i've been told that if you don't eat enough your body will go into starvation mode, and it will actually cause you to gain weight.
is this true? because i was thinking and then how do people with anorexia (not that i'm going to become anorexic or anything) lose weight. because if they hardly eat anything, won't their bodies go into starvation mode and cause them to gain weight?
THANKS!

This is because once they have lost the weight, they'll give up on it and they go back to eating normally, except they have slower metabolisms and everything they eat sticks to them. Then again, there are a few people who can stick with the low calorie diets. They continue to lose weight, just as everyone else did, except they never quit and give up on it. They just keep digging themselves down into a hole, getting thinner and thinner (which is what an anorexic person does) and it is SO stupid because they destroy their bodies. caramella answered Monday July 31 2006, 2:07 am: Its true...what will happen is that you dont give your body the amount of fats its used to getting,so,your bosy will let out all of the stored fats your bodys been storing and that way you will GAIN weight.Thats why they always say that if you want to lose weight DIET and EXERCISE cuz youll diet and not give your body the amount of fats its used to so itll bring out the stored fats. Then when you exercise you will BURN the stored fats till you start to FINALLY lose weight. But if you sit around doing nothing and not eat, youll probably either gain weight or stay the same. you stop eating
your body eats off your fat stores
for about a month or so
your body wont gain weight, it stays about the same
Alexandkendra answered Sunday July 30 2006, 10:22 pm: Hey, Well I know where you have heard that from.
See, people that are aneorexic eat nothing whatso ever. But people that starve themselves , will maybe go 12 hours without eating, then they will eat something. What happens is when you starve yourself for that long, your body will think its never going to get food again, and so the next time your body gets food, it will store it right to fat [aka starvation mode] as for anerexic people , they have went long periods of time without eating at all and thats when the weight comes off , but after a few weeks , your body will finally need for or you could die, so usually after that long your stomach will close up and you would need food pumped into your stomach and it will ruin your metabolism. So either way , starving yourself or becoming anerexic are bad choices!
Bellaitaliana311 answered Sunday July 30 2006, 10:19 pm: Yes it is true but, people that are anorexic dont eat at all. what makes you gain weight is when you dont eat your body starves and then when you eat something your body holds onto it because it thinks that it wont get anything else for a long time. so thats what makes you gain weight. thats why anorexic people are so skinny...they dont eat anything so theres nothing their body can hold onto. but when their body gets hungry enough it starts to eat their organs like their heart. a friend of mine was in the hospital because her body started eating her heart. not good. =/ [ Bellaitaliana311's advice column | Ask Bellaitaliana311 A Question ]
hannahd answered Sunday July 30 2006, 10:01 pm: Yeah, definitely true. & I know from experience. When you're in starvation mood, you'll gain everything you eat. Anorexia people don't normally eat [or enough], so therefore they continue to lose weight. [ hannahd's advice column | Ask hannahd A Question ]
sassysara answered Sunday July 30 2006, 9:39 pm: Hey there, Most of what others have said is true. I thought that I would add though that the reason that anorexics continue to lose weight is not only due to lack of food. It is also due to the fact that when you starve your body your body in order to "feed" will start eating its own muscle and fat tissue.
LiDdLeJeSsiCa9 answered Sunday July 30 2006, 9:32 pm: When your body goes into starvation mode, every little thing you eat will cause you to gain weight.
So, for anorexic people, they never eat so their body has nothing to feed off of and gain weight from. That's how they lose weight.
Hope I helped :] [ LiDdLeJeSsiCa9's advice column | Ask LiDdLeJeSsiCa9 A Question ]
iheartyoussx3 answered Sunday July 30 2006, 8:46 pm: hey, well when your body is n starvation mode it does slow donw your metabolsim. it usualy does cause you to gain more weight but on some people it doesnt. also most celebs you see that ae turning anorexic [ mary kate ] she was on drugs too, so being on drugs amkes you skinner too.
Alin75 answered Sunday July 30 2006, 8:34 pm: What starvation mode does is slow your metabolism. That means that is not entirely correct to say that you will gain weight. It is more correct to say that losing weight is more difficult and gaining it easier.
If the calories you intake are low enough you will lose weight starvation mode or not (i.e. people can starve). So anorexics intake so little that they lose weight anyway. However, one thing about starvation mode that is especially nasty is that your body burns what is easiet first. Muscle burns easier than fat, so that is what you lose primarily. Thats also why anorexics look like they are sick and weak. [ Alin75's advice column | Ask Alin75 A Question ]
Unfab answered Sunday July 30 2006, 8:26 pm: Well sometimes it depends. When people are anorexic they have times when they eat a whole lot so there for there body will gain weight really fast since thats all they are eating.Like say you decided to not eat breakfast or lunch but decide to eat dinner. What you eat at dinner is all your body has to feed off of.
HectorJr answered Sunday July 30 2006, 7:41 pm: To a point, it is true. This does happen, but it does not last forever.
Basically, when your body takes in its normal calories, like say 2000+ (because lets face it, teenagers do need more than 2000, despite what they may think), your body will take what it needs to replenish what you used, and to store some for later. The rest it will get rid of. Sometimes yes, it does keep a bit more than it needs to.
Now, when you dramatically cut down to about 1000 calories a day, your body is like 'hey where did all the calories go!' Your mind and body will panic, so your mind tells your body to keep all of the calories. It's not used to taking in so little, so it feels like it needs to take advantage of what it can and just take in everything instead of just what it needs.
In some cases that causes to gain weight because from that point, you might be taking in more calories than you would have if you just had 2000 and only kept some.
For people that are annorexic, I don't think this applies only because its something that their body is used to almost, get it? Somebody who is used to taking in 3 full meals a day with snacks won't do too well if they dropped down to 1 or 2 meals. Thats when your body tricks itself into taking in everything and yes, putting on weight.
This doesn't always happen. If you decrease it gradually, like a little less of a snack or a bit less of whatever, then it won't have such dramatic effects. When its sharp, like one day to the next, and continued on like that, then yeah it can happen. Hope that helped. [ HectorJr's advice column | Ask HectorJr A Question ]
