Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

Ok so I have no idea what to get everyone for christmas! The age range im shopping for is anywhere between 11-my parents. Does anyone has any idea what to get somebody???

For people who I am friend with, but not close enough to spend a lot of money on, I buy them a bunch of candy and a small gift.

Usually I'll go someplace cheap like wal-mart or the dollar store and buy around $20-30$ worth of different bags of individually wrapped candies. Then, depending on how many friends I plan on giving candy to, I buy that many mini-bags (or I decorate brown paper lunch bags). I divide up the candy so everybody gets the same amount of each candy. Then I make sure to put at least one pack of gum in each bag (even if it's those 5-piece packs that you can get in groups of 10 or so).
I also try to buy them each something individualized such as a beanie baby or something cute.
It's a fun gift that everyone likes (who doesn't like candy?!), and it's not too expensive, either.

As for family and close friends, you should know what they like!
If you don't have much money, you can make them scrapbooks with pictures of you together. You can also make them a coupon book of 12 coupons - one for everyone month of the year. Offer 12 services. Such as, if you have a neighbor with a child, you can offer them 2 hours of free babysitting or something. You can offer your parents one day of cleaning the house, one day of you cooking a meal, etc.

Now I have come to the final stage of my life, because all the decisions I have taken in my life is wrong. Also I can’t say all of them are wrong because I had some obstacles and it came from my family. Even I can’t go with my decision and also I can’t ignore my family. No one understood me in my life. I am having a good career but career is not all in life as I haven’t found a peaceful day in my life. I have lost all my happiness when I came to abroad. I have tried to get back to my country but my parents didn’t let get back. So I have decided to suicide in life. Everyone I know in my surroundings betrayed with me. I assumed if I get married I will be satisfied and finally I got married with a greedy girl 3 moths ago who has destroyed my life and I am getting divorce soon. I have tried to manage her but she was impossible for me now people in this bloody world will point out me as a bad one. I feel sorry for my parents as they have tried a lot for me. I think I am getting mentally sick. GOD please…take me off from this world….I need to sleep forever and ever. Please please please. But I will miss my little brother, he is really cute. I love him so much. Is it possible to get die while I am sleeping? I have hurt myself a lot and that’s why I don’t want to hurt myself anymore. I don’t understand, why GOD sent me to this world if GOD can’t let me live happily in this selfish world.

I see that there is a lot of turmoil in your life, but ending it is not the way to go.
So many things happen to people that cause us a lot of hurt and pain, but what we don't realize is that, eventually, it will get better. Our hearts will mend and the pain will soon go away.

4 years ago, my friends and I were out drinking at a party. I was the least drunk, and although I was only 13, they wanted me to drive. I didn't want to drive, though, because I knew I was a poor driver anyway, and being under the influence would make it worse. I tossed my best friend the keys, she drove herself home while the rest of us grabbed a cab, and I never saw her again.
I handed my best friend the keys that led to her death, and you know what? I'm still here.
For months, I wanted to die. I wanted to know why it was her and not me. Why was I, the person who allowed her to drive in her condition, still alive? What purpose could there be? God must have made a mistake! I even questioned whether or not there was a God. Who would do something as cruel as taking my best friend from me? It hurt me a lot emotionally, and the only way I could deal with that was through cutting and other self-harm behaviors. It was the only way for me to control my pain. My next step was wanting to kill myself. I wanted to die because I thought I deserved it. I thought everyone would be happy if I, the person who killed someone we loved, was out of this world. Nothing was going my way.
That's when I finally reached out to someone. I was nervous to do it, I was afraid she would tell me I deserved to die after what I did. I was scared out of my mind and extremely miserable. I was lucky, she told me that it wasn't my fault. That, while we made the wrong decision, there wasn't anything I could do to take it back, and I'd have to live with the bad in my life.

Here I am, 4 years later and a college student. I've done more than I ever hoped I could. I made it to the real world and I'm loving my life. I still think about that day that I was hurt so badly. I still think about the death of my best friend and the death of another person I loved just a few years after that. I still think about last year when my boyfriend almost died in a car accident and I wanted to die with him, a Romeo and Juliet type of thing - to be together forever. I still question God, I still question myself, I still question everything. I'm still hurting, but the pain is bearable; I can live with my mistakes and the mistakes of others.

Why am I telling you this? You need to learn that, with time, our lives improve. Pain we face now can stick with us forever, but with time, all pain becomes manageable.
Your best bet is to speak to some sort of psychiatrist. You could be suffering from a disorder that causes you emotional pain; there are a lot of those out there. Maybe, with the right medication or help, you can get better, feel better.
Think about your little brother. You say you'll miss him. Think of how much he will miss you! There are so many people on this earth that we don't realize how much they care about us. Your brother may blame himself for your suicide, as may others. People will think "is it something I did?" "What could I have done to stop this?" "I should have seen the signs!" etc. Do you really want the friends and family you have to go through that? I'm sure you don't.
Suicide is never the answer. There are so many means of getting help!!
God gives us obstacles to see if we are strong enough to find a way through them. He's testing our faith in Him. He wouldn't put us through such hard and difficult times if He didn't know that we could get through them.

Keep your head up and seek psychiatric help. I guarantee that it will be the best decision you can make in a time when you're feeling so down.

If there is ever a specific time where you are about to commit the act of suicide, wait 15 minutes. Call a friend, your brother, someone just to talk and let your frustrations out verbally.

This is pure curiosity really, but how many Advicenators out there have recommended their friends to come to this website for advice? How did you go about doing that?

I think it would be neat to have my friends on Advicenators too so we could talk about some of the questions we saw and what we think about them. I mean, I don't plan on telling them which questions are mine, but it would be super neat to be sitting at the lunchroom and be able to say, "Yeah, did you see that one Advicenator question about... hahaha!" I am cool with them looking at my advice column so I'd tell them my name, of course, but I would probably keep my questions to myself.

What is the best approach on having a friend come to this website though? Should I just go up to my best friend and say, "Hey, I found this cool website, will you join it with me?" or what? I don't want to sound stupid but I really do want my friends to sign up!

Any advice on how to get my friends to become Advicenators too? Please and thank you!

I just told my college roommate about the site. I told her how discovered it, how I became a level 1 moderator, how I became a level 2 moderator, and how it was created, etc.
It's not difficult at all. I was answering a question and asking her opinion on it, then I explained the site.

Do you have AOL Instant Messenger? (Or any other messenger that allows you a buddy profile?)
You can put the link to your column there. I did that a few years back and a lot of my friends were interested and checked it out.

Do you have a facebook? You can write a note about the site, how you feel about it, why you think your friends should join.

My freshman year of high school, I showed the site to my best friend, my sister, and her two best friends. Each of them made a column here, too. None of them still use their columns (to my knowledge) and didn't last anywhere near as long as myself (since I've been here over 4 years), but it's worth just telling them.

I was on the website with each of them in the room and showed them how it worked... that's how they discovered it with me.
I found the site through a friend's buddy profile. She doesn't use the site anymore, either, but that's how I found it...

how would I solve the equation 2x^2+3x-5(4) The xs are all "x" not multiplication signs. Thanks

Factoring.

You know that the first 2 numbers in each equation have to be x and 2x, and the last two have to be 4 and 5.
Now, you just need to discover where to add and subtract (you have to add for one and subtract for the other because the last term in the original equation is a negative). You also have to determine if the 4 goes with the x or 2x (and then put the 5 with the other)

So it could be:
(x+4)(2x-5)
(2x+4)(x-5)
(x-4)(2x+5)
(x+4)(2x-5)

From there, you just have to FOIL to see which one matches the original equation.

That's how to do it with shortcuts, anyway.

It depends on what you did...

If you lied to him about something, send him a letter or e-mail that has 100 truths about you that nobody knows (some little and a few big ones)... something cute & romantic that tells him that you're sorry for lying and that you trust him enough to share your secrets (also works if you kept a secret from him or blabbed one of his).

This may sound really stupid, but is or was Willy Wonka a real person?

I know some candy (like Nerds, the Wonka Bar, Bottlecaps, Laffy Taffy, Runts, Pixie Sticks, Gobstoppers) have the words Willy Wonka on the packaging. I thought maybe it was a cute company name but since there has been two movies (one in 1971 that starred Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum and one in 2005 that starred Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, David Kelly) about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory I started to think maybe Willy Wonka was a real person. I mean, there COULD be someone actually named Willy Wonka who is alive today for all I know.

I know it all could be a made up story but I am seriously asking if the man is real (and, if real, if he really makes candy). I'm sure there isn't a chocolate factory like there was in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but I DO know that candy factories exist and could very well be owned by a man named Willy Wonka.

This is actually a pretty good question.

Willy Wonka is just a fictional character. Roald Dahl (an amazing author if you get the chance to reah his material) wrote the book _Charlie and the Chocolate Factory_ which is what the movies are based off of.

The reason you see Willy Wonka candy is because he has become the mascot for Nestle.

Wow, I went to their site, and it is confusing!!

It looks to me like "eating free" is only at certain locations, and the bonus bucks are what you have to use at other locations.

At the college I go to, our meal plan is for any location on campus, but it's a-la-carte. That means that each item we buy has a separate dollar amount. For example, if I want fries, I pay $1, if I want grilled cheese, I pay $2, and if I want a water bottle, I pay $1.25. So, for that meal, I'd be paying $4.75 when I get to the register.

My meal plan gives me roughly $1100 per semester and I can use those $1100 at any location on campus that sells food (food court, vending machines, coffee shops, chik-fil-a & mccallisters that are on campus, on campus stores, etc).

Your meal card looks like it only works at certain on campus dining locations and you have to use your "Bonus Bucks" for the other on campus locations.

I know at UNC Chapel Hill, they are given a number of card swipes & with one swipe, they get all-you-can-eat. A few of my friends go there & they say they like it.
I don't know anyone who goes to University of Southern Mississippi, so I can't tell you much more than what I've already said.
I'm not sure if I'm correct, but that's what it looks like to me (meal card at certain places for buffet style & bonus bucks for non-buffet type places).

Don't be afraid to call the school for clarification. I called up to my college tons over the summer & before applying to get a better idea of what goes on. Also, campus tours are very helpful because you can ask your student tour guide about things like that.

If I could vote (I turn 18 only 3 sad days after the election!), I don't know who to choose.

Either way, I think we're kind of screwed. While I support a lot of what Obama says (we do need change), I'm not always so sure on his policies. He's a smooth speaker and knows how to avoid questions, and that frightens me a little.

I'm also moderate in my believes. For example, if it makes any sense, I'm pro-choice but anti abortion. That means I would never have an abortion because I do consider a "fetus" to be a living baby, but I wouldn't strip a woman of her rights. I don't agree with abortion being a form of birth control by any means, but it would be too long and to sad/difficult of a process to determine rape or incest & be allowed the abortion under McCain & Palin's ideals, so I'd rather women have the option.

That's just one of my more moderate beliefs.

While I do agree that McCain is not a very conservative republican, he chose Palin and that irks me. While I would love to see a woman VP or president (just not Hilary - ICK!), Palin is far too conservative for my tastes. She wants abstinence-only education in schools and I believe we should teach abstinence-plus (teach abstinence and sex-education, birth control, etc). How are kids going to protect themselves if they don't know anything but abstinence (being a member of this site for over 4 years, I know darn well that kids are going to have sex no matter what they've been taught, and that a lot of people don't know as much about sex ed. as I would have thought).
That would be another one of my more moderate to liberal beliefs.

The thought of Obama scares me. Not because of his race or religion (I'm not religious, and this anti-christ stuff just irritates me to no end), not even because of his "inexperience". I like Obama's charisma and I love hearing him speak. I just feel that he could be very convincing to a lot of people & that the power could possibly go to his head and be very negative. Biden also angers me. I saw a VP debate where Biden, rather than saying what he and Obama would do, kept "pointing fingers" as Palin says (she does crack me up - not in a bad way), and just badmouthing McCain. He was acting like a 4 year old playing the blame game or something.

With the old facebook, I know they had to approve it.

I know that they're notified when you tag yourself, but I'm not 100% if they still have to approve it (But they do have the ability to untag you, just like you would have the ability to untag yourself).

I'm 12, &I can't tell if I've started my period yet. I'm too embarrassed to tell my mom cos I don't know how to put it in words.

If you're just having the white, gooey stuff, that's just discharge and you haven't actually started your period, but it could be coming soon.

If you're actually having blood come out of your vagina, then you've started. It should last a few days. You may need to tell your mom because I'm not sure how else you're going to be able to get yourself pads or tampons. You'll need to wear something so it doesn't leak through - no way of getting around that.

There is such a thing as a "pre period". It's when you get spotting for a day or so. Spotting is basically just a little bit of blood. You can get it between periods, and most girls can get spotting months before their period or right before they start.

Unfortunately, though, you must be 13 years or older to use this website, so I'm going to have to ban you.

A few nights ago my family had the first actualy sit down talk all together that we have ever had. In this talk everyone including my two brother cried along with my Mother and myself. My Father walked into this talk like he has nothing to change, but slowly discovered that we all had a problem with him and they all seemed to be the same. That my Father doesn't care. He doesn't care about his children, or his wife. My brother Scott is 20, and currently staying at my house for free. Only because my brother Jason is 18 and does not have a job at the moment. Well my Mother believes Scott shouldn't have to pay because Jason is unable to which I completely agree with. Scott said that the only time he talks to his Dad is when my Dads telling him to get the hell out, which really is the only time the talk. And I joked with him about it too about your 20 get out, get your own life. Move Out. So I apoligised to him... and told him I'm sorry, and that I love him and that I don't want him to leave. My Mother said that she didnt want him to leave, everyone did but my Dad which his opinion was the only one that mattered. So Scott moved out. Jason doesnt feel wanted here either, so he's just got aob and is planning on moving out with Jackson [[his BFF since like ever]]. In this talk my Mother admitted that she has had suicidal thoughts, and was planning on killing herself and that she went to the hostpital last week to get help. So my brothers are leaving, my Dad isn't someone I have fealt close with at all, and my Mother wants to kil herself. and the whole suicide thing hit my the hardest because i honestly didnt remember the last time I told her I loved her.
My Mother has said she will never forgive my Father for tearing this family apart, and I asked her if she was planning on leaving him and she didnt denie it. So I had her promise not to leave me.
Im only fourteen where will I go?
Well ever since then everythings gotten worse. My grades have always been an issue with me, and I struggle to get the grades I do.
There already slipping, because I refuse to do shit about my Father. I would rather fail.. and I dont want the teachers to know everything thats happening and i cant exactly bull through this..
I know you dont know how to solve my family issues but how do i explain to my teachers that I cant exactly do everything because im worried about my mothers life, where my brothers are at the moment and controlling myself from killing my father.=X yeh not exactly easy.

Ouch, I can't say I know what you're going through, but I can say I've had to talk to a teacher because of personal issues effecting my grades.

I understand that you don't want your teachers to know everything, but you'll have to give them a little insight so they can better understand. Don't expect them to give you extra long deadlines or anything, but maybe they'll be willing to tutor you and give you an extra day or two for a test or big assignment.

Whether you sit them down one by one, or you have a meeting with all of your teachers, you need to speak with them. If you want to have the meeting with all of your teachers at once, it may be easy to go speak with your guidance councilor and tell him/her that you have some personal issues going on that you would like to discuss with your councilor and then you and your councilor can get together with all of your teachers and he/she can help you speak with them and see if there is anything you can do to raise your grades and to get extra help or extra time.

If you don't want them to know everything, you can tell them that there have been some issues going on and your brothers have to move out, your mother is sick and you're very worried about her health, etc.

Just know that, if you do this through guidance, they may want to speak to your parents or something along those lines.

If you want to speak to your teachers one on one, just give them a little insight. You don't have to get into the specifics. Just ask to speak to them after class or after school (because you never know, you may start crying and I'm sure you don't want to do that in front of everyone). Tell them that you have a lot of family issues going on right now and that you're having trouble concentrating in your classes. Ask if you can get some tutoring or maybe extra time on something. Also, ask if you can have any extra credit opportunities because you realize that your family issues are strongly effecting your grades and you don't want that to happen. If the teacher asks you what's going on, you can either say you don't want to talk about it or you can give the teacher a little info like your brothers are leaving and your worried about your moms health.

Most teachers would definitely respect that.

My freshman year of high school I had been dealing with a lot of personal issues which mostly revolved around the death of my best friend. I ended up going to a teacher about how I was feeling and she was a lot of help. It was better than talking to my guidance department because they would have informed my parents and that was the last thing I wanted. All of this happened my freshman year, but junior year I had a class that my grades were suddenly slipping in because I was going through some other stuff that kind of hit me. I never told that teacher about it (either of them), but the one who I had my freshman year must have sensed something because she told my teacher I was going through something, and the teacher raised my grade from failing to a C+. So it really does help to just talk to your teachers and let them in on at least some of what is going on in your life!!

Some things you must know before even being considered.

Read the FAQ - it's a must
Read the Terms of Service - another must.

Make sure to participate in the moderator discussions, but do not "take them over". Don't post just to post, make sure you have something to say. Also, the moderator discussion is for site questions, problems, etc. Yes, we can have 1-2 "fun" threads, but in the past they have gotten out of control, so they're more limited now.

Also, RATE QUESTIONS!! Try rating at least 5 questions per day. I would actually suggest rating a minimum of one full page of questions per day, but do what you have time for.
To be a level 2 moderator, you have to have time and dedication. I've actually been slacking on my duties, but I'm catching up. DN, the site owner, knows I've just started college and am doing a balancing act.

Answer questions and rate fairly!

When rating questions: 1s are for questions you see all of the time, they're plain dumb, or they have horrible chat speak.
2s are for decent questions that have nearly perfect spelling/grammar. There are some mistakes, but they've attempted. Also, the question is decent.
3s are for great questions. They're unique, and the questioneer uses the best spelling/grammar they possibly can. The question is clear, you understand what they're asking, and it's a good question for first time site-users to come across.

This site is not just for teenagers, plenty of adults use it (although some are turned away when they see the immaturity level of some users).

Rating Answers:
1s are for abusive answers ONLY. If you rate someone a one, you're saying they deserve to be warned or banned. You must always follow a 1 with an abuse report (& make sure to always include a link to the abuse & a reason why you feel it's abuse). An over abundance of foul language, advising illegal, dangerous, or strongly immoral behavior advice can be considered abusive
2s are for answers that don't help you, but they aren't harmful or abusive.
3s are for good answers. You may not use the advice, but you definitely considered it.
4s are for good advice that you actually use. You like it, it's helpful, and you appreciate the adviser helping you.
5s are for above & beyond answers. The advice was great, you used it, and it REALLY helped your situation. The adviser went above and beyond to help you; they could have looked something up or gave you more than you asked for.

To be an L2, you can't use text speak. ('u' instead of you, for example.)

There are very few L2s, and as far as I know, Dangernerd has already picked out who he plans on bumping up.
Stick around on the site, show that you're dedicated, and maybe in a year or so, if the site needs help, you can be bumped up.
No guarantees, but you never know.

Dedication to the site & following rules is very important. If you've already been banned, chances aren't as great as someone with a clean record. Stay out of trouble, follow site rules, and answer & rate as many questions as possible. You want to make yourself known & for good reasons.

Unfortunately, as I've already said, you'll have to stick around for a good amount of time. Creating more L2s is extremely rare, but it can happen. We need those who are dedicated to the site, so if we see you've been here and active for a year or more, you'll probably be considered much more than someone who has not.

hi,i have an account on facebook and tried to set up another account for my friend on the same email address with the same password whith were both my email and password,but than i couln't get on to my own account just her account.so first i tried to change her password but i still couldn't get on to my account,sooo than i deactivated her account soo i could go on to mine own account.AND it didn't work !i need to get on to my account by tuesday!!!!!PLEASE help me!!!!

It appears that by creating her a facebook using the same log-in information as you (very, very bad idea!), you erased your facebook.

There really isn't a way to get it back, at least none that would make any sense.

If you wanted to make your friend a Facebook account, why would you choose to use the same log-in information; that just doesn't make any sense. Unless, of course, I'm interpreting your question incorrectly.

Whether or not I've correctly understood what you're saying, your best options is to contact Facebook about it.

How do i get my own discussion board or like forum like some advicenator people have? Its for socializing and whatnot. Please let me know

Me and my boyfriend are both really indecisive, and we can never think of anything to do when we hang out. Neither one of us has a job (not for lack of trying), so anything that costs more than like $5 (i.e. movies) isn't an option. We hang out at each other's houses, go for walks, and go to the park a lot, but I'd like to do something different. Any ideas? (weekends and weekday nights, if it makes a difference)

So I'm a senior in high school this year and I want to apply early for colleges. I'm trying to figure out what to write for my essay and I'm stumped. For a particular college I'm asked to "Write an essay or personal statement of atleast 250 words". Help! What should I write about? I don't want to be the same old student who writes a boring paper, shouldn't it be original? Thank you!

Give them insight into your personality. Don't go on and on about your accomplishments unless they truly mean something important to you. Colleges hear that all of the time. Don't just say "my name is sam and I'm 17. I'm from Indiana and I like to collect rocks." Stuff like that is boring.

Did you learn something BIG while in high school? Did you have a life-changing experience?
I did, and that's what I wrote about. I had a life-changing experience that caused me to completely change what I wanted to major in, and it completely changed my perspective on life. Because of what had happened to me, I had something out of the ordinary to write for my "about me".

Anyway, you definitely wants something original. The "judges" won't give you a second thought if it's an essay they've read hundreds of times. Even if you're not the best reader, make it interesting.
Tell them what makes you YOU & why. Always have at least one person proof read it to check for spelling, grammar, and clarity mistakes.
