advice
ive been doing a lot of ab excersises lately
so i think the muscle is getting bigger but that layer of fat is not so my stomach is getting bigger...anyone know how to just make my stomach as flat as possible?
Its all (or largely) in the diet. To flatten your stomach you have to lose weight. Since fat loss cannot be targetted, it follows that overall weight loss is the only way.
So, eat right, eat less than you burn etc. As far as the right type of exercise, the more complete the better. Best would be a weight training and cardio combination. However, without the proper diet there will be little or no results.
I have been trying to eat healthier, so I have been substituting some of my normal snacks for fruits. But when I start eating them, I eat SOOO much fruit! Can eating too much fruit be bad for you in the long run? Like obviously you need fruit in your diet, but if you eat too much all the time can it cause you to gain weight or anything? Thanks in advance!
I agree with the post below. I just wanted to add that it can of course make you gain weight. While not an unhealthy food, it does contain calories and this means that if you eat a lot in excess of what you burn, you will gain weight.
Even those foods that people regard as not being fattening will make you gain weight if you over eat. Theoretically you can get fat off celery if you eat enough of it.
I am 13/f and most people say that I am pretty, but I don't think that it's true. I will only rate if you are truly honest.

The question is, how will you know if we are being truly honest?
Anyway my sincere opinion is that you look ok... somewhere between average and pretty. On a scale of one to ten I would say maybe a 6-7. There... as honest as it gets.
what do i do my dogs are attatched to human table food they won't touch dog food so i have to make them breakfast lunch and dinner. tell me how i can get them to eat dog food. please........ thank you
Ok the suggestions that the others made are great. I just wanted to add that dogs will eventually eat the stuff. If you have the heart for it then just leave out only dog food. Believe me your dogs will not starve to death. They only refuse it as long as they think there is a chance to get something else. So far I am guessing so far the humans caved in... dogs are great opportunists arent they?
Otherwise, mixing dog food into regular food and gradually shifting the mix in favour of the dog food should work. Or if you make anything with meat try soaking the stuff in some of the sauce or something like that.
However, much easier is option one (tough love). You just have to be strong :)
Btw, what kind of dog eats three meals a day? Im just curious...
My big sister lives in New York by herself (my family is from Texas) and she used to be a dancer and now she does high fashion runway modeling. She was just down here visiting and she was talking to me about her eating habits and how she stays thin because I've always wondered how she's a size zero in pants (she's 5'7 or 8). She said that all she eats during the day is a good breakfast and a sandwich or a salad during the day and thats it. I was wondering if this is healthy or not. I mean she isn't anorexic because she eats just not as much.
That really does not sound healthy. Everything I have read indicates that the healthiest way to live is to eat many small meals throughout the day.
In my opinion she is depriving her body of the nutrients that it requires. What she is doing is not exactly starvation (though somewhat close to it), so its difficult to say what long term effects it might have- since I am not a medical practitioner or anything like that. All I can say is that its generally not healthy and it might be possible that she is exposing herself to some of the same health risks as anorexics.
One thing I can say on this topic is that when you eat too little and/or too rarely your body switches to famine mode. It thinks food is scarce and that it must conserve resources (to keep you alive). This slows down your metabolism (which from a weight loss perspective is counter productive). This means that it is far more likely to burn muscle rather than fat, it is more likely to store excess calories as fat, and it leaves you with much less energy than you would otherwise have.
Almost worst of all is that this is totally uneccessary. One can easily eat more often during the day without risking gaining weight, and while being much kinder to your body's long term health. Look at bodybuilders for example. They are amongst the most nutrition conscious bunch out there, and they have a bodyfat percentage lower than pretty much any athlete. Yet they eat some serious amounts, and they eat usually every three hours. Of course they expose themselves to hard routines etc, but the point is that their metabolism is working like a blast furnace.
Anyway, hope this was of some help to you. I might suggest running this past mikecft (who is our local fitness expert here on advicenators) and I am sure he can add/ correct my little rant here :)
Good luck
when people answer other people's questions with: go ask the doctor, isn't that kind of redundant? who goes all the way to the doctor's office to ask one little question anyway? what do they mean? just ask the doctor over the phone? what if your doctor is actually a pediatrician and might think you're a hypochondriac? i have tons of questions to ask my "doctor." i can't go ask every single time. write down the questions and ask the doctor the next time you visit for something semi-more important?
I have used that line a few times. Thing is that people come on here and ask for serious medical advice sometimes. They describe symptoms that people here could not possibly diagnose online(probably not even doctors if there are any on advicenators).
Its one thing if one gives a guess for most situations. Problem with random guesses when it comes to health issues is that the person could suffer from it much more seriously if they take the advice.
I spend a lot of my time on this site looking at fitness/nutrition questions. I know a bit on the subject and have some experience. I am by no means an expert mind you but, I see some of the most disastrously bad advice almost on a daily basis. Some of it is potentially harmful (I recall one person trying to convince another in all seriousness, that if he wanted to lose weight he had to eat nothing but tuna for 6 months).
My point is that if medical advice is equally crap telling someone to see a doctor might be the only reasonable advice.
If you are worried about your doctor thinking you are a hypochondriac or whatever, what about finding some columnists who know something about medicine and asking them personally? or find someone in your daily life (a nurse/ doctor/ medical student) who you can ask from time to time. It might not be foolproof, but I reckon the odds of getting decent advice would improve.
Though the rest of my body is in fairly good shape, my upper arms have more flab than is preferred, especially as they get nearer to the shoulders. I have a busy schedule and my breaks come in irregular and short intervals. What are some simple exercises I could do at my desk/when I'm waiting without any work out equipment?
This is all very nice, as long as you are aware that area specific exercises will do nothing to get rid of the flab on your arms. The human body works in such a way that fat loss cannot be targetted.
So, since it follows from this that the only way to lose the flab on your arms is to lose weight overall, that means that it is beneficial for you to do all sorts of exercises (not just those that target arms/shoulders). So, might I suggests crunches, lunges and squats (together with the suggestions given below). If you want more exercises that target the shoulders, and if you have something like paperweights, then maybe in combination with shoulder presses try dumbbell lateral raises (of course in your case it would be paperweight lateral raises). The advantage of this exercise is that you dont need anything too heavy to feel the burn (for things like presses i doubt you will get much from paperweights):
http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/DBLateralRaise.html
Of course none of this will help much without a proper diet. Good luck.
i really want to lose weight on my arms and my stomach and my legs any ideas please help.!!
None of the advice involving specific exercises will do much to help. Fat loss cannot be targetted or "spot reduced". Dont believe me, then just look it up.
Unfortunately the only way to lose weight is overall. That means eating less than you burn, proper diet and exercise. Any exercise you do will help by burning a certain amount of calories. However, doing sets of push ups or whatever will in no way whatsoever reduce the fat on your arms.
The correct answer to the question (as you worded it) is: thats impossible. There is no way to target those areas without targeting other areas too. The order of the fat loss is not in our hands.
If you want to lose weight, try follow some of these tips:
- Eat often (4-6 small balanced meals a day)
- Exercise (preferably weights and cardio, although any exercise is good)
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat balanced (your calories should be split in a 40-40-20 ratio ideally, carbs-protein-fats)
- Avoid saturated fats
- Generally stay away from food that you know is bad for you (e.g. things with sugar added, deep fried stuff etc).
Sorry this is not the answer you wanted, but there is no need to spend the next year doing some isolation exercise or whatever, and wonder why the hell it isnt working.
Good luck.
What is a good FREE antivirus program to download?
Other possibilities are avast and avg.
avast:

avg:

I have used both and personally prefer avast.
i've been told that if you don't eat enough your body will go into starvation mode, and it will actually cause you to gain weight.
is this true? because i was thinking and then how do people with anorexia (not that i'm going to become anorexic or anything) lose weight. because if they hardly eat anything, won't their bodies go into starvation mode and cause them to gain weight?
THANKS!
What starvation mode does is slow your metabolism. That means that is not entirely correct to say that you will gain weight. It is more correct to say that losing weight is more difficult and gaining it easier.
If the calories you intake are low enough you will lose weight starvation mode or not (i.e. people can starve). So anorexics intake so little that they lose weight anyway. However, one thing about starvation mode that is especially nasty is that your body burns what is easiet first. Muscle burns easier than fat, so that is what you lose primarily. Thats also why anorexics look like they are sick and weak.
I have always wondered if you burn calories when you talk, sing or laugh. I know this is a weird question!
You burn calories by simply being alive (breathing etc). On top of this every single activity also burns some calories. This includes talking, singing, typing, absolutely anything at all.
It wont be a substantial amount mind you, but the answer is definately yes.
uhh how bad is drinking for you actually? I'm 15 I drink almost every day but I'm pretty much an honor student so I don't get it what's so bad with it?
At your age its bad no matter what because you are still growning.
Otherwise (for adults) drinking alcohol is ok in small quantities. However, people underestimate the power of this drug. Unlike weed and more severe narcotics, alcohol is accepted by society and not frowned upon in the same way. It is however more addicting than many of the drugs that people wouldnt be caught dead touching.
It also does incredible damage to your body if you drink too often. It easily can match, if not outdo balck market narcotics. Its not just your liver it hits mind you, but everything from killing your brain cells (this is permanent, not like the temporary daze you get from weed) to damaging your stomach, kidneys etc. If you think about it, an alcoholic is no different from a junkie in any way other than social acceptance.
Dont get me wrong, I am not preaching to you, I drink myself occasionally. However, you are simply too young. There is no reason for you to expose yourself to these risks so early in life. I would seriously recommend you quit (although, if you are unlucky, you might be surprised how hard that has become now that you are doing it every day).
How exactly do you know if you computer has a virus?
because my computer is reallly sloooow.
plus i think if it has a virus you have to take it to best buy & pay for it!
my norton antivirus thing has expried. show i renew it?
gosh, one last question. does myspace cause viruses? bc thats the only website i visit.
Well, a virus can maifest itself in different ways, so its hard to say whether your computer is infected or not. Slowness can also be caused by spyware and such things as far as i know.
Anyway, you can buy all sorts of protection, but there are also free alternatives. I cannot guarantee that they will be as effective, but I have kept my machine clean without ever spending a dime.
Anyway, try check out these products:
Avast (avast is a free antivirus program)
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
See if this helps. Good luck.
What's the difference between getting your master's degree and your bacheler's (sp) degree?
The master's degree builds up on your bachelor. It is therefore more specific and you come out with more specialised knowledge (you need a bachelor degree in order to take a masters).
The number of years they take can vary a little bit i think, but my bachelor took 3 years and the master's then took another 2 years on top of that.
is downloading music from limewire illegal? also, can people get into your computer from it. is there any othe programs you reccomend for downlaoading music? Thanks :]]
Im not sure how these other theories were formed, but as far as I know it is always illegal to download music like that. The artists have a copyright on their material and you are breaking that copyright. This is really the same no matter what program you use.
I think some people are really confusing two things, what is actually illegal and what the authorities focus on. Those guys are more concerned with people who share the stuff than people who simply download it. So if you dont share, odds are you wont get caught. Even so, it would be completely reckless to say that it is 100% safe. Nothing illegal is 100% safe.
As for the other part of the question, no one will get into your computer from using limewire.
well im trying to find a good quick diet to go on to loose about 10-13 pounds especially in my stomach and a little in my thighs basically i want to loss weight and tone up..i have no access to a gym but i do have a treadmill and so i was wondering is there a quick healthy food diet i can go on..by the way i am 15/female my height is about 5'3" i weigh about 138
and do you guys know any good exersises to get rid of the fat in the stomach...thanx sooo much in advance
I feel like a broken tape recorder the amount of time I have given the exact same piece of advice. Here goes...
Despite what you may hear, despite what popular belief is on this site, despite what impression you get from toneteen (although if you read carefully even they agree with this)... there are no exercises that will get rid of fat from a specific area of the human body. We do not work this way. Crunches or whatever will build muscle on the stomach and that is all. To lose stomach fat you have to lose weight overall and your body will eventually take it from the area in question. We are not in control of this process and cannot direct it to specific parts.
Here are a few weight loss tips:
1- The most obvious... eat less than you burn (by about 500 calories)
2- Eat often... aim to have 4-6 balanced meals every day. Divide your calories more or less evenly amongst them.
3- Keep saturated fats low (good fats containing essential fatty acids are found in things like fish, nuts, olive oil, canola, seeds etc)
4- Drink plenty of water
5- Stay way from things that have sugar added to them
6- Eat carbs moderately (good sources are whole wheat products, oats, rice etc)
7- The most common recommendation I see these days is a calorie split of 40-40-20 (carb, protein, fat). There are 9 cals per gram of fat, proteins and carbs are 4 grams each.
Here is a link to a calorie calculator:
http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/calories.shtml
As for your exercise routine, start out slowly and build it up. Try to get the cardio over 30 minutes for best results.
Doing things like crunches, squats, push ups, back exercises etc is also a good idea. Building some muscle will help to boost your metabolism and will make weight loss easier. The more varied your workout (i.e. the more muscles you hit) the better.
Good luck
Okay. If I eat one meal a day for 2 weeks, Will I lose that stupid "pouch" of fat under my belly button and on my hips? I need to know soon!
Please don't lecture me about that not being healthy.
Ok, some mixed advice there. First off, the straight answer is of course "no" it wont. That much people are in agreement about it seems.
I did want to clear up some of the other advice given. First off 4- 6 meals a day (i.e. eating every 3-4 hours) is the way to go. 3 meals a day is simply not as good.
One of the reasons why eating frequently is better is because it helps to speed up your metabolism. If your metabolism slows, weight loss becomes very difficult. Your body may also start digesting muscle instead of fat.
Now, the other thing that need clarifying is the whole sit- up/ crunch thing. Neither (yes neither) will help reduce your stomach fat. Despite popular (misguided) belief on this site, fat loss cannot be targeted. The human body does not work this way (dont believe me, just look it up). These exercises will build muscle on your stomach thats all. Their value as calorie burners is pretty damn low.
The only way to lose fat is to lose weight overall. So, cardio workouts, weights workouts, sports in general etc are all beneficial. They will help you burn more calories than you consume. It follows from this that full body workouts (hitting all muscle groups etc) is the way to go. The order of fat loss however is not in our hands... unfortunately.
Good luck.
I'm 19 years old and I started dating a 25 year old man. When we had sex for the first time, he suddenly said he had to go to pee. When he came back he didn't feel like having sex anymore.
Is it really possible that a man can feel an urge to urinate while making love? I'm afraid it was just an exuse because something was not ok. Please help me.
This is really strange. I mean, I suppose it is possible that he felt the urge, but that still does not explain why he didnt feel like having sex anymore afterwards.
Try running this past someone with medical expertise... maybe there is something wrong with him.
Anyway, about the only thing I can contribute in this case is to say that I seriously doubt it is your fault. I simply cant think of what would be so terrible that he would have to make an excuse like that.
If I were you, I would wait and see how the next time turns out. If something weird happens again, then simply talk to him. Just say that you find the situation a bit strange and you were wondering what you could do to make things more "normal".
Anyhow, Im sorry I cant be of more help. Best of luck to you.
Well.. I decided I wanted to get in shape & maybe lose some weight. So I've been eating less & healthier, and we have an excersize machine, so I've been doing a little of that. I haven't really done that much, but my stomach hurts reallyy baddd? Anyone know what it is?
Ok, there really isnt a lot to go by in your info, but I have a few guesses (mind you it might have helped to know what kind of exercise machine you have).
Anyway, if it is related to the exercise then it can be muscle soreness- if you are not used to working out and if this machine is ab intensive- then it can be really bad. Alternatively it could be a pulled muscle, which would also be terrible, but one would have thought that you would have felt that while exercising.
The only other thing that I cant think of, which is related to your new lifestyle, is that maybe you ate something that does not agree with you.
Well, thats about all I can think of. If you ask for my best guess (and if I assume that the machine hit your abs) then I go with muscle soreness.
i have an amazing boyfriend that i really love. but my best friends think he is a pot-smoking jerk even though hes only smoked pot once! and just because we got in a fight a while ago they are convinced hes out to hurt me and just wants to make-out..but the thing is i LOVE making out with him..today my best friend said he was ugly and she often compares huge losers to my bf and she makes me cry..no matter what i say she doesnt believe that he is a great guy even though he is..how do i show her that hes not like she thinks and also get her to stop insulting him?? ive tried telling her it hurts my feelings but she keeps doing it.
Of course Geenbeanie is right. How you handle the "chat" is up to you. Personally I would be rather stern about it. Make it absolutely clear without being rude, that this kind of behaviour is not to be tolerated.
Start out by telling her that you think she is a great friend (or something in those lines), so she is aware that you arent disrespecting your relationship. Then inform her that she is jeopardising this friendship. What she needs to understand most of all, is that this actually isnt a question of whether she likes your bf or not. This is a question of her showing respect to you and to the choices you have made. A real friend will not put you in a situation where you have to choose (at least not based solely on personal whims and dislikes).
Best of luck.
