many people on this site give contradicting advice as far as whether or not sperm dies when it hits the air or not. so let me ask you this, if that were true, would it not be pointless to donate sperm? (masturbating in a cup, and then freezing the sperm, which have been in the air for at least a minute or more) so my question is, can i assume all this advice on sperm dying in the air (and that it is impossible to get pregnant from any means other than sex) incorrect? thanks! <3

But their theory is very incorrect. Sure, a few sperm may die but not all of it. [ xXxpinky615xXx's advice column | Ask xXxpinky615xXx A Question ]

Inside the body the sperm are alive for much longer and are therefore viable for a longer duration. Once the sperm becomes dry it is safe to say that they are no longer living. Sperm are very determined little creatures. Active sperm placed near the vagina can find their way into the body to fertilize the ovum. Pregnancy can and does happen this way.
Semen dries up when it is exposed to air. As it does, the sperm will be neutralized and die. Washing your hands with soap and water will also get rid of the active sperm. This would be a good practice to get into if you and your partner are going to engage in digital stimulation (fingering). Hand washing also helps prevent the spread of bacteria and other germs.

Temperature and pH have a far greater impact on the viability of the sperm. Sure, there's going to be some practical time limit, but people seem to have little clue about it and like to perpetuate myth over actual fact. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
