I'm a violist / artist / programmer who can't make up her mind about her major in college. Too many choices, all of them good. I know that computer science will be in there, but beyond that I'm not positive.
I love Veggie Tales and want to go into computer animation. Someday. Other dreams include playing a concerto with a professional orchestra and going to Europe and visiting all the cool art museums.
I'm pretty good with computer hardware issues, having built my own computer from scratch. I also know a bit of troubleshooting, so I'll give it my best shot.
The only job I've ever held is that of a lifeguard, and I've been doing that for almost three years now.
In addition to all this, I'm learning to be a pretty decent Ramen noodle chef.
I'll do my best to answer any questions you would like to ask. :)

I'm thinking of selling my old computer. It's a 486 with 4 megabytes of RAM running windows 3.11. How much should I be asking for it? (link)
|
d00d, I'd give you the $10 for it. I have very fond memories of our old Zeos 486 running Windows 3.1.
Of course, unless you're a really huge computer nerd like myself, no one's really going to want it. Double that if it's a desktop. You might convince someone to take a laptop. 'Course, laptops back in that day were rather large and klunky, but what do you want?
If no one will take it, deconstruct it and make an art project out of it. Or give it to an artist who will. Art departments everywhere are usually looking for random junk to turn into works of art.

Um.. like on wordpad, how can you take text and put it into a box? like have a category heading or whatever in a small box? (link)
|
WordPad is major suckage as a word processor.
Microsoft Word will do this for you, but you have to pay for it. I don't reccommend this. Either find a pirated copy, or go the legal alternative and use OpenOffice (available http://www.openoffice.org), which is a free open source word processor. I built my computer, so it didn't come with Word, and I use OpenOffice for all my papers. It has the official DWH stamp of approval. :)

My Computer will not read the M drive. The Computer will come on but Windows will not come up. I put the recovery disk in and it will still not work. What can i do. (link)
|
I would suggest calling customer service for whoever made your PC. If there's nothing you can do to fix it, try formatting the hard-drive and starting over. If that still doesn't work, you might have to replace the hard drive. Don't worry, hard-drive replacement isn't nearly as scary as it sounds. And if you're not comfortable doing it, you can easily find someone who will.

Hey my firewire drive just got curropted and well I have an important project on so is there any way I can override or gain the work back? (link)
|
First, I'd need some more information:
1. Is this a PC or a Mac we're working with?
2. Desktop or laptop?
3. Firewire drive, specifically, or just a firewire CARD?
If you have a laptop, you're just going to have to take it to a repair shop and have them deal with it, unless you're really good with computers and love working in very small spaces.
If it's a Mac, you'll probably have to do that anyway, if I recall correctly.
If it's a PC desktop, you ought to be able to just replace the firewire card and you ought to be able to access the data once more.
If I'm wrong, someone come and correct me. I don't work much with Macs, but they don't make those machines so you can take them apart and tinker with them (hence why I work with PCs- playing with computer hardware is fun). In any case, if all else fails, just take it to a computer store and see what they can do for you.

Is it wrong to wait on a person? I mean, if you're not sure that you would even end up with this person. I mean, there are things that make it seem like you would, or that there is a definent possability...Ah. Help. (link)
|
It's not wrong to wait on a person, but don't let that blind you to other possibilities, either. I guess it all depends on how patient you are- hang on, it could be a long wait. Some long waits, however, are well worth it.

i have a friend i trust with my life. or at least i DID. it turns out he doesn't trust me one bit. i even called him my older brother! i can't seem to get over it and i am really pissed off. he says he's sorry, but i don't know what's true anymore. how do i know if he's truthful to me as i used to be to him? (link)
|
When you lose trust in a person, it's also losing faith in a person. There's no quantifier to be able to tell if a person is trustworthy. I have a friend that I also trust with my life (I call him the brother I never got in real life), and he also managed to break my trust. On a couple of occasions. I choose to trust him now because I know when he apologizes that he's sincere.
So the question for you is- Do you believe he was sincere?
Two cases to examine:
Case One: He's sincere. You decide never to trust him again. Now you've just lost the friendship of the person you called a brother. However, if he was sincere, you give it another try, and likely end up better friends because of it.
Case Two: He's not sincere. You decide to trust him. It comes back and bites you again. You (hypothetically) decide not to trust him again.
There's no way to know for absolutely certain, but, as a good book of mine said, "Trust is always an act of faith."

Just so you know, I will be ETERNALLY GRATEFUL if you answered this, I REALLY need help on this matter...
There is a boy in my school. He is studly and flirty and *appears* to be a good guy. I used to admire him (NOT as a crush or anything, just as a person), but now I'm not so sure. This year, we are both freshman and happen to be in most of the same classes. He is kind to me and I apperciate that, but a few weeks ago he asked me what the homework in French class was. I told him and he asked me to see my workbook so he would know what pages to do (keeping in mind that this is the class right before French!) me, being the idiot that I am, gave it to him without question and he eventually gave it back. I was expecting it to be over but it wasn't. At least twice a week he would ask me for my workbook and I would continue to give it to him. One day, though, I was absent and hadn't yet gotten the homework for French and he asked me for my book. I explained that I wasn't there to get it and thus didn't have it done. He looked at me and there was disappointment in his eyes and voice, but that's not what threw me off. What really got me going (although I didn't show it at the time) was the fact that he said: "oh... it's ok then" as if he were FORGIVING me for not doing my homework so he could copy it! I'm angry at him, but I'm afraid if I tell him off then he'll do something nasty (spread a rumor, make fun of me, etc). But then if I don't tell him off, he'll just keep taking advantage of me! What should I do? (link)
|
Tell him you know what game he's playing. Then kick him, and tell him he can never see your notebook again.
Whack him on the head with said notebook for good measure, then turn and walk away.

All of my freinds have guys that like them and their all going out and everything. As far as I know nobody likes me. How can I find out if anyone does? Or how can I get somone to like me. Its verry annoying when all of my freinds are always going out and I'm always at home. (link)
|
I went through this phase my sophomore year of high school, when my best friend had a couple of boyfriends and I remained 100% single. I had just come out of a bad experience with a guy, and I just wanted a nice guy to chill and do stuff with. I talked myself into liking this one guy (who, the next two years would be my stand partner in orchestra), but it was NOT the best idea. a) As I got to know him, it became apparent we would drive each other insane. b) He had this tendency to be an arrogant little prick, which took me a few months to discover.
You can go ahead and start scoping guys out, but save yourself some heartbreak and get to know them first.
Guys can be really good friends. Dating isn't even really important until you're at college, and even there it's not paramount (after all, you're paying out your ears to be learning). So don't feel like you have to be dating now.

I have a friend who's about to be initiated into Wicca. I know what Wicca's about, and that's mainly why I've been hoping he wouldn't. He's getting initiated on Saturday, and I'm really worried. Is there anything I can do to talk him out of it in five days?!? (link)
|
Honestly, no matter how little you like it, it's not your place to talk him out of it. Furthermore, attempts to talk him out of it are likely to make him even more determined to be initiated. Basically, you have little to no power in this situation. Your friend is obviously old enough to make his own decisions. It's somewhat of an insult to him to take that right away from him.
You can let him know your opinion- nicely! Once that's been done, you're out of the loop.

I'm always turning my monitor off to save electricity. Lately sometimes when I come back and turn it back on, it doesn't come on. I mean, the power light lights up and everything, but the screen stays back until I unplug it and plug it back in. I move the mouse and hit the keys and nothing fixes it. It's been happening more and more lately... is my monitor about to turn to dirt or should I just get a switch on the power cable so it's easier to unplug and plug in? (link)
|
The old CRT monitor of my dad's has done this for, oh... four years now. The unplugging and plugging in thing seems to be the only way. So yeah, a switch on the power cable might make things easier. I doubt your monitor's about to kick it.
Some monitors live longer than they have any right to, anyway, no matter how bad the quality gets. We had a 13" CRT monitor that came with a Zeos 386 computer (yeah, Zeos doesn't even EXIST anymore...), and I believe the stupid thing still functions.
...so I wouldn't worry about the lifespand of your monitor too much.

Ok, I'm in college and I want the fine ladies to know they are fine and that I know they are fine. How do I go about this? (link)
|
Don't come on to hard. Treat them like ladies. Open doors for them if the oppertunity presents itself. But don't like, follow her back to her dorm. That's creepy. Trust me on this one.
Also- don't call every night if you don't have a reason to. That's also really creepy. It could make a girl live on the edge of paranoia. You may find out a month later that every time the phone rang she was tempted to dive under her desk for cover, for fear it would be you calling, and she'd never get off the phone.
Believe me, this is the voice of experience talking. Stalkers, even ones who don't mean to be stalkers and have no ill intentions, are creepy and annoying. Please don't be one.

so i like this guy. teh only problm is that he is an atheist and i am a christian. but we talk all the time n he makes me laugh. i cant explain it we just click. will the whole religion thing be a bg deal? (link)
|
I tend to think that if you don't share the same faith, that's a pretty basic thing to share. And if you can't share that, in the end, what do you have? Even my roommate agrees with me on this point, and she's not a Christian. You should definitely stick to your own faith for dating relationships. This isn't to say you can't be friends, in fact, I strongly encourage the friendship!
But yes, the religion should be a big deal for you. Maybe not for him, but it should be for you. I can't even imagine dating someone who doesn't believe in any of the same things I do. It can be the cause of much strife- like I recall being offended when one of my guy friends blew off my Bible study as unimportant (since I wouldn't skip it to go to a concert with him and his friends). Honestly, you'll be happier in the long run if you two are just friends.

I'm going on a three day camping trip and want to pack a first aid kit, but it's gotta be really small. What are some of the more important things for me to carry? I really don't get injured much so I'm not that worried, it's mostly that everyone around me is like "you GOTTA have a first aid kit" and all that. (link)
|
The standard band-aids and neosporin, along with gauze and medical tape are a must. Get the kind of medical tape that's easy-tear so you don't have to bring scissors. A small bottle of hydrogen peroxide and some cotton squares would be good. I also reccommend bringing a pair of latex gloves in case of some injury including lots of blood. You may not get injured that bad, but maybe someone around you will. And wearing gloves helps to avoid the transfer of bloodbourne pathogens.
Here's what's included in my first aid kit (it's an American Red Cross Lifeguard kit) a rescue sheet (in case of shock or if you get lost it reflects light and radar), a triangular bandage, sunscreen, bandaids, gauze, smelling salts, medical tape, latex gloves, and a supplementary oxygen-ready pocket mask. The Red Cross sells several sizes and varieties of first aid kits, so I strongly suggest you head over to your local chapter and buy one there.

no one visits my website. i submitted it to the search engines and everything, and I think it's pretty good content-wise. any ideas on how I can get more visitors? (link)
|
Go around signing other peoples' guestbooks, particularly people with sites like yours. Try to get a few affiliated sites. If you wind up with an affiliates more popular than you, you can get a lot of hits through them. I have more than 20 affiliates for my site, I think. It's good for all sites involved. Join webrings, too. And banner exchanges. I'm only plugged into the Star Wars fanpage realm, but those are the methods we use.

how can I keep my computer case from being so disgustingly dusty on the inside all the time? is the dust even that bad for it? I mean, I think my fans make more noise when they're full of dust, but the parts work okay. (link)
|
A can of compressed air can be your best friend. Just use it to blow out all the dust, and you should be fine.

I'm a girl, and I kinda like to bake stuff, because hey, it means I get desert. My question is this: I work with all guys. If I bake cookies or something and bring them into work, are the guys going to stop feeling like I'm "one of them" and start seeing me as this betty crocker homemaker type? We're all pretty laid back now, on the same level and everything, I don't want it to get weird. (link)

In my experience, people who bring food are appreciated by all, whether they be male or female. For instance, a guy in my dorm holds cake parties every week where he bakes a cake, then we all help him eat it. I don't think it really affects his masculinity. As a general rule, food == good.

What's a good way to meet new people? (link)
|
I'll tell you what's NOT good way to meet people. Here's a story for you...
When I went to a Women in Computer Science program a couple of years ago, our floor counselor told all the girls in my program that we had to be more social, i.e. we couldn't all sit at one table, and we couldn't sit in our hallway playing Spades during free time all the time. So we broke up into subgroups of our big group, and my group kind of surrounded the door. We said "hi" to every person that walked in, and explained that our counselor was making us try to make new friends.
We didn't make any friends this way. Actually, people just thought we were freaks.
The people who were friends outside my program that week were people I met our first night there when there wasn't a lot of room and we wound up sitting at the same table. Just try talking to people, and find out if you have anything in common. You may be surprised by the results.

why do people get big fancy liquid cooling systems for their PCs? Is it really because they're overclocking like mad and must have state-of-the-art cooling at all costs, or do they just want it to look cool with their neon lights and window kits? (link)
|
Some of it depends on how warm it is in the area your computer's in. Fast processers get really, really hot. And when they get too hot, they overload and your whole computer shuts down (trust me, I have experience with this one). A lot of it, though, is just to see if you CAN. It's not about whether it's the most efficient way to cool, or if you really NEED liquid nitrogen to cool your computer (and yes, I have seen that done), but it's the challenge of actually doing it. I have a computer with a clear acrylic door, and a lot of my parts light up. Why? Because it looks nifty, and the computer is irrefutably home made. And since I can point to all the parts and say what they are and what their specs are, nobody questions the fact that I built it.
Some of it's because the computer needs to be cooled. But there are fans designed for overclocking. Liquid cooling systems are there because they're cool and it's fun to be able to say you have one.

Being of a very scientific bent, I'd like to go to college at a technical school. However, every one of these school I read about seems very traditional, with sororities, fraternities, and lots of drinking. They never talk about how liberal the student body is or how much activism there is on campus. Do you know of any quirky, liberal technical schools with character, preferably somewhere in or around the northeast? (link)
|
I thought about going to a tech school for a while. As it turned out, though, while I'm majoring in computer science, a tech school wasn't the right kind of school for me at all. Maybe you should look at a small liberal arts college.
**begin shameless plug**
If you like a lot of character, Oberlin College has character coming out its ears. I ought to know, I live here. There are varying degrees of vegetarians/vegans, organizations for just about EVERYTHING, and if it doesn't exist, you can start it yourself. It's a very artistic community, yet the math and science-like departments are extremely good as well. It's in the midwest, but it's on the eastern side of the midwest, so it's not TOO bad. Check out http://www.oberlin.edu if you're interested in more info.
**end shameless plug**
So yeah. Don't limit yourself to technical schools. Most of the REALLY crazy people are artists, so a liberal arts school might be a better fit for you.

So I was walking this evening and I accidently stepped into some kerosene. I just shrug it off and keep walking with my jazz hands lookin' all cool when this guy runs by and yells "That building is on fire!" So I start running towards it all like "yeah, who's your hero now?" with my jazz hands, looking cool. I get next to the firy part and my shoes are on fire randomly. Now I'm on a laptop someone gave me. What should I do?! (link)
|
I suggest smothering the flame with some flame-retardant material. Water may be of limited usefulness as kerosene is an oil, and water will not dissolve oil. It might not help.
Other than that, you could scream and see if someone notices.
