about

Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

advice

how do you get the hearts on your advice column?

& hearts ;
But delete the spaces.
so it looks like ♥
But... last time I checked it wasn't working in answers (though that isn't your question) I just said it because I did it once with and once without spaces.... whatever, this is confusing enough for you! haha.

I'm not too confident with walking up to people and starting conversation...
What would be some good opening points/questions for talking to people? Of around my own age (16/17) (college people) or older? (work collegues)

Any suggestions?

Perfect questions for me, I can be shy until I get to know someone (extremely hard for most of my friends to believe) but it's kind of uncomfortable. But anyway, me and a good friend of mine Paige went to see Rebound today (awesome movie especially if you're a basketball fan) Anyway... we were sitting outside on the benches waiting for our ride, and two girls and a guy walked outside and sat down on one of the other benches that was right next to ours. As they were walking out one of the girls looked at us and just said HEY! In a super happy/hyper way. It was kind of funny so we said hi back. Then she was talking with the guy she was with.. and the girl, but a minute later she came, sat down next to us, and was like "sorry but he's being annoying" (pointing to the guy) and so she asked us our names and what school we went to and stuff like that. She was actually really cool and really sweet. My point is though, since you could probably care less about my story (haha) is that just walk up to someone and say hi. Either they blow you off like "what the heck was that", or they start talking to you, and you learn more. If you just see someone walking around the mall alone, or sitting alone in the movies, go up to them, see if they're alone, if so ask if they would like some company, and then ask their name, their school (you could even be going to the same one and then you'd have a lunch buddy or something, you know someone to eat with) Does that make sense. I know how awkward or uncomfortable it would be to do that, because I have this really outgoing friend Zakia, and whenever I'm with her I do things I never would've thought I'd do, like walk up to random people and start up conversations, just stuff like that. Thats all you have to do, I mean walk up to people at the mall first ( be careful, you don't want to end up talking to a stalker or kidnapper or something, make sure you have a friend with you for safety) and then just say HI!, and if they're by themselves, ask if they're meeting someone. If they say yes ask if they want company until their friend or whoever arrives, the worst they'll say is no thanks, and then you'll probably never see them again anyway. Or if they're not meeting anyone, then ask the same thing, if they would like to walk with you then. You could make GOOD friendships like that. I first met one of my friends in a mall, I haven't talked to her in a while because we go to seperate schools, but when we were in the same middle school we were friends.
Anyway, just walk up, if they're alone ask if they're meeting someone and either way ask if they would like company.
Sorry if this is confusing and that I'm just repeating myself, but I want to make sure you know I am giving you advice, not just telling a story I wanted to tell someone. Anywho, just randomly start up a convo begining with people you don't know but do look safe, go with a friend for extra safety, that way if they look at you like you're a fool or something you'll never see them again anyway.
How did you meet friends in school and classes? Just do the same thing with people that look lonely or sad or anything in the mall or at the movies, or where ever you hang out.
Hope I've helped,

i am a good player at basketball, baseball and football, but i can never work up the nerve to try out for my school to try to make the team. i would really like to play all three next year. please give me some advice to work up confidence to try out.

Well if you know the coach talk to him or her about it. Just say you were thinking about going out for the team but you weren't sure if you'd be good enough. Coaches and teachers and stuff are a lot easier to talk to than ya think. But just practice a lot this summer, that way you'll improve even more and you'll have more skill and better chances. But the worst that can happen is getting cut. It happens to a lot of people. I don't remember who told me or who they were talking about. But some b-ball player thats is or was famous, well back in his day, he was cut during tryouts. He only made it his senior year, and that's when he was finally noticed by a scout who let him play college ball and then he went on to the pros. I really wish I could remember who it was, but still that might boost your confidence a little.
But you can talk to the coach, or anyone else, you have to practice and improve in at least one or two of the three, and then go to tryouts with your head held up, don't get cocky, make sure you're a team player, and try out for all three. That way if you don't make one at least you'll have a chance at another. And also, about being a team player, I know people who have gotten cut because though they were really good, they were ball hogs, and stuff like that. So play your best, but give others a chance to play theirs. And just show up and give it a shot, you have nothing to lose. Good luck!!

Ok, i had a boyfriend and we were totally in love, but we barely saw eachother (once or twice a month) because we both went to different schools and were in all honors and ap classes (aka TONS of hw). In the end he ended up breaking up with me because "I love you, but i really cant b attached to someone right now." We still ended up being best friends, but about a week ago he told me that he had never told his mom about us breaking up, and i asked him y. He told me that it was because he still loved me (after 2 months), and that he could never take down the picture of us that i gave him for valentines. We're going to the same school next year, and he wants to get back together then....should i go for it because i love him...or just not put the used gum back in my mouth?

It depends. Do you still have feelings for him? Is the ONLY reason you broke up because you didn't see each other enough? If that's all, well then you should DEFINITLY try again. What's stopping you? Or is there something stopping you? I've never heard anyone say "or just not put the used gum back in my mouth?" That's a cool statement. But if there isn't anything stopping you, if you still love him, then you should give it another try. I hope I helped, good luck with you and the guy!!!!!!!

whats the artist and song title of this song :

its something unpredictable, but in the end its right. I hope you had the time of your life

????

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/greenday/goodriddancetimeofyourlife.html
That should answer your question, well actually that's just the lyrics, but it's Good Riddance (Time of your life) by Greenday, one of the awesomest bands ever!!! Well in my opinion, that used to be my favorite song, but then my sister got me listening to country music, but I still like rock and stuff, but you don't care ha ha. Well hope I answered your question.

When i try to create a screen name for the AIM screen name stuff it always says the:Th service you are trying to reach is temporaliy unavaliable-plese try your requst agin.20814.Can you plese help me get a screen name and a password without any thing like that showing up.

Thank you:)

Well it has said that to me before, and after I ex out of it I just try to see if making the screen name worked, so I'll try to sign in with it and the password, and it worked. So try to sign in with it, it might work and it might not. I'm just saying from experience with that problem, or a similar one, I just tried signing in and it worked. I hope thats what you meant. https://my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/registration/initRegistration.psp?siteId=aimregistrationPROD&authLev=1&mcState=initialized&createSn=1&mcAuth=%2FBcAG0HMWIMAAK9OAPOVoUHMWL8IuOV5dg9XkngAAA%3D%3D
That's the link I use to get a new screen name for AIM, it might be different then the exact page you use, or it might be the same. Try it, and if what you're saying comes up, just try signing in with the screen name and password you used. If it doesn't work then it means the screen name was taken, or it could just mean it screwed up. But as I said before, it's done it to me but I was still able to use the screen name I signed up for. Sorry if this doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to find someone's screen name on aol? I don't know someone's screen name and was wondering if there was anyway of finding it.

Thanks!

Actually yes, Up towards the top next to MY AIM, there's PEOPLE, if you go to that, all the way down is says find a buddy, then you can either do it by name, e-mail address, or common interests. If that isn't what you meant, then let me know and I'll try to help out better.

No, acutally you are right, not everybody has someone in their life that they can ask about lifes many mysteries, but please, i have been here for nearly a year now, just starting back up as an advicenator again for the first time in 2 months thinking i would help people with serious problems, and see three questions in a row about honest to god common scence stuff, such as, what should i do, my sister is being a little too bossy, or my personal FAVORITE of What are the lyrics to..., i think that it is just common scence, and that is a part of whats wrong w. the younger generations, and of couse me being a part of it, speaking for the most of us, WE ARE LAZY, and maybe if we just tell one person that there is a way to get lyrics to a song by not asking someone, then thats one less person that we have to drag along. Thank you for being tactfull in the way you worded your statement to me though, i have had people like curse my mother for giving birth to me by asking my question. And by the way, i like helping the little girl whos 12 and hasnt had her first kiss yet either, i personally think those are the ones that count, because at age 12, who wasnt insecure about themselves?

Yes, I do agree with those examples you gave me. It really irratates me when people ask for lyrics, I've been on this site for over a year, I've used this name for barely over a year, but I did have another name but I hated it after a while, so really I've been here almost a year and a half or something like that and I have seen all of these questions.
I do agree with what you're saying here, but I just get annoyed when people post stuff like that to the pool, I did it once, I learned by the other columnists who were here longer than me that it was okay, and that yeah they all agreed with me, but it's not like it's going to change anything. And thank you for being polite when answering this.
I am a level two moderator, and if I see questions that really need to be deleted, I will delete them. Now if you saw some of the questions in hell mode, that we've already deleted, you would see some of the crap people ask. But anyway, as I said, thanks for being polite, and I do agree with a lot of the stuff you said. And though that's not much of a finishing sentence, I'm about to leave to go swimming so maybe I'll talk to you again sometime.

I'm really worried about my girl friend her grandpa is in the hospital. Well she's sad and streesed out. I'm sad for her, but I don't know what to do for her. So my question is... What should I do for her? Or should I do anything at all?

I guess the only thing you can do is be there for her. Like make sure she knows she can talk to you. Tell her you'll be her crying shoulder, you'll listen to everything she has to say, and you'll do your best to comfort her. Tell her you might not have all the answers, but you're someone she can vent to. Just make sure she knows you're there to listen. And then of course you have to be there to listen. Lend her your shoulder to cry on, do whatever you can. Ask her if there's anything you can do, and if it's a reasonable request, then try your best to do it. I'm sorry about her grandpa, hope everything goes okay.

i have a big nose how to i make it smaller with out makeup or surgery I RATE HIGH

What you are asking is pretty much impossible. There is no way to make your nose smaller without surgery, and there's no way to make it appear smaller without makeup.

Ok, this is starting to bug me, I know that in america we have free speech, but omg this draws the line, STOP WHINING! I know that some of you advicenators dont deserve this, because your problems ARE real, but i have just read a "problem" about a sister who is being "too bossy," im sorry, but this screams 9 YEARS OLD all over it. Please, do not post such petty problems, you just sound blatanly stupid.
Once again, my apolagies to the people on here who actually do have a problem, and I would LOVE to help you, but to all you WHINERS out there, please just leave the problem be.

Ummm I'm sorry but if you don't like the questions ask, nobody is forcing you to stay. Besides if you want better questions asked to the pool then why don't you ask them. They don't have to be true, but thats how people learn whats good and whats not. Thats also how lots of columnists get started. I sort of made up a question once, I asked about something true but lied about what I wanted to do about it when asking if it was a good idea or not. I mean it's not that big of a deal. Us mods decide what we think need to be deleted or is okay to stay. Unless the question is spam or obscene, or personal question to the pool then it can stay. If you don't like it, don't answer it, and if you're a level 1 mod, then rate it down. And some people like the girls who have never had a kiss, might not have mothers or sisters to tell them this stuff, and you if you're a girl try talking to your dad about kissing guys. It's not the easiest thing to do. This site is not just for teenagers and stuff, but this is a place where teenagers can get questions answered without being judged and without being embarassed. I mean some people really don't know what giving head is, I was embarassed when I asked my sister what it was back when I was 12 or however old I was. But this site is good for people who don't know stuff like that. Sorry you feel this way, and I'm sure others do too. Sometimes I would just like to knock some sense into those people, but you have to try and think about it from every angle. Not everone has someone in their life they can talk to, and sometimes they are truly serious when they ask those "whiny" questions. But hey, I'll just end it now since I know this isn't what you want to hear.

i used to play for my school/parish soccer team which is U-14 as far as i know and this year im going to be a freshman but i dont wanna go out for high school soccer...id rather play rec league. do you think i should ask if i can still play since it is a school AND parish team or should i just let it go? thanks in advanced!

I love soccer, I'm pretty good too, but anyway, I think doing it for the school would probably be better. Unless you don't like the coach or something, that's why I wouldn't want to go out for the school team, I'm not too crazy about the coach.
But if you go out for the school team then you'll get to know more people at school, you'll have some people to eat lunch with on the first day if you don't know others, and many other reasons. Entering high school is always fun, but there will be more homework, and more tests and stuff like that, so I think both would be too much, but if you think you can handle it I would do both!!
But the final decision if up to you, do which ever you would rather do. Whichever you think would be more fun for you.

How do i delete my computers history?!

Tools, internet options, delete history
Or just delete the cookies, same thing except instead of delete history, you delete cookies

Or press ctrl and H at the same time, and then right click everything in each tab and press delete, it takes longer, but sometimes just deleting history doesn't work on every site.

Hey guys, i like to read a lot, and i've read many famous books like To kill a mocking bird, Catcher in the Rye, Harry potter, and so on. Anyways does anyone know any really really good books, and authors for when i go to the library next time? And i dont want books that you have heard sound good, but actual books you guys have read and really enjoyed, like an "i never want to put it down" kinda book if that makes sense. Thanks luv ya!

Well if you're into nonfiction, but really interesting, I just finished reading the "A Child Called It" trilogy, and it was REALLY good, I didn't want to put the first one down, the second one... I had to force myself to stop reading because it was really late and I needed some sleep, and the third one was pretty good, but if you're emotional it may not be for you, as embarassing as it is for me to say, I was fighting back tears in parts of each of them, I also wanted to throw up during the first one (he is forced to eat puke... it just kinda got me a little queasy) but all I will say is it's about a child back in the 70s who was horrible abused, got out of his parents home, went through discrimination as a foster child (or f-child as they were called back then, because for some reason it was bad to be in foster care) and it's about how he grew up into a fine adult. Really good book, but it all depends if you like that type of thing. Other than Catcher and the Rye (never read it) the other books you listed I also enjoyed, but I definitley reccomend the Child Called It trilogy.
