To me, Avast is undoubtedly the most effective free antivirus program of this time; I have been using avast for 3 years. You will get one year free registration by filling up the form. It is actually very essay to install and takes very short time to install. It will automatically detect virus of external devices. The most interesting features of this antivirus is its sandbox. You can open the unknown suspected file in sandbox mood, so if that is a virus that will not harm your computer. You can visit avast homepage. I found this post

I like Avast the best. It has reasonable resource usage and no annoyances.

I use AVG and it is the best to my knowledge. I have never gotten a virus and anytime I was threated by one, it popped up and told me the threat was removed. I recommend this highly.

Go to the link on the left-hand side that says "ad-Aware Personal"

This is the best program I've had on my computer. It gets rid of spyware, adware, and all the icky stuff that makes your computer SUPER slow. It can also get rid of Trojans that haven't infected your system, as I discovered the other day.

There's also Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I beleive you can download it free from the Microsoft website. You may also already have it- use your computer's search feature.

hope I helped!
