In high school, we get to choose which language we want to take- French or Spanish. I signed up for Spanish, but I'm having second thoughts. I like French a lot more, but I want to do what's best for me. Does anyone have any pros or cons for taking a certain language, or just general advice on what I should do? Thanks!
SuGaRuSh3810 answered Saturday April 2 2005, 12:51 pm: Personally, I dont care which language you take, because the choices you're choosing from are very benificial. You can use Spanish more after you use it because if you visit other countries you'll be able to know what they're saying. But then again French is good too because if you ever go to Canada, some Canadians speak French. Both of them are really good, but I suggest that you take spanish because its more benificial and more people know the language, and as far as i'm concerned, mexicans are invading the united states as we speak. But seriously, if you take French, that wouldnt be too bad too. Who knows, maybe you'll be an interpreter when you grow up -- they pay a lot of money for jobs like that. I hope I helped.
evilgogeta answered Friday April 1 2005, 5:19 pm: I did french in school and hated it. It's a boring subject and you won't really need it (the french are very good at english). I'm told that people enjoy spanish more. If I had to do pick one i'd go with spanish. [ evilgogeta's advice column | Ask evilgogeta A Question ]
feverdancer03 answered Friday April 1 2005, 12:13 am: WEll im in 8th grade ad im taking spanish, and i think its fun. I was having the same probs you are but i wen with spanish cuz my friends did lol, any way. A good thing about spanish is that there are a lot of cognates, which means there are a lot of spanish words that soud like english ones....so its kinda easier. Also, many of the caribean islands, mexico, etc all speak spenish, so when u get older and become and adult and travle more, and go to those places, as do many people, it might be more interesting to see what you can speak and understand. If you take french, there might not be as many chances to use it. Spanish is more common, unless you want to be alittl emore different you an take french. Just whatever you think sounds more interesting to you, being bilangual is great! im bilangual goin on trilangual if you count spanish. Hope i helped! Sporkster answered Thursday March 31 2005, 8:39 pm: Stay with Spanish. I assume you live in the United States? If so, taking Spanish is CRUCIAL. Over the next few years, Hispanics are going to amount to almost 50% of the United States population, and you're going to need Spanish to communicate with people EVERYWHERE. Spanish would be much more useful than French, so I would definitely stick with that. But, what does my opinion matter? I guess overall stick with the one you think will be of most use to you. SouthernGirl323 answered Thursday March 31 2005, 7:47 pm: spanish is a more widely spoken language. french is used mostly in france (duh) and in quebec and one or two south american countries. whereas spanish is spoken in the rest of the south and central american countries. overall spanish will be more useful to you in the long run. :) [ SouthernGirl323's advice column | Ask SouthernGirl323 A Question ]

xASH answered Thursday March 31 2005, 6:45 pm: You should take the language you would enjoy more because it would make it easier to learn. If you aren't really interested in taking spanish, then you shouldn't because it's generally harder to learn something that you have no interest in. [ xASH's advice column | Ask xASH A Question ]

karenR answered Thursday March 31 2005, 5:07 pm: I've always heard that spanish is easier to learn but I don't know if this is fact. I don't speak any other language but I can tell you what I have heard. By the way, if you like French it may be easier for you to learn it.Do what you like most of all.
I worked one time with an older hispanic gentleman who told me that all these people who take Spanish in school aren't learning the true languge. He claimed that if you went to Mexico you would find that it was mostly useless! I don't know how true that is.
I do know that my daughter in law told me (she's hispanic) that her brother flunked Spanish in high school, and she never took it. Her father speaks very little English so the older gentleman may have been right. After all DIL's brother heard Spanish every day but didn't pass the class. Possibly he just didn't study enough I really don't know.
LisaLeilani answered Thursday March 31 2005, 4:56 pm: if you take spanish it would be more vaulable since spanish is probally like hte 3rd most spoken lang. in the United States.. but taking french will make you stand out if you put it on a college application since most schools only offer spanish... Or you can take one in school then during hte summer take the other and see which one you like better hten next year you could either go into spanish 2 or french 2..

Siren_Cytherea answered Thursday March 31 2005, 4:45 pm: Hey, I took French for seven years because my school didn't offer Spanish, and I honestly love the language. I think it's easier than Spanish.
However, there are a lot of places in which Spanish is in fact the second language, moreso than French.
I think if you like French better, you should take French. If you like Spanish, take Spanish. I really think it should be what you like, not what you "should" take.
I went to public school for two years (kindergarten and first grade) and took spanish for those two years. I didn't finish it, but I know enough to know that French and Spanish do have similarities. I can understand some Spanish because of its similarities with French.
I also like French because I'm a singer - there are a lot more art songs (classical songs, like opera stuff) written in French than there are in Spanish, and it helps a lot to be able to understand what you're singing. That's most of my reasoning, anyway.
I hope this helps a little!

xOtWiXi answered Thursday March 31 2005, 4:27 pm: Hey!
I faced this little problem in 7th grade and actually now a little bit lol!
Spanish- what I take- is a better choice if you are interested in a career in law, medicine, and/or science. The advantage is its used more in the USA than French, and used more worldwide.
French- It's extremely fun! I loved it! It's good to know because you never know when you'll need to know it, or just take it for fun.
Either one is easy to grasp, Spanish however, does have less accent marks lol. I chose Spanish because I felt that I could use it more in everyday life, but it was a hard choice, and I'm sure either one really would have worked out. Choose from your heart- it's what I did! HOPE I'VE HELPED ♥ [ xOtWiXi's advice column | Ask xOtWiXi A Question ]

More and more countries are making Spanish their main language. Second languages are so good to know. Either way, you'll be able to travel to great places! I think if you really like French, take it! I know people who take it, that love it! So, do what you truly WANT! Dont do it for any paticular reason or a paticular person &hearts! DrSaLi087 answered Thursday March 31 2005, 4:12 pm: Four years ago I had the same issue. French... or Spanish? I would suggest taking a long look at your reasons for each. In these instances, I enjoy coming up with a pro-con list. While corny and old-fashioned, they've only lasted this long because they are successful. Also take into consideration which will benefit you more in the future. I live in a place where Spanish is the second language, so in the long run it will benefit me more to learn Spanish. Do you have any future dreams about living in France? Spain? No matter what you choose, it's not as if you can't ever learn another language in the future. You can spend your highschool years learning French and your college years learning Spanish! [ DrSaLi087's advice column | Ask DrSaLi087 A Question ]
