You are right. The muscle will continue to get bigger, but the fat on top is not going to go away. In order to remove that fat, you are going to have to do cardio and eat healthy. (cardio: running, walking, swimming, aerobics,) That will erase the fat.

Ab exercises are good, but the only way to get the fat out of the way so that you can actually get the flat tummy is cardio. Since your ab muscles are already getting bigger, you don't really need to work them as much as you need to flatten your stomach. Try 3 sets of 20 crunches daily with at least 20 min. cardio 5/7 days/week and you should be all set.

The other answers given are good, but there is on thing that they may not have considered. You may need to stretch your psoas muscle and your quadriceps. If you have tight psoas or quad muscles no matter how hard you workout you will always have a pooch. Your psoas will get all of the work and not your abs which will keep your psoas in a state of contraction (one of those vicious circle things. I have put some stretches here for you to do. It is always advisable to do stretches when doing a workout to keep yourself flexible. The Quad stretch in the first site will also work your psoas and the second site the psoas stretch is at the bottom of the site. Do about 3-5 stretches before and after a workout and you will feel and look much better. Make sure you add some stretches for other parts of the body as you feel you need it. Good Luck!

Its all (or largely) in the diet. To flatten your stomach you have to lose weight. Since fat loss cannot be targetted, it follows that overall weight loss is the only way.

So, eat right, eat less than you burn etc. As far as the right type of exercise, the more complete the better. Best would be a weight training and cardio combination. However, without the proper diet there will be little or no results.

doing ab exercises won't make you have a flat stomach. It will just make your stomach muscles stronger.
you need to be working out on the treadmill or other exercises at the gym to get a smaller image.
I would suggest taking aerobics at your local gym!
Now don't overdue yourself!
:D

Hope I helped.
If you need any more help.
Please let me know!
