go there. they have a ton of music books for all different levels.
i'm trying to teach myself guitar also and i'm starting out with guitar method book 1 and 2.
it comes with a cd so that you can hear the songs and play along with them for each lesson.
also it's really great because it starts off showing you how to tune the guitar and the notes on each string and then it just progresses from there.
also, when you get into chords it starts off with simple chords and as you get further into the book, it gives you the more advanced version.
oh, and start with acoustic. i've found it easier to learn on then an electric and i've also heard from a lot of people that play that it's better to learn on then an electric
stalkingroxy911 answered Friday June 24 2005, 11:33 am: electric is better if you are trying to get into a band but what my friends are doing is learning on the accoustic and then going electric but think that is because her mom thinks that she is loud enough with out the amp. but i would start with the electic guitar just because i think it is better!
Kr4z3y_Ch3lly answered Wednesday June 15 2005, 9:38 pm: basically what you do is go to google and type in "how to play the guitar" or something related to that. then after you learn the strings and stuff like that then you start pulling up Tabs. (the notes to playing songs). my brother self-taught himself so i know about this stuff. hed show me what he did etc.
here are some sites but you can look yourself also:
I would recommend a classical (nylon string acoustic, basically) for starting out. Easier on the fingers, widely spaced strings, and the sound of a classical kicks ass.
I'm not all that fond of "books" for guitar - most I've seen over the years have really sucked.
I'm big on using tablature to get the basics, knowing how to read music, and knowing how to play by ear.
That said, check out www.olga.net and www.harmony-central.com Both sites have excellent resources on them than can give you a boost when starting out.
I've answered quite a few questions similar to yours, which is why I suggested you browse around in the answers I've given to other music questions - I try to not give a canned answer, and I hate repeating myself, so I try to hit the basics here...
Any by all means, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me directly - I'm always willing to help someone starting out on any instrument. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
Ronlina answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 11:44 pm: Just to add to the advice already given to you...
The most important thing you can do with learning any instrament is learning how to play using your ear. This means recognizing the sounds you're making - even if you can't read the music yet. The best tthing you can do before you even start lessons or diving into notes is learning how to remember where the sounds are when you use the guitar. Don't worry so much about where your hands are at first, and make up your own little songs. Eventually, you'll be making up more complicated ones on your own.
This is really the best thing in the world you could do.
To find out about tuning, there are good places on the web (search in google) that will tell you basic stuff such as what the strings on the guitar should be tuned to.
Acoustics can be more difficult (sometimes) at first than electric because you often need to press down harder - but are also a lot cheaper than electric most of the time, if you just get an acoustic with nylon(plastic-looking) strings often found as 'beginner' guitars. It's my suggestion that you go with acoustic first because you'll be able to practice anywhere, anytime - and also will get much better once you get the hang of it because you started out having to train your fingers with an acoustic, and also because if you find that guitar just isn't your thing, you haven't wasted as much money.
GothicFreak2765 answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 9:48 pm: First thing: Lots and lots of picks. I go through like 4 picks a week so you need alot of picks.
Heres a few sites that are very basic stuff [i.e. Parts of guitar, basic chords etc.]
orphans answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 7:10 pm: Hey, Well i would definantly start with an acoustic because they are cheaper and you dont want to spend a ton of money on something you arent sure you're going to enjoy, the way i learned was by a book called : Basic Instructor, Guitar Vol. 1, by Jerry Snyder! eventually i moved on to volume 2! also there is a series of book and CD's called: 10 easy steps, and they come in any instrument...get the one that says guitar...lol! but i like the 10 easy steps better b/c it comes with a CD that helps you to know if you are playin it right! Dont forget that you will also need a guitar case, a tuner, and alot of picks!...hope i helped...Brittney [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
Sporkster answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 6:24 pm: If I were you, I'd get lessons to start out with. That way you could get hands-on information, learn the basics, etc. so you could build on that and teach yourself the rest. But, if you don't want to, that's fine as well.
Try going to musicnotes.com and downloading Guitar Guru if you want to see a few samples of songs. It shows you the tempo, how to position your fingers, how to play certain notes, etc. They've also included a tuner (but it only for the normal EADGBE tuning). It's a cool little program for beginners, but I wouldn't just go by this.
Head to your local McFadyen, Pearson, or Duncan Music Company and look for some self-instruction books on how to play guitar. They even have books like that at Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, the Ink-Stand, etc. They'll probably have quite a few books to choose from--just flip through the pages and find one that has illustrations, photos, good explanations of everything, a list of chords, etc.
I'd probably learn how to play acoustic, or classic guitar first. You can play a wider variety of songs and you actually learn how to play a guitar. I'm currently learning to play on my dad's classic (Goya). I like the Ibanez acoustics, but I don't particularly like Fenders. Research and find a guitar that's right for you, though. You're going to be the one playing it.
I hope this may have helped you a little bit, but if you really want <i>kick ass</i> guitar advice, ask MFS.
