monitor weirdness

Question Posted Sunday November 2 2003, 7:00 pm

I'm always turning my monitor off to save electricity. Lately sometimes when I come back and turn it back on, it doesn't come on. I mean, the power light lights up and everything, but the screen stays back until I unplug it and plug it back in. I move the mouse and hit the keys and nothing fixes it. It's been happening more and more lately... is my monitor about to turn to dirt or should I just get a switch on the power cable so it's easier to unplug and plug in?

It could be the monitor cable going or the monitor. Most monitors life span is 7-10 years. It could also be the video card connection, if you do have a video card.

The old CRT monitor of my dad's has done this for, oh... four years now. The unplugging and plugging in thing seems to be the only way. So yeah, a switch on the power cable might make things easier. I doubt your monitor's about to kick it.

Some monitors live longer than they have any right to, anyway, no matter how bad the quality gets. We had a 13" CRT monitor that came with a Zeos 386 computer (yeah, Zeos doesn't even EXIST anymore...), and I believe the stupid thing still functions.

...so I wouldn't worry about the lifespand of your monitor too much.

I had an NEC SyncMaster 14" that did that all throughout its natural life. Never got better or worse for five years... gave it away and it's still working as far as I know. It may just be a quirk of your setup... but if it's getting to you I don't know what to do about it.
