openthefridge answered Wednesday July 5 2006, 7:11 am: Limewire is illegal, and it also gives out a LOT of viruses and Trojan horses etc. I suggest using Ares, which is a really good program ive been using for several years! Its really great!
I dont think people can get into your computer, unless YOU are the one sharing stuff, so as long as you dont share your files, you should be okay!

The artists have a copyright on their material and you are breaking that copyright. This is really the same no matter what program you use.
I think some people are really confusing two things, what is actually illegal and what the authorities focus on. Those guys are more concerned with people who share the stuff than people who simply download it. So if you dont share, odds are you wont get caught. Even so, it would be completely reckless to say that it is 100% safe. Nothing illegal is 100% safe.

Limewire is probably the best free downloading program right now. You may be getting ripped if you pay the 40 bill fee, I don't know.
Your standard antivirus will protect you from downloading viruses from it. and there should be no spyware on it ethier. Just stay away from those files with those weird looking file names. [ Cj's advice column | Ask Cj A Question ]
XoNeLLiE143oX answered Tuesday July 4 2006, 9:58 pm: well its not really illegal unless you try to resell the music...and people cant really get into your computer from it. ive had it since last year and have had no problems with it. my uncle is really good with computers and all that stuff, and he downloaded it for me. he just said not to download anything other than music files because the viruses are usually in the bigger files, like movies&softwares.
im not saying its impossible to get a virus from limewire, but im saying that ive used it for almost a year now [11 months], and ive downloaded over 400 songs...never got a virus from it.
loveyou915 answered Tuesday July 4 2006, 8:26 pm: first of all.
the limewire you dont have to pay for gives you viruses and can cash your computer.
the only good limewire is where you have 2 pay 20 bucks a month or something like that. [ loveyou915's advice column | Ask loveyou915 A Question ]
x0xPREPx0x answered Tuesday July 4 2006, 8:25 pm: okay i know its only illegal if you "reshare" the music, but im not too sure how to prevent your songs from resharing. you have to right click on them and do something. but i think it takes wayyy too long to do that for every song so i just reshare them =/
and i dont think people can get into your computer because it isnt an internet type site, and they cant find your URL address. i know you can get a lot of viruses though, but thankfully i have gotten none so far.
other programs i like are iTunes(even though it costs $$), purevolume.com has some free downloads but there is only like rock/indie/acoustic/techno type stuff on there, you can try though. bearshare is okay, and myspace always has music pages.
