question about answers

Question Posted Tuesday August 1 2006, 6:53 pm

when people answer other people's questions with: go ask the doctor, isn't that kind of redundant? who goes all the way to the doctor's office to ask one little question anyway? what do they mean? just ask the doctor over the phone? what if your doctor is actually a pediatrician and might think you're a hypochondriac? i have tons of questions to ask my "doctor." i can't go ask every single time. write down the questions and ask the doctor the next time you visit for something semi-more important?

To be honest, no it isn't redundant, although I can understand why you might think it is.

The truth is that, as has already been said, the majority of the users of this site are young and would not be able to provide the sort of advice that you would be able to get at your doctor.

You also have to bear in mind that it is highly unlikely that there are any qualified medical practitioners on the website and therefore it will be impossible to provide a professional, accurate diagnosis.

The rule of thumb where concerns over health are concerned is that if there is a troubling issue, you should ALWAYS speak to a medical practitioner regarding it and if that means making an appointment so be it. That's what they're there for.

I have a number of health issues so in answer to your comment about writing down questions...yes! By all means do it. If you have some health issues you need to discuss then get it all over with in one go. Most surgeries will allow you to book double appointments if there are a number of topics you need to discuss so if it helps to write them all down then do so and if they think you are a hypochondriac then let them think that. They still have to treat you as any other patient and if you don't go, you could end up suffering more because you didn't seek advice from a professional soon enough.

Where health is concerned, you can NEVER be too careful.

because we are not doctors and people ask for medical advice. And if we just told them what we thought it was and it was more severe. Whos to blame us or themselves for not going to the doctor.

if you have an injury then go to doctor if you have no idea what is going on. if you have a simple question call your doctor.

I have used that line a few times. Thing is that people come on here and ask for serious medical advice sometimes. They describe symptoms that people here could not possibly diagnose online(probably not even doctors if there are any on advicenators).

Its one thing if one gives a guess for most situations. Problem with random guesses when it comes to health issues is that the person could suffer from it much more seriously if they take the advice.

I spend a lot of my time on this site looking at fitness/nutrition questions. I know a bit on the subject and have some experience. I am by no means an expert mind you but, I see some of the most disastrously bad advice almost on a daily basis. Some of it is potentially harmful (I recall one person trying to convince another in all seriousness, that if he wanted to lose weight he had to eat nothing but tuna for 6 months).

My point is that if medical advice is equally crap telling someone to see a doctor might be the only reasonable advice.

If you are worried about your doctor thinking you are a hypochondriac or whatever, what about finding some columnists who know something about medicine and asking them personally? or find someone in your daily life (a nurse/ doctor/ medical student) who you can ask from time to time. It might not be foolproof, but I reckon the odds of getting decent advice would improve.

They do it because they are not doctors themselves and are not qualified to answer medical questions.

Those who have some medical background are smart enough to know only a doctor can diagnose a problem. So anything they tell you is just to get you by until you can see your doctor.

Your doctors nurse is usually more than happy to answer any questions you have. If they are minor questions...your mom can probably help you.

No offense intended to the 13 year olds, but do you honestly want to take medical advice from them? The majority of it is wrong. And some even get banned for answering. :)

well, because over the internet we cannot judge sevarity of things; most people should be able to judge it for themselves. If they cannot, then they should go to webmd.com and look around to see if they can find any information out before posting general statements on here. And most of the time, they should go ask a doctor cause we arent not doctors and some of us may not know what we are talking about.

Well the reason I personally tell someone to ask a dr is because it is a question that is either a serious mental or physical health question or a question in regards to a problem that is something that I would have to see to help with i.e. a rash. You have to remember that we are all here to help but most people have little to no medical knowledge.

As for whether or not its a serious issue its for you to decide, if its not that urgent make a note to ask your dr. when you see him, if its a semi-urgent thing you can call your dr.'s office and ask or many states and provinces have free tele-health where you can call and speak to a nurse and ask a question. I wouldn't worry about your dr. thinking your a hypochondriac if you are really worried about something, its why you pay him!

Well that is mostly said when we have people that ask questions like "I have this weird rash and it's red. What's wrong with me?" We haven't seen the rash and there are 975957 different kinds of red rashes. Also things like "One of my pupils is bigger than the other. What's wrong?" It could be a number of things so next time you see your eye doctor, ask him too look at it. It's mostly for things that need to be looked at.
