friends with benefits is pretty much when you can make out or go even further with a guy and when you see each other at school the next day you don't act any differently than before. it's basically all of the "good" stuff about dating without the committment of actually dating.

It means that your not dating the person but you still kiss, make out, hold hands, have sex, and whatever else you want to do, all while being friends.

When you're just friends with someone, but you're willing to do more than friends would do.
You can have intercourse, oral sex, making out, etc.
You're not dating, but you're having the "perks" of dating.

Basically, it's friends that have sex and don't have an official romantic relationship.
